Rick Clausen was much sharper than Eric Ainge in Saturday's scrimmage and may have pulled ahead in the battle to be UT's starting quarterback. Clausen has a great understanding of the offense and is taking what the defense gives him. Both Fulmer and Sanders still say that it is even and will wait to publically name a starter.
There is also a battle at running back to backup Gerald Riggs. Everyone is raving about true freshman Montario Hardesty, but he sat out the scrimmage with a thigh bruise. Heralded fellow freshman LaMarcus Coker looked good, but put the ball on the ground twice. Like the quarterback position, this too could take awhile longer to sort out.
The defensive line and linebackers were solid, but the defensive backs continue to struggle to keep up with the receivers. Look for a big season out of wideout Robert Meacham. He is an absolute stud. True freshman Lucas Taylor is garnering a lot of attention and may crack a deep rotation. Taylor was a 4 star recruit out of Lafayette, Louisiana who played quarterback. He reportedly rushed for 538 yards in a single game. Judging from the televised practice on ESPN and comments from coaches and players, Taylor's ability to change direction is amazing. Hopefully, this says more about his phenomenal talent than it does about our secondary.

Sounds like everything is moving along nicely...
except for that secondary.
That may be good news for us, provided we have the QB who can deliver the ball quickly for 40-50 yards to WRs who are galloping behind the defenders.
Hmmm. Sounds pretty good to me! I think our WRs will be behind your secondary all day and I think both JaMarcus and Perrilloux have the cannons that can get the ball down to them. Your big ole Mehelona (sp?) will be tied up with our big ole (6'7", 325) All-American Andrew Whitworth, so I think we'll have time to throw. Should be the premier game of the SEC this season!

The reason the secondary is struggling is they are dealing with some of the biggest fastest recievers in the country. Its difficult the defend a player that is 6-3 and 6-4 when your only 5-11 or 6-0 its basic physics. I toatlly agree with you on the premier game of the SEC (and nation) this season hopefully we will get to see the game played twice.

Do you think that ut has the only 6'1 plus receivers in the conference? RTR

no but if you look at all the teams depth charts in the SEC, Tennessee has by far the largest reciveing core, dont take this the wrong way Im not like Geaux this was not meant to be a UT gloat session, just mearly defending my team, and stateing the facts. Also Im not saying they r better than the rest, but just as good with size to there advantage. Im also just sick of hearing him say the lsu recievers r the best in the country and will be behind UT dbs all night.
