Stockstill turns down UNC

A day after helping South Carolina land a top-20 recruiting class, Gamecocks recruiting coordinator Rick Stockstill was contacted Thursday by North Carolina coach John Bunting about becoming the Tar Heels’ receivers coach.

But Stockstill is staying put.

"After thinking about it, I’m not going to pursue it," Stockstill said Saturday, "because I’m excited about working with coach (Steve) Spurrier and excited about this recruiting class that we just signed."

Stockstill, 45, in the second year of a three-year contract worth $150,000 annually, will coach the tight ends this season after working with the receivers in 2004. Under Stockstill’s guidance, junior Troy Williamson led the SEC with 75.9 receiving yards a game and seven receiving touchdowns before leaving school early to enter the NFL draft.

Regarded as one of the top recruiters in the Southeast, Stockstill spent 14 years at Clemson before going to East Carolina in 2003 as the offensive coordinator under John Thompson, now one of the Gamecocks’ co-defensive coordinators. Stockstill joined USC’s staff before the 2004 season and was one of three Lou Holtz assistants retained by Spurrier.

After signing a 28-player class ranked No. 19 nationally by Scout.com and No. 22 by Rivals.com, Spurrier praised Stockstill for his recruiting work while Spurrier put the rest of his staff in place.

Stockstill said his family — wife, Sara; daughter, Emily; and son, Brent — "loves Columbia," where they have a house in the northeast part of town.

Thank God. We will need him in the years to come to help us get the best talent in SC to come to USC. Plus he played a big role in developing Williamson into the receiver he became once Stockstill was the receivers coach. He will coach TE's next year and has some good talent to work with in Hannah and McKeen. Cant wait to see what he does with them.

I think it's rather funny that Stockstill had a lot to do with Hannah shunning VT and UNC by coming to USC. Then Bunting decides to offer him a job! LOL!

LOL. Yeah, Stockstill is one of those coaches you want to hire BEFORE recruiting ends. I dont know what Bunting is doing. He will probably be on the hot seat again next year so he is just trying everything I guess.

I dont like Amato. He coached under a Bowden and it shows. He teaches his players to be overly aggresive and they trash talk a lot. Thats why there are usually very high on the penalties. From what I can tell he doesnt care at all about sportsmanship. Rivers made him look better than he was, but I must say he has some great defenses. I think he will be on the hot seat by the end of the year too. With NC State getting left behind in basketball the only thing the people around here can look forward to is football season. If he doesnt go to a bowl next year there will be a lot of fans complaining. Plus he looks like a damn clown walking the sidelines in all red shoes.LOL.

LOL! That's true.

If I had to choose though, I would choose Amato. I can't stand Bunting. It's like battery acid in my mouth. :mad:

LOL. Damn, thats hardcore. I just moved up here last year and thought the Wolfpack would be an ok team to pull for. Im always 100% Gamecock but like to watch as many college football games during the season as possible. After seeing how Amato is I decided I would never pull for them while he is the coach. I dont know too much about Bunting other than he was on the hot seat last year. After UNC beat Miami that gave them a few points in my book. I guess out of all the NC teams UNC is the one I like the most. That isnt really saying much though.

Aggggggh! ((VOMITING))

I would rather gargle dirty water from an airport toliet than cheer for UNC. UNC TarHOLE fans are soooo dang full of themselves it's sickening. All I hear here in Monroe is how UNC is going to win the ACC this year in football. :mad:

UNC = Homer

They give a new meaning to the word homers.
