What do you guys think of Notre Dame? This is one of the few topics that we have never really touched on here. Will they ever be back to where they once was or have they fallen into mediocrity for good?

No,I mean they will stay a 7 or 8 win team with Charlie Weis coaching, but they will not be a contender for the NC for a while. :D

I dont think they will ever be able to get back to the status that they were at in the past. Notre Dame used to be synonymous with college football, now the only thing they're good for is using up NBC airtime that would be better used to show college matchups from other conferences. They may have some good years in the future, but they will never be the Notre Dame that once was.
I said Yes b/c you didn't give a time frame. At some point in the next 20 years they will win a NC and will have played in two NC games..., my prediction....

Thats a fair prediction. I kind of think it will take longer than 20 years. I think they'll join a conference before they win another title. If you look at schools with greater tradition and history like Alabama or Michigan you will see that they've been good even when they weren't winning the NC. Notre Dame is usually mediocre when they ain't winning big. I know the Tide is at times to but we've had great seasons that were not NC's. Notre Dame football is simply overrated if you ask me. They were #3 or 4 on ESPN's most overrated list the other night. They weren't even bowling hardly until the mid-late 90's. I think Notre Dame has dug themselves too deep a whole to ever get out of again. ;)

ND hamstrings itself with its higher academic standards...in the era of scholarship limits and increased parity, not to mention its head coaching debacles of the past few years, there's no way they'll consistently be among the top 10 anymore. They basically didn't have a recruiting class this past year because of the Willingham/Meyer?/Weis debacle and that's going to haunt them for a decade at least.
Good thing they schedule all the service academies, BYU and Pur-who every year....at least they'll have a chance at 5 wins per season while they rebuild. But until they lower their academic standards (as Lou Holtz wanted to long long ago, imagine that), they cannot be competive. The last NC they won was the year before they re-instituted those standards...they'd lowered them when Holtz took the job and he left when they went to raise them up again. Coincidence?
