For those of you heading out-of-town to attend your favorite teams' game this weekend, I hope you all consider one thing. There are likely going to be a lot of hurricane Katrina evacuees still at many of the hotels/motels this weekend. Because football-weekend hotel reservations usually are booked months in advance, a lot of these people are going to be forced to leave their hotel rooms this weekend.

Many hotels around Tuscaloosa have asked if you do not HAVE to stay in a hotel this weekend, to please cancel your reservation so that the evacuees can stay put where they are. I'm sure the same holds true for many hotels around the South, as there are even people staying up here in Arkansas who left town when the storm was coming. So keep these people in mind this weekend if you have a hotel reservation, and at least consider cancelling it. If you've got friends in the town you're going to, I'm sure most of them would be willing to put you up at their place for the night given these circumstances.

Hope everyone has a great weekend, and best of luck to everyone who has had family hit by this storm.

University of Alabama head football coach Mike Shula said Thursday that the Crimson Tide football team would be giving up a number of its rooms at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel on Friday night in order to assure that the team will not displace any hotel guests who have been evacuated from the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

“We’re going to eliminate as many rooms from our team party as we can,” Shula said. “Some of our players will be staying at their apartments or dorm rooms on Friday night.

“The best news is that the hotel has assured us that everyone there now who needs a place to stay on Friday will have a place to stay.”

The Crimson Tide team traditionally stays together in a team hotel prior to home games. UA will play Middle Tennessee State on Saturday night at 6 p.m.

Earlier on Wednesday, UA athletics director Mal Moore had encouraged Crimson Tide fans to consider giving up their weekend hotel reservations in Tuscaloosa in order to avoid displacement of evacuees.

Shula also said the American Red Cross would have collection points at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, and he encouraged Tide fans to contribute to disaster relief.

“That’s a great way for our fans to help,” Shula said.

The Tide’s second game, on September 10, will be against the University of Southern Mississippi, which was forced to cancel its season opener with Tulane. Shula said the Tide would “work in any way possible” with USM officials to help the Golden Eagles in their trip to Tuscaloosa.
