LSU junior catcher Matt Liuzza was picked in the 30th round by the Chicago Cubs and junior LHP Jason Determann was drafted in the 35th round by the Boston Red Sox. I am very happy that Liuzza was drafted. I believe that he will return to LSU for his senior season and improve his draft status by at least 20 rounds. As for Jason Determann, I believe he will enter med school at Shreveport. Greg Smith, LSU's junior LHP, was drafted in the sixth round by Arizona and told an Alexandria TV station Wednesday that he would probably go pro. The MLBD completed 48 rounds on Wednesday and the SEC has had 60 players drafted. Tennessee was the only SEC school with first round picks and they had two. Eli Iorg was the 36th pick of the first round by Houston and Luke Hochevar was the 40th player picked in the first round by the LA Dodgers. Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt had seven players drafted in the first 48 rounds. Georgia, LSU and Auburn each had six players drafted. Tennessee, Mississippi State and Alabama had five players drafted. Arkansas and Florida each had three and Kentucky did not have anyone drafted.

OXFORD, Miss. - Seniors Barry Gunther (http://olemisssports.collegesports.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/gunther_barry00.html) and Cooper Osteen (http://olemisssports.collegesports.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/osteen_cooper00.html) have been selected on the second day of the 2005 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, making it eight Ole Miss Rebels to have been picked thus far in the first two rounds.

Gunther was taken in the 25th round as the 762nd overall pick by the San Francisco Giants, while Osteen was selected in the 31st round as the 937th overall pick by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Gunther, the Rebels' starting catcher for the past two seasons out of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., is batting .285 this season with four home runs and 27 RBI. The solid defensive backstop was also drafted in last year's first-year player draft in the 17th round by the Florida Marlins. Gunther has been a pivotal part of the Rebels' pitching staff ERA of 3.64, including the sophomore-to-junior year improvement of fellow draftees Eric Fowler (http://olemisssports.collegesports.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/fowler_eric00.html) and Matt Maloney (http://olemisssports.collegesports.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/maloney_matt00.html).

Osteen, the two-year starting second baseman from Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Indian River Community College, is batting .321 this year with a team-high 13 stolen bases and is second on the team in runs scored with 60. He has teamed up with freshman shortstop Zack Cozart (http://olemisssports.collegesports.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/cozart_zack00.html) to form a double-play combination among the best in the SEC and has spent the majority of the time this season as the Rebels' leadoff hitter. Ole Miss will host Texas this weekend, Saturday-Monday, in the NCAA Oxford Super Regional for a chance to be one of the final eight teams that will make the trip to Omaha, Neb., for the College World Series.
