The Bulldogs open the season with a 38-6 win over Murray St. Most thought they would win but not many thought it would be by better than 4 TDs. I heard a couple of guys in the Tupelo media on the radio predict the Dogs to win by 10 points.
This game was probably the weakest team on the schedule for MSU and things are sure to get tougher , but at least in this game MSU showed they are moving forward. Last years team could not have won this game by 32 points and even could have lost it ( see Maine ).
Junior QB Omarr Conner had his best showing of his career , 17-24 with 4 TDs and no INTs. Yes it was Murray St. , but last years schedule also had a Div 1-AA team on it and Conner only threw for 6 TDs all season. He has definately made some improvement over last year.
Norwood had 100+ yards and didn't play the last quarter and a half , a smart move by Croom to keep him healthy with the game well in hand.
Freshman receiver Keon Humphries hauled in 5 catches for 98 yards and 2 TDs in his first ever college game after playing in only 6 high school games due to focusing on basketball.
The defense started slow and gave up an early TD to Murray St. , but pulled together and shut them out the rest of the way. At one point in the fourth quarter MSU had 11 players on the field who had never played in an NCAA game before.
Overall grade : I give the Bulldogs a B+. They did what they had to do and played a lot of new people. It was nice to see some bench players on the field because the game was already decided before the fourth quarter. Things will get tougher though and quickly. Auburn is next for the Bullies and they will surely try to put up an ugly number on the Bulldogs after losing their opener to GT. The effort vs. Murray St. was a step in the right direction , but MSU must play even better to be able to stay in the game with Auburn.
Good start by MSU , but a lot of work left to do.
