http://www.sectalk.com/teams/Mississippi.gifWhy has it gotten this bad?

Just when Ole Miss fans said it couldn't get any worse. It has! Now the University Of Mississippi has resorted to interviewing high school coaches for their head football coaching position. Could this have been forseen? Highly doubtful, but Ole Miss AD Pete Boone has created a monster he cannot control.

What are the underlying problems at Ole Miss? On the outside, everything would appear normal. It's a tradition rich SEC school that has had it's fair share of successes and failures. If everything is normal, why have six (6) respectable division I coaches turned down the coaching position? Could it be that with the firing of Mr. Cutcliffe, the rest of the college football world are seeing another Nebraska/Solich incident. It is highly possible, but I guess we will never truly know. Below is a time-line covering all of the interviews and possible candidates.

Well, upon firing David Cutcliffe, Ole Miss figured that they had their next football coach in the bag. To sum it up, here's a timeline for their interviews.

At 11am on 12/6, Mississippi AD Mr. Boone contacted Mr. Bobby Petrino via telephone about the coaching vacancy and was told "I'm not interested and wishes not to be contacted any further."

Coach Ron Zook called Mr. Boone earlier that morning on 12/6 and cancelled his visit to Ole Miss today and stated he was not interested in the job.

Ty Willingham and Rick Neuheisel were also contacted late last week and both of them have expressed that they are not interested either.

Next on Ole Miss' list is Paul Johnson from the U.S. Naval Academy. He has expressed interest and would like to discuss the opening further. It is said that Mr. Johnson is enroute to Mississippi for an interview.

On 12/7 at 1pm EST, ESPN reported that Mr. Bobby Petrino has decided to stay at Louisville.

On 12/7 at 9pm EST, Paul Johnson after discussing details on the Ole Miss position in a face to face meeting released a statement saying he is no longer interested in the head football coaching position. This is just another blow to the Ole Miss program as they struggle to find a replacement for the newly terminated David Cutcliffe.

On 12/7 at 10pm EST Ole Miss AD Boone requested permission to speak to Vanderbilt's head football coach Bobby Johnson.
It sure looks like Ole Miss is feeling the pain of firing Cutcliffe.

On 12/8 at approx. 9:30am EST Vanderbilt's head football coach Bobby Johnson is supposed to issue a press release declining the Ole Miss job. Now, I know you are going to laugh, but this is absolutely true. Ole Miss has begun to look at a certain high school football coach by the name of Bobby Hall to replace Mr. Cutcliffe. Keep in mind that Mr. Hall has no formal collegiate coaching experience whatsoever.

Secretly, Notre Dame is cheering on this chaos so that way they are not alone in the coaching circus and I feel that Mr. Boone may have bitten off more than he can chew.

Boone is in trouble. I have a lot of respect for Ole Miss. Being from South Arkansas, i'm actually closer to Oxford than i am to Fayetteville, driving-wise that is. Many of my friends attend or attended UM. It's a great place, but this was a terrible firing. Maybe this will send a message to over-confident AD's everywhere that they better be damn sure they're making the right move, because it just may come back and bite 'em in the ass. I do think they'll get somebody other than a high school coach with no experience :)), but it's not going to be anbody worth a dang. Bobby Johnson?? No disrespect to the Commies, but it's Vanderbilt's coach. Just a bad move by Ole Miss...period.

What about tryin to get Frank Solich or maybe a quality Division 2 coach. Atleast both of them will have college experience and if they luck up and land Solich that will give them the big name and quality coach they need to get back on track.

I really think Ole Miss should look at Mike Price. He probably would relish a return to the SEC so that he could extract revenge on Alabama in the future. Too, he's done a heck of a job at UTEP. Ole Miss should swallow their pride and go after Price. He could make them a better program than they have been recently.

I don't think Mr. Price is going to leave UTEP so soon. Right now he's look at like a savior. They worship him at UTEP. He wouldn't get that attention at Ole Miss.

Additionaly Price is tryin to bring credibility back to himself. He's only been at UTEP one season , give him a couple more years there to establish his coaching skillz again and to show his behavior is not going to be an issue then its possible he would consider going to another school. I just dont see him leavin UTEP right now.

Good point! I forgot about that "stripper" incident. No biggie though. So the man wanted some company...heh heh

Being so near Juarez is not going to be helpful to improving Mike's behavior. They need to get him over to Oxford where he can concentrate completely on football.
