New Orleans' music legend Fats Domino was rescued by boat from his home in New Orleans after riding out the hurricane, and ended up at the PMAC center at LSU. After getting a medical checkup, the 70+ year old entertainer and some of his family stayed with LSU QB JaMarcus Russell in Russell's near-campus apartment until leaving on Friday. Russell's girlfriend is a relative of Domino.

I gotta ask though.... what the heck was Domino doing in his house still? It's not like he doesn't have money/transportation to get out.

Maybe he doesn't. When Fats Domino was popular, musicians didn't make half as much money as they do now. Also he may not have saved his money very well.

Last I heard, Domino was still making decent money off of archived recordings. Not a lot by today's standards, but easily enough to get by.
If this is incorrect, or has changed in the past couple years, then I retract my previous statement.

He is financially very well off. His manager begged him to evacuate before the storm, but he refused. He's ridden out many hurricanes during his day, and I guess he figured they were crying wolf again or that it wasn't as bad as they said. It almost cost him his life.
Fats Domino still lives in the 9th Ward where he was raised and that was one of the areas hit hardest by the flooding.

Wow, so sad. As bad as this was, hopefully after hearing so many of these stories, that people will think better about evacuating from any city hit by future hurricanes.

I just told my wife tonight that we're going to buy a generator to have just in case, and the next hurricane that even sniffs this way, we'll head up to Shreveport early and wait until it has passed through. If we come home and there is no electricity, we'll crank up that generator!

Just make sure to put the actual unit outside and well away from doors/windows. You'd think it'd be common sense, but sadly enough there are people who die from the carbon monoxide during every storm from cranking up a generator inside (or right at the door) of their house.

If you can afford it get one like my AmEx Investing guy has. It automatically kicks on when the power fails replacing house power for major circuits. It is installed so that it won't back feed into the power grid and endanger and power co employees.
