They seized about $40,000 in cash and killed more than 300 roosters.
So they stop this stuff out of humanity for the animals, but kill the confiscated roosters?!?! WTF?

"Newport, adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains, is 42 miles east of Knoxville."
An entertainment venue for Vol students, no doubt.:D

Ok besides this being the most REDNECK thing I have ever heard of, and it being an embarrassment to the state in general, it is really just ignorant. However, as much as I am not in favor of hurting animals, these roosters have been trained to fight, they are dangerous. I have never seen the act of cock fighting first hand, but at one time I was married to a hick,(not something I am proud of so we won't mention that again) and he evidently had been to a fight or two, and they are no joke. I mean like the pit bull of pultry.

This made the front page of my local paper, since Newport is around 20 miles away, so it was kinda weird to see this posted here.
I just can't believe that 144 people were stupid enough to do that stuff...

Thats terrible. The thing that I think is the worst is the dog fights that some sick people do. That kind of stuff is just upsetting.

I'm in total agreement. THe training of animals to fight to the death is Wrong.
But I believe I remember as a young child, my grandfather telling me that this is the instinct of the rooster naturally and that in nature they would fight to the death on occasion. However, usually the loser would run off before dying but humans keep them in the ring so they must fight to the death. They are in reality fighting over females in order to be the alpha male.
But I still don't see why thaey had to exterminate all 300 roosters, when putting them in individual cages would work too.

'Ya know what's funny... cockfighting was LEGAL in Oklahoma until a couple of years ago. My wife's father and stepmother live about an hour outside of Oklahoma City, and there are all these little half circle shaped shelters in pens in people's yards. I asked my paw-in-law what they were, and he said that they were rooster houses and that's where they keep and raise fighthing cocks. And those Big 12 teams always want to make fun of the South about being backward rednecks. Though I think that cockfighting might still be legal in Louisiana.

It occurs, for sure, as does pit bull fighting, but it is certainly not legal.
Louisiana has its share of low-lifes, as does every state, and we also have a goodly share of haute culture as well; much more than some states.

The ASPCA says it is still legal:
http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=lobby_sessions&s_state=LA
Name Prohibition of Cockfighting
Bill number HB 681
Sponsor(s) Rep. Karen Carter
Action Died in House Agriculture Committee
Would have banned cockfighting and prohibited the associated acts of promoting or conducting an organized cockfight, possessing a cockfighting weapon, amputating the
comb or wattles from a rooster or modifying the natural spur of a rooster, being employed at a cockfight, attending a cockfight or breeding or transporting birds for fighting. Had this legislation passed, Louisiana would have been the 49th state to ban this brutal and barbaric sport.

That story is the funniest thing I have ever seen on this board, particularly the quote from one of the cock fighters who lost his birds.
