View Full Version : My thoughts on Carolina

There have been more discussions, opinions, etc. since Saturday than I can count. Having played some football in my lifetime, just like many of you here, and know a little bit about the trials and tribulations that go with it. I would like to share my personal opinions and thoughts on this team and what I see. These opinions are from watching this team for 7 years now since 98, not from watching the game Saturday.

1. If the team is not performing, and playing with no heart, leaving the game is fine. These guys need to understand that mediocre is no longer going to be accepted at Carolina. We fans and alumni poor millions of dollars a year into this program, and look what we have gotten in return. Now, don't flame me yet. I don't mean that like it sounds. I am as happy as anyone here that SOS came to Columbia, and he is doing, and will do a tremendous job here. I understand it takes time, but continue to read. I LOVE what SOS has done so far. Cleaning out the trash. Long time overdue, and I understand with the amount of trash we had it is going to take even more time, but not playing with heart needs to stop now!! That does not take till next week.

2. Some people I guess would refer to me as a fair weather fan. No, I want better for Carolina. I have gone through the same thing for years with Georgia Tech, although they have enjoyed more success than Carolina. Excuses for why we continue to struggle are just that. Excuses. You see what SOS thinks about excuses. I feel the same way.

3. Another thing I hear all the time. Lack of talent. BS!! That is a crock. This team has talent, they don't have heart. Do they have the talent of Bama, Tennessee, Florida? No. However, let's remember that one trademark of SOS is building super football players out of mediocre talent. You play with heart, you play as a team, you play with passion, you play fundamentally sound football, and your not going to get blown out. We have too much talent to be manhandled like we were Saturday. Missed tackles, guys acting like they didn't know where to be or where to go, etc. That is called lack of heart and not having your head where it belongs when you walk out on the field. During the second half we were not even trying to tackle. Do I like our scheme on defense? No. I cannot stand that stand up crap. Luckily, I don't think SOS does anymore either. Don't expect to see it much. But when 3 or 4 guys have a chance to make a play, that is not scheme. That is lack of heart. A week earlier we made those plays.

4. Another thing I hear. These guys need time to learn the offense. BS. How long have they been practicing now? Sure, they need reps, but if they don't know the plays by now they should find something else to do. Once again, one week ago we ran the offense almost to perfection I felt against UGA, and had chances to win the game. We just missed some opportunities. Look at the fumbles Saturday. Why all of a sudden? Lack of concentration, lack of fundamentally sound football, and lack of heart IMO. An SEC game, at home, a badly needed game, HOLD THE FREAKIN BALL!!! We are making some mistakes that can be credited to lack of game experience. Blake taking sacks when he should throw it away, or receivers dropping balls that are catchable in critical situations, etc. That will get better in time, but if you don't know the offense, you should be pouring gatorade for the ones who do. There again. An excuse.

5. These players have not realized yet what a jewel of an offense they have yet. This offense is designed to score quickly when necessary, which should keep us in most any game just as SOS has said. No reason to EVER give up.

6. Trouble on third down? Still not sure yet. We can get em to 3rd and 50, but then give up 51. Never seen anything quite like it. I would tend to lean more toward scheme there. Looks like we drop way back on the receivers on third and long. Spurrier has promised changes there.

7. Let's quit making excuses and demand better, not to Spurrier but to the players. The upper classmen are used to mediocre. That is all they know. Just like SOS said yesterday. He does not want that to trickle down on the freshmen, to think that is the Carolina way.

8. Blake Mitchell is not the problem. He has performed exceptionally well IMO until Saturday. There again, don't blame him. This entire team looked like a deer in the headlights Saturday, not just Blake. Players on the sideline Saturday shrugging their shoulders like they didn't know what was happening. That is when the fans need to help them out. Tell them in no uncertain terms, "your getting your a$$ kicked. Don't look so confused. Stand up and fight."

9. I love this team as much as anyone here, and want to see them succeed so badly, but how much longer is next year going to be acceptable. Demand better. If it takes a year or two, that is fine. But let's not let it be acceptable any longer. Steve Spurrier is not about excuses, and neither should we be IMO. They have been allowed to play with no heart for far too long. Look at other successful programs. USC, Notre Dame, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, etc. They don't allow it, never have. That comes from fans, alumni, coaches and players. To be a winner, it has to become a way of life. For those schools it has. It is a hard habit to break, but we need to do it together. :)

10. The coach for Troy said he expects to face a "wounded animal" on Saturday. That is exactly what he should be facing, and every other opponent we face this year. This is our last "cupcake" game. Let's make necessary changes, and use this game to implement them.

Very well said, GT. The only thing that I would somewhat disagree on is this concept that seems to be prevalent now that we fans need to 'refuse to accept mediocrity' and 'demand better from our team.' I suppose I've never had to pay for my student tickets so it's not as much an investment for me as it is for most fans with tickets, so in that sense I could understand why people feel they deserve more for their money. But other than that I just kind of accept whatever we get from them as a whole. I don't think that makes me a bad/apathetic fan at all. I love the Gamecocks, and I love the game of football but it's just that....a game. If they go 13-0 and win the national championship I will go crazy and never shut up about it when my Clemson friends are around, hehe, but other than that and the hole in my pocket after purchasing a ton of merchandise it won't really affect my life that much....and the same goes if we go 0-11 (please god never again, hehe).

The team frustrates me when they give up, and they make me proud when they fight to the end with a team that should have dominated them. No matter what happens though my time with the Gamecocks each Saturday is a great escape from everything else going on in life. I love everything about it, and sometimes that may include accepting the fact we're just not as good as other teams out there. I just don't feel that walking out on the team during a game or other form of mass protest/statement is going to help this team at all. I acknowledged earlier this week that I left the game...but it was honestly to get some work done since I could just watch the game on tv and it wasn't going so well. I never thought of it as some protest or signal to the team of any disgust. That being said, however, I do think there are ways that we as fans can help this team. We are some of, if not THE most loyal fans in the country, but frankly we're not that bright, and we're way too quick to give up on the team during a game. Two simple changes need to be made, and if they are I'm sure the team will find it much easier to remain fired up for the 60 minutes that clock is running (though frankly they shouldn't really need much help):

1. Yes it's great to make lots of noise when the team is on defense, but for the love of god quiet down when the team is on offense. It certainly drops a few decibel points, but the saddest part of watching the Clemson game Saturday night was hearing the announcers talking about how smart the fans are. They really were incredibly loud when Miami had the ball, and dead silent when Clemson was on offense. Why don't we do that? Is it not common sense to most football fans by now? Obviously there's still going to be plenty of noise at times, but the WR and line should ALWAYS be able to hear Blake during home games. Scream all you want until they are lined up, and then shut up.

2. We give up on this team long before they give up on themselves. If there's a 3rd and 10 in the first quarter the place will be crazy, but if they get the first down you could hear crickets and it takes awhile for any significant noise to build back up later in the quarter. That has to be far more demoralizing for the team than seeing fans walk out during a blowout....I know it would be too me. Heck, it IS more demoralizing to me just as a fan. First downs are not the end of the world. We as a whole are far too quick to jump on the bandwagon that things are completely different now and this is the year, but we're also waaaaay too quick to jump off the bandwagon and say this game is over.

Closing thoughts:
1. This was basically an excuse to get this off my chest, and not a total disagreement with GT. Like I said at the very beginning....as a whole I agree with the vast majority of what you said.

2. This is a commentary on SC fans in general at the football games....not those that are on this site. If you've interpreted any comments to be a commentary on 'you' or past posts "you've" made, be rest assured that I had not a single SECTalk member in mind as I was writing this.

3. That is all.

It's kinda like the Carolina Panthers, they are not the greatest talent wise, but the team has heart, and I mean they have a lot of heart.

It's not Blake Mitchell's fault or the RB's fault, its the damn offensive lines fault. They flippin suck.

I went to the Clemson / Miami game (OK, wife made me) and when Clemson is on offense the stadium signs say "Quiet - Offense at work" then they prompt the crowd for noise when Miami had the ball. Pretty effective too... it was very loud when Clemson needed their 12th man

A few random thoughts:

1. I was disappointed in the crowd until I saw my son's girlfriend that night. She was cooked. It was a hot day and I was on the west side. Those of you on the east were getting fried. I do not blame you for leaving. You were the sane ones.

2. Our jumbotron (compared to Georgia's - minitron) needs some work. Time for a newer model.

3. We had a bad day. We may have a bad year. Time to move on. No need to have a football team ruin my life. Hope we do better.

iI totally agree about the jumbotron. What happened to it? Its looks like it has mold all over it. Need a new one.

Carolina's problem is usually if a team gets more then a touchdown ahead they seem to just give up. This has to stop. The only time in recent memory I can remember a USC team not giving up after another team racked it on was the USC vs. Ole Miss a few years back where we were losing by like 20 something points and we had a chance to win it at the end.

Very good points, and I don't see what your saying as disagreeing with me at all. As students, you should IMO get free tickets to the games. My main point there was that in towns where championship caliber teams are expected, football becomes a way of life. Heck, even some high school towns are that way. I agree with you that some here have such high expectations and jump off the wagon at the first available opportunity. That is also wrong. We have to get through this together. We have to decide as a town and university what we expect, and work together to get there. If they are not playing with heart, booing them is not going to kill them. Sometimes letting them know you are displeased can go a long way. They are old enough to take it. Funny Spurrier even brought that up today. Excuses don't win championships. These guys have been playing football a long time. Tackling, blocking, holding on to the ball, catching, are all basics of football. It is not like this is the first year they have learned these things. Not being able to do these things is no excuse. There are several teams we play right now who are overall more experienced and more talented. How do you compete with that? As Spurrier said today. Play with heart, play with passion, play with fire, and play good fundamentally sound football. Put your best guys in the best positions and let em eat. Some feel that the close showing against UGA two weeks ago caused us to be overconfident and feeling like we are better than we are. May have. That cannot happen though. There again, championship teams don't have letdowns. They are ready every week. Their fans are ready every week. Their coaches are ready every week. If we want to be a champion, we ALL have to hang in there together, and get this thing turned around. I have never seen a team turn things around based on excuses. :)

Just read something interesting on the gamecock central forums about the same thing we are talking about here. It was about Georgia fans and how they respond to poor play. During a game in Athens against Auburn when UGA was getting their a$$ handed to em, and they were not blocking, tackling, playing, etc., some of the UGA faithful went behind the UGA bench and starting giving the players hades. Questioning their manhood, requesting they pull off the red and black uniforms due to lack of deserving the right to wear them, etc. Noone in the stands had any problem with what these fans did, and many even joined in. If it's the season I remember, they blew their next opponent out, and did not lose the rest of the season. Once again, places where champions are expected, they are expected. No excuses.

Refer back to my posts in the predictions thread. I said "our o-line sucks balls". The only thing I got wrong was that BM hasn't been lost for the season due to our o-line's inability to block for him.

I was thinking 2001, but I did not realize you guys play them so late. I thought it was around mid season. Not sure what year they were talking about. I didn't read the rest of the thread, just found that part interesting.

By the way Silver, why don't you give us some thoughts on what it's like to be in a town where championships are expected, and what advice a UGA would give for those trying to get there. :)

2001 was the year we lost on the last play of the game when we were on the goal line and ran the ball and got stuffed as time expired. So I soubt it was that game. I'm thinking that would be 1997. we played Auburn after we whipped Florida 37-17 and then Auburn showed up and wore our butts out.
