Chase James Green, 20, of Demorest, was spotted by an officer shortly after midnight as he stepped out of a pickup truck and threw a plastic cup on the ground. Green - a redshirt sophomore walk-on fullback - admitted to the officer that the cup contained an alcoholic mixed drink, according to a police report.
Green was charged with underage possession of alcohol, open container and littering, and taken to Clarke County Jail. He was bailed out of jail at about 2 a.m. Sunday on a $1,250 bond, according to the Clarke County Sheriff's Office.
Green is the sixth Georgia football player arrested this offseason.
He graduated from Habersham Central High School in 2003.

It's minor I know but I saw it on the CFN website and hadn't seen it here yet. Just news about a player who I don't even know sees the field during games. However, another sucky blackeye for alcohol and the SEC.

I think UT and USC are tied at the moment. There's still time for UGA to close the gap though.

With UGA losing one of their FB's to injury, there is a better chance that this walk-on plays now. This will not help his chances though.

This is very minor. Underage drinking is so rampant both on and near college campuses, that the police officers will often have the person simply pour the drink out and leave with nothing more than a warning. At least, that has been my experience. ;)

Yep, but it's major when it's done off campus, especially when driving.

You are right, the driving part is the bigger issue here.

Okay, here is my position. The article says that "he stepped out of a pickup truck." There is no information as to whether he was driving or not. If you are correct and he wasn't driving, then I stand by my original statement that this is a minor offense. I do not know of a college town with enough jail space and manpower to haul in the huge numbers of underage drinkers on or near campuses. I would think that there are bigger fish to fry like maybe whoever sold/gave him the alcohol.
If he was driving, it becomes a bigger issue. For that offense, I would better understand the arrest. This is just not a scenario where a player is out of control. It is simply typical student behavior. Perhaps, for revenue from fine collections, some cities may choose to focus on it more than others. I, for one, am proud to have contributed $50 to the coffers of that fine city. ;)

If he's behind the wheel even if he's not going anywhere, it can go down as a DUI.

Yeah, this is really minor though. He wasn't in a bar fight or cheating on a exam,he had some liquor in a cup. ;)

Only minor because the vehicle wasn't in motion. You know as well as I do that liquor in a cup behind the wheel is a lot more than minor.

And more than likely, if he had it in the car (not driving at the time) in an open container... then he had likely just been driving or likely to soon be driving.

Fernandomike, in Georgia, had he been seen getting out from behind the wheel, he would have been charged with Underaged DUI, open container, and Underaged possession. The Athens-Clarke County cop wouldn't have hesitated for a second to arrest him for that, not with the Govenor's 100 Days of Heat campaign at its midpoint.

Btw, this kid got a one game suspension, community service, and must take an alcohol awareness course.

I doubt that they could have charged him with DUI unless of course his blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit, I believe .08
I do get your point though.

He is underage. Anything above a .02 for minors is considered DUI.
His point was, that if there was anyway to get this kid for DUI, the Athens police would have gotten him for it.

Really, is that law specific to Georgia? I have never heard of that before.

Yeah, but DUI. Here in Tennessee, we are known for having a stiff policy. 2 days in jail and license gone for a year, huge fines, etc.
.02 is like one beer to an average sized fellow. I would hate to see a guy go to jail for 2 days and lose thousands of dollars over a beer.

Some of you may be confused. Here is the laws on DUI in Georgia.
For people 21 and over:
A .08 or above is considered DUI.
For Minors:
Anything above a .02 is considered DUI. So a minor can have like 3 sips of beer and get nailed for a DUI. The reason the number for minors is .02 is because some things like breath mints will cause you to blow a .01.

I am not in the least bit confused since you had previously told me this exact same thing. What I am curious about is whether or not such a small amount of alcohol carries with it a tough punishment like Tennessee's. Also, whether other states have similar policies. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate you for enlighting me.

Yes, it equates to a DUI here.
