Question: I've been a fervent GameCock fan for about the last four years and my Brother-in-law is an Alum and he couldn't answer this question. What is the nick name for the WB? I mean Florida has "The Swamp", SC A&T has "Death Valley". What is the fan name for WB? And if there isn't one then why hasn't the school taken initiative to instill some kind of tradition by doing so? And again if they don't may I recommend "The Cockpit", unless it's already taken.

I don't think that there is a nickname for WB, but I would be in favor of the "Cockpit." :D

I wasn't insinuating that the name should be changed. I just feel that from what I have seen this is part of the "Culture Change" that Coach Holtz talked about. Just something to build tradition and give USC a little more of a "football" identity. I hope I haven't touched on any nerves or alienated anyone. Thank you for the information you all have supplied.

What about the roost, I like the Crow's Nest too since it is the highest point on a ship and WB is the high point "speaking figuratively" of Columbia but that takes to much explaining to work. I also would like to rename Memorial Stadium from Death Valley to The Barn, or The Bumpkin Patch.

Everytime there is a televised game, the announcers use the term "cockpit", so I think that is our unofficial nickname. But Ive never heard a fan use it.

I have supported Gamecock Football for many, many years. I have also seen the many structual additions that have enhanced WB Stadium. Informally, with the first multilevel addition, the stadium affectionately became known as the "Cockpit". Regardless of the chosen nickname, it is certainly better to play within a cockpit than a cess pool (a.k.a.--Cowtown)

My Georgia "friends" tell me that the devil has moved to South Carolina to coach our beloved Gamecocks. While broadcasting "Welcome to Hell" may be a little strong for our Southern Baptist friends, how about "Welcome to Spurgatory!"

The dorms that back up to Sarge Frye Field were built as athletic dorms and originally called The Roost. Don't know if that is still the official name.

A spin from Spurrier and The Gamecock.

I have to ask, why do ya'll manage to make the coach bigger than the program. It was funny to see it happen when Holtz arrived in Columbia, I'd of thought ya'll would have noticed how degrading to the program it looks by now.

.....But since you're all bent on it, why don't you just just change the mascot all-together. You can be the Fighting Spurrier's !!! :p

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaater, 1 fifth of Haterade and you'll be hatin all day. Just think of it this way, when spurrier is gone may be saying "you remember how good the ole' ball coach was" and "if we only had the ole' ball coach back." That would be making the coach bigger than the program, wait hasn't some other school been doing that about a cheater for 20 years... can't seem to recall the name of it, can anyone help me out here.

Huh ??? Well, he might have me, Delo.   Unfortunately, I don't understand any language outside of English and a bit of Italian. Therefore, I'm unaware if I've been "had" or not.. ;)

If he's alluding that Clemson fans place Danny Ford in higher regard than the overall program itself, he's inarguably wrong. We have traditional icons we point to which predate Ford by a looooooong shot. Any head football coach here is expected to meet or exceed the standard, or be replaced by another who can. Urban Meyer could take over the head job at Clemson and he'd promptly feel the pressure to measure up with wins or be run out of town with his fanny on fire.

The same standard does not apply at South Carolina, however. Remember the way all of Columbia used to harmonize in a chorus of Lou Holtz hymns ??? Notice now all the USC sports attire on the market which make Steve Spurrier the focal point, "Got Spurrier ?" Not the Gamecocks, mind you but the man. Spurrier will never be run out of Columbia, no matter how he fares on the field. Neither would have Lou Holtz, for that matter. Each of them eclipse the program itself and only because the fans make an overt effort to place them at the front of the stage to overshadow the team itself.

I recall in 2000, how most every USC fan I encountered on the internet made a point to recognize the hundred years of futility, thereby absolving Lou Holtz of any responsibility for the '99 campaign. "Of course he couldn't be expected to win immediately, we have a century of losing behind us". Don't even try to deny that was not the rhetoric echoing from Columbia back then. No other fans in America would ever think of lamenting their own history for the sake of defending the honor of the legend they hired, but South Carolina sure did. :(

Now Steve Spurrier has yet to preside over the first practice at USC, yet you've all bowed down to worship him already and given him the keys to the city as well. Consider the very topic of this thread. As I said earlier, why don't you just change your mascot all together. Maybe you could make a rule that every male child born in Gamecock families must be named "Steve". ;) ;) ;)

Of course there aren't any "Got Ford" sports attire, that isn't relevant to the situation at this point in time. One could assume that if there were every hillbilly in the upstate would be donning it. It seems as though you are trying to point us out for doing the same things that Klem-Tech has done for decades. I will admit to be refreshed and having a new zeal for Carolina football, every Gamecock in the state should. Personally I don't think that Lou should even be placed in a situation of being run out of his job, even for the sake of arguement. Lou set out to change the culture down in Columbia and that is exactly what he accomplished. When he decided to take the job we transitioned from hoping to play a good game to expecting to win. As far as the arguement of a coach eclipsing the program I ask you this. Who exactly has Clemson had in recent years that was as highly touted and brought such national attention as either Lou or Steve. You got a legend's son that has done a mediocre job at best, who came into the program with one objective lead the tigers back to the promised land. So far he hasn't lead you back to the promised land, he hasn't even lead you to a place of prominece in the ACC that was until this year grossly inferior to the SEC. Lou may not have led us to the national championship like he had planned but I believe the other SEC teams' fans will concur that we began to be looked at as a serious threat. I challenge you to look deep inside in your heart and tell us that if Clemson had hired someone of the magnitude of Spurrier that you would not be in the same state of excitement, I have already thought about the what ifs and know that as a rival I would be a little bit on edge if we were facing one of his teams.

I think we as an institution we quit referring to ourselves as "The Cocks" think it had something to do wit the newly hired Volleyball Coach Kim Hudson. Now that she is gone... "The Cockpit"
