Pearce, Hochevar Receive Baseball Weekly Honors
02/28/2005
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Steve Pearce • South Carolina
Senior • 3B • Lakeland, Fla.
In his first three games played this season, Pearce batted a team-best .615 on the weekend as the Gamecocks swept Niagara ... The senior third baseman hit three home runs, including grand slams on back-to-back-days vs. the Purple Eagles.
Pearce had a grand slam in Saturday's 19-1 win, one of his two home runs on the afternoon and hit game-winning slam on Sunday vs. Niagara to break a 2-2 tie in Carolina's 6-2 victory ... Saturday's 5-for-5 performance was the second time that Pearce had five hits in one game.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Luke Hochevar • Tennessee
Junior • RHP • Fowler, Colo.
Tennessee ace Luke Hochevar was close to untouchable while leading the Volunteers to a 1-0 victory at UNC Wilmington Saturday. The preseason All-America selection threw a four-hit complete-game shutout against the team that knocked the Vols out of last season’s NCAA tournament.
The game marked Hochevar’s 12th career win at UT and was his fourth complete game. In addition to striking out six batters and issuing no walks, he also chipped in with a putout and two assists. Hochevar’s control and stamina were never in question during the outing, as he was still being clocked at 90-92 in the ninth inning.
