Perrilloux among big names to visit LSU

The past two days could have been lucrative ones for East St. John High School football coach Larry Dauterive had he been able to deliver on his end of the deal.
Ardent fans peppered Dauterive with the following:
Just where will his star quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, regarded as the nation's No. 1 prep recruit, wind up Wednesday on national signing day?
Will Perrilloux honor his current commitment to Texas or switch his pledge to either LSU or Mississippi State?
"I wish I had $20 for everyone that asked me that," Dauterive said Thursday after attending the Louisiana High School Athletic Association's annual convention in Baton Rouge. "If so, I could retire after the last two days. I really don't know. All I know is that he committed to Texas. I think he's got three great choices."
The recruiting trail for Perrilloux will come to a final stop this weekend when the 6-foot-2, 210-pound prospect comes to LSU for his third and final official visit. He made an official trip to Texas in December and Mississippi State a week ago.
The arrival of Perrilloux on the campus of LSU gives new coach Les Miles his biggest recruiting weekend since taking over the program Jan. 3.
Perrilloux is one of six prospects scheduled to make their final visits. He's expected to be joined by tight end Martellus Bennett (6-7, 240) of Alief, Texas -- the nation's top-rated tight end -- defensive tackle Jerrell Powe (6-3, 350) of Waynesboro, Miss. -- the nation's third-ranked lineman and one of LSU's nine commitments.
The Tigers are also expected to host Ricky Jean-Francois (6-3, 240) of Miami-Carol City -- the nation's third-ranked defensive end -- and running back Trindon Holliday (5-6, 165) of Northeast High.
"My visit to Southern went well last week," said Holliday, who has also visited Southern Mississippi. "I'm just hoping to have a good time at LSU."
Southern is also hopeful of capitalizing on its final weekend of visitors with 15 prospects expected, including Capitol High offensive lineman Gerron Spears.
The Jaguars added one commitment and three transfers to their 2005 recruiting list Thursday, adding a pledge from Belaire linebacker Johnathan Malveaux (5-11, 198) and a trio of Division I transfers who are currently enrolled for the spring semester.
Malveaux, a member of The Advocate's All-Metro team with 122 tackles as a senior, selected Southern after drawing interest from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, UL-Monroe and Southeastern Louisiana.
"They have a great program, and I can stay right at home, so my parents get to come out and see me," Malveaux, who is academically qualified.
Southern coach Pete Richardson confirmed three transfers: West Virginia defensive end Joe Sykes, Tulane defensive end Julian Lowe and linebacker Travis Berry, a former Colorado signee.
Sykes (6-foot-4, 245 pounds), who will be a senior, played in nine games last season, totaling four tackles, including one sack. He left the team before the Moutaineers' Gator Bowl appearance. Sykes, from Grenada, Miss., played his first two seasons at Holmes (Miss.) Community College.
Lowe (6-2, 252) was an all-state selection as a senior in 2003 at St. Helena Central, where he totaled 41 sacks as a three-year starter. Lowe redshirted last season and will have four years remaining.
"I just saw an opportunity I had to take," said Lowe, who said his father, Nathaniel, played defensive end/offensive tackle at Southern.
Berry (6-0, 225) was a member of The Advocate's Second Dozen, but after spending one day in the 2003 preseason camp at CU, Berry left that program. He was a Class 4A first-team All-State selection in 2001 and 2002 at O. Perry Walker in New Orleans.
The recruiting rigors, along with the often unrelenting schedule of being the nation's top recruit, apparently caught up with Perrilloux who battled flu-like symptoms Thursday after a day-long trip to Atlanta a day earlier where he took part in a televised recruiting show.
"I would have to think he's getting pretty tired," Dauterive said. "A lot of it's getting redundant. Hopefully he'll let someone know something after Sunday. I'll have to honor whatever he does, but all three schools are holding scholarships for him."
Dauterive said Perrilloux is scheduled to play in a key district basketball game tonight at Thibodaux, then drive to Baton Rouge with his older brother where he will join his mother for the highly anticipated weekend visit.
"There's no question he's the top recruit in America," Dauterive said. "All I know is that he's never told me he's not going to Texas. But he's also never told me that he's going to LSU."
