VIRGINIA BEACH — And then there were five.
Landstown High School football star Percy Harvin says he has narrowed his college list to Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan and Southern Cal.
Harvin, a wide receiver rated by some recruiting services as the nation’s top player in the Class of 2006, has planned a recruiting trip to the University of Florida next weekend and said he expects to visit each of the other four schools before making a decision after his senior season.
Among the schools Harvin has eliminated from consideration are Virginia Tech, Virginia and Tennessee.
Harvin also said he and Landstown teammate Damon McDaniel, also a highly touted receiver, want to attend the same college.
“We’re just good, tight friends like that,” Harvin said. “He’s got pretty much the same offers as I do.”
Harvin and McDaniel each have more than 30 scholarship offers and helped Landstown to a 14-0 season and the Group AAA Division 6 state championship this past season as juniors.
Harvin, a 6-foot-1, 190-pounder, gained 985 yards receiving and 690 rushing but saved his most impressive performance for the state championship game. He scored four touchdowns, intercepted three passes and piled up 476 all-purpose yards in a 47-20 victory over Robinson.
He later was named the Associated Press Group AAA state Player of the Year.
Earlier this month, Harvin led Landstown to a share of the state title with Great Bridge in the Group AAA boys outdoor track and field meet. Harvin won the long jump, triple jump, 100 meters, 200 meters and was part of the winning 400-meter relay team.
During the winter, Harvin helped Landstown to the Group AAA state basketball championship game, in which he scored 27 points in the Eagles’ loss to Woodside.
