Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, who'll be at Dreamland BBQ Ribs in Norcross from 6-8 p.m. Thursday for a book signing, gives five reasons why his old coach, Steve Spurrier, will be a hit at South Carolina:
1. He's from the Southeast. He won the Heisman in the SEC and coached Florida to arguably one of the greatest decades in college football.
2. His offense is fun to watch. The SEC could use another dose of the high-thrills Fun 'N Gun offense.
3. Plenty of excitement on the sideline. SportsCenter will have more highlights than just what happens on the field.
4. Press conferences worth watching. It's refreshing to have someone who actually says what they're thinking.
5. He can win. The time is right for South Carolina to win an SEC championship, and Spurrier's the man for the job.

Great read Neo, thanks. You know, all these ex-players and people who know Spurrier well have NO doubt it seems that he will be a winner here at Carolina. However, they certainly know less than some on these boards. Talent not as good, won't be able to recruit, no QB, on and on, etc. etc.

I have no doubt in my mind that Steve Spurrier will be successful at USC. It's going to be hard for him to match his success that he had while at Florida in the "new" SEC. It's the SEC that he "created".
Spurrier changed the complex of the SEC when he went to Florida. Most teams playe differently before his high scoring offense was introduced. Other teams simply had no choice but to start throwing the ball and try to score points or they just weren't going to compete with the Fun N Gun.
Spurrier has a good defensive coordinator, and you can bet his offense WILL score points. It's going to need to score points, and a lot of them to be successful. The major SEC schools now have high power offenses and a pretty darn good defense. I guess I am trying to get to the fact that the SEC is, in my opinion, to competitive for another 90's type run for Steve Spurrier, USC, UT, or Urban Meyer and UF.
Tennessee will score a lot of points this year and won't give up many, as will LSU. Richt has changed UGA for the better and I believe they are overall a better football team than in the past. We don't know what Meyer can do in the SEC, but with a load of talent already in place I see no reason to doubt he will be just as successful in Gainesville as he was at his other two stops.
Off the field you have to look at recruiting. I know we discussed it some on the recruiting board, but I believe Spurrier will have to change his mindset towards recruiting. At Florida he said many times that he only wanted kids who wanted to be Gators. He also said many times that he wasn't going to go flying around the country and beg a kid to come play football for him. Recruiting was always important, but the internet has made it 100 times more accessable for the fans and media. Look at the recent growth in the recruiting services and you'll notice that. Seems alot of programs and coaches have stepped up their games in order to bring in top shelf talent. Which, I think, has changed the landscape of recruiting over the last few years. I think Spurrier is going to need to change his attitude towards recruiting also in order to get enough talent to compete at the higest level with the rest of the SEC.
Spurrier, heck any SEC east team will have an even harder road to Atlanta now. I think it's a better conference, with better talent, and better coaches than before.
The question to me is not if Steve Spurrier will be successful at USC, but just how successful can he really be there?
Sorry for my ramblings, just my opinions I've come up with in the time since he announced as coach at USC.

The question of HOW successful Spurrier will be here intrigues all of us Carolina fans. We have better talent here now than many believe. An SEC Championship I believe is entirely possible. National Championship? Who knows. We certainly have a coach who can do it. Even coaches like Bob Stoops would not be surprised.

TNGator:
Your comments are exactly what alot of Gamecocks have been considering. I believe Coach Spurrier understands that very perspective and sees the opportunity as a great challenge. You're right about the SEC changing and Spurrier being a catalyst to that change. I actually thought the same thing, however, my opinion of Spurrier has developed over the few months he has been in Columbia. He doesn't strike me as someone that would try old techniques, no matter how successful they may have been.
I look for Spurrier to take the SEC to another level. Remember, before he went to Florida, everyone thought that SEC football was the bomb. But Spurrier has more energy and determination than I've ever seen from a Gamecock coach, bar none. If nothing else, recruits will think twice about SC now that they have a chance to play for Spurrier. At SC, we've never really ever had much of a shot at top level talent. Columbia is a great SEC football town and has alot to offer recruits. Those that put it down are simply ignorant and haven't traveled far enough away from Mama to know what they're talking about.
It won't change overnight, but I seriously doubt there is another SEC coach that will out-work Spurrier. I only hope that Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, etc... think they are playing the ol' ball coach (he hates that name) with the same ol' plan, and the same ol' cursed chickens at USC. Let's play ball!!!!!

TNGator,
I appreciate your taking the time to write your post. You bring out some excellent points. I just can't wait for Spurrier to prove all of the bad-mouthing critics wrong.
