I would be pisssed too if I was him. Bush can leave vacation right away to pass legislation to intefere with a personal family matter to keep a brain dead woman alive, but he sits around for days while thousands are dying and acts like there is no big hurry. What is wrong with that picture.
I wish I could convey to you guys how angry I am, no example or metaphor is gonna work though, and as mad as I am, this guy has got to be 100x worse, and I've never been as angry in my 22 year lifetime as I have been in the past 60 hours, so I can't imagine what he's thinking...., I just hope Bush enjoys his seat in hell next to Hitler, Stalin, and Nixon, he'll have a blast....

My problem with the whole situation is how we can easily manage to air-drop food, water & medical supplies to former Russian republics when Communism collapsed more than a decade ago but apparently that's not an option for the people in New Orleans and coastal Mississippi who are starving and dying of dehydration AS I TYPE THIS.
I cannot believe so little has been done to ensure the people still stuck in that Hell-on-Earth get what they need to survive at least until they can restore order and get them out of there. It boggles the mind at how many common sense actions that have (as yet) gone undone.
I fully understand how much effort and hard work the volunteers, National Guard and others have and continue to put into helping those that need it but the total lack of leadership shown from the top down is setting a new and very dubious standard of how NOT to react to a tragedy of these proportions.
I hope a Bush isn't in office when the Big One finally hits California...

Mr. Mayor, where the hell were you when the National Hurricane Center upgraded Katrina to a Cat5? Why in the hell didn't YOU order a TOTAL evac of your City Saturday, for you damn well knew your City's protective levees were only designed for up to a Cat3 storm? Over 1000 school buses PLUS the NO Transit Buses could have moved thousands to safety, yet all those buses now lie underwater.
And Madam Governor, why did you not act sooner in ordering the National Guard in to assist in the evac effort? While you haven't sniped at the Fed as bad as that jerk Mayor, why didn't the State act proactively in the best interests of its citizens?
Both are playing the rear view mirror game but the Mayor particularly more so. His reluctance to make the unprecendented call of evacuating the whole City has cost maybe thousands their lives, all in some hope that the storm would turn away. Had he acted and the storm did turn away, would he not be in a better situation having folks bitching about overreacting instead of the cold silence of rotting bodies in his streets?
The reality is that large portions of New Orleans should be returned to the swamp land it was before Cotton became king and the oil industry sparked expansive growth leading to man's attempt to outwit Nature. We know who won that one now.
I swear.....
I'm just waiting on people to accuse Bush of killing John F. Kennedy. This is total BS at it's purest form.
Now as some of you know, I'm not a blind Bush supporter, but I know crap when I see it or smell it.
Instead of showing some backbone and leadership, the governor of LA and the mayor of NO are too busy bashing Bush and trying to play a political blame game to shine in the media. This chap aint buying it.
I've been through some of the worst hurricanes on record. (Hugo, Andrew) When there's a state-wide mandated evac, that means EVERYONE!!!! Not just a few..... Let me preempt the people that are going to use the excuse that "Some of these people couldn't leave." because that's total horses***! A lot of these people had over a week to evacuate and did they? NOPE and that's part of the problem. If most of these people would have left like they were ORDERED to by the governor of LA, they wouldn't be in this situation.
This is not a blame or bitch session on my part, I just get tired of people wanting to blame Bush for someone else's stupidity. At the rate we're going, Bush is going to get blamed for the hurricane itself.
BTW: It's rather hard to fly in supplies when you have nutjobs firing at ambulances and rescue helicopters isn't it?

You people know nothing of the situation in New Orleans other than what is reported to you on the news. I am sure that none of you are poor enough to have to contend with the decision to leave everything you have in life behind for a future that holds nothing for you. It is easy to sit in Georgia or South Carolina or wherever and say this kind of shit but until you know what it truley feels like to have lost everything I think you need to keep these kind of uninformed a$$hole remarks to yourself.

I don't even TRY to begin to know what situation is in New Orleans, Miss. coast and Alabama's coast :( I could't even begin to imagine being in the position to have to make the difficult decision of leaving behind everything that I had in life, having almost no money in the bank and then having no job to pay the bills I owe(and I don't even have other mouths to feed other than myself and my husband) My heart goes out to all of the people in that region as well as 'refugees' who were able to get out and go 'somewhere' before the storm hit.

BEEN THERE & DONE THAT. I know the City, the surrounding area, and the State of Louisiana very, VERY well fyi. Why do so many posters here exhibit this maddening propensity for leaping to the most stupid conclusions? BB, you couldn't be more wrong about what I'm thinking or what I'm about.
My post and remarks followed the SUBJECT of this thread, nothing more, and by all means feel perfectly free to disagree with my opinion since that is what this board is for. The Mayor is facing a situation that no person on this Earth could have been prepared for, BUT he DOES bare a responsibility for not marshalling all of the help he had at his disposal PRIOR to the impact of the storm.
The empathy for the victims, the innocent souls who have absorbed something no one other than those soon to be corpses in Al Queda would celebrate, have been in my thoughts and prayers as several dozen close acquaintences and their families are among those who survived but with the clothes on their backs. They will struggle as will countless tens of thousands more to start over. It sucks, no other way to say it, for having had to do it twice myself, a part of you dies along with losing everything you own and all of the things you took for granted in that former lifestyle.

You do realize that there are 1 million people in New Orleans. Who are we blaming anyway? It's nobodies fault that the hurricane flooded New Orleans but alot of these people could have avoided this situation by leaving. The town was under a mandatory evacuation and these people made the decision to stay.

Thank you, Bayou. I've been thinking throughout this entire week that it's these people themselves who made the decision to stay. The mandatory evacuation was put into effect well in advance, and anyone without means of transportation could have gone to the city to find out what they needed to do to evacuate. They obviously chose to ignore the evacuation, and in return are having to live through this tragic aftermath right now. It's not necessarily their fault, as many of these people probably didn't understand the severity of everything.... especially those who had stayed through previous hurricanes. But all in all, it was their choice to stay. To make that decision and then turn around and get upset that you're not receiving more help in a faster amount of time is ridiculous to me. While it surely is tragic and sad that people have died this week, there's no reason to blame it on one person or another. It was just a long series of unfortunate events/decisions, that when added together made this entire scenario the horrible situation it has turned out to be.

Yea, 'dearie' was far too kind, DOLT more appropriate. In typical liberal bleeding heart fashion you've MANUFACTURED the very premise you're trying to bludgeon me with. Might fly in your knitting class but not here. And seeing as how you have no idea what the word 'hypocrite' means, look up the word 'dullard', for it also precisely fits you.
Also, there is nothing about you that makes me intimidated.
And from the mouthes of babes comes the unfettered truth. No, one must first possess the intelligence with which to comprehend when it is necessary to be intimidated, for while humankind has inherited the sense of danger to themselves from things like snakes, spiders, and predator animals as it was key to its ascention to the top of the food chain, along the way there were casualties for survival of the fittest necessitates the demise of the dumb. A pool so shallow that a single ray of sunlight evaporates it, that sums you up perfectly.

I don't think that the fact that some people chose to stay for whatever reason in any way lessens the responsibilty of the government to react in an efficient and helpful manner. IF help should have come quicker, then these people have just as much right as anyone else to complain. Many on here have stated that our focus should not yet be on whether the Bush administration handled this disaster well. If that be the case, then surely we can extend the victims the same courtesy. They deserve our love and sympathy, not our second-guessing.

Chew on this post from one of my voice chat buds, I'm certain you'll be similarly mortified by his truthful observations:
Subject: Regarding what is going on in NO...just my opinion...
"Most of the folks you see on the News videos who are calling for Help the loudest are really not in much different shape than they were two weeks ago before they even knew about the storm. Only difference now is they cant have the things they want/need because its not available anywhere, to anybody.
Many of them have been sitting in NO for generations with their hand out.
Let's face it folks, in this day and age, with our weather technology, Hurricane's dont sneak up on anybody. They knew it was coming and chose to stay. Kind of like sitting on the RR tracks, then blaming the train for hitting you.
Not everyone chose to stay....but most of the ones who had no real choice arent the ones who you see on the News looting electronics and shooting at helicopters.
The people of NO have been dodging this bullet for years and many of them were betting on dodging it again. This time, they bet wrong. Now they are in bad shape and need to blame somebody for thier situation.
Hell, you could have started walking out of NO 3 days before the storm got there and escaped if you really had no money for bus fare.
I dont apply this to everyone down there. Lord knows some people had relatives in the Hospital or in situations where they couldnt evacuate on thier own.
Also, people die every day, in every country, in every city and in every village around the world. Many have died in Birmingham since Katrina, but many of the folks who have died in NO since Katrina, due to natural causes or prediagnosed disease, will be blamed on Katrina and the lack of help from the authorities.
It's a terrible situation and some of it is hard to watch. However, it really strikes me as Natural Selection at work on a grand scale. At some point you have to be responsible for yourself and your actions. I have more compassion for the folks who evacuated and now have no home to return to, than the people who are hollering at TV news cameras, "Why aint Bush helping us?" while they hold brick in thier hand ready to break a store window out to get that TV they want but have no electricity for.
Finally, I feel sorry for the babies and kids who are now paying the price for thier parent's decision not to leave. In no way did they ask for this and had no control over it.
Sorry this is so long."

They knew what was coming, they stayed anyway, now they have to live with their choice. Also if your mayor acts like a thug, now we know why there is so much needless looting and shooting going on down there. Attitude reflects leadership!

It never ceases to amaze me how unsympathetic some people can be. A lot of people just look at it like " Well, your dumb@$$ should've left." Its not the time for that kind of thinking. We've all made bad decisions, some worse than others. Just use this as an example on a smaller scale:
Say you have a car, and you need to change your tires because they are getting old. You keep holding off and hoping they can last a little longer. One day you're drving down the road, the front tire blows, and you swerve off the road and slam into a tree. Would you rather have people driving by and going "Well, your dumb@$$ should've changed your tires.", or would you rather have someone stop and call for an ambulance?
The times when this country prevails most in times of emergency is when people come together to help each other. That is what needs to be done here. We dont need to just write this off as people who are paying for their actions. We need to come together to get through this and start the rebuilding process.
It won't let me add rep points cocky, but great perspective....

Kurtz,
The thing is...I think we are arguing about two different things. I agree the people should have left earlier. I think our government is doing what is right to try to help them. The part I didn't agree with you on was when you said that New Orleans should be returned to swampland. I didn't say I didn't agree with your whole post. That is why I only quoted your last paragraph.
As for me, I teach 2nd graders. Therefore, I teach Reading, Math, Phonics, Language Arts, Character Education, Writing, etc.
I teach my children daily that they should get along with each other. I also teach them that they should work things out. I haven't been showing that with you. I am not a stupid person by any means. My mind is also not made of mush as you stated earlier, but arguing with you over message boards when so many others in our country are suffering is stupid. I am stepping down from this argument. Teaching is a profession that I deeply respect, but just like anything else, being one doesn't give you a free pass in any free exchange of ideas. Now complete your obligation to me and we'll move along.
I invite you and everyone else to participate in the relief efforts as best as you can see fit to, I'll be leaving for N.O. Monday and lend my efforts and expertice to getting the logisitcal nightmares remedied. At the very least, by Wednesday, 100 mobile electrical generators will arrive off a chartered freighter docking in Houston Monday which will provide enough power for the hospitals and other vitally needed facilities which will bring some slow, but steady relief to some of the suffering.

What? Do you think that New Orleans is the only place that's ever been hit by a hurricane? Get off your soapbox. If you would have read some of the earlier posts, you would know what we've been through. So don't give me this "Woe is me" crap, I've been there.

Give me a break. It was not intended to be a woe is me post. It was an angry response to a stupid comment.

Kurtz,
Go to a mirror and pick a fight with yourself. That should keep you busy for a while. I am being the bigger person here and I refuse to argue with you further. I stated my point and backed it up, but I refuse to argue with someone who is so stubborn and hard-headed when the only thing it will do is piss me off and piss you off further. Think what you want to think about me surrendering. I keep telling you and quoting you on what I thought was wrong, and you refuse to listen to me. I didn't say being a teacher gave me any free pass to do anything. I also have no obligation to you. Now move on to the next person you can find to argue with. I am through.
I do, however, applaud you for helping out the victims in New Orleans. My family gave some money this morning and we are raising money at our school. We also are going to the local shelters to find out what is mainly needed for the evacuees who are in our county. I am planning on buying toys, snacks, toiletries, etc. for the people who have nothing. I had saved money for a dishwasher and some home repairs and instead I am using that money to help other people. Unlike your view of me, I am a very nice person actually.

You were "through" when you lied and fabricated your specious diatribes. You are nothing more than a sanctimonious and self-deluded twit. No credibility do you have and none can you create, enjoy your mediocrity.
