Report at Noon today from DandyDon:
I have just returned from football practice at LSU and was very much impressed with the condition and spirt of the team. I arrived 30 minutes early and was standing at the entrance of the Charlie McClendon practice field when the players exited the bus and entered the practice field. It was very nice to see the players up close. I did not see anyone wearing any cast or other support system.
I thought that JaMarcus Russell and Matt Flynn threw the football very well with lots of zip. They seemed to be on the target 95 percent of the time. Russell looks to be several pounds lighter than this time last season and appears to be much more mature. All the receivers caught the ball well including Keron Gordon who was practicing with the wide receivers (unless someone else was wearing his jersey number). DaWayne Bowe appears to be the vocal leader of the WRs. At the running back position, Joseph Addai, Alley Broussard and Justin Vincent looked to be in mid-season form. Justin Vincent looks to be in great shape and appears to be a step quicker than the other two. Jacob Hester and Kevin Steltz both look to be in great shape at fullback. The offensive line is huge and very good. The first five were Rudy Niswanger, Brian Johnson, Will Arnold and Brett Helms splitting time and Nate Livings and Andrew Whitworth. The TEs looked to be solid with David Jones, Keith Zinger and Mit Cole leading at this time.
The defensive line looks to be very strong with Chase Pittman and Melvin Oliver at the two defensive end positions and Kyle Williams and Claude Wroten the two starting defensive tackles. Tyson Jackson, Tremaine Johnson, Brandon Washington, and Glen Dorsey practiced with the second group. Cameron Vaughn, Ken Hollis and E.J. Kuale are the starting linebackers with Ali Highsmith, Luke Sanders and Jason Spadoni working with the second group. The defensive backfield starters appeared to be LaRon Landry, Ronnie Prude, Chevis Jackson and Jessie Daniels, with Sammy Joseph, Mario Stevenson Craig Steltz and Curtis Taylor receiving equal time.
There were several returning varsity players that I did not see at the practice who will probably be working with the freshmen this afternoon. I would not weigh too much into the fact that eight or ten of the returning players are working with the freshmen. Coach Miles did not sign a big freshman class number-wise and is in need of extra players to practice with the freshmen.
