This one should be a great game. MSU should bring their best game after suffering the worst loss in 12 years for their basketball team. If it was in Columbia I would say we have a good chance to win it. We still have a chance, but its gonna take some good playing to win this one.

We might play them close but i havent seen them close out an quality opponent all year.
We will lose, another "moral" victory, but baseball season starts soon and then the spring game.....

I have to agree with RW here. They have played top opponents tough, but don't quite pull it out at the end.

They are big inside and we have not done well against teams with big post players. Sure, we beat UT, but if that game had been played in Knoxville they would probably have whipped us like LSU. If we can stop their inside game (we may have to play zone) then we have a good chance. However, playing zone takes away from our running game and we all know half-court offense is our weakness.

Ok, I am consulting the SEC talk people on this one cause I know someone will know...
I am watching the basketball game and I just want to find out...does anyone know why Balkman keeps getting BOOED by the MSU fans every time he touches the basketball?? Just wondering...it is bugging me.

Balkman seems to get booed at every opponent's court! He made quite an impact last year in the SEC with a great year - but won no friends with his flashy, high flying style of play (the man has some hops) and this style of play and his hair draws attention. I think I remember a big incident at Vandy that involved him as well. Sort of got a reputation.
Just some thoughts! Other than that - I don't know.

We are getting our heads handed to us right now by MSU's inside game - just like I thought we would. We better get hot from 3 pt. land real quick or we will get blown out in this game. The MSU fans are really into it.

This just in.
We suck.
God almighty. We have no options offensively. We have nothing under the boards.
MSU loses Roberts, and it gives us no advantage whatsoever. I knew it wouldn't.....we have nothing inside to take advantage of it. Once again, we sit by and watch another SEC football or basketball team celebrate, while we sit there with blank looks on our faces.
It's called RECRUITING, Dave. You can't win in this league with "projects" and mediocre talent. One of these days.....one day, in a faraway future....we gonna bring in a coach that finally understands that.

So can I take this as a good sign for the USC/Bama game in a few weeks? :p j/k
I enjoyed our performance against MSU the other night, but hope our guys don't let it sink into their heads too much when going up against teams that have lost to MSU. Wish I was still in T'town for the coming home games on our schedule.

Mouth-running during pre-game. Rick's Rowdies (T-shirt kids) single someone out all the time. The hard (but clean) foul against Roberts exacerbated it. Good game, though. You guys are this close...

I'm glad I don't watch Basketball. These games would have already killed me or I would have killed myself. :(

Jordan,
Go ahead and chalk up the Bama vs. USC game as a win for you guys. Ain't no way.....not if we played you 100 times.....we would ever beat you. Certainly not in Tuscaloosa.....
We have no talent whatsoever. We get by on guts and playing hard.....but that's not enough in conference play. Dave Odom can't recruit worth a crap, and it's showing at this point in the year.

Ya know Gal, I've been pretty supportive of Odom up until this point, but now I'm even having doubts. The true "mark" of success for a program is being able to "close the deal" and that's something that USC has lacked all year. :(

Bad program. But Gal, I do see some talent. Not All American Calibur by any means but we do have a few good players. Tre Kelley is still a soph, he will continue to progress in his final 2 seasons. Powell Is decent. Whats up with Josh Gonner? What a waste of a scholi. He belongs in D-2!!!! I swear, have you ever watched Chapell playing? Its like he just runs in circles anywhere BUT where the ball is....funny stuff. Anyways, we have a little talent, but I am with you about the coaching situation. Any chance we could get Cremins??????

I agree that it will be a win this year... but keep in mind that our basketball program has not always been that great either. Just in very recent years have we done well. Heck, I think our trip to the Elite Eight last year was the highest tier we've ever gotten too in the NCAA tourney.

Les,
What we have are a bunch role players. These guys would be fine if they had some superstar type of teammates to work with. In that sense, you could say they are "talented" in that they know their roles. But they don't have the "superstar" talent to work with.
Kelley, for example, would be an awesome point guard if he had a great 2-guard to work with and had a legit big man to feed the ball to in the post.
DeLorean,
Odom is a fine human being and a good X and O man. But he just can't recruit. And the guys coming in next year are more of the same. You can't get by in this league recruiting "projects" and hope you develop another Tim Duncan. Duncan was a rare case....and quite honestly.....a little lucky for Dave to have found him.
Also.....recruiting in basketball at SC is much more of a challenge than at Wake. I'm not sure Odom realized this when he took the job....
Reminds me of Bill Foster who was always trying to recruit the next Mike Giminski, and all we ended up with was a bunch of BDWGs.

Ahhh, I see. Thank you for some insight on that! Too bad we didn't play well AT ALL during this game...*sigh* until the next game...

Seems a little selfish...can't recruit? We're not just talking about Duncan. Stephon Marbury. Didn't Chris Childs come from there under his watch? Not sure

No.....Marbury played at Georgia Tech. Childs didn't play for Odom, either. You're probably thinking of Randolph Childress........Also, Odom coached Rodney Rogers, who played in the NBA.
However, I'm not speaking of Wake Forest. This isn't the ACC. Recruiting at South Carolina is an entirely different challenge. And so far, Odom hasn't been up for it. I honestly believe he thought it would be EASIER to recruit here, and he's found out the opposite.
The closest thing to a top 100 player he's landed has been Renaldo Balkman.
Some will argue that others were as well, but it ain't so.....at least if Tom Lemming's rankings mean anything to you. Wallace, Kelley, Powell and others are decent players.....but they alone are simply not enough.
Besides....the record book speaks for itself. After this year, Odom will have gotten us to the NCAAs once in 4 years, with nary a NCAA tournament win. The primary reason has been a lack of talent, no matter what anyone says. If the past few games haven't convinced anyone of that, nothing ever will.

There's not a word in that post that I can disagree with. Good analysis Gal.
