http://www.sectalk.com/teams/Mississippi.gifWhy has it gotten this bad?
Just when Ole Miss fans said it couldn't get any worse. It has! Now the University Of Mississippi has resorted to interviewing high school coaches for their head football coaching position. Could this have been forseen? Highly doubtful, but Ole Miss AD Pete Boone has created a monster he cannot control.
What are the underlying problems at Ole Miss? On the outside, everything would appear normal. It's a tradition rich SEC school that has had it's fair share of successes and failures. If everything is normal, why have six (6) respectable division I coaches turned down the coaching position? Could it be that with the firing of Mr. Cutcliffe, the rest of the college football world are seeing another Nebraska/Solich incident. It is highly possible, but I guess we will never truly know. Below is a time-line covering all of the interviews and possible candidates.
Well, upon firing David Cutcliffe, Ole Miss figured that they had their next football coach in the bag. To sum it up, here's a timeline for their interviews.
At 11am on 12/6, Mississippi AD Mr. Boone contacted Mr. Bobby Petrino via telephone about the coaching vacancy and was told "I'm not interested and wishes not to be contacted any further."
Coach Ron Zook called Mr. Boone earlier that morning on 12/6 and cancelled his visit to Ole Miss today and stated he was not interested in the job.
Ty Willingham and Rick Neuheisel were also contacted late last week and both of them have expressed that they are not interested either.
Next on Ole Miss' list is Paul Johnson from the U.S. Naval Academy. He has expressed interest and would like to discuss the opening further. It is said that Mr. Johnson is enroute to Mississippi for an interview.
On 12/7 at 1pm EST, ESPN reported that Mr. Bobby Petrino has decided to stay at Louisville.
On 12/7 at 9pm EST, Paul Johnson after discussing details on the Ole Miss position in a face to face meeting released a statement saying he is no longer interested in the head football coaching position. This is just another blow to the Ole Miss program as they struggle to find a replacement for the newly terminated David Cutcliffe.
On 12/7 at 10pm EST Ole Miss AD Boone requested permission to speak to Vanderbilt's head football coach Bobby Johnson.
It sure looks like Ole Miss is feeling the pain of firing Cutcliffe.
On 12/8 at approx. 9:30am EST Vanderbilt's head football coach Bobby Johnson is supposed to issue a press release declining the Ole Miss job. Now, I know you are going to laugh, but this is absolutely true. Ole Miss has begun to look at a certain high school football coach by the name of Bobby Hall to replace Mr. Cutcliffe. Keep in mind that Mr. Hall has no formal collegiate coaching experience whatsoever.
Secretly, Notre Dame is cheering on this chaos so that way they are not alone in the coaching circus and I feel that Mr. Boone may have bitten off more than he can chew.
