Apparently Spurrier is VERY impressed with the 5 freshmen WR he recruited this year. He has said the freshmen are practicing harder right now than over half of the upper classmen. He also said he would not have won the SEC in 94 without some of the freshmen on his UF squad. When asked by a reported a couple of days ago if he regretted taking the Carolina job, Spurrier responded "you have to be kidding me". Also there is an unconfirmed rumor from someone who talked to some players today that some more scholarships were pulled today. May hear more about that later tonight or tomorrow in the media. Spurrier seems VERY excited to get things going on the 2nd of August.

Well that sucks about the scholarships, but I think the freshman will step up to take the place of these slackers!

I truly feel the scholarship deal will turn out to be a good thing. These guys know they have to compete to keep their free ride. I know everyone doesn't agree, but I don't see anything wrong with it, and it has worked for him for 20 years. I'm gonna sit back and let him do what he needs to do.

I'm tossed up on it a little myself. But overall, I agree with it.

With an academic scholarship, students are expected to maintain certain academic standards or else their scholly will be revoked if they consistently fall under that standard. So with an athletic scholarship, I don't really see any problem with revoking a scholly for a player that isn't meeting their athletic standards. I don't just mean performing well in a game, as everyone is entitled to their "bad days". But if a player is not performing well, and is not doing anything to try to improve that, then there's no reason to keep him on board.... at least not for a free ride anyhow.

Best and most sensible comment yet on this subject IMO.

Exactly. That is why I have no problem with it. Spurrier certainly has his reasons for doing it. I think it will be one more thing to help build a champion here.

I'm with ya all the way GT. It's gonna be tough the next couple of years with fewer scholly's to dish out. Might as well get em used to it now.

I agree. It's best to right your ship from the ground up and in the beginning. The players who are the slackers are hopefully upperclassmen, with the dedication coming from the newbies; this means that Spurrier is acquiring players to fit his system, mold and philosophy. While this may not bode well for the immediate future, it sounds as though he's taking the steps necessary to build a POWER. And I truly believe this is not only the best approach, but that it will actually bear fruit. Can you ijmagine the complete euphoria that will reign in Columbia if Gamecock fans become the proud recipients of a football POWERHOUSE? It will be something to behold!

I applaud the freshmen who are working their tails off and condem the seniors and juniors that are not showing leadership and working at least as hard if not harder. But I am happy to see Spurrier knows how to pick 'em!

Good thing for us is some of these freshmen are among the top in the nation at their position. Sure they have not played a college game yet, but look at freshmen from the past who have made such an impact i.e. Reggie Bush at USC, among many many others. If just some of these guys could break out early on we are gonna be in good shape. Win the East? Probably not, but could keep someone else from going to Atlanta, too! ;) :D
