"You don't just step out there in your first start and play like you'd never missed a beat," offensive coordinator Al Borges said. "I was just hoping that the mistakes wouldn't be so catastrophic."

Of the 40 passes that weren't intercepted, Borges said that many were brilliant.

"He stood in there and threw some passes -- he put them on a dime with people in his face," Borges said.

"Maybe three or four were missed reads. Most of that was because he was zealous and wanted to take a bigger chunk than was there. When the player was open, he pretty much put the ball where it needed to be."

Of the four interceptions, at least one was excusable.

"On one interception my arm got hit, and that's tough," Cox said. "There's not much you can do about it.

"On the first interception, the ball came out of my hand wrong and I didn't get the ball where I wanted it. The other two, they were just bad reads I threw into coverage. You can't have those. You can't make those decisions. Looking back, I've got to throw those away."

Saturday against Mississippi State. Coaches have advised him to chuck the ball into the stands, even take a sack, but avoid interceptions at all cost.

just inexperience talking, he was trying to force things in the second half since auburn was down.
