I like Gator's ranking. But I think BIG XII is alittle better than the Big 10, only slightly.

Close calls though

I would venture to say that the SEC is the best all around athletic conference as well.

I don't know if you can actually figure that out, but the SEC seems to have some prominence in various sports.

As far as the SEC vs. ACC battle goes heres what I think:

Both conferences are extremely talented and respected. Both have great traditions in two big sports.
ACC owns basketball
SEC owns football

However, I would dare to say that the ACC is on a fast rise right now regarding football. Teams like FSU, Miami, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Boston College have made big impacts on the weekly rankings that us SEC fans hold so dear. Lets take our best team versus their best team and we really dont know who would win. Right now I would say (unfortunetly) Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech would be the matchup.
Regarding basketball, come on...UNC, Wake, Duke, NC State, Maryland, BC...all historical powerhouses and known for being victorious. The SEC has good teams, duh, but we just arent known as a strong basketball conference HOWEVER THE TIMES ARE CHANGING. Kentucky, UF, MSU, Bama...all great programs that can put up a great fight. Long story short, the conferences are inverse but in both areas of "weakness" (not a good word but work with me) both are gaining ground very fast and it will be very interesting to see what the future holds.

Yep, that's why I think both the SEC and ACC are tied for first (but we all know the SEC is better!)

Again, the Big XII over the ACC. For those who agree with this: Do you think OU and Texass are stronger than VT, scUM, and free-shoes? I don't get it....and as bad as the north is, the Big XII's also-rans are no way near the ACC's middle tier, imo.

I honestly think that Texas,Texas A&M,OU,Texas Tech,Oklahoma St,and Nebraska are stronger teams than FSU,Va Tech,Miami,North Carolina,Clemson and Georgia Tech.I also think that the ACC has 3 or 4 teams that are just plain horrible Duke,North Carolina,Wake Forrest, and Maryland. While the Big XII really just has Baylor and Kansas. So all around I think the Big XII is a better conference. :D

Wait a sec, though: I'll give you Tech, aTm, OU, OSU, and Texas....but Tech had no defense and went 7-4, losing to New Mexico (???), while NU didn't even make a bowl game (at 5-6). The Tarheels would beat NU probably 7/10 times, and we'll see how NU does against Wake soon enough. Maryland is down again, but they were riding high of late....RF could get them back at any time. Still, UVA (3 losses to f$u, scUM, and VT), Clemson (wins over scUM and usc), and Boston College (8-3 in '05) have to be better than most of the Big XII teams.

F$U > aTm
Va Tech : Texass
scUM > OU
UVA : TTech
Clemson > Nebrasska
BC < OSU

I've been thinking about the problem of how one "ranks" the conferences somewhat objectively. One way to do it is to look at the SEC Record against other conferences. Below is a listing of that construct. It is listed as Conference, Wins over that conference, Losses to that conference, Ties, and overall winning Percentage.

1. Division I-A Independent, 21-29-2, .423
2. Big Ten Conference, 85-89-7, .489
3. SEC Would Fit Here
4. Big 12 Conference, 308-300-24, .506
5. Atlantic Coast Conference , 866-732-82, .540
6. Big East Conference, 70-58-9, .544
7. Pacific-10 Conference, 61-38-7, .608
8. Conference USA, 671-329-39, .665
9. Western Athletic Conference, 267-127-20, .669
10. Mid-American Athletic Conference, 80-18-1, .813
11. Mountain West Conference, 43-9-0, .827
12. Sun Belt Conference, 192-11-4, .937

The biggest problem with this model is the parametric issues. That is there are big differences in the number of data points for various conferences. For instance, there are only 171 datapoints for the Big Ten, while there are over 1600 for the ACC. I think that there are two ways to solve this. First, interpolate everyone's record against everyone else and average the ranking. Second would be an analysis of variance (which would partially account for the differences.) I'll kick this around for a couple of days and see what I come up with.

I won't rank independents because those teams are not in a conference and mainly don't choose to be. Therefore, they are not worthy, IMO. lol

1. Southeastern Conference
2. Big XII Conference
3. Big Ten Conference
4. Atlantic Coast Conference
5. Pacific 10 Conference
6. Conference USA
7. Mountain West Conference
8. Big Easy Conference
9. Mid-American Athletic Conference
10. Western Athletic Conference
11. Sun Belt Conference
