Yeah...that's what they said about the "Visored One"....minus the bit about being a tireless recruiter.

Spurrier has been recruiting since he has been here. Doing a fine job I might say. He has said several times that was simply not true what people said about him not recruiting at UF. He said that is part of the job, plain and simple. :)

I don't think we can consider DisturbinUrban in Darth Visor's category just yet; probably never. Just like Miles at LSU, you'll know by game 3 if your coach has what it takes.

Well, if people described your recruiting history in that way, would YOU attest to its validity (if it were true, that is), lol? I didn't think so. I wouldn't either.
Anyway, my comment was really addressing the issue of Meyer as an "offensive genius." People said very similar things about Spurs, particularly that his offense (at Duke) couldn't work in the fast, aggressive, dominant, attacking SEC. It's a mantra that sounds pretty familiar of late.
Same criticism, different faces.
Let's give it some time.

One thing I have already found, and love, about Spurrier is he will look you in the face, tell you the truth, and anything else on his mind without flinching. I respect that about him. If he did not recruit, nor did not like to, I do not believe he would have ANY problem telling people that and probably making a joke of it. He simply said that whoever came up with that does not know him as much as they think they do. Being a Gator fan, I would have thought you knew more about Spurrier. :)

You do have a point there. I think Urban's offense will be a success in the SEC. I don't think it will dominate the SEC like the fun n' gun did for years but I do think it will work

I do. And that's how I know you're being misled. It's widely known that Spurs was a lazy recruiter who didn't like the process....give it a few years and then get back to me. Let's see how he likes it in 2008.
How he perceives himself as a recruiter is hardly the point and certainly cannot be used as evidence to efface the "accusations." That's just common sense.

And it's important to realize that the Fun-n-Gun wasn't working so well toward the end of Spurs' tenure at UF. That's something about which people don't often talk....consequently, I think usc is in for a rougher ride (than UF's 90s run) because Spurrier's offense isn't "new" anymore.

I think that UGA's defense may matchup better against Meyer's scheme than anyone else's. The Bulldogs play their base and keep everything in front of them. They are so fundamentally sound and well coached that it may be hard to get them out of position with all that mis-direction stuff that UF will run. They lost some studs, but they will have plenty of athletes on defense who can make plays. Georgia will once again have one of the best defenses in the conference and will prove formidable for any offensive scheme.
I worry about us against UF because we blitz so often. This may allow us to blow-up alot of their plays in the backfield. But, if we get fooled or miss a tackle it could be off to the races. I personally would like to see us adapt a little of UGA's style for this game. We have done it before with success. Last year, against Georgia we surprising abandoned our blitz-happy, man-to-man style and played tons of zone which appeared to catch them off-guard. Anyway, in Chavis we trust. He'll have a good game plan.

Thanks for the compliments.
Your defense really did throw us off last year. If I remember correctly, you faked a lot of blitzes and then dropped back into coverage. The key was for David Greene to read your fake blitzes and then check off into a new play to counter the blitz. UT didn't blitz though so our play didn't work. I hope I'm remembering correctly.

I totally agree. The rest of the SEC has caught on to the fun n' gun offense.

It was still winning 9 and 10 games a year. Here in Carolina, we will take that.

^^^What GT Said ;)
The F-N-G (no new guy comments, please) may have been 'old' by end of first run in the SEC, but look how long it took everyone else to catch up.
He will run some of the same basic plays but with a lot of new looks that will still bring fits to DC's in the SEC.
As for Urban, his system will beat on MSU, Vandy and KY, but I think that the other teams in the conference are a little smarter than he is when it comes to getting their defenses ready for mr pass-happy himself. As others have stated before, it's easy to dominate the mid-majors when you have offensive cohesiveness and a better system than most; I fail to believe that he could bring that same team from Utah, play an SEC schedule and run the table like that.

True, the Fun n' Gun was beginning to decline in its effectiveness toward the end of Spurs career at Florida, and you're right 9 and 10 wins would be great for USC, and you should totally take that and be happy if he could do it. But you have to remember, he was only getting 9 to 10 wins at Florida (a place that is superior to USC in talent, facilities, and at attracting recruits.) It will be much harder for Spur to supply 9 to 10 when he can't just ride the raw talent supplied at Florida.

I can respect that opinion. I will tell you that Spurrier says Carolina's current facilities (several that are brand new) are the nicest he has ever had. Also, we are right now on the short list of some very high recruits for next year. That is something that normally did not happen here this early. :)

Which brings me back to my original point.....that's what they said about Spurrier and his success at Duke in the ACC that, at the time, wasn't setting the cfb world on fire.
And as far as Utah playing in the SEC, well sure. That's why Utah's athletes are not Florida's athletes....you can't compare apples and oranges. But I shouldn't have to actually type that out.....

I actually think Utah would have beaten a lot of SEC teams. Maybe not the giants in the conference but they would beat 6 of 12 easily and possibly even more than that.
