School board bans band from performing 'Louie Louie'

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) — A pop culture controversy that has simmered for decades came to a head when a middle school marching band was told not to perform "Louie Louie."

Benton Harbor Superintendent Paula Dawning cited the song's allegedly raunchy lyrics in ordering the McCord Middle School band not to perform it in Saturday's Grand Floral Parade, held as part of the Blossomtime Festival.

In a letter sent home with McCord students, Dawning said "Louie Louie" was not appropriate for Benton Harbor students to play while representing the district — even though the marching band wasn't going to sing it.

Band members and parents complained to the Board of Education at its Tuesday meeting that it was too late to learn another song, The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reported.

"It's very stressful for us to try to come up with new songs for the band," eighth-grader Laurice Martin told the board. "We're trying to learn the songs from last year, but some of us weren't in the band last year."

Dawning said that if a majority of parents supports their children playing the song, she will reconsider her decision.

"It was not that I knew at the beginning and said nothing," Dawning said. "I normally count on the staff to make reliable decisions. I found out because a parent called, concerned about the song being played."

"Louie Louie," written by Richard Berry in 1956, is one of the most recorded songs in history. The best-known, most notorious version was a hit in 1963 for the Kingsmen; the FBI spent two years investigating the lyrics before declaring they not only were not obscene but also were "unintelligible at any speed."

Another fine example of political correctness running amok. :D

A little perspective since I live about 25 miles east of Benton Harlem...err Harbor, MI: This is the same town that had a riot last fall because a white cop chased a black youth on a crotch-rocket motorcycle and the pursuit ended with the kid crashing and dying. The town rose up and started destroying things, claiming that the cop shouldn't have been chasing him through residential areas and that's what caused the crash. The cop's stance was that the kid should've thought about that before he broke into the house I chased him from. :D Kid broke into a house, saw that he was spotted, jumped on his speeder, ran, got lost, missed a turn, crashed into a house and died. And since it all finished in a poor black neighborhood and the cop happened to be white, they rioted and tore their own town up for a couple days. This story is just funny compared that that irony, i think. :D

Trust me, Benton Harbor is a dying town much like the rest of the rust belt. It's a smaller version of Flint, put it that way....a very depressing place actually.

I'm a young guy, and I don't know the lyrics to the song, so I've got a question. What are the "inappropriate" lyrics that these wheels were squeeking about?

Yeah that's what I want to know... I heard on the radio today that the FBI investigated the lyrics for two years! They determined that the lyrics were unintelligable (hope I spelled that right)... :D

That Principal should be fired or demoted to janitor for sheer stupidity. As discussed above, no one in the band is old enough to even know (or care) what the lyrics are. This is a song I have heard every high school band in my area play, all without the PC-boohoo, liberal crap. Which is exactly what this is.
