Vols signee Myers fails to qualify
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Offensive lineman Darius Myers will not attend Tennessee this fall as a freshman because he failed to qualify academically.
Myers, out of Cordova High School, said he plans to attend Hargrave Military Academy and try to enroll at Tennessee next year.
Some of Tennessee's signees are already on campus taking summer school courses while the rest will enroll later this summer.
Linebacker Todd Cox of Harding Academy in Memphis does not qualify and could attend a junior college.
Two more players -- linebackers Gerald Williams of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., and Andre Mathis of Erie, Pa. -- have not yet made it through the NCAA Clearinghouse to become eligible.
Team officials have not commented on which signees will not make the team.

Myers, Williams, and Cox were all considered to be real long-shots. This is the first that I have heard of Mathis. I hope he makes it. He is a fine prospect.

Williams and Mathis should make it through the clearinghouse. Myers and Cox were not to big of a surprise as most in Volnation did not think they would qualify. That is fine as JUCO or prep school should be the perfect opportunity to work on their physical being as well as improve on their grades. I'd expect both to re-sign with the Vols in 2006.

This is where UT gets their solid year-in, year-out depth from....
....and their year-in, year-out off-the-field problems, too.
note: this is not a jab at UT, I am just making an observation. :o

they do tend to go hand and hand...
But as a coach, what are you to do? You take a chance on these kids, and when they go out of bounds, you gotta push 'em back in.
Living in Chattanooga, where UTC plays, I would much rather have the situation in Knoxville than Chattanooga. Chattanooga can't buy a game, has little fans and the Atheletic Department is crumbling. Remember for every person in Knoxville getting in trouble, there are 10 doing the right thing... the Athletic Department is strong (Well once they get all 15 BB coaches paid off) and they do make a difference in a lot of kids lives..
