DandyDon looks at the LSU / Tennesse Game

LSU's third game of the upcoming season will be against the Tennessee Volunteers on September 24 in what is being billed as the SEC game of the year between two teams in the opposite side of the bracket. I suspect that ESPN will feature the game as their game of the week and will have a crew of experts on campus to do the Game Day program.

In my opinion, Tennessee is the best team that LSU will play this season and they are going to be one of the premier teams in the nation on defense. Tennessee only lost one starter, OLB Kevin Burnett, who will be replaced by former Abbeville native Jason Mitchell who was outstanding in Spring practice. Tennessee's defensive and offensive lines will be very good, but probably not quite as good as LSU's. Tennessee's Arron Spears and Albert Toeama are two of the best offensive tackles in the SEC, and Jesse Mahelona and Parys Haralson are two of the best defensive tackles in the SEC. Running back Gerald Riggs, who LSU recruited very hard, is a preseason All-America candidate. Riggs' backup at the running back position is Ja’Kouri from Plaquemine. Jason Allen, who LSU also recruited very hard, was moved from Safety to cornerback during the Spring and will team with Roshaun Fellows to give Tennessee two of the top cornerbacks in the SEC. Allen led the SEC in tackles with 123 last season. The only weakness on the Tennessee team is at quarterback. Rick Clausen, former LSU quarterback, and Erik Ainge are the two leaders heading into Fall practice. Rick Clausen, who started against Ole Miss his sophomore year, has a slight edge over Erik Ainge. Tennessee's head coach is Philip Fulmer who has posted a 123-31 record in 13 years at Rocky Top and that is among the best winning percentages in the nation. The game should be a great one. Dandy Don picks LSU to win 21-17. Some of the above information on the Tennessee Vols came from SEC Sports, Lindy’s SEC football and Athlon Sports.

Well, you could make a case for LSU, Georgia, or Tennessee to have the best offensive line in the SEC. While giving praise to Toeina is nice, you are forgetting two better linemaen. The guard tandem of Cody Douglas and Rob Smith match up with any in the SEC. As far as the defensive line goes, UT will have as good as a defensive line as anyone in the country. Some teams might have more depth at the DE position than the Vols, but the first four can stack up with anybody.

The back-up RB to Riggs has not been settled yet. Arian Foster and Ja'Kouri Williams have the inside track to be #2 on the depth chart, but there are two freshman coming in that will battle for that spot(LaMarcus Coker, Montario Hardesty). Williams is thought of as 3rd down back. Foster has all the tools to be an everyday back, but must prove his mettle. Hardesty, for the time being, has the inside track on playing this year as it relates to freshman. Now, you are wrong about the weakness of the Vols. Ainge will have to be terrible to lose the quarterback derby. While Clausan is the perfect back-up, there is no denying Ainge's talent. The weakness of the Vols, until they prove otherwise, is the saftey positions. With Allen moving back to corner, it will be how well the new safeties do that will determine how good the Vols can be.

Definitely going to be one of the season's biggest games. Sort of the Clash of the Titans. Can't wait!

This is going to be one of the best games in the SEC, if not in the nation.

I'm voting this as #2 game of the year, behind the Texas-Ohio State game.

And both games come so early! Very defining games, for sure.

Agreed 100%.

The good news for the Tennessee/LSU game:
No matter who looses, Both will most likely have a fairly smooth rest of the season, and should(dodging Florida/Bama) see eachother once again at Atlanta.

I'd put it at #4....perhaps #5 if OSU and Michigan are undefeated when they play:

1. OSU/Texass
2. UF/UT (bigger implications b/c both in the east)
3. OSU/UM
4. UT/l-essU
5. OU/Texass (#4 if Texass beats OSU and meets an undefeated OU)

Why this? Texas will lose... Again... As usual.

HAHA...maybe, but if Mack can't win the RRS this year, he never will.....and I agree: I think Stoops' defense wins it in the end.
