I've been here, Colonel, posting off and on during the game. Where've you been all night? Someone by the name of Colonel "something or other" also said something along the line of we'd be lucky to escape with a win. Wasn't much of a doubt, although I'll admit it was sloppy (especially the second half). And one bit of advice.....You may want to worry about your ball game Saturday before you start acting like an a$$. Oh, I guess I'm a little too late for that advice. :p

Wow, you have to gain your joy over the Gamecocks making it a little to close with UCF? You need to get out a little more. I'd be more concerned with winning the game with Boise State this weekend. How funny would it be for S.Carolina to be 1-0 and UGA 0-1 when they meet next week? Hilarious is the answer.

Oh yeah, this should be in the trash talk area. I know some people have a problem with how to use this site. ;)

Yep, don't worry about the Colonel, congrats on the win guys!

It was a little too close for my taste, but it was the learning experience that was needed by both the players and coaches on what they need to work on to prepare for the rest of the season.

I guess Colonel's just "allowed" to heckle you about it right now because they're your next opponent. :p

Yep. 4 formations tonight. Blake looked GREAT in the offense. Running trouble? YES!! But, Spurrier expected passing problems. I have the game on DVR, and was concerned. Went back and looked. George O'Leary is a defensive coach, and was very successful at GT. The running game was not there tonight. But!!! Mitchell showed why he is the starter at Carolina, like Spurrier said he would. Some OL out on suspension this game. Was SOS happy? NO!!! Is he PO'd? NO!! Like I said. He runs at least 7 formations, with multiple plays from each. Like my dad told me earlier before the game, and I disagreed. He said SOS is going to show the least he can, but will say he showed it all. That is why he is the Master. He will be ready next week. He would love to beat his most hated rival UGA more than anything, and now he has 10 days to prepare, and he is 1-0 is his first game. That is all that matters.

Haven't seen the ....not thing in a while, probably sometime around 1992. Anywho I have to say that I really liked the play of our defense, we bent but when it got down to the redzone were flawless for the most part. Of course the Bullsharts are going to find all this out a week after they get whooped by Boise State.

I was very impressed with Mitchell in the first quarter. After that, well, I think it had to do more with your offensive line than anything.

They looked good in the first quarter but after UCF made an adjustment, the pass protection just wasn't there. Mitchell had all day on those first two drives.

That's the area I would worry about most if I were a USC fan. If an 0-11 UCF team was able to penatrate that well against my offensive line, I'd definitely have some concern.

I'm not flaming, because Bama could be in virtually the same boat. We'll find out Saturday night.

RTR!

I still think USC finishes about 6-5 because I'm sure the ole ball coach will get those problems fixed. However, if they don't get fixed you guys could end up 4-7 or worse.

Man our passing game is good, but our running game got like 50 yards against the freaking UCF defense. Think about when we play Georgia. They have the best defensive line in the country atleast one of the best. It is going to hurt losing some of those RB's but we get Turman back next weak. And our Special Teams they are NOT special WHAT SO EVER. They fumbled like twice and just gave the ball to UCF one. Like what the heck!

cocky4ever
09-02-2005, 08:11 AM
It certainly looked like we had freshmen running backs in there. I think it will help a little bit to get Turman back next week. We have to have a running game or else people will just sit back and wait on the pass. On special teams there were a lot of mistakes made, but all of that can be corrected. At least now that we've gone up against another team we can get a better idea of which areas need to be worked on the most. It was basically the opposite of what I expected. I was thinking our defense would go in there and bail out our offense until we could get it together. Instead, our offense had to bail out our defense. If we cant run against UCF then I dont think we'll have much luck running against UGA, and if we cant stop UCF from running then we wont be able to stop UGA from running. Of course, after reviewing the film I think a lot of things will be worked on so we should look better next week even if we dont come away with a win.

ColonelKurtz, I haven't been coming here for long now, so I'm sure this was more of a personal, fan related thing than anything else, but I hope you show a little more class throughout the season... first because it's just the thing to do, but mainly because when you talk junk about them, they will in turn talk more junk about us and I don't want to get sucked into it as usual, like I do on every other board! I would have at least waited until we played our game just in case, you never know...

SC looked good to start with, the passing game and all... but the running game was awful, and the D, even that supposed top 5 secondary, looked suspect as well. I think most SC fans know they have a long way to go, even Savior Spurrier says so on a continual basis... but they won, that's the bottom line. The SEC is 2-0, way to go guys.

The cocks offense really didn't do bad last night, in the first half Blake threw for 290 yds and 2-3 TDs. The running game wasn't firing on all cylinders but the offense when on the field made the most of their trips out their. The reason I feel the score was lower than most thought it would be wasn't becasue of Spur man's "O" it was becasue of the "mighty" defense we were all told about didn't really show up, and the specail teams drug us threw the mud. Plus there were two droped TD passes during the game as well. Given those two catches and, the possesion of the ball when ST gave it away the score could have easily been much more lop sided; but thats why the games played because your not guaranteed those plays. I think that if Thomson can get the defense back on track and they get the kinks out of the ST we will be in great shape for the season. I was really excited about the majority of the game that I saw. GO COCKS!!

BIG DEAL

For one thing, it was easy to surmise (if you're not a total dummy, that is) that O'Leary's team is vastly improved, especially offensively.

That being a given, the Gamecocks traditionally have trouble with teams they are vastly superior to, especially early in the season. Even during our 10-2 season in 1984, we barely beat the Citadel in the first game of the season. Last season, we struggled with Troy. So I wouldn't put too much credence in your hopes of destroying us next week.

No team can afford two consecutive turnovers deep in their own territory, a muffed punt and fumbled kickoff. Concurrently, it could have been a more lopsided affair had a wide open receiver not been overthrown (easy six) and had there not been a dropped pass at their four yard line. The score could easily have been 38-3 (or more).

Such are the vicissitudes of fortune. And you know that.

As to the running game, this is very nearly the same offensive line as last season, which ran the ball effectively, for the most part, and with the suspended Freddy Saint-Preux (6-5, 315) returning at guard and bruising fullback Daccus Turman (5-11, 235) back in the backfield, you guys better watch out.

My prediction:

WE WILL BURY YOU!!! :D :p

I thought USC's passing game looked good at the beginning of the game. It looked like your players came out sky high with emotion and once the success came easily to them early. The intensity died and somewhat went away.

As a USC fan it would worry me that my defense didn't look in either facet of the game last night. (running nor passing) Although both issues can be addressed and corrected. I also happen to think both cannot, nor will not, be corrected enough to help in your tough early games.

USF is improved from last year but not to the level I watched them have success last night.

Your offense looks to be good enough to out score some teams but not enough to challenge for more then anything above 4th in the SEC east.....

That sounds like an honest opinion. The def. coord. said after the game they were having some communications issues from the sideline. He wasn't making excuses, but was simply saying sometimes they were not in the formation they wanted. Spurrier has already addressed the offensive line, running game issue. Once he got a lead last night, he seemed to focus more on watching each player closely to find the weak links. I am sure he will have them fixed by next week. Very proud of Blake Mitchell. For me and others who kept saying he couldn't do it, he did it for 330 yds. I hope now that the team has a game under their belts they will be fine. I knew, as did Spurrier, that UCF would not be a pushover. He is a damn good defensive coach, and made great adjustments after Carolina's 2 quick scores. Some look only at the fact that they do not play in the SEC and have lost 15 in a row. O'Leary said all week they were a much better team, and I wish him the best the rest of the year. He has a pretty dog gone good little team there.

The funny thing is UGA didn't even look that good, not as a team. The secondary looked good, and Shockley and Coutu looked good, but IMO that's about it. The receivers were about what I expected, some dropped balls, some big plays. The line and RB's were very disappointing to me. All in all, I am just extremely stoked that we could play that average, and still crush a ranked team with one of the highest winning percentages over the last few years, albeit in a weak conf... we still dominated a team that was arguably a lot better than any the other SEC teams faced... save for maybe Tech, I expect they'll be ranked soon.

I was a bit disappointed in our running game also. I don't know if Richt realized we didn't have to run to win so he didn't show all of our running plays or something like that. However, Thomas Brown did have 40 yards on 8 carries which is a pretty good average.

I also was sort of disappointed in our run defense. It seems that these little, quick scat backs give us some problems. I'm sure it will work itself out though.

Same here silver,I was a little upset about the running game and the running defense.Pope also dropped a couple of passes, but it was almost a pefectly played game. ;)

Martrez (spelling) Milner was much more impressive to me than Pope was by a long shot. Milner looked like the better TE on saturday IMO.
