DandyDon looks at the LSU / Tennesse Game
LSU's third game of the upcoming season will be against the Tennessee Volunteers on September 24 in what is being billed as the SEC game of the year between two teams in the opposite side of the bracket. I suspect that ESPN will feature the game as their game of the week and will have a crew of experts on campus to do the Game Day program.
In my opinion, Tennessee is the best team that LSU will play this season and they are going to be one of the premier teams in the nation on defense. Tennessee only lost one starter, OLB Kevin Burnett, who will be replaced by former Abbeville native Jason Mitchell who was outstanding in Spring practice. Tennessee's defensive and offensive lines will be very good, but probably not quite as good as LSU's. Tennessee's Arron Spears and Albert Toeama are two of the best offensive tackles in the SEC, and Jesse Mahelona and Parys Haralson are two of the best defensive tackles in the SEC. Running back Gerald Riggs, who LSU recruited very hard, is a preseason All-America candidate. Riggs' backup at the running back position is Ja’Kouri from Plaquemine. Jason Allen, who LSU also recruited very hard, was moved from Safety to cornerback during the Spring and will team with Roshaun Fellows to give Tennessee two of the top cornerbacks in the SEC. Allen led the SEC in tackles with 123 last season. The only weakness on the Tennessee team is at quarterback. Rick Clausen, former LSU quarterback, and Erik Ainge are the two leaders heading into Fall practice. Rick Clausen, who started against Ole Miss his sophomore year, has a slight edge over Erik Ainge. Tennessee's head coach is Philip Fulmer who has posted a 123-31 record in 13 years at Rocky Top and that is among the best winning percentages in the nation. The game should be a great one. Dandy Don picks LSU to win 21-17. Some of the above information on the Tennessee Vols came from SEC Sports, Lindy’s SEC football and Athlon Sports.
