A lot of people are assuming that with the loss of the big names that the dawgs are in for a rough 2005 season.
UGA will most likely return (* indicates at least one start at UGA):
QB: Shockley, Tereshinski Jr., Blake Barnes
RB: Brown*, Lumpkin*, Ware*, Browning*, Cooper*
FB: Des Williams*, Brandon Southerland
WR: AJ Bryant, Sean Bailey*, Bryan McClendon*, Kenneth Harris, Demiko Goodman, TJ Gartrell
TE: Pope*, Milner*
T:Inman*, Rolan*, Shackelford*
G:Bartley Miller*, Nick Jones*, Max Jean Gilles*, Fernando Velasco*C: Russ Tanner*, Schnetzer*
Defense
DE: Will Thompson*, Quentin Moses, Charles Johnson
DT: Kedric Golston*
N: Gerald Anderson*, Darius Swain*
LB: Verdun*, Tony Taylor* (started two years ago), Derrick White*, Brandon Miller, Josh Johnson, Jarvis Jackson
DB: Greg Blue*, Paul Oliver*, Tra Battle*, Tim Jennings*, Thomas Flowers
UGA also returns the starting K, P, PR, KR, snapper and holder.
Richt has already talked about returning too a two back set with Lumpkin, Brown, and Ware serving as a three way combo of what Auburn was doing this year. DJ will be fine throwing out of play action and misdirection. Out line will be as good as any in the country.
Also, keep in mind that UGA's recruiting class this year is ranked 2nd in the country on scout.com and 7th on rivals.com. Also, rivals rated UGA 3rd in 2002, 6 in 2003, and 6 in 2004.
I like that we are being overlooked. With a much easier schedule, things could be good for the dawgs.

I think Mark Richt is going to surprise everyone next year.
Though they lose Thurman and Davis, defense will still be quite fine.
QB is the only position that is questionable and that is a big question mark.

What about on offence? who will they count on when/if they fall behind to lead them?

georgia to me has no problems on offense, they need to improve their defense...maybe they need to teach them how to tackle. this is based on watching the AU Georgia game btw ;p

Their entire OL and RB core comes back...and most importantly....their All-SEC TE in Pope.
Now, they lose Brown and Gibson but return McClendon, Bailey, and some other talented kids so I don't expect an unbelievable dropoff.
QB with Shockley is the.....worry position. He really can be good and bad at times.

I dont know...I am not getting my hopes up too high for next year...I had them real high for this year and was let down...Shockley at QB makes me a little nervous. I never know what he is going to do back there...I think that the UGA offensive staff will re-work how they draw up plays with Shockley back there instead of Greene. I suspect they will draw most of their plays having Shockley roll out of the pocket instead of a stationary pocket like they had with Greene.
We have two great running backs with Davis and Brown and also have a very experienced offensive line. Those will help Shockley out a lot. I would also assume that the more playing time Shockley has the better he will get. He hasnt gotten much PT the past two years. I am expecting they will go 8-3 or 9-2 with a bowl game win.
But maybe they will be the surprise team like Auburn was this year.
By the way...its good to see another UGA fan on the board here...

They could be an awesome team next year I don't know, but it seems like every year I hear about how they could go all the way. I don't see them having a better year next year than they had this year.

Yeah,we could be like Auburn and shock everyone.I like our offense I think we got 3 great backs, good line, young recievers that may surprise everyone, and a great tight end.My worries are how shockley will do and how the D plays.Watch out for the SEC east this year,4 teams that have a chance at a SEC title.

DJ was an elite 11 QB. He has all of the tools to be great. He took less than 30% of the snaps in practice last year. Think about that. When he's running the show, getting all of the reps, he should be fine.
Quitin Moses had 6 sacks in a back up role this year, I'll take it.
Tackling is the defenses main problem, I hope Van Gorder teaches them a lesson this offseason.

Though anything could happen, with the opener vs. Boise State looking to be a rude way for Shock to begin as the starter, @ UT, the WLOCP, Auburn, and this year the nats make for 5 games that are tossups at this early date.
So many if's surround the '05 Dawgs that it really isn't conducive to make any predictions and that will be the angle of all the pre-season mags take. A Top 25 team on paper, but there is no other ability to do much more until the rubber meets the road in September.
One minor thing I doubt most outsiders will consider is that though they will be largely youthful, the Secondary should prove to be talented & deep enough to play a lot more Dime with a lot less worry as the coverage skills will be vastly improved. When combined with the relentless pressure style VanGorder prefers of his front 7, the ability to man-up by the secondary will cause more difficulty for OC's who like to dinky doo the Dawgs.
On the Offensive side, one could speculate that the embarassment of riches at TB and an intact OL who returns two huge & healthy tackles that missed '04 due to injuries might inspire Richt & Callaway to use the pass as an object of opportunity. Word leaking out is that a new zone blocking scheme will be instituted and that generally means that the will to run the ball is on the agenda.

Speaking as a Vols fan, my favorite words to hear in next year's UGA vs. UT game will be "Shockley drops back to pass".
Georgia has OK running backs, but losing Greene and their two starting WR's means they'll have trouble throwing the ball next year.

South Carolina, the home of the Universe's Most Optomistic Fan Base, will struggle as will FU with their new Coaching Staffs and should improve as the season progresses. This means that an upset of the Dawgs in Game 2 is a bit too much in the way of reasonable expectations to place on your boyz, but go ahead and do it because by August you will anyway. Lol!
All joking aside, SC does always give a supreme effort vs. UGA and though I'm yanking your chains today, I know it will be the usual brass knucks fist fight. Heck, if the Dawg Offense collapses under the weight of an inept DJ and Richt insists on playing him over the very promising Barnes.....the honeymoon will REALLY be over if the Cocks rock the Dawgs at Sanford!
In this Dawgs view, 2005 is one that will be filled with much curiosity & apprehension as to what kind of team UGA will put on the field.

See, here is where I think SOS's impact will be felt the most. I dont think SC will be a team that can reasonably get to Atlanta next year, but I do think they are a team that is gonna take out one of the big 3 schools next year. Considering that UT has to go to the Swamp and LSU early, UGA plays @ Neyland, I think it could very well come down for the East crown which team could safely navigate the Spurrier trap, because it is certainly reasonable to believe that the games will split with UT, UGA ,and UF having schedule difficulties or new coaching to deal with. That being the case, I think the road to Atlanta for UT, UGA, or UF lies in which one doesn't get picked off by SOS.
ON Edit: C. Dawg, seems like you beat me to it

I was just wondering...what will the Carolina fans say if Spurrier doesnt win there...when Lou came all I heard was, "finally we have a coach that can win"...well that didnt exactly prove to be true and now you have one of the greatest college coaches in the game...if you dont win, what will you say then?

Dude...Holtz wasn't exactly a failure. Being able to go bowling 3 out of 6 years isn't bad. Now, did I think Holtz's offense would survive in the SEC? No way! That powerman running game doesn't work anymore. Did I think that Holtz was going to win the SEC? More than likely no. I thought he was a little past his prime when we hired him, but since he was our coach, I stood by him.
To compare Holtz to Spurrier is like comparing a Chevy to a Ferrari. Holtz is not a long term guy. He's a rebuilder and that's what he does best. Spurrier on the other hand is cocky, arrogant and is not afraid to take a chance and go for the juggler. Spurrier hates losing and he will not stand for it. Holtz is a conservative styled coach that plays not to lose. Spurrier plays to win by the biggest margin possible.
What used to bug the hell outta me was Holtz's little "downtalking" about our team. If you keep telling kids they will never beat so and so, pretty soon they are going to believe it. If you treat you players like losers, that's what they will become.
Overall, I am thankful that Mr. Holtz did come here because those last two Top-10 recruiting classes are now Jr's and SR's this year and I wanna see them play like I know they can. Holtz brought respect and recognition back to a program that had lost it. Because of that, we now have Spurrier and I will always be grateful.
They will say it must not be our coaches its our players.
I wouldn't talk DJ. The Ray Goff days aren't that far away in the past.

Buy Players? Prove it! (ps, internet message boards dont count as proof)
Cant Win a MNC? Well, over the last 10 years, UT has one, how many does UGA have?
But yes, you are right, UT generally seems to always be good with a few exceptions here and there (2000, 2002).

Well..I'm just going to play devils advocate here and say that I on this message board predicted back in August that Holtz was going to retire and Spurrier was the leading candidate. Our leader on defense next year will be linebacker Tony Taylor. He is very solid and knows a lot about the game. He was lost for this season in our spring game with a torn ACL. He had a very good 2003 campaign. He will most likely fill in for Odell at mike linebacker. Our will linebacker will be Jarvis Jackson (you USC fans should know him. He played mike LB for Odell in that game and played EXTREMLY well). Our sam linebacker will probably be Brandon Miller. He was a top 10 rated player by rivals as a DE last recruiting season. He had been all over the field on special teams and will be hard to hold off, as FORMER defensice coordinator Brian Van Gorder stated in an interview a few weeks ago.
As far as "replacing" Pollack, I have freat confidence in Quenton Moses who has been discussed earlier in the thread.
Thomas Davis was a great run stopper but a not so great coverage guy. The difference in our 2003 and 2004 defenses is one player by the name of Sean Jones. In our defensive scheme the SS (or rover as we call it) is more of a coverage guy than the FS. Sean Jones was our rover last year and was damn good one due to his quarterback instincts (his position in high school). This year Greg Blue took over as our rover but he is just another run stopper like Davis was. Next year Blue (depending on if he graduates or not and receives his 4th year since he was a partial qualifier) will take over at FS for Thomas Davis. That will leave the rover position open for Tra Battle most likely. However, rising sophomore Kelin Johnson was a monster on special teams making almost every tackle. He is a lot like Sean Jones, a ball hawk who played QB in high school. I am very excited about this kid.
Our offense should be fine as well. If Shockley can take care of the ball I think we will be more than okay. We return our whole OL and could possibly get back 2003 starting guards Josh Brock and Bartley Miller back who missed this season due to chronic shoulder problems. We have 3 very good running backs in Ware, Brown, and Lumpkin. Lumpkin will most likely need more time to recover from his acl tear but Thomas Brown looks very, very good at RB with Ware backing him up. Our running game should take some pressure off of DJ. Our receivers are a huge question mark. Sean Bailey has shown he is very capable and is DJ's favorite wide receiver to throw to. McClendon has been poised for a breakout year but it has not happened yet. Hopefully next year it will. We return our best receiver in big Leonard Pope (our TE by the way). He could very possibly be the best tight end in the country next year.
We need to find a solid kicker too step up. Other than kickoff coverage our special teams were not so special this year.
Sorry to make such a long post, I just got caught up in looking forward to next year.

Yeah our first place kicker was AWFUL, I think his name was Andy Bailey. The kick he missed against Tenne. was a definite heartbreaker. But there were many others he should have made. Place kickers are definitely underrated players. Though they may be kickers, they can win or lose ballgames for your, which can in turn win or lose you National Championships...

I wouldn't say he was awful. He did miss a few kicks here and there that hurt us however. Andy Bailey was his name. He lost his job during the Tech game and was replaced by Brandon Couto, our kick off guy. The job will be open once again this spring and fall.

Do you think Taylor will play in the middle. I was under the impression that Josh Johnson was becoming a man child at Mike. I love Brandon Miller and his future as a bulldawg but I'd love to see Taylor at Will, Johnson at Mike, and Verdun at Sam. Leave Miller backing up the two outside and White backing up Johnson and we would have fresh linebackers at all times. Just my thoughts, you might be right.

With UGA losing two coaches this late in the year it could hurt recruiting and will probably be a set back for the defense next year. Of course anything at this point is no more than just speculation, but then again what else are we to do in the offseason? One thing I think we can all agree on is that next year will be one of the most anticapted seasons in a LONGGG time. Now I know most of us probably say that a lot of years but this one seems different.

Our recruiting is pretty much wrapped up. We will still get Dewberry (has to PG though), Corey Moon. Losing VG could hurt us with Bryan Evans, who would be the icing on our recruiting cake. Outside of that, Duke Robinson is really the only other guy we are waiting on. Definately a top 10 class and will leave us some open schollies for next year.

Everyone keeps talking about Barnes, altough he has shown remarkable improvement and great potential, he is still coming into spring as the #3 guy. I don't think he beats out Joe T. as easily as some people are assuming. Either way, we have a more than capable backup. It's not like we're going to have a Spencer Peterson stepping in or anything.

I have heard that Tony Taylor will be our mike linebacker next year. Josh Johnson moved himself up to #2 on the depth chart before getting into the coach's dog house for missing meetings. He very well may be our mike next year, I'm not sure. I know that Van Gorder stated in an interview by our rival's site that it would be hard to hold off Brandon Miller at sam. He is very fast and can shed blocks very well. Jarvis Jackson started at will in the Outback Bowl over Verdun-Wheeler. He is very fast and played very well filling in for Odell at mike. He can hit as well. I know that the coaches like Derrick White as a backup because he can play all 3 linebacker positions. I don't know what is going on with Verdun-Wheeler. The other linebackers may just be better. I also know that the coaches love redshirt freshmen Danell Ellerbe. They say he is our fastest linebacker. I may not know some things but I know one thing, our depth at linebacker is incredible. We will just see how it all works out. I'm looking forward to next season.

Spencer Pennington from Alabama I know hes horrible.Yeah we do got depth and I really think next year we will be fine we are recruiting great. What do you think our record will be .

Our recruiting will be fine. Van Gorder was not known for his recruiting. We had 5 or 6 coaches visit Bryan Evans after the Outback Bowl and Van Gorder was not one of them. That tells me something. I think if anything the hiring of Willie Martinez will help with Evans since Martinez coaches the secondary.
We are replacing Van Gorder with Willie Martinez, our secondary coach. He knows the defense as well as Van Gorder does. In fact, Van Gorder worked under Martinez at Central Florida. I expect our defense to pick up where they left off. They may even be better next year than they were last year. I guarantee defense will never be a weakness as long as we keep our defensive coaches.
Also, our punt returner, Thomas Flowers, is fine. He holds onto the ball and runs forward that is all I ask. Don't forget, we led the SEC in punt return yardage this season.

Van Gorder leaving is a huge loss for UGA.
I know all about Brian's past with Willie but defensive wise, they are not the same exact scheme-for-scheme coach.
Willie Martinez will be a good one, especially with his background, but I doubt as successful as BVG

Leornard Pope. The kid is a monster. He was our money receiver the 2nd half of this season.

Probably the best thing about UGA's 2005 season is that they don't have to come to Baton Rouge.

Listen pal, I know you have your opinion, but DJ is a class kid and he doesn't need all this negative hype from us. He needs our support. He has never, EVER complained about riding the bench for 4 years. He is as good a Dawg as David Greene is. He could be starting at most schools but he loves the Dawgs and wants to be a part of our program. Show him some support will ya. Gosh I am so sick of this crap. He has never started a freakin game and some people are already implying he should be put on the bench. Give the kid the respect he deserves. Mark Richt trusts DJ so i trust him as well.
By the way vol boy, the last time DJ dropped back to pass against UT he throw a TD. I hope you take our team as lightly as you take DJ, you will be in for a rude awakening.

Martinez will focus more on stopping the pass than Van Gorder is. With Ainge, Leak, Les Miles, and Spurrier in the SEC, it will not be that bad of an idea. I think we will be fine without Van Gorder. We now have an empty slot to find a top recruiter to be a position coach.

You can say that but, the simplist way to put it is Richt-3 Fulmer-1. You can have the 90s, I will take the present decade. But with all the talent being stockpiled in Athens and Knoxville, we will have many, many great games and make our series a great rivalry.

To all of you Bulldog fans:
Don't worry, we are gonna be fine! I'm not worried at all. I would be a little worried if we had to play Bama or LSU next year along with our schedule, but we pick up Miss St. Our schedule is very favorable. Biggest game of the year for UGA will be South Carolina. I'm not worried about Tennessee, Florida, or Auburn, just South Carolina. Just the name Spurrier makes UGA VI cower a little bit. For all of you Tennessee fans who will take offense to what I just said, remember 2003!! UGA didn't have a chance in that game I recall (from all the Tenn. fans) !!
As for D.J. , I have said all along that he will not start next year because of Blake Barnes. Barnes is another David Greene with a stronger arm and he is a lot faster. Can't wait to see him play. Go Dawgs!!

Not worried about playing UT next year in Knoxville, huh? And you think SC will be tougher competition?? haha. You might want to look at how loaded the Vols are next year. I hope the players feel the same as you do. And 2003 has nothing to do with it. I don't know anyone that said UG didn't have a chance in that game. Plus, the vols have twice the talent they did 2 years ago.
Aren't you guys losing Green and Pollack? Mmmmmmmmmmm..........

UGA may have depth, but they lost a lot of experience. You can't buy, coach or replace experience.

Having seen several practices, Barnes has potential but is nowhere near ready to start in the SEC. He's entering the spring as the #3 and I honestly don't think he'll beat out Joe T. He'll get his time, but DJ is locked in as the starter this year with Blake and Joe T battling for #2

If you don't think DJ will start, you are crazy. Coach Richt loves DJ. DJ will now run his offense rather than David Greene's. He will also get the most reps in practice now. The kid has not even started a game yet. This team next year is DJ's team. He will trot onto the field for our first offensive series against Boise State. I'm excited to see how he performs.
I'm well aware that Barnes is the next David Greene with more mobility, stronger arm, and quicker release. He will take over for 2006 when his time comes. Not all QBs are mentally tough enough to start as a freshmen whether it be true or redshirt. David Greene was a very special player.

There are arguments against losing leadership. Case in point, who gave the 1998 Tennessee Vols a chance when Peyton left?? Ahhhh, but the sheer talent of T. Martin and his surrounding cast took them to the promise land. UGA will be the same way next year. Perhaps not winning the NC, but the talent and depth next year's UGA team will have is soooooooo scary. UGA's defensive lineman corp is deep. Anderson, Dixon, Gant, Golston, Swain, future stars Charles Johnson and Marquis Elmore will see some time (Johnson is supposedly Pollack's replacement??). That's 4 experienced lineman with 2 great players who will step up this year and let's not forget about newcomer to sign in February Kade Weston from Red Bank, NJ. He is an absolute monster and is sure to start soon. So, we have 7 DL who could potentially rotate in and out of the game to keep each other fresh, could spell doom for any team needing a late comeback against UGA. UGA's offensive line will be one of the best in the country, all starters return along with Bartley Miller, Josh Brock, Zeb McKenzie, and Velesco........ 9 superior lineman to rotate as well. UGA won't need to pass in the 4th quarter with that line and Kregg Lumpkin, Thomas Brown, Danny Ware, and Michael Cooper in the backfield. Does anyone see this as scary as I do? UGA is going to sign Antavious Coates, a 6'4 193lb Strong Safety to beef up the secondary.
I know UGA lost a lot of leadership, but talent and great coaching goes a long way to. Don't overlook the Dawgs next season, they will bite you in the ass if you do.
I'm not saying that UGA won't be good. Don't misunderstand me:)
I just don't think they will be a MNC-ish team. I see the DAWGS going 9-3 this year.

9-3 is good, but I'm shooting for a SEC title with all the talent we have.We have recruited the best in the SEC for 2 years and this maybe our third.
