USC Lands Technical Knock-Out Of Georgia
By: Charles Bennett

ATHENS, GA.--South Carolina and Georgia slugged it out Saturday in a basketball game that should have been played in rounds rather than halves.

In the end, it was the Gamecocks who were left standing, albeit on wobbly feet, after a 60-53 Southeastern Conference victory over the Bulldogs at Stegeman Coliseum.

"I got hit twice," said South Carolina forward Carlos Powell. "Two times in the same eye."

Powell stood his ground, as did the Gamecocks (13-7, 5-4), who won on the road for the first time this season.

It was a big victory for South Carolina, but it would have been an even bigger game to lose against a Georgia team that is 7-12 overall, 1-8 in Southeastern Conference play and ranked 193 in the Ratings Percentage Index.

"You've got more to lose than you've got to win to be honest about it," said South Carolina coach Dave Odom. "That game helped us, but it could have been devastating had we lost the basketball game."

Odom acknowledged the physical nature of the game, but said the Gamecocks gave as well as they received.

"There was a lot of body contact, a lot of physical contact from the outset," Odom said. "I will tell you that I am probably as much at fault as anybody. I had our team on edge a little bit because I knew it was going to be a physical game. I kept warning our team that you have to prepare for the physicality of the game. Maybe I had our guys on edge too much, I don't know."

Edgiest of all was Powell, who caught a blow to the left eye from Georgia's Corey Gibbs with 5:28 to play in the first half.

Powell spent the remainder of the half on the bench holding an ice pack to his swollen face.

"I didn't really know what happened," said Powell. "I got hit in the eye. I went black and hit the ground. It hurt, for real. They play really aggressive. They're trying to find a way to win the game."

Powell came back in the second half to score 12 of his team-high 16 points, including eight points in a span of 1:32 that put the Gamecocks ahead 54-43 with 4:04 to play and left the Bulldogs with too much to do in too little time.

"I was highly upset," said Powell, who took another blow to the same eye in the second half but played on. "I was ready to play. As long as I ain't dead, I'm going to play basketball."

Georgia coach Dennis Felton bristled at suggestions that the Bulldogs play dirty basketball.

"We don't play rough," Felton said. "We don't play dirty. If anything, we need to be tougher. We don't have the size and strength to be able to play rough with anybody."

The rough style of play didn't seem to slow the Gamecocks in the second half. South Carolina shot 68.4 percent from the field and for the game held Georgia to 30.6 percent.

"I can't believe they went 13 of 19 in the second half," said Felton. "I can't believe they were that efficient. We made them work hard. They had some long possessions."

Georgia also had some long possessions thanks to three technical fouls whistled against the Gamecocks in a span of 2:10 in the second half.

The first was called on Powell, the second on Odom and the third on guard Rocky Trice.

Odom said the technicals on Powell and Trice were called for taunting Georgia players. Odom's technical was assessed because he slammed his chair to the court during a timeout.

"I did throw the chair, but as I told all three officials, I was not throwing it anything the officials had done," Odom said.

"I was upset at our team that they had lost their composure. One of the officials said, 'I can't read you mind.' I said to him, 'Don't try.' "

The following is a post I found that details what happened:

The Post & Courrier reported about the two fists that Carlos Powell took to his left eye, the first in the first half that sidelined him for the remainder of the half with an ice pack on his face. The second ... another ugly and unsportsmanlike fist to the same eye. Big Carlos played on and beat them in spite of the attacks, and in spite of the home cooked officiating that ignored the blatant fouls and actually called three technicals on USC when Coach Odom asked for them to do something about the inexcusable behavior of the UGA players.

Said Carlos "As long as I'm breathing I'm playing basketball"

There is no doubt in my mind which school in the SEC is the most corrupt and unsportsmanlike. That school is UGA.

Said Felton "We don't play dirty"

Oh yeah coach? ... we hear you. And you don't cheat in NCAA basketball or make payments to Memphis High School Football coaches or pay uncles of kids of like Robert Geathers to sign at your school either.

Respectfully Submitted,

Davy

As for myself, I caught the highlights and the so-called "fouls" were blatant as hell. Its probably just like me walking up to you and decking you in the face.

DJ,

Did you watch the game? Did you catch the highlights? That is NOT how the game is played. It was just shy of a boxing match for crying out loud. Elbowing a guy to the face after he scored on you was a CHEAP SHOT at best. There's no room for that kinda garbage. Watch the highlights then tell me that kinda crap belongs in basketball.
