Matt had 45 yards and a touchdown tonight in his first NFL game. The sun just shines on that boy. I bet he's the only player in football history to throw a touchdown on his first NCAA attempt and catch a TD in his first NFL game. Maybe not though. Regardless, pretty good start.

That's a GREAT start. He's a great athlete and it is good to see that he will be given his chance with the big boys. I think he'll do well.

Since there aren't that many college QB's that turn into NFL wide receivers...
The only other player in NCAA history to throw a TD on their first ever pass attempt is Matt Leinart (he ain't catchin any passes anytime soon).
Jones had a breakaway slam dunk in his first ever shot attempt in college basketball.
And now a TD in his first NFL game.....the people who were hatin on the Jags for taking him so early and the S.Car. fans who were dogging his abilities and saying how Troy Williamson was soooo much better (you know who you are) are gradually becoming a little quieter.

Uh, you just started something. Ain't been on here in months, and you come back and talk smack. Troy will be a fine NFL WR. Will he be better than Matt? I dunno. With Jones, the sky is the limit, ya know. Vic Ketchman, the jags' website writer whose office is in the stadium, said Jones is the tallest receiver in the NFL. He's fast, strong and has big hands. His potential is limitless. However, his route running compared to TW is miserable. But you can work on your routes. You can't work on your height or natural speed and instinct. I think both will be very, very good WRs in the NFL for a long while, but I do think Jones could develope (if he does so to his potential) into one the NFL's best. Regardless, I'm happy he got off to a good start. I wish both he and Troy the best in 2005.

It would not surprise me to see both of them in the Pro Bowl in a few years. Jones has a little more work to do, but with his ball skills and work ethic, he will quickly overcome his lack of experience. Williamson is just lightning quick in and out of breaks and he has the quarterback and the system to get him the ball.

This is why your my boy Lupo. I don't know who he's referring to, but I wish nothing but the best for MJ. Once they leave the SEC, they are all my boys. My favorite NFL players are from the SEC. And Buzbee, don't bet against Troy. The man's got talent.

Jones only has one real flaw and that's just his seemingly apathetic approach to the game which was commented on repeatedly during the draft day and since then. If he can find a true love for the game, he has tons of talent to be able to make him a dangerous receiver.

According to Lupo, whose opinion I trust, Jones' supposed apathetic approach is completely false. People often mistake his calm demeanor for a lack of passion for the game. Even his seemingly effortless, gliding running style contributes to this perception. He does have work to do learning the nuances of the position, but I imagine that he is very motivated to succeed and will develop into an excellent receiver.

Just cause Jones isn't out there pumping his fist and celebrating after every TD doesn't mean he's apathetic.....Lupo and I have often sat in his apartment and discussed Jones' supposed apathetic approach....I believe its just that Jones is so confident in his ability that he doesn't ever think he won't come out on top.
As for the other comments.....don't get me wrong...I DO NOT think that Troy is gonna be a bad NFL receiver, BUT prior to the draft and the day after the draft certain USC supporters were touting Troy while in the same breath stating that Jones would be the bust of the draft (which since the season hasn't started yet, they both could end up busts). I'd rather not name names and you can just look back into either the USC thread or the Ark. thread but...it's a fact. I'll refer you to South Carolina Sports Thread: "Troy Williamson at Mini Camp (#2)" and "Troy Williamson's NFL Video" (#8, et al.)
I also think with the injuries that Troy has had and his late signing and a recent Sporting News column that discusses Jones' ability to catch anything thrown to him and Troy's difficulty with dropped balls tips the scale right now in Jones favor.....again, I'm not saying Troy's gonna have a bad career I just was commenting on the fact that Jones is proving people wrong and that a lot of the previously flapping gums have become a little quieter.

Also: Lupo.....why did you miss the bachelor party last night? I'm very disappointed and you missed out BAD (and I mean really BADBADBADBAD!!!). Are you gonna be able to get off work to come to the fantasy draft? (I'd send this in a pm but you'd never check it.).

You should quit listening to all those commentators who've never seen him play. The boy is ICE COLD, not apathetic. But it's easy to see why people percieve him that way. He's just a laid back guy to begin with. He's 100 percent confident in himself and he's been this way since he was a kid in junior high. I'm not knocking ya though Cianne. It's easy to see how some could think that and when it's talked about over and over again, it's even easier to believe it. But that has never been and never will be true.
Honestly, you can tell already how hard Matt's worked with all the strides he's made so far. And listening to his comments after practices, etc... only leads me to believe that he's working much harder than he did in college and is genuinely trying to be the best he can be.

F**K, S**t, C*c*suc**r, motherf**k*r!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I new it was gonna be good, but I missed out bad????? Damnnit. I suppose the "BAD" part (in all caps implying it was really, really good), had something to do with female entertainment???? F**K, S**t, C*c*suc**r, motherf**k*r!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to friggin work. I was on design last night, my boss in on vacation, and our other two guys were covering that American Legion Regional in PB. I hate I had to miss it. I need to call turchi today. Holler @ me Buz. I need to come up to the Rock and we ain't got nothing going on this week, so I may actually do it. HOller! Oh, and I seriously doubt I'll make the fantasy draft. That's the opening weekend of HS football I'm pretty sure, and we've got a ton of teams that are bad ass down here this year (Pine Bluff, Stuttgart, Warren, Monticello, Rison, etc....) I doubt it man. I may have to do auto draft!!!! If I do work, I'm gonna try to pull design so I can draft. There may be a few mistakes in the paper the next day, but I can draft :)

There's a reason I put seemingly in there. His laid back style while he runs can easily be taken as apathetic. It will be interesting, however, to see how his laid back style of running takes to the NFL where more precise routes are needed as well as toughness. While I'm not doubting his toughness, it's hard to be laid back and absorb hits from the much bigger safeties around the NFL such as Ed Reed who is going to be laying into him twice a season.
I'm glad that he's putting in a lot more work now because he's a world of talent.

Oh, and for the record, there's not a doubt in my mind that Troy Williamson will be a Pro Bowler. Like Beeds, once they're gone from college, they're just SEC guys and are ones that I cheer for and follow in the NFL.

That's true man!! But Matt, if he's anything, is a physical speciman. He's a big, giant guy. Ed Reed may even think twice about trying to bowl over a 6'6+ 240 giant. Personally, if MJ is aware of where he is (which he won't be all the time) then I'd love to see Reed, Hamlin, hell I'd love to see Steve Atwater :) come up and try and lay him out. But that laid back running style is what makes him so, so difficult to tackle, not to mention the fact that he's a giant. People take bad, horrible angles on him b/c it doesn't look like he's moving at 4.3, but he is. In regards to tackling MJ, it's all about your approach. You've got to take the right angle, or you don't have a prayer. And those 5'10-6'0 CBs are really going to struggle bringing Jones down if and when he gets the ball. But you're right Cianne, physically, he'll have to be bigger and stronger to take the pounding that the NFL will put on his body.

Looks like Mr. Williamson had a successful debut (I think it was their first game) as well with the Vikings. I think he had 62 yards and a 13-yard touchdown reception. It's great to see Matt and Troy get off to such good starts. Hope I see many more Jones and Williamson TDs in the very near future.

According to several reports, Jones is now practicing with the first team offense as the third receiver and will play that role in the preseason game Thursday. Great news for SEC fans in general and Hogs in particular.

Not necessarily "converted".... he split between QB and WR in high school as well. So he's just kind of "going back to his roots" in a sense. :)

Man that catch was awesome! They showed it like 5 times on sportscenter and even had a 3-5 minute segment about him. Sean Salisbury said he could end up being the steal of the draft. That really was a phenomenal catch even if they did get their azz kicked.

Man, I saw that highlight. Oh I wanted him to get to it. That would've been a tough catch, about as tough as the one he made earlier. But yeah, I would've liked to see him bring that one in cuz then he'd have had 3 catches for like 90 yards and a TD. But Oh well, it's only taken three games and one month to have Sportcenter's "Top Play" of the day, so I'll have to take it. Matt's got great hands. When he figures all the others stuff out, he's going to be lethal.

He transferred from the school his dad coached his senior year so that he could play quarterback. He played ONLY quarterback through his senior year of high school and all of college (not counting the 4 catches he had at Arkansas).
