View Full Version : Spring Practice

so I hear that we started spring practice today and have 15 scheduled practices culminating in the Red-White game on April 16. Of course the position that everybody is watching very closely is QB. Nutt said that they were all missing passes trying to be too perfect; case of the jitters in the first practice. I'm really interested to see Herring's new defense in action. He has switched us to a 4-3 scheme with a lot of motion at the snap. Does anyone know what D we used to run under Womack? was it a 3-4? He seems no nonsense so I think our defense will be much improved this year with a year under their belts. The game at SoCal is gonna be tough though!!

it was like 4-2-5 or something like that, 3 numbers

Herring was actually talking shit about the USC game, saying something along the lines of they better watch their asses bc we're going to give them hell, damn i love this guy

First of all: among minds of normal intelligence people would normally first assume when you see USC = University of Southern California (defending national champs)....not South Carolina (defending....uhh, have ya'll ever won anything?). We play SoCal the second game of the season.

Second of all: Reggie Herring is one of the highest paid defensive coordinators in the country. He had the top defense in the country last year at NCst. He gets 1 mil for three years...the only higher paid coordinator I know of is Fisher at LSU getting 1.2 for three years. Hardly a no-name.

Third of all: as I've said numerous times---just cause you got Spurrier doesn't mean ya'll will win anymore games this year. We are 6 and 4 all-time against ya'll and have 2 western Division championships to your ZERO eastern division championships. Our all-time AP Poll Rank = 18. South Carolina's all-time AP Poll Rank = 72....thanks for playing.

We won the track National Championship 3 years ago, We won the Sec in Basketball in 96, we have won the sec in baseball 3 times. Its easy to say win the Eastern Division when you've been playing in the west and before this year is was decrepid for 6 years. Try playing UT, UGA and UF for the east every year. Oh yeah and next time(if) you get to the Sec title game in football try not embarrassing yourself again against an east opponent. By the way since 2000 Ark is an impressive 4-12 against Sec east opponents.

We've won a Football national championship. We won the west twice.
We've won a Basketball national championship. We've won the SEC tournament in basketball. We've won the SEC WEST in basketball numerous times. Been to the final four numerous times and won the NIT.
We were co-champs in the regular season for the SEC last year with Georgia in baseball.
Oh, yeah....of those four victories against the east...how many of them were USC?

Last time I checked SIMH, trash talk section of the board was further down. Seeing as this thread is about spring practice, I could give a rat's a$$ how important any team is if they have Spurrier as the head coach. Back to the spring practice talk...although I am a big fan of MJ, there will be someone else to step up this year. Not saying they will fill his shoes but there is potential there. Read a good article today where Herring was stating how he expects the players to perform in practice. Herring was saying that Sam Olujabutu was now a third string linebacker as a result of his practice performance...I think that speaks volumes and hopefully our D will get their act together.

Thats how much your whole program is relying on your coach...no one cares about the team, they want to see the coach. Weird, "important on the national scale"....how many games did ya'll have on national tv last year? We had 6 games on national television in a rebuilding year, so does that make us "important on the national scale"?....ESPNU is only on some weird cable provider that no one even gets....I'm gonna laugh when ya'll come to Fayetteville and get smoked...Its weird how USC gets one fluke win last year by three points and act like they run stuff...you still ended up with only one more win than us and still didn't go to a bowl (I don't care about your reasons)....face the facts that since Arkansas and USC joined the SEC at the same time we have had FAR more success than ya'll have had...in all sports. Not just in the SEC, but also on a NATIONAL scale (see 1994 Basketball National Champs and first round NFL/NBA Draft Picks..)---I guess that might make us more "important on a national scale".

Spurrierismyhomeboy
03-31-2005, 12:47 AM
First of all the spring game is also on ESPN 2 so people will watch it on basic cable! Second is wasnt a fluke Jones just made a very stupid play at the end of the game by chunking it 50 yards in triple coverage! But I like your fat tuba player!

I notice you didn't have much to say about the real substance of the response...I guess there's not much you could say....I'm sure the band dorks at USC are way cooler and I bet your definitely the person to ask...curious, did you see ESPN (not 2, U, News, Classic, or any of the others that no one watches) Sportcenter last night or this morning? Who was that guy they were saying is the fastest rising player in the draft (possibly first or early second round) and the most atheletic player in the draft.....oh yeah, MJ. Hmmm, is that some "national importance"?

Spurrierismyhomeboy

jbuzbee
03-31-2005, 01:03 AM
yeah...but I don't remember anybody mentioning his name on Sportcenter....I also don't remember him breaking any SEC records. If you are gonna try to argue that Troy Williamson can even be compared to MJ....thats sad....I won't be surprised if MJ proves to be a better WR than Williamson without having even played the position in college...he's obviously faster, bigger, jumps higher, overrall more atheletically gifted.....

Spurrierismyhomeboy
03-31-2005, 01:09 AM
Your kidding right Jones is a Ricky Williams waiting to happen, just look at him! Williamson had a better 40, better hands, and has played WR all his life! If you look at the scouting reports hes only behind Mike Williams, and Braylon Edwards as far as WR, SI had him going from top 10 to mid-first!

Thats false, and in the NFL speed doesnt matter as much as you think, there are a least 100 recievers faster than Mike Williams but hes a top 10 pick, Jerry Rice wasnt the fastest reciever either hands and crafty feet matter Jones doesnt have the hands! Plus just think what Williamson could do with a QB who could read defenses, and throw a decent ball. Hes the next Marvin Harrison!

SIMHB, better lay off the crack pipe man if you think that the 40's times are false and MJ doesn't have the hands. Its pointless to try to argue or even debate with you in this thread to begin with. 40 times aren't everything but there is a reason that MJ is the fastest rising pick in the draft. Matt Jones is definetly an impressive athlete. I know he made me sick a couple of times when he burnt USC. He will do alright in the NFL as long as he gives up smoking dope and gets his head in the game. Sometimes I would watch him and his head looked like he was in outer space. And his play at times resembled it. In the NFL he is going to have to focus at all times or someones going to knock his head off. Still I'm glad USC doesnt have to see him anymore.

GAMECOCK_FAN
03-31-2005, 09:08 AM
All I've seen and read about Matt Jones is positive. No doubt about it, he should be a great addition for one lucky team in the NFL. He has the ability to thrive as a receiver in the NFL with his size, dedication, and speed.
That said, I expect the same from Troy Williamson.

Plus just think what Williamson could do with a QB who could read defenses, and throw a decent ball. Hes the next Marvin Harrison!

So now all the sudden 40 times don't matter? Also, Jones has really good hands...according to Jon Gruden, Jones had the best catch out of everybody in the senior bowl practices....a one handed catch in the end zone over Corey Webster....also Jones played WR three out of four years in high school so its not like he's never played the position before. Your arguments are weak at best...Williamson is not even in the same league as Rice or Harrison...and you saw the evidence so just saying something is false = blind idiocy. I don't know where your getting your facts that Mike Williams is rising to the level of a top 10 pick cause all I've read is that his stock is dropping after running a 4.6 40 and sitting out a year from football...You're just a homer, and the worst kind...a homer who starts smack talk on other teams threads with absolutely no facts to back up your rants....How can you be a smack talking homer for a team that since joining the SEC is one step above Vandy and UK?

jbuzbee
03-31-2005, 12:02 PM
According to ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen: "His hands? I think he has the best hands in the draft. He's a basketball player, gifted enough after his junior football season at Arkansas to earn a starting spot on the basketball team within two weeks of his late arrival.

"We charted every pass thrown to him during the Senior Bowl week, and [he] caught all but one," one personnel director said.

So, as a receiver, he's bigger than Southern California's Mike Williams, he's faster, he's more explosive and he might have better hands."

"He was the best player in the SEC the past two years," said Ron Zook, the ex-Florida coach. "Now that's a mouthful. Think about the guys who have played in the SEC the past couple of years."

LSU coach Nick Saban said, "Matt Jones single-handedly won more games than any player in the SEC."

South Carolina coach Lou Holtz called Jones the "MVP" of the SEC.

Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom said, "I'm pretty sure I never have seen one like him, and I coached in [the NFL] for a lot of years. I'd take him, and … real high." Georgia coach Mark Richt called Jones the most deceptively fast player he had ever seen.

"On any given day, he could be the most dangerous player on the field, " Richt said. "You try to take good angles on the guy, and he's still past you."

I tend to think that both of these guys will make very good pros. I am really excited about Jones. The thing that makes him so unique is his size. There are a few guys who run as fast, jump as high, change direction as quickly. But, there is nobody with his SIZE that can do those things. He is an absolute freak of nature and will be an total nightmare for corners to matchup against. If he can learn to run crisp routes, I think that the sky will be the limit for him.

WooHawg
03-31-2005, 01:09 PM
SIMHB is just trying to ruffle some feathers while making no sense whatsoever. Its ok, every board has to have one of those guys. I too think that if MJ gets his routes down and just has more time to learn the position at a higher level he will do great. Big shoes to fill but I think with the QB's we have at the moment things will be ok. I am anxious to see what happens in the coming weeks as the competition gets better. Overall though our defense has to only get better after some of the performances last year. Herring appears to have a firm grasp on what needs to be done and how to achieve what he expects to see by the first game.

jbuzbee
03-31-2005, 02:44 PM
I like Herring alot...he's hardcore. According to Pierre Brown they had to run "up downs" when they "loaf" in practice. They did 140 the other day. I think a "up down" is running up and down that steep hill leading up to Stadium DR.....Brown said that "20 will make you never loaf again, so 140 really drives the point home".

WooHawg

You nailed it on the head as usual man. God, I love to read your stuff :). I agree. Troy Williamson will be a very, very good NFL reciever. So will Matt Jones. Potentially, there's no question who could be better and its Jones. Like you said, with that size, speed, etc.... he'll be a DC's worst nightmare. Williamson is a very accomplished WR and no doubt will have a very good career -- barring injuries -- but he's no Harrison. But who knows, both are going to be good in my op.

Great posts Buz. I can't even begin to think about responding to them all, but I loved them all. I'm glad you're talking on here with some frequency. I just got through writing two stories so I'm going to quit now, but good job Buz and good job fernandomike. Ya'll is da bomb.

I'm pretty sure Jones ended any ideas about TE with that 40 time. I hate Mel K. too, but he knows a lot of stuff about the draft b/c that's his entire life. However, he's dead wrong about Jones. Just as he was with Ahmad Carrol last year (projected him in the 4th....was the 22nd pick of the draft) and Shawn Andrews, who he said would be a late 1st or early 2nd and he ended up going 15th, i think. Maybe he just has something against Arkies :). I don't care what he says. MJ will go in the 1st. Oh, and Stoener was a great QB, but he's simply not athetically gifted enough to play in the NFL. He's too small. He should be the MVP of the Arena football league though, so that's pretty good. MJ is gifted, but I don't think he'll play QB, in fact I know he won't. Nor should he. I've said this before, but you asked god to give you a bad-ass NFL WR, he'd give you Matt Jones.

Height: 6-6¼
Weight: 242
40 time (hand-timed): 4.37 and 4.39
40 time (electronic): 4.40
Vertical jump: 39.5 inches
Standing broad jump: 10 feet, 9 inches

Strangely enough this same quote was in that article:
"How do you ignore him? He's the best athlete in the draft. It may not even be close. Honestly, he's the most mesmerizing player I've ever evaluated.”

Anyone going to the open scrimmage saturday? I'm not, but would love to hear from someone who does. I'm particularly interested in how Peyton Hillis looks at this point.

Hope that Hillis performs well also. The pink jersey thing is just too funny. Whatever it takes to make them better.

I think the pink jersey is a good idea, I wish Lou would of had something like that, he had a ton of loafs.

Yeah, the pink jersey thing is hilarious. You wanna lolly-gag, you're gonna look like a pu$$*y all day. Herring is a hard ass. I like that in a DC. No matter what happens, our D will be vastly, vastly improved. He'll kill them if they don't.

Yesterday Nutt complemented Hillis as running hard and "being a load" to take down. He and Dickerson will get a lot of snaps with Howard being injured for the spring.
