View Full Version : Your Teams REAL Rival...

All of this talk of what game you are most looking forward to this season got me thinking. When push comes to shove, which team do you most love to hate? In other words, if your team wins just ONE game this season, who do you desire most to defeat?
As a Vol fan, there are certainly no shortage of teams you don't care for. Certainly, this is fueled by the Vols' consistent success over the past 2 decades. Say what you will regarding the Vols being consistently "overrated" in your mind, just keep in mind that it was only a few years ago when the Vols lost consecutive road games in Athens and Baton Rouge. In both cases, there was much celebration resulting in the goal posts coming down in both venues despite the fact that both Georgia and LSU have their own rich college football history. If those celebrations aren't considered the ultimate sign of respect for the Vols' program, I don't know what is.
All of that said, going back to the mid 80's, Auburn was considered the Vols' bitter rival. It was a thrashing of Bo Jackson and #1 ranked Auburn by Tony Robinson and the Vols that signalled the re-birth of the Tennessee football program. For several years, the AU/TN game was billed as "The Game" in SEC circles. Unfortunately, the expansion of the SEC squashed this rivalry.
Historically, few games match the hatred and pagentry of the 3rd Saturday in October. While their is no love loss between the 2 schools of present times, Bama's virtual "hibernation" (with a few exceptions) of recent years has really tarnished this rivalry in the minds of Vol fans.
Georgia's recent successes have certainly peeked the interest in this rivalry that had disapeared for many years and may well be considered "the Big Game" this season by many Vol fans.
While games with the aforementioned will certainly get the Big Orange blood pumping, they still pale in comparison (in my opinion) to the hated Gators. While this series lacks the long term historical relevance of several of the other rivals, the Gators still remain number 1 on my hit list. And for obvious reasons. The Gators kept the Vols (perhaps) from winning multiple NT in the mid 90's. There is no doubt in my mind that Peyton's Vols were the best Vol teams in history. Even better than the 97 NT Vols. Unfortunately, the Vols could never get over the Gators for many years. The "visored one" just added insult to injury for Vols' fans with his arrogance and numerous ribs. While the rivalry has certainly become more competitive of recent years and the Vols have finally enjoyed success over the Gators, there still remains a deep hatred that is unequalled by any others. Thoughts?? GO VOLS!!!

I love to beat Tennessee, but the rivalry has gotten almost too heated for my taste. Too much hatred. Also, we better not lose 4 in a row to Auburn. So I've got to pick Auburn for this year.

Tennessee/Florida is the #1 game to see here in Knoxville, And I'm sure in Gainesville. Allthough it hasn't been going on as long as some other rivalries like Bama, It's been fueled by many close games in the past 10-20 years.
2004 Florida/Tennessee game was the loudest (record 109,000 crowd) and best game I've ever experienced. They play it on CSS alot. Watch it, if you get the chance.
I have respect for Florida, but I still hate em. :D

It is really tough to choose between UF and Bama. Based solely on the fact that the Gators are in the East, they are our biggest rival. All the accusations flying around make the Tide a close second though.

I say UF for me. It seems we just have a mental block against them to where we even if we have a better team we play poorly or play too tight to do things we are capable of. Especially since they killed us in the 90's, its feels better to win that game than any other of the year.
UT is a close second.

Hmmm. Not sure. It's either Arkansas State or UL Monroe.
NOT!!!
I hate MSU, but they are not my rival team. They are a mere annoyance situated in the Gold Triangle of Starville-West Point-Columbus.
LSU is clearly the number one rival for the Rebels. As I have pointed out many times before, while LSU holds a 52-37-4 all-time record against Ole Miss, if you begin counting in 1937 when the NCAA realigned "major college" football, the record is a much more respectable 33-30-4. While I think Ole Miss Fans often envy LSU's program, we never fear them. A win against LSU is cause for great celebration. A loss to LSU is never seen as a disgrace.

Losing to the nats is simply not an option at UGA. EVER!
Since UGA has more rivals than anyone:
1. tekkimite geek nerds who play at the Joke by Coke
2. flawriduh: but most Dawgs enjoy vacationing there :p
3. ewetee: since becoming an annual opponent, they're a solid pick
4. allbarn aka clempson w/o a lake: more like fighting your brother
Most likely choice for future ranking: cackleacky of colanut :D

As far as rivals....

2. Tennesshe
3. uh-ga
...but the UT game is the most important b/c it's an SEC east game. So, it depends....but it's free-shoes, all things being equal.

Auburn is our "REAL" rival team, with the Iron Bowl always having a ton of buildup every year.
In recent years, the next in line would be Tennessee, but only because of all the media hooplah that stirred up with our NCAA sanctions. Even in the pre-game on TV last year, the idiots were saying that this is bound to be a big game because Alabama has a lot to prove after what happened with Fulmer. Hearing some players comment off-camera, there was absolutely nothing mentioned amongst the players about all of that other than they wish the media would move on.

yeah, clemson is absolutely the most hated. last time they were at williams-brice there was a huge line at the students entrance before the game. clemson fans were trying to get through so they could enter through the east gate, and they were just shoving their way through the student line. there were so many 'near-fights' at that game.
last time i went to death valley i was pinned up against a wall due to the tight squeeze right before the clemson players ran down the hill (such an overrated tradition). this clemson kid started taking big puffs of his cigarette while we were waiting and blowing the smoke right at me. i would have destroyed the kid if there wasn't a cop right there.

It's easily without a doubt chumpson for SC fans. There is no other team that even comes remotely close. As a whole their ignorance, attitude, and over-all lack of any kind of decency when it comes to SC fans is enough to make even the biggest pacifist of all SC fans want to flying double dropkick them off of the top of the stadium. There may be a few decent ones, but they quickly get lost in the sea of average chumpson fans. With that being said, excuse me while I go puke now.

1. Texas, though it's dying more and more each generation.
2. LSU
3. Judging by NCAA '06, it's Miss St., but I don't really think we have one after LSU which is only a minor rivalry right now. We have no clear-cut rivalry, which is what happens when your conference dissolves and you're the only REAL team in the state.

Maybe its because I don't understand them. Their program has never been anything special but yet they act like their god's gift to college football. I bet "not fun" is an understatement since you and your family were right there in the middle of orange when the brawl took place :( I just couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that crap on TV..I felt like I was having a nightmare. I mean I understand how our players must have felt losing on clemson's turf, but I wish both sides would have been sportsmanlike and not broken out into an all out FIGHT.

We have several good rivalries.
Auburn - always a heated, hard-nosed game. Tubby's lack of class makes you want to kick their a$$es even more.
Alabama - some of their fans think their history makes them forever good - not!
Ole Miss - saying "Geaux to hell, Ole Miss" can be heard at any game in Death Valley, whether the Rebs are here or not.
Arkansas - these sneaky ba$tards will beat you when you least expect it. They always play hard.
Florida - like punishing hurricanes, we see them every year. Usually a hard-fought game. I still miss the visor throwing.
Georgia - although we don't play every year, when we do, the tension is very high. Right now, we owe them major payback the next time we meet.
Tennessee - another team we don't play every year, but it is always a good game. I remember times when they've beaten us when I least expected it. I hope that's not an omen for this year!

Hey Gator, welcome aboard. Jump in on the discussions. Someone recently described us as a large somewhat dysfunctional family and I think that just about sums it up. Even with our various political, religious, and philosophical stances, we share a love of SEC sports. There is a lot of information here, a lot of teasing and fun. But, most of the time there is civility even though we are all chomping at the bit for football season. :)

At this point in UK football, I'd like us to beat ANYBODY. But, if we went just 1-10 this year, I'd most like that win to be vs. Louisville.
Here's why I'd love it:
1. They're our in-state rival, and we need to kick their tails this year so we can capture the best Kentucky recruits.
b. It would destroy their BCS dreams by damaging both their teams ranking and their conference's ranking. A loss to lowly UK doesn't play too well to the coaches and sportswriters :D

Agreeing with GatorMan about much of anything is a risky proposition.
First, it means that the good Colonel will simply adopt you into the minions of flotsam and jetsam that he toasts on a daily basis. A skewering by Kurtzy is not to be looked forward to, but GatorMan actually provokes and taunts him on a regular basis. I hope that you have a rather thick skin.
Second, once GatorMan does get cranked up he is hard to stop. He is kind of like the Ford Pinto that my parents bought me when I was in college. It continued to chug and wheeze for hours after removing the key and leaving the premises.
Third, we have actually gotten to like GatorMan...after a fashion. I think that all will agree that having only one vocal Gator here has been an acceptable condition. 3. UT >> Bunch of carpetbaggers who pull kids out of your state and then try to beat you with them.
4. UF >> recent lack of success against them has caused me to never take for granted victories against them like I did in the 1980's
5. Bama >> Not a lot of hate and not a lot of history between our two schools but I always relish a victory against the Tide no matter how good or bad they are.
1.UT-I hate them,I really think they are our toughest competition and our biggest rival.
2.Auburn-I dont like AU either, but they have game us some pretty great games,I still remember the 2002 game when Michael Johnson caught the game winning TD.
3.Georgia Tech-Just a good rivalry.Even though we have killed them the past 5 years.
4.UF-They have owned us for the past 15 years, but its still a great rivalry.

I hate Clemson so bad, but I love to be around the fans. If laughter is the best medicine then Moo U fans are the greatest physicians in the world. You can only laugh at their logic of "well we beat Miami this year, they won the national title a few years ago, so we must be the best team in the nation this season." Second would have to be UT, I am still pissed about taking them to double OT and coming up short.

This may be true but your amount of Peach State players must be at an all-time low. Maybe it is because our recent success against UT but I remember back in the late 1990's when some of our best players like Cosey Coleman, Deon Grant, Jamal Lewis, etc. left the state for Knoxvegas.

You have to remember that at that time, UT had Rodney Garner on staff. He was responsible for alot of the defections the Vols got from the Peach State. With Garner at UGA, it makes it harder for the Vols to go in and raid the state. The Vols will pull an occasional Chris Scott out of the state, but getting multiple SEC ability athletes out of the state of jaw-ga is probably not going to happen in the future.

The Texas/Arkansas rivalery is one of the best in the nation. They should play this game every season. I've never seen a Razorback fan foaming at the mouth like they do when speaking of Texas. It can get very nasty when these two teams are to play. Heck, I'd like to see the basketball teams play every year.

The team I absolutely hate the most is Georgia...must be because I teach in Georgia and there are so many Georgia fans...this hatred is from both my Auburn fan and South Carolina fan sides. Sad thing is...my husband is a Georgia fan....

Here is my story...
I grew up a South Carolina fan...went to the games, lived in Columbia...thought everyone..even folks in other countries either pulled for SC or for Clemson...seriously.
My dad got his doctorate at SC and my parents live for the gamecocks. We were good friends of Joe and JV Morrison when we lived there before Mr. Joe died.
In 1986, we moved to West Point, GA. It is right on the state line of AL and GA...about 30 miles from Auburn. In 1994 I went to Auburn and then graduated from there in 1997. That is why Auburn is #1 with me and SC is #2. I usually pull for Auburn...but if SC has a chance of going undefeated and AU is having a horrible year, I will pull for SC.
That is my story!

I couldn't agree more! The game last year was intense (i still can't get over that fumble). I would love to play them every year, but I doubt it will ever happen.

At this point in UK football, I'd like us to beat ANYBODY. A loss to lowly UK doesn't play too well to the coaches and sportswriters :D
Good to see you on the board...I don't recall ever seeing you before. However, don't be so hard on your team. Kentucky always has great athletes but for some reason they can't pull the upset (see UT in 2004, UF in 2003, UF in 1993 << all close calls). I always respect UK because they have broken our hearts (1988) and have given us some great games in the past.

I just discovered this site.. i dont use the computer much but when i do i like to read about anything SEC. Arkansas is my team..anyone who is raised right here doesnt like Texas and we probably wont play them for awhile... other then them it is LSU. Id like for Ark and Ole Miss to kind of develop a rivalry i think it would be a good one.
Nice meetin ya'll also.

I would've said UT a couple years ago but I've gotta go with Auburn. Their fans are the most arrogant bunch I've ever layed eyes on. Their getting worse than UT. Maybe its because I don't understand them. Their program has never been anything special but yet they act like their god's gift to college football. I don't see how any team's fans can act like that if you've got no tradition like them. Especially if you share the same state with the Crimson Tide!
Hmmm, all I heard while reading that was BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, WHINE, WHINE, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH

Clemson
I hate them with a passion. It's almost unhealthy how most I loathe them.
I have always been a gamecock fan. I've been going to games since I was three years old. I can honestly say that I didn't always hate Clemson. I never pulled for them, but I didn't hate them. The hatered really started when I was in the 10th grade, and went to the USC - Clemson game at Clemson with my girlfriend and her parents. Her parents are Clemson fans. My dad warned me that this may not be the best idea, but I didn't think anything of it, and I went. The drive from Florence to Clemson is a little over three hours, and on the way up there, and tailgating before the game, her parents couldn't be nicer to me. After the game, which Carolina won 34-31, they treated me so badly that I seriously thought I might have to find another ride home. Not one word was spoken on that three hour drive home. That started the hatered.
Two years later in 1998, I went up to Clemson again with a good friend of mine. This was Brad Scott's last year, and it was a bad one. Clemson was having a bad year too. Clemson won the game, and about five minutes after the game, we were making our way out of the stadium, but it was taking a while. We were stopped at the bottom of the endzone, and there was a Carolina player apperently talking to his mom and maybe even his grandmother on the field. All of a sudden, a group of Clemson students walked in between them, and one threw a drink into the mothers face. Thank God I had a sober friend with me or I would have kicked that guys ass, and would've spent the night in a Pickens County jail.
Yes, I hate Clemson with a passion.

As for the SEC.....if we were to call anyone a rival it would be Georgia. Georgia is the only SEC team we played regularly while we were an Independent. So we had a little bit of tradition with them before we joined the SEC. I don't mind UGA so much, but some of their fans over on Dawg Vent make me want to throw hot grease into my eyes.

Most of the UGA fans on here are pretty cool. However, one or two may still make you want to throw hot grease into your eyes. ;)
