Just wondering, sounds like some of the same things that we got popped for.

How old is that story, beeds? To me, these allegations are much worse than what we were popped for. USC's violations included proving tutoring to students who weren't yet enrolled at the university (unless I missed a violation somewhere..?) and not for tutors doing current players' work for them. Or knowing about and not reporting plagerized papers submitted by players.
I know this thread is going to come off as a 'getting-the-spotlight-off-USC' but seriously, what we're facing punishment for is nothing compared to the allegations in that article. I could be a UT alum (ACK! *cough!* ACK!) and see that...

It's from November of 2004 I think. I knew it was old, I was just wanted to know if anything had come out of it. I think it's an on-going investigation.

Honestly I don't know what year this story is from. If it's real old that makes it even worse because nothing was done about any of these violations to my knowledge.

Last winter doesn't constitute old...to me that means these things are currently or until just recently were happening in Knoxville. I'm not saying they are.... but if this type of thing was going on in November, it means UT's current roster could have players who benefitted from tutors doing their papers for them.
Not to deflect attention from USC's situation but there's a difference between providing tutoring help to players who haven't yet enrolled (which we self-reported) and actually doing classwork for them. Not to mention failing to report plagerized papers...when i went to school, those things were considered cheating.

Looking at the address of the link, looks like it might be from 1999....it mentions the Fiesta Bowl and the last time the Vols played in that was 1999 and 2000.

Those alleged violations were thoroughly investigated, but UT was not found guilty of any wrongdoing. This happened several years ago. Also, I do not equate the alleged violations that occurred at UT to those that allegedly occurred at USC. Every school has tutors. If you go to any given school and look at things closely enough, you will almost certainly find differences of opinions on whether tutors are giving too much help. It is because this is often subjective. Some faculty members felt that Bensel-Myers and company were right, other didn't agree. I am certainly not proud of these things. But, it was dealt with and the system was re-structured as a result.
Now, someone within the USC athletic department is accused of sending tutors to people who weren't even enrolled in the university. They were recruits trying to gain eligibility. Whether or not that constitutes a violation is not subjective. That is clearly an extra benefit. I am not trying to bash you guys. Just pointing out that there are important differences between to two situations.

I hope you didn't take the point of this thread as a dig at UT or a diversionary tactic. I saw this on another board and was curious what had come of it. I'm glad you guys were cleared of wrong-doing. :)

Your questions are legitimate, even a UT alum (ack! cough! ack!) can see that.

FerandoMike,
Is Linda Bensel-Meyers still at UTK? I know she received a lot of flack from this.

No she is gone. She founded some group dedicated to reforming college athletics. She also was reportedly writing a book detailing her experiences at UT and relating stories told to her by women allegedly victimized at both UT and other schools around the country.

The year was 1999 bythe way.Ut has since moved the tutors out of the athletics department and moved them back under the english department.
