By 81dog. If you are a thin-skinned Gamecock fan you may want to look away.
You have to hand it to the Poultry People. Lou Holtz racked up major
NCAA violations faster than winning seasons, bowl victories, or SEC
titles. In fact, the sum of the NCAA violations on his watch is more
than the total of his winning seasons, bowl wins and SEC titles
combined. Yet even now, after he's dipped them in batter and left
them for the NCAA deep fryer, most of them consider him a genius.
Most of them consider this "unfortunate development" to be "no big
deal." Some of them feel like Spurrier will have them contending for
SEC glory THIS YEAR.
Wow. The extent of their ability to ignore history, probability, and
reality makes Baghdad Bob look like a stone pessimist. What does it
mean to pull for the Poultry? It means you thrive on getting your
ass kicked. It means you smile in the face of loss after loss to UT,
UF, UGA and Clemson. It means that your one crummy 7-4 season
leading to an ACC title entitles you to puff out your chest as much
as any fan of Alabama, Southern Cal, Michigan, or any other place
with actual football history.
Ganja Toke U fans base their unreasonable expectations on the fact
that they were actually good in the 40s and 50s. Auburn fans base
their unreasonable expectations on the fact that Ears Tuberville
finally had a season where he lost less than 4 games, and there's no
salary cap in the SEC West. But from what fountain of optimism have
the Chickens drunk so deeply? The Holtz era was the pinnacle of
acheivement for South Carolina football...and they had a losing
record. They never so much as finished above 3rd in the East. They
never beat UF or UT. Much as I admire their spirit, I can only say
the lot of them must be on drugs. Or should be.
Beating South Carolina, for any SEC program with aspirations, has
never been a sign of anything except that you won't go winless for
the season. Losing to them has always been a sign that you are
mediocre and headed nowhere. If Spurrier can turn this garbage scow
of a program around and make it a champion, it will be a feat equal
to winning the Kentucky Derby on a burro. I cant wait to see how The
Genius reacts when the roof starts caving in on his low discipline,
low talent, HIGH expectation program. He may flip that visor all the
way from Columbia to Myrtle Beach.
Long may they suck. I would say the SEC should have left them out of
the conference, but then we wouldnt have them around for comic
relief every summer as they confidently predict that THIS WILL BE
THE YEAR. Not this year, you refugees from a Truett Cathy picnic.
Just like every other year, you're going to uphold the proud
tradition of South Carolina football, where 6-5 is cause for
rejoicing.

Hmmm... something tells me that guy doesn't like USC. I have to wonder though, when folks write this type of thing about a program, do they really think that programs aren't capable of change? No program starts out as a powerhouse. Dynasties aren't built overnight. No program is ALWAYS successful. USC seems to be trying to do what it takes to break out of their mediocrity. They hired Holtz in an attempt, but that didn't work out. They've hire Spurrier, who has an undeniable track record as a winner in the SEC. He hasn't had a chance to prove what he can do at USC yet. I think it's awfully presumptuous for anyone to say that just because USC has always been below par, that they'll always be below par. Barring crippling NCAA sanctions, I say that the SEC is gonna get all they can handle with Spurrier's Gamecocks in the next few years.

Losing to them has always been a sign that you are
mediocre and headed nowhere.
So that being said, what did it mean when the Dawgs lost to them? Over-ranked and underachieving, yet again.........
I wonder what his story would read like if the Dawgs were to lose to Carolina....would there be a follow up to this story saying that since UGA lost to the poultry, they are mediocre and going nowhere? Spare me, please
It will all pan out in September ;)

Hmm, now I know this is a Football chat, but doesn't the part of his post above remind you of someone else......perhaps Jimmy Cheetah? Felton is a good coach (other than for badmouthing Carlos just because he knew his chance to go 3-13 just slipped away), but it'll be years before he can clean up UGA basketball from that fiasco.

This guy acts like GA has been spanking SC every year. Not hardly. The losses to UGA have been hard fought, close games. And to think the mighty Dawgs had to fight that hard against the lowly chickens. No, this won't be 'the year", and yes, 6 wins is cause for celebration at USC. Bet you 9 of my last 10 that USC starts beating UGA before they do UF and UT, so worry about UGA and SC and the other SEC folks can take care of themselves.

I think in some ways that UGA is a bigger rival for us than Clemson. Think about it, in every sport, making it to the playoffs (or bowl) as well as your placement depends on your finish in the conference. It's really hard to have a true rivalry outside of your conference and have it mean anything. I think that's why, on a national scale, that noone really cares about USC-Clemson. Only in baseball the first year we were in Omaha did a USC-Clemson game really mean something on a national level (although I have to admit that was awesome, and would probably still feel the same even if we hadn't won both games).

Well, it is hard to say. I consider USC a rival. I mean there is a good bit of hate among the 2 fan bases. USC fans say Georgia fans don't give USC the respect that they deserve (which is probably true) and UGA fans say that USC fans are delusional. Also, the 2 years that we lost to USC were pretty unbearable, which I am sure is the same way for USC fans when Georgia wins.
Most UGA fans would probably say that USC isn't a rival. Although, deep down, I bet most of them do think USC is a rival. You don't see that kind of post from a UGA fan about Vandy or Kentucky, well maybe Kentucky basketball but you get the point.
Also, I think beginning these next few years you will start to feel a rivalry with UT and UF. UF for obvious reasons and UT because of the history between Fulmer and Spurrier.

True, but from what I have witnessed from USC and Clemson fans, that rivalry means A LOT. Maybe not from a "better for the team" stand point if you will, but it certainly means something to the fans that put up with opposing fans daily. It also means a great deal from a recruiting stand point. I know it is early, but Clemson is doing extremely well so far in recruiting. I know Spurrier will get his as well, but winning that game does help in state recruiting a great deal.
I can relate to what you are talking about. I go through the same thing every year regarding who our biggest rival. To Georgia fans that live in southwest Georgia, Auburn is our biggest rival. To Georgia fans that live in southeast Georgia, Florida is our biggest rival. To Georgia fans that live in Atlanta, Georgia Tech is our biggest rival. To Georgia fans living in North Georgia, Tennessee is our biggest rival. While beating the SEC East teams is best for the team, losing to Georgia Tech is absolutley miserable. Of course I live in Atlanta so some UGA fans may think differently. I would also like to add that with the number of kids from Atlanta going to Auburn because they couldn't get in to Georgia, and then moving back to Atlanta after college, losing to Auburn is pretty bad also.

Wasn't trying to take a shot at Auburn's academics. But what I said is true. With the Hope scholarship now going to all kids from Georgia with a B average minimum, it has made Georgia EXTREMELY hard to get into.

100% correct. The jerk that wrote that post must not be talking to any Carolina fans I know or have heard of. Realistically, most of the SC fans on here have predicted from 6-5 to 8-3 at best, with most of us expecting/hoping for a 7-4 season. Most of the SC folks I know (not on this board) are thinking along the same lines. No one is saying we'll contend for SEC glory this year. It'll be at least 2-3 years down the road before any of us realistic Gamecock fans dream of an SEC championship. ;)

Yeah, but you have those fans at any school. That would be like me talking about how there are UGA fans predicting a undefeated season just because Im sure that somewhere there is someone who thinks it will happen. I do agree that there are some SC fans who have gotten ahead of themselves with the hiring of Spurrier and what not, but most of us are pretty realistic about things. It seems to me that the original content by 81dog was just an attack at the whole school of SC. I dont have a problem with him saying whatever he wants, but when you put stuff like that of course you should be ready for whatever comes back at you. Like I said to me it seems like more of an attack than a well thought out post. Reading stuff like that just reminds me of how glad I am to have found this site, where for the most part you dont have to read garbage like that and can share opinions with people who appreciate their team and others. Of course we have some trash talking, but for the most part its all in good fun. Thank God for SECTalk.

Same here, Cocky. I've finally given up on The State newspaper's chat link. There are a few guys in there that constantly spew like this guy. Alot of regulars in here that know a tremendous amount about SEC football. I have no problem with a little smack talk, but to belittle a program that tries so hard to become like UGA, UF, UT, or any of the other big schools seems crazy. We just can't recruit as well because we haven't gotten the tradition yet. But before long hopefully Spurrier can help remedy that.

Hey, it's hard to build an elite program when no matter how hard you try, and how hard you train, when we go to sleep at night we know at best we can only be the second hardest working team in the SEC, because no one, and I mean no one, is working harder than Meyer's gators.....

Well I am sorry to hear about Holtz cheating... You guys should have been better than how you played with all those rules broken! I'm not going to say too much about it though, because every team in the SEC has cheated, some just haven't got caught (TN)! I believe Arkansas got popped for a rule they broke a few years ago, Alabama cheats as much as anybody! I'm sure Flordia has done some shady recruiting before. I think USC is going to be a solid team, but instead of 2008, it's looking like 2012. Sorry about it!

You are quite correct that (secretly, at least) most GA fans think SC is a rival. Also, SC may start to feel a rivalry over the next few years with UT and UF for the above-mentioned reasons. However, this is only half of a good rivalry equation. To be a serious contender for rivalry consideration, you must actually defeat said opponent at least one of every three tries, just enough to be aggravating and instill the fear factor of possibility into the upcoming game.
In the case of GA, this has been accomlished; since 1975, with the advent of "real" football at USC, with the tenure of Jim Carlen and beyond, the cocks have beaten the dogs roughly 1/3 the time. As a matter of fact, from 1988 through 2001 they were 6-6 vs.their cross-border rivals (yes...rivals) . In the last 27 games, the record stands at 9-19 (SC vs. GA).
So, until UT and FL start losing one in three to SC, there can be no rivalry, as the very definition of the word bespeaks respect, and that can only be induced through the occasional victory over your rival.

I disagree about having to beat a rival 1/3 of the time to be considered a rival. We were 1-10 vs. Spurrier's Gators yet he still considered us his BIGGEST rival. We are 14-3 vs. GT and we still consider them rivals. Now, you have to be a little more competitive than say Vandy.

With the latest news coming out of usc, I don't think my analysis is too far off. And whatever one's thoughts about usc and/or Spurrier, this makes things more difficult....as it would for anyone.
Even if we had our whole team together and no off the field problems, our situation would be futile b/c Urban Meyer is coach at Florida and everyone knows that means SEC title (I mean look at BG and Utah), I just hope teams in the SEC are able to keep Meyer's teams from putting up 55 every week, that would make us look like the MAC.....

The following post by a Ohio State Fan on the Clemson Website Illustrates my point:
I came across this on a Ohio website: (From a Ohio State Fan recalling an encounter at the Outback bowl)
I went to the Outback Bowl in Tressel's first year and sat in front of some of the most cocky, annoying fans ever. Every time S.Carolina made a play they would boast about football in the south, or that's what happens when you have speed, or if OSU lost yardage they would crack on OSU's speed. I finally had enough after Bellisari fumbled the football and the guy tapped me on the shoulder and said he wanted to get a picture of me and my wife by the scoreboard after the game. I slapped the beer out of his hand and somebody went and told on me. Eventually cooler heads prevailed. I came close to getting the last laugh as OSU made an almost amazing 4th quarter comeback. After the game, the SC fans were walking by as we stood waiting for the OSU players to emerge from the locker room calling us losers and doing their annoying @#%$-a-doodle-doo walk. It sucked big time and the only thing I could say to them was, "you better enjoy it because this is as good as it gets for S.Carolina football". I could not of imagined how right I really was. The next year OSU wins the national title and SC has not been to a bowl game since. And now there is talk that SC may have to forfeit some games including their biggest win in the Lou Holtz era, the '02 Outback Bowl against the Buckeyes. Yes! I might get the last laugh after all. And if this does happen, does that mean that Tressel's bowl record will be a perfect 4-0? Go bucks!!

Go bucks!!
Hmmmm, didn't know that we USC fans were "getting under anybodys skin"..there are ANNOYING fans at any school. You made your comments based on the post you read from an Ohio State fan on a CLEMSON website. I didn't know that hoping for a 7-8 win season would come off as being arrogant and "walking around like we're big time".
On another note, how ironic is it that an Ohio State fan would talk about our Bowl wins against them being tainted for violations? Didn't Ohio State commit violations before their championship season?

If you look back at one of my earlier posts (forget which one) it says that SC has pretty much sucked for 100 years, and yes, we get jacked up when we win a few games. Most USC fans are excited that we might actually win 6 a year... I think it's safe to say we all have some fans we're ashamed of.

OK lets talk about some annoying fans In the early 90's I went to Athens with several friends. We won the game, me and my friends had come to the game without tickets so we were sitting right in the middle of UGA fans. It had been quiet and we had not said anything to anyone while leaving the stadium. We had some wonderful UGA fan's who threw empty beer bottles and whiskey bottles at us. Then when we finally made it back to the car we had arrived in we found 3 of the 4 tires slashed. So I have never been back to Athens for a game again. Now every school has bad fans and that was an extreme case but I think it makes my point.

Well, well, well. You kids are at it again. Bickering about football supremecy and dirty fans. Silver Britches seems to be the only one talking any sense. I know UGA and SC have their fair share of fans that you wish would have an unfortunate "accident" or that the police will finally catch up with them and put them in the cell with BIG Bertha. But we cannot classify all the fans with this classification.
I have met many wonderful UGA fans and know many wonderful USC fans. All of which would ask a visiting team's fans to stop by for a beer and some chicken. But unfortunetly many don't remember these fans so vividly, we only remember the fans who did something so revolting or rude that it is burned into the permanent part of our memory.
So I ask us all to try our best to forget the bad stuff and remember the good parts of our visits and our visitors. And remember that every fan wants/hopes/wishes/and talks his team up into what they want them to be. Yes even UGA, Flordia, OSU, and the mighty Southern Cal. So don't dog these fans for these wishes, just listen to their reasons and remember your own hopes. Maybe their wishes aren't that far off after all.
P.S. Some of the fans I enjoy most on SC gameday are 3 UGA fans who come to every game decked out in UGA apparell. They help give a third person view on the action.

Just like every other year, you're going to uphold the proud
tradition of South Carolina football, where 6-5 is cause for
rejoicing.

Champ Gaily that is the Georgia Tech coach right? He might not be able to handle UGA but I believe they are in "contention" for the ACC this year. Whether that is gross overstating by the magazines or not I am not sure. I wish we could do as well versus Clemson as UGA does vs. Tech!

Carolina has certainly had their misfortunes over the years, even under Lou Holtz. But I have one question. If you don't aspire for better things, why compete? If your going to look at the ways things have been and assume that is the way it will always be, I don't see getting out in the Carolina summer heat and wasting good time to try. Look at Spurrier's bio. Read interviews and articles about people who know him. They pretty much ALL say the same basic thing. If it can be done, he can and will do it. Now, people talk about the off the field problems this offseason. Yes, there have certainly been more than our share. But, what I am loving and makes me excited is the way Spurrier handles it all with a smile and pure professionalism. He continues to say we are fine, and that the players who are gone are not gonna be missed. NONE OF THEM. He is building something special here. I can feel it. Lou would be saying "Oh god, what are we gonna do. We have lost all these players, and now the NCAA is breathing down our neck. We may not win a game". I can hear it now. Not Spurrier. Spurrier is sincere, non smoke blowing, no BS at all. If he says we are fine, in his heart that is what he means. He has never waivered through any of this. Do us Carolina fans expect an SEC Championship this year? NO. Could it happen? Sure. What can't? We may win 5 or we may win 9. I don't know, you don't know, Spurrier don't know. What I love is what he is building here. He is making players accountable. He is holding them ALL to the same standards. He is making them a TEAM. Not whiny ass individuals who want to get their way, and expect it. We are not necessarily talking smack, we are just trudging on and excited about the possibilities. What is wrong with that? Yes, we smack talk. Some of us have stated we feel Carolina is going to beat UGA. I was one of them, and still stand by that. I just feel it. We will see. That game will tell me much more about the upcoming season. You Georgia fans, and others, continue to talk about our lack of talent. How do you know that? Have you studied this team that closely? If so, I am impressed, because I could not tell you a whole lot about UGA, except the little bit I read, and have seen your QB play. Lou Holtz ALWAYS had good recruiting classes here. There is a great deal of talent here, who simply need some attitude adjustments.

I totally agree with GT. Talent isn't something we are lacking. Leadership was. I think Spurrier has solved that. Under Holtz no one knew who was in charge. Was it Lou, was it Skip, or was it one the defensive coordinators?
