Top 5 games in deciding who goes to Atlanta next year?
My Take:
1. Tenn@Florida
Early in the Season, winner in the drivers seat, loser has very little room for error left.
2. Bama-LSU
I think this one will decide the West IMO.
3. USC-UGA
Kind of like UT-UF for the east, If Spurrier is going to make some early noise, this is a must early win for him. Further, if UGA gets past USC, they leave that landmine for someone else, and are pretty much tied with the UT/UF winner.
4. Auburn-Alabama
What good is any top 5 list of games in the SEC without this one. I really don't think Auburn takes the West next year, but they certainly could take Bama out of it.
5. Tennessee@Bama
Phil Fulmer and his Volunteers travel to a very welcoming a friendly Tuscaloosa for some good times with his greatest admirers, the Alabama Crimson Tide. In all seriousness, this game could very well be a preview of the SECCG. Winning in Tuscaloosa is not easy at anytime, but doing it under the new rivalry conditions will be very tough. This is going to be one of the best games of the year in the SEC, no doubt in my mind.
Others to watch:
UGA@UT
USC@UT (Spurriers first trip back to Neyland)
Auburn-LSU
Not too sure about Arkansas, doubt theyll compete w/ LSU and BAMA next year, but Houston Nutt always likes to spoil someone's party.
Predicted SECCG- UT vs. BAMA
Thats mine, what do you guys think.
Overall....not bad.
As for excitement and media coverage, I would drop the LSU/Bama game and pick-up the USC/Florida game. Spurrier vs. Alumni????? WOW!

Wow, how did I let that slip my mind? At the very least, that game will certainly have a TON of hype, almost certainly will be an ESPN night game as well. LSU/Bama I still think is crucial next year, simply because I think the West will come down to that game, the winner practically takes a two game lead, and I really think the West is between LSU and Bama. But you are right, if Spurrier beats UF next year, that would be HUGE for you Gamecocks. Is that game in Columbia?

Yes....
We have Florida and Arkansas at Columbia.
We are on the road with UT and UGA.
I see USC going 8-3 next year with an upset of either Florida or Tennessee. People wonder if Mr. Spurrier would run up the score if he could. I think so. The only team I don't see him even trying that against is Florida.

I don't think SC has ever been intimidated by Samford or Neyland. Last time you guys were in K-ville, that was one of the best games I have seen in person. UGA-USC seems to always be close wherever its at, so you never know. This may very well be the craziest comment on this board, but Im also looking for Kentucky to bite somebody next year. They have some pretty good young talent, no heisman winners by any stretch, but I would not at all be surprised if UK took out one of the Big 3 in the east next year.

This IS Steve Spurrier, his first season and wanting to make a statement? He would lay 100 on somebody if he could.
I'm not hating on Bama. I just don't see them going to the SECCG this year. Bama is a talented team no doubt about it, but with LSU remaining practically intact, Bama is going to be hard pressed to pull it out. Depth is still a problem at Alabama. I say maybe best case, 2006 they can make a run at the SECCG.
Probation always bites ya in the butt when you don't want it to.

That would certainly be the conventional wisdom, but they certainly held up well against UT and AU this year, with a very very banged up team. IF, and thats a huge IF, they can stay healthy, and open up their offense with a little bit of passing, I think they have a decent shot. We will certainly see, but I was very impressed with their team when they came to K-ville this past year. Played us well, and this was before Ainge got hurt.
Here's mine....
USC/Florida: A duel of the fates.
UGA/Tennessee: Revenge?
LSU/Auburn: Vindication? The "Zebras" made a bad call last time.
Auburn/Alabama: I think Bama will win this one. Call me crazy?
USC/Tennessee: The classic "showdown" at the OK Corral

They need at least a min of 1-2 full years of recruiting to get back up to stock. The penalties that the NCAA handed down almost completely decimated the Tide program. It was almost the NCAA "Death Penalty".
I say in 06 they will make a run for the SECCG. I don't worry about infractions as long as Shula is there. Everyone may pick on the guy, but he runs an honest and clean program. :)

A completely different list than mine, and still some incredible looking games next year the way all these teams are looking heading into 05. Im almost beginning to believe that if Spurrier and Meyer live up to even moderate expecations, the SEC east may singlehandedly be better than a couple of the major conferences, certainly would be better than the Quack-10 if you took their professional team out of that conference.

I hope you are wrong, because they gave my VOLS fits this past season with a backups all over the field. It will be interesting to see which one of us turns out to be right, one thing is for sure, Shula has done a very good job down there so far considering the circumstances they were in. Not only the probation, but the transition to a new coach, system, etc. Fran really screwed them.

Yeah...he did and Shula had to come in and play clean-up. :) Shula's a good guy. I have always admired his Dad and what his Dad brought to the game. :)

Well, they almost had their win of the decade. I was convinced we were going to lose that game until the very very end. How can that same team play that bad against UK, then put on such a performance at the SECCG? I like to think it was Clausen just getting in his groove, but I think our D was out there expecting South Knox Middle School until halfway through the fourth quarter. Needless to say, UT has had a problem being consistant for the last 4 or 5 years. Hopefully, the ATM drubbing is a sign of bright things to come for us.

Funny thing was, at halftime during that UK-UT game, I checked out a couple of the major UK boards, and it seemed as if 2/3 of them were talking hoops oblivious to the upset that they were about to hatch.

Honestly, I thought Texas A&M was going to win that game and win it big. I think I predicted Texas A&M to win by 20 something. Boy did I bust on that one. I was really impressed though. Given UT's history of choking in the bowl games, they just smacked A&M up and down the field. That may be an advantage going into next year. Personally, the QB job would have to be Claussen's. :)

Hey, don't feel bad about that, Im as big a UT fan as youll find, and deep down I thought we would lose (not by 20), so they even surprised me. I couldn't help but think, WHY couldn't they have done that last year, you would not believe the garbage I have put up with from my family stock full of Tater boosters.

Well, I feel pretty optimistic about this season coming up. The only thing I see hurting us is our schedule, @UF, @LSU back to back early in the season. Then the trip to Bama is going to be tough. But, our D is going to be really stout IMO. On offense, Ainge and Clausen are going to compete for the starting QB slot, Riggs comes back (did you know that Riggs and Houston had jroughly just about the same amount of yards as Caddy and Ronnie Brown this past season?) O-line looks real good, so who knows. Our talent is there, weakness is the secondary, but weve got some recruits coming in that are supposedly studs and will be able to play right away, and seeing what Ko Simpson did for you guys, makes me more comfortable with that idea. The Conference is just going to be brutal next year. All in all, I think we win the division, but well have to play well on the road to do it. 2006, I think well be preseason top 3, and I think that will be for legitimate reasons.

Thanks for the kind words, CarolinaVol. It's always good to hear POSITIVE talk between Bama/Vol fans in recent years.... hopefully all the other BS is finally getting behind most fans. :)
I'm not so sure we can get to the SECCG this year, but it's the first year in awhile that I would at least give us a shot at it. Everything is going to be very dependent upon how well signing day goes for us next month, and also on how quickly we can get some of those guys down here to Tuscaloosa to start training with the rest of the team. Especially on the O-Line, I think we'll be very dependent upon some true freshman players. Our defense will be mostly returning next year, so we should still be pretty good in that area. And once again our starting QB is returning, but I just pray that Shula either A) gets a new, dependable backup QB or B) somehow does some "magic" with Guillon and/or Pennington. While I hope that nothing happens to Croyle for a 3rd year in a row, it's almost become an event you have to be prepared for. :)
We'll have a lot of close games this year, but I think we'll pull out of most of them on top of the score.
My Top 5 Games List:
1) Florida at USC -- Just for "hype" building up to the game :)
2) LSU at Bama -- Can't wait for a chance for this revenge.... in Tuscaloosa this year
3) Bama at Auburn -- I think we'll take back this series, with the loss of many starters at Auburn
4) Florida at LSU -- Matchup of new coaches.... just an interesting one to watch IMO
5) Tennessee at Bama -- Another game of revenge.... again in Tuscaloosa this year
Obviously my list is a little biased, but they're the games that I'm most looking forward to.
Oh.... and SECCG prediction.....
East: Tennessee (or a BIG stretch for SC)
West: LSU (or a BIG stretch for Bama)

And as CarolinaVol pointed out earlier, I remember a certain Vol team (with Ainge) that had trouble hanging in with us in Knoxville this past season.
It's going to be a close one, but I think we'll take it.

I just don't see it that way. On the books/talent, as well as in the minds of pollsters/fans/predictions, UT had the clear advantage for a blowaway game this past season. Add that on top of our injuries and our inexperienced freshmen, and your team should have really blown us out.
While I chose Bama to win that game (out of heart), I deep down expected us to get creamed. So to ME (personally), I think we played pretty darn well.

hell, the way the last season panned out, we are probably not going to be the ESPN night game for USC-Florida. Come on, you know it wil be one of those gay noon Jefferson Pilot games. I dont know why we pull that crap. Id be perfectly content with keeping EVERY game at night, but for some reason they always end up doing something no one thought would happen, or even understands for that matter. I really do think that if what I heard about Bama not losing very much of their D from last year, they will be a force. From the UT-Bama game this past year, that was what most impressed me, because you all did an outstanding job of limiting our running game, which was very potent this year if I might add. Further, your pass D didn't seem to suffer too much in the process of focusing on Houston/Riggs. So naturally, going with the tried and true line "defense wins championships", I like Bama's chances next year. The thing is, the entire conference looks to have the potential to be one of the best collectively in a very long time, making it really tough on us all. But I think if your team can stay healthy, open up the offense a bit, it will be between you all and LSU for the West. Auburn, theyll be tough, but how can you bounce back after losing Campbell, Williams, Brown, and most of that Secondary? Then again, same thing was said about UT in 98 after losing Manning, and several key defensive players, and I think we all saw what happened there.

You know, my take is that it is a shame that a few loud individuals on both sides have done everything they can to destroy what was and still is one of the best rivalries in the country. Ill tell you a quick story. When I was about 10 or 11, my family and I were on a road trip through Kentucky and Ohio to visit family. On the way back home to SC, we stopped in Knoxville at a mall for some reason. Having been sound asleep for a good couple of hours, when we did stop I had no idea as to where we were, nor did I care, to me it was just a mall on the way home. The point is, that it was on the UT-Bama Saturday in Knoxville. Now I had no idea about UT nor Alabama, growing up having Clemson football force fed upon you typically means ignorance of any truly successful football programs. But that day I happened to be wearing a hat I had picked out, which was a Bama hat, purely for the reason it looked good I guess (remember, I was a kid here). I'll never forget walking through the mall in Knoxville, on the day of the UT-Bama game, wearing a Bama hat, oblivious to the situation, until finally after about half the stores had a "go vols, BEAT BAMA" sticker in the window, and then the entire mall had UT penants, etc, hanging, I realized why I had so many people inquire as to whether they could buy me a new hat. Finally, about 20 minutes before I had to meet back up at the prearranged meeting point my parent's had set for me (surely I wasn't roaming a mall with my parents), I stopped in a sporting goods store and was assisted by a very friendly older gentleman who upon finding out that I had no TRUE affiliation to Alabama, gave me a grand ole story about real college football, that revolved around General's and Bears, and one of the greatest rivalries on the planet. I left that mall that day proudly wearing one of the brightest orange hats thanks to this gentleman. Little did I know even then that about 10 miles away one of the greatest annual football games in the history of College football was taking place. About 9 years later, I had decided to leave my state and go to the University of Tennessee, knowing football was a big deal, but being basically clueless as to the degree. On moving day, my Family and I went off to the mall to get a few things I needed to start my freshman year in college, and walking in the front door I suddenly remember, hey, I had been there before. I walked out of that mall with my second very bright orange ball cap, and a recovered memory of the lifeblood of UT football, "BEAT BAMA". I hope that the next oblivious ten year old roaming through a mall in Tuscaloosa and Knoxville gets the same history lesson I did, and embelleshed story of the Bear and The General, or streaks, and of a great rivalry, NOT of scandals and cheating.
This is a very true story, and one of the main reasons Bama-UT is something I can truly appreciate, even though I wasn't around for the 'glory days' of the rivalry.

Many, many SEC games should be classics. Here are five good matchups:
Tennessee @ Florida This will be Urban's first chance to make an impression.
Florida @ South Carolina Urban versus the Ball Coach is already terrific hype.
Tennessee @ LSU The two best in the SEC in their first of two meetings in 2005.
LSU @ Alabama The two best in the west battling for the prize. Bama will have a chance to beat an LSU team which will already have posted wins over Tennessee, Florida, and Auburn. What an opportunity for the Tuscaloosers!

Just a few for now....
UF/UT: Revived Florida team under Meyer takes the East, puts the SEC on notice at UT's expense.
UF/USC: Meyer vs. Spurrier. Should be a great matchup in the future (if SS stays)....but not in Spur's first year.
Auburn/Alabama and LSU: Auburn taking the West, proves last year wasn't a fluke (though they will not go undefeated).

In no particular order and I will bold the five most important games in my mind. Leaving out the rest of the games does not due the SEC justice as there is so many good match-ups to look forward to
UT vs Fla in the swamp
No one can doubt Fulmer and crew if they can take three straight in the swamp. It is going to be a hard game for the Vols to win and it starts the tough part of the Vols schedule. This is Oscar Meyer's first chance to expierence the SEC and the almost insanity that will follow this season
USC vs Fla in Columbia
Does anything need to be said about this one?
Bama vs Fla in T-town
Urban gets his first visit to Bryant-Dennehy(sp) stadium and gets to look at possibly the best defense in the SEC. This match-up brings back memories of the first couple of SECG match-ups.
Bama vs LSU in T-town
This is a revenge game if I have ever seen one. Good luck Tigers, you are going to need it.
Bama vs Auburn in Auburn
It is the Iron Bowl. There is a good chance that this game could determine who goes to the SECG as the West rep. It is the freaking Iron Bowl.
Auburn vs Georgia in Athens
If UT/Fla is the first early matchup that shapes the SECG race, then this is one of the last. Loser of this game is more than likely out of the SECG.
Auburn vs LSU in Baton Rouge
The battle of the last two National Champs(this is for the slighted Tigers)
Georgia vs Fla in the Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party
One game I hope to see in person once in my life. The
Georgia vs Tennessee at Knoxville
The last two teams to represent the SEC East in the Championship Game.
l
LSU vs Tennessee in Baton Rouge
Less Miles first SEC game and it is an East heavyweight.
USC vs. Georgia in Athens
First SEC game for the ole ball coach.
Tennessee vs. USC in Knoxville
Spurrier vs Fulmer is back and should be fun.
The third Saturday in October in Tuscaloosa
All I hope is that nobody needs to go to jail or the hospital. If the intensity of the fans is proportional to the intensity of the game, WOW, just WOW.
No disrespect ment for the Razorbacks, MissSt Bulldogs, Rebels, 'Dores and Wildcats. Coming off last year, it is hard to put any of these teams in the must watch category because of importance for SECG.
Those are pretty good picks! :)
