A 28-second standing ovation and a larger overall turnout than Spurrier had...even after winning the '96 title. Meyer's speeches have outsold Spurs' and Zook's tours at every stop, many fans--numbering in the hundreds--have been consistently turned away for lack of even standing room.
The train is rollin'.

the fans love a coach who trumpets how good the team is with no doubts. the pain comes when he has to prove his statements in the sec.its gonna be funny watching that smiling face hit that brick wall

What an amazingly perfect example of what a spoiled football program with huge expectations can accomplish with the fresh new up & coming coach taking the helm.
I know Meyer's system may have been successful at his other stops blah blah blah, he hasn't had to match wits on a week-in week-out basis with the likes of Steve Spurrier, Phil Fulmer, Mike Richt, Tommy Tuberville and the rest of the SEC coaching greats. That goes for assistants as well as the head guys...they adjust in-game much faster, hide vulnerabilities better and scheme much more thoroughly than anyone Meyer's seen.
Y'all ever heard of Rocky Long, Joe Glenn, Tom Craft or Gary Crowton? Those would be the names of the best coaches in terms of wins & losses that Meyer had to scheme against during his Utah tenure. Fisher DeBerry is up there too, can't forget the Air Force Academy's head guy. The best of the lot that conference had to offer while Meyer was at Utah was Rocky Long from New Mexico with an outstanding two-year record of 15-10.
Temper those expectations a bit Gator fans....this Urban renewal project is being done in the SEC, not the Mountain West Conference. As a Gamecock fan, I am now very well aware that just as many games are won by those on the sidelines as are decided by the people between them. Urban MIGHT be the next great coaching mind.....but 4 years spent at two mid-major conference schools and he's attracting more fans to lunches than the year after they won the national championship? Is that something to be proud of or scared of?

An outstanding post, Wayz! You have nailed it down with great precision. Almost the same can be said of Les Miles at LSU. He, too, is making great speeches (much more "media and crowd friendly" than Saban was), but he is yet to coach a down in the cerebral, high-speed SEC. But, it is to be noted, Miles has coached against better coaches and better teams than has DisturbinUrban. Alas, however, as GateauxNation will surely point out, not with as much success as DisturbinUrban had in his Mountain West environment.

Exactly. Coaching against "better" competition doesn't mean much if you don't win very often.

That it will, even though I feel you drastically overstate your case. But, hey, to each his own. ;)

That is a good post. I will remind, however, that most UF fans still love Spurrier and will never forget what he did for them. I work with a couple of people from Florida, and the majority are still crappin that they now have to face the man they used to go out rooting for. Should be some great games between those two. I do love Spurrier's comment about him once. "Coach Meyer has had a great four year coaching career."

Classic Spurrier quote almost as good as the Auburn quote about the library burning down "The only real tragedy is that only 15 were colored" :D Florida fans shouldnt be worried until about year three, thats when Spurrier wil have his offense of fun-n-gun caliber.

Yes, the Auburn quote was probably one of the funniest he has ever had. I agree about the offense, however I think he is going to rattle some branches this season. I have been keeping up with the team much more than usual for it being the offseason, and have been reading the interviews with the incoming freshmen, and they all are very talented and say they fully buy into Spurrier's plans, and want to make an impact their freshman year. Some are even talking about Freshman of the Year honors.

Perhaps it's my tendency to feel like I've adequately explained what it is I am trying to convey that lends me to "overstating" my opinions. thank you so much for y'alls friendly reminder that you don't require such....err...assistance in the future.
My apologies,

We do....and I know I always will. Believe me, we're not sleeping on usc and Spurs. You've got our attention. That said, I think Spurs' history with Fulmer will end up generating a bigger rivalry with UT. They've already started in, lol.
I miss those days. But Meyer is a lot like Spurrier in that regard....it's one of the things I really missed with Zook.

Yeah i can't wait for more of the slander to fly out among these new coaches and the old ones. Its one of the greatest things the SEC can do, dis each other, but still be a good sport about it!
