LSU's Fullbacks & Tight Ends

Jacob Hester (6’0”, 225, SO) and Kevin Steltz (5’9”, 245, SR) will split time at the fullback position. Hester is more of an offensive threat and Steltz is the better blocker. Steven Korte (6’2”, 230, true freshman) will be in the mix. I think that LSU is in great shape at the fullback position. LSU is also in great shape at the TE position with David Jones (6’4”, 260, SR), Keith Zinger (6’4”, 247, JR), Mit Cole (6’4”, 260, SO), walk-on Andrew Wright (6’7”, 248, SO), and true freshman Kyle Anderson (6’6”, 260).

Auburn is very good at both postions also...

FB
Jake Slaughter 6-2 244lbs. senior
Very rarely carries the ball and is a used mostly as a blocker.

Carl Stewart 6-1 230lbs soph.
Will play the Ronnie Brown role this year. Runs well and catches the ball well.

Mike McLaughlin 6-2 226lbs. Rsf

TE
Cooper Wallace (6-4, 265, Sr.)
He made several All-SEC teams

Cole Bennett (6-5, 256, Jr.)
Mainly used as a blocker

Charles Mullen (6-4, 241, RFr.)

Two of our highly rated recruits coming in this season.

The 4th rated TE in the country
Tommy Trott 6-4/240/4.80

and the 12th rated TE
Gabe McKenzie 6-3/215/4.75

A side bar...

One of our wideouts that gets alot of playing time is Anthony Mix a 6-5 250lbs + senior. He averaged over 15 yards per catch last year.

Those two TE recruits sound pretty good, and there is no doubt about the ability of Anthony Mix... he is awesome (and big and tall and strong).

No doubt about that. Pope is outstanding; probably the best the SEC has seen in a long time.

Damnit. The title of this thread is misleading. I come in here expecting discussion about the Ole Miss Cheerleaders and the UGA Dance Squad, and y'all are talking about football? Whassamatta witchoo?

Our fullbacks are pretty stout with Payton Hillis and Brandon Kennedy, but our tight ends are just above average at best.

Hopefully he'll turn out as good as Randy McMichael in college and the pros except without the girlfriend beating attitude.

Who really knows about our tight ends? I'm not sure Cut knew the position existed. In all honesty, he probably did but thought they were just blockers. I forget the exact number, but seems like I heard our tight ends caught about 6 passes last year. Combined.

Coach O plans to use the tight ends far more extensively.

Lawrence Lilly has phenomenal hands for the size he is and he runs decent.
Jimmy Brooks is a fatty that would be used more in run situations.
Robert Hough is raw and hasn't played.

We have no true fullbacks. Our only one Antonio Lamar left school after becoming academically ineligble. But as for tight ends, our current ones are similar to your local high school tight ends, they are an extra blocker. But our two incoming freshmen tight ends Johnathan Hanna and Shea Mckeen are both very good pass catchers. Both were highly recruited.

I suspect that Spurrier will get that problem fixed post-haste! He'll use tight ends.

Very true. One thing that surprised me is that Spurrier just recently got a commitment from a fullback. I didn't think Spurrier was a big 2 yards and a cloud of dust man. Which is what fullbacks are usually used for.

They are also usually very good blockers; bigger than RBs and can stop or slow an oncoming rusher. I think he's looking to protect his passer.

Maybe, but why would a fullback chose to play for SC and be a celebrated lineman. When he could go and do that and make some yardage at another school.

Our TE's are young, but very talented, especially Marc Winston (who's father was a star at Arkansas).

But I'll challenge anybody to show me two better fullbacks than Peyton Hillis and Brandon Kennedy. I feel very comfortable saying Arkansas has the best fullback in the SEC in Hillis and Kennedy was a two-year starter before Hillis was on campus. Kennedy is the cousin of former Denver (can't remember what team he went to this year) starting strong safety Kenoy Kennedy. Throw in Farod Jackson and I think Arkansas has the best fullbacks in the SEC. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean much :)
