Auburn 38, Tennessee 28

ATLANTA (AP) -- Jason Campbell threw for three touchdowns and accounted for more than 400 yards, leading No. 3 Auburn to a 38-28 victory over 15th-ranked Tennessee in the SEC championship game Saturday night.

Auburn will probably have to be content with a Southeastern Conference championship. The Tigers aren't likely to get a shot at the title they want most. Auburn is 12-0 for the first time in school history but appears to be the odd team out in another Bowl Championship Series mess.

No. 1 Southern California also finished 12-0 by holding off UCLA 29-24 earlier Saturday. No. 2 Oklahoma was still in progress when the Tigers wrapped up their first SEC championship since 1989, but the Sooners had a big lead over Colorado in the Big 12 title game.

Barring a Sooners' collapse, Auburn seemed likely to get twice-beaten Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl - not the Orange Bowl. USC and Oklahoma had the inside track for the game that will determine the national championship.

Campbell did all he could to get the Tigers to Miami. He completed 27-of-35 for 374 yards - the first 300-yard passing game of his career. He also rushed for 57 yards, setting an SEC championship game record with 431 yards total offense.

Tennessee (9-3), which will settle for a trip to the Cotton Bowl, played much better than its first meeting against Auburn. The Volunteers were embarrassed on their home field, committing six turnovers in a 34-10 loss in early October.

With third-string Rick Clausen at quarterback because of injuries, the Volunteers rallied to tie this game at 21 on Gerald Riggs Jr.'s 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Then, Tennessee pulled to 31-28 with just over 10 minutes remaining when Riggs rumbled for a 9-yard TD.

But Campbell would not be denied. He finished off the Volunteers with his final touchdown, a 43-yard pass to Ben Obomanu with 6:56 remaining.

Campbell also threw a 53-yard scoring pass to Devin Aromashodu that put the Tigers ahead to stay late in the third quarter.

Riggs gained 182 yards on just 11 carries, the first runner in 17 games to surpass 100 yards against the fearsome Auburn defense. Cedric Houston also ran for a touchdown on the Tigers, who had given up just one rushing score all season.

Auburn had a 14-0 lead before Tennessee made a first down, and the Tigers dominated the first two quarters. The halftime numbers were ridiculously one-sided: Auburn held a 303-39 lead in total yards, was up 17-2 in first downs and had a nearly 13-minute edge in time of possession.

Yet the Volunteers were still in the game, trailing only 21-7 because of two big mistakes by Auburn.

Punter Kody Bliss mishandled a snap, forcing him to fall on the ball at the Tigers 14. The sophomore slammed the ball to the turf, then got an earful from coach Tommy Tuberville on the sideline.

Bliss' mistake set up a 2-yard touchdown dive by Cedric Houston.

Auburn was in position to extend its two-touchdown lead in the waning seconds of the first half, but Campbell messed up by attempting a pass over the middle. The ball went through the hands of Tennessee linebacker Omar Gaither and was intercepted in the end zone by Corey Campbell with just 7 seconds left, costing the Tigers a chance to at least attempt a field goal.

Campbell had another costly turnover early in the second half, fumbling on a hit by Kevin Burnett. Turk McBride recovered at Auburn 19, leading to Clausen's 17-yard touchdown pass to Robert Meachem.

After Bliss punted into the Tennessee end zone, Riggs found a gaping hole on the very next play. He wasn't so much as touched on his long, tying touchdown.

But Campbell made sure that Auburn didn't squander the chance to at least win one championship.

Auburn's getting ROBBED!!!!!!!!

Here's what Jim Donnan had to say when I asked him a question on ESPN about this game:

James, Monroe NC: Hey Mr. Donnan,Should the wins against UGA, LSU, and Tennessee be taken into consideration when voting tomorrow? All three of these teams when Auburn beat them were in the Top-10.

Jim Donnan: (9:56 PM ET ) Absolutely, James. In my mind that is the thing that separates Auburn from USC and OU. Those are three impressive wins.

Jim Donnan: (9:57 PM ET ) But the biggest probelm for Auburn is where the Tigers started in the polls. They were not in the top 15 to start the year and that was just too big a hole to dig out of. Just one more reason the polls should start later in the year.

Those are only 2 voters out of several thousand! Hopefully ((Crossing Fingers)) Auburn will convince some voters. Oklahoma was only ahead of Auburn by something to the count of 8 votes.

Its goign to be really close. In all honesty I think all 3 and deserve a shot at the NC that way we would really KNOW who was better.

That's where the BCS+1 system would come into play. Auburn vs. Utah and USC vs. Oklahoma, then the winners play each other.

I would much rather have the BCS+1 system than a full blown play-off.

Dont forget about Boise ST they too went undefeated , they have a legit gripe. I am with ya on the playoff system even if that means a few less regular season games. play 11 games , 7 confrense games 3 non confrense and the Confrense title game and then go into the play off system if you are in the top 8 if not then wait for ya bowl game assumin you have the record to go to one.

Don't even go there about Boise State. Boise State hasn't and DIDN'T play anybody. They play Georgia next year. So we will see how explosive that offense is. I'll give Utah a shot because they did play Texas A&M and BYU.

For the record, 2 years ago, USC whipped Boise State 33-14.

LOL I aint sayin Boise St would make any kinda impact , Im just sayin being undefeated no matter what and being in a division 1 A school gives ya a chance. If we had a play off they would def get in and then get blown out by a bigger school with probably 2 loses , but they would atleast get their shot. Thats all I'm saying. For the record i dont see them comin within 21 points of Georgia next year.

Georgia is going to be hurting too!

They are losing Greene, Gibson, Pollack and a few others.

True but Boise St will probably have some key losses too and I just dont see their team being as good as the one this year.

No way....

Boise State had a hard time with San Jose State for crying out loud. Not too mention that one of their TB's only has one leg. NO JOKE!

Yup Im with ya on that. You win the toughest confrense in the country and go undefeated and you still dont get to play for the Title.. somethings very very wrong with that.

Well the commentators for the Ok/Colorado game said Auburn knew the rules so it's tough luck.

Well, didn't Southern Cal know about the rules beforehand last year, but they still claimed they were champs.

Well, the way VT has played this year, that would give them a STRONG argument.

VA Tech was really a surprise to me actually. I did not see them coming in and winning the ACC in their first year. They have realy done a great job there. REmember they played USC the first game of the year and was very strong against them. If Auburn puts a hurtin on VA TEch and USC sneaks by Oklahoma then yeah I agree Auburn will have a very strong case for atleast a share of the title.

1984 for us but thats going to change Thursday night at Leigon Field when the Prattville LIons play the Hoover ( Birmingham area ) something or anothers ( I forget their nic name lol ) Im thinkin about takin off work and going up there just to watch my old school and see if they can pull off the unthinkable. Btw another lil fact about Prattville, we havent lost a regular season games in 2 1/2 years. Alabama and Auburn usually grab a recruit or two every few years from here too so we are pretty good in terms of talent level.
