A look at North Texas, LSU's first football opponent of the season. Darrell Dickey is the head coach for the Mean Green and he coached the TEs at LSU from 1991-93. Also on the North Texas staff is Mike Bugar who was the defensive coordinator at LSU from 1990-93. Coach Bugar is a very emotional and exciting coach who I enjoyed seeing on the sidelines when he was at LSU. Bugar coaches DTs at North Texas.
The Mean Green will be a very good team on offense if they can find a replacement for two-time All-Conference quarterback Scott Hall. Sophomore Joey Buerly had a slight edge over Daniel Meager at the end of Spring practice for the QB spot. The strength of North Texas' offense will be at running back with the return of freshman AllAmerican Jamario Thomas (5'11", 195) from Longview, Texas, who led the nation in rushing in 2004 with 1800 yards, averaging 180 yards per game. Thomas runs a 10.4 100 meters and was the Sun Belt conference player of the year last season. Patrick Cobbs, who led the nation in rushing in 2003 but had to sit out the 2004 season, will also be returning to the Mean Green offensive backfield next season. LSU will likely not face a better one-two running attack next season.
North Texas will depend on the run to score points, but they do have a very dangerous wide receiver in Johnny Quinn (6'1", 198) with sprinter's speed. Quinn averaged 18 yards per catch last season. North Texas' offensive line is very young but does have one great offensive lineman in Dylan Lineberry (6'3", 300) junior from Houston, Texas. Weston Thaggard (6'4", 300, SR) from Longview is also a top-notch offensive lineman. The Mean Green play a 4-3 defense and will be very young up front with their best returning defensive linemen being Raifu Durodoye (6'2", 240) from Denton, Texas, a friend of LSU redshirt freshman lineman Herman Johnson. The strong suite of Noth Texas' defense will be the linebacker position with six returning linebackers who played last season. The only returning starter from the defensive backfield will be D.J. Covington, a senior who played his first two years of college football at Coffeyville, Kansas, Community College. North Texas has an excellent field goal kicker returning in Nick Bazaldua who was perfect inside the 40-yard line in 2004.
North Texas was 7-4 last season with a loss to Southern Mississippi in the New Orleans Bowl.
