Duke, West Virginia, Maryland Lead Best of the Worst
NEW YORK, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Just in time for the NCAA final four,
GQ magazine names the top ten most obnoxious college sports fans.
Duke: The Cameron Crazies are the Clay Aikens of college sports fans-too
loud, too geeky, too cute, and terminally annoying. It'll take twenty
consecutive losing seasons just to make them tolerable again.
West Virginia: The Mountaineers might be the college-sports version of
soccer hooligans. Nothing says school spirit like lighting 1,129
intentional street fires (according to Morgantown Fire Department data
from 1997-2003) or hurling a whiskey bottle, golf balls, and a trash can
from the stands.
Maryland: They don't say "Fear the Turtle" for nothing: Terp outrage
caused over $500,000 worth of damage on a single night in 2001, and the
frequent vulgar outbursts at home games have prompted university
officials to seek the state attorney general's advice on how to control
UM fans.
Ohio State: OSU hell-raising after the 2002 Michigan football game-which
involved more than one hundred fires, including a nine-car victory
pyre-cost the city of Columbus over $135,000 in police overtime.
Harvard: With their tweed jackets and sickening chants of "safety
school," the Crimson faithful are the epitome of Ivy League smugness.
Washington State: Cougars fans are still talking about that time after
the 2002 Apple Cup when rival University of Washington athletic director
Barbara Hedges told people, "I feared for my life." Of course, we'd like
to see what those fans would do if someone threw beer bottles at them.
Minnesota: In 2002 & 2003, Minnesota fans waged two full-blown riots,
setting fire to a TV-news van and causing around $200,000 in total
damage, all after winning the ... NCAA hockey championships? We don't
want to think about what they'd do if they won a title that mattered.
Florida State: They started the tomahawk chop. Let us repeat that: They started the tomahawk chop.
Vanderbilt: Vandy actually makes this list for student-fan apathy.
Despite being smack in the middle of arguably the nation's best football
conference, student fans have grown increasingly scarce as the team's
fortunes have tanked. Home attendance at Vanderbilt Stadium is so anemic that after a 2003 Vandy victory over Kentucky, it took fans a pathetic ten minutes to tear down the goalposts.
Colorado: Few college fans take more joy in rioting than the Buffaloes of
Boulder, whose lust for postgame rampaging led local officials to
institute a "sofa ordinance" in 2002 to curb the burning of furniture
during sports-related celebrations.

There was a picture in the Birmingham News of members of Vandy's band carrying the goal post out of the stadium after that Kentucky game. It was pretty funny. :D

Trying to talk rationally to a Clemson fan is like trying to communicate with Hellen Keller.

The Clemson fans I know will probably be proud of their inclusion in that list, disturbingly enough. Anything negative stated about CU is a product of 'jealousy' because they 'rule so hard.'

my best friend goes to Clemson and he is so oblivious to how obnoxious all of the fans are...They are seriously the worst fans in the world...I've heard that not only from USC fans of course, but I heard it from some Penn State fans...

When I was 12 years old a drunken, mulleted, three-toothed UGA fan got in my face at a UGA v. USC f-ball game and I've always thought UGA fans were the worst since then.
uscballer101
03-24-2005, 06:02 PM
oh UGA fans are #2 on my list...Full of themselves...They are the Clemson of the SEC, except good...

The fans of UGA pissed me off, because when I lived in Georgia, a lot of them always said how much they loved them, but when I started talking about the team, they didn't know anything about them. Those are the types of fans that bother me. I say you are all or nothin.
uscballer101
03-24-2005, 06:13 PM
yep, I fully agree...I especially hate the "sometimes" fan...You should take the bad with the good...USC fans are usually good about it (sold out every game 0-11 season) but we have a few...Even a few on the board...But yeah I know more about Clemson than some of their "fans"...

At games played at Billy Brice I've always thought that UT fans were the nicest. I think it's because they own us though. As one nice 72 year old UT fan told me at last year's game; "Son, we don't worry about ya'll too much".
uscballer101
03-24-2005, 06:30 PM
haha, yeah UT fans dont bother me...Uk dont...Vandy dont...UF fans alittle but thats cause they own us as well...I dont really have a problem with any other fans other than UGA...

The worst experiences I've had with opposing fans was always UGA. It's amazing how many of them want to start or do start fights. However, after LSU came here two years ago, I was amazed that they were far worse then UGA.

You are right about where the grove is and if you visit Starkville, be careful. Many a concussion have come from a cow bell.

LSU fans are the worst, in my opinion. Though it pains me to say it, Ole Miss students can be pretty rough too (I say students, because the majority of 'grown' folks who are Ole Miss fans are great).

LSU fans are exuberant and fun loving and celebratory because they usually have a lot to be cheering about. Ole Miss fans are pretty nice considering what they've got to be happy about. There is that occasional drunk Cajun who wants to "whip" the whole state of Mississippi on game night and then there is that suave dressed-to-the-hilt Ole Miss Greek-type who has "hotty toddied" a little too much and chooses to challenge the robust, alligator-wrestling Cajun; and that, of course, is a disaster. Otherwise, fans on both sides are pretty well behaved.

I don't doubt that for a second, Neo. In fact, I'm much more surprised to meet a decent LSU fan these days than I am to meet an a-hole. Take GeauxTo, for instance, he's been nothing but kind thus far. A pleasant surprise, for sure.

Yeah UT fans are extremely nice, It's because most of them are 70, retired and don't have a care in the world. And also because UT wins all the time. But everytime I go to Neyland I am treated very nice, and usually invited to tailgate with the UT fans.

Why? i guess an analogy would explain this best. The feeling a guy just released from prison with a 3/10 deal 3 years served and 10 on paper- he has to be careful if he sneezes for the next 10 years or he'll be back in prison!

Speak your mind, say what you've gotta say, but don't be disrespectful. The admins around here are reasonable. I don't think they're gonna toss you, as long as you maintain some respect.
