View Full Version : USC Recruiting News
According to what I have heard, USC's Athletics Dept. phones have been ringing off the hook with recruits now wanting to come to USC since Spurrier has been linked to the HC job.
The #1 nationally ranked WR Derrick Williams (Rivals, PrepStar, SuperPrep, TheInsiders) has stated that he would be willing to de-commit and listen to what Mr. Spurrier had to say if Mr. Spurrier is interested.

I am sure you also heard that Notre Dame commitment, Martin Frierson, a receiver from Irmo, had earlier expressed an interest in playing for Spurrier, "wherever he coached."

I heard about that the other day.

Now he is back on the recruiting market since the announcement of Ty Willingham's termination. Currently, USC is his front runner.

I think the firing of Willingham is going to greatly affect recruting... all them kids that commited to Notre Dame just because of Willingham are going to recend on that commitment and will be lookin another school cuz they feel liek they have been cheated.

Those recruits were sold on Notre Dame. A coach goes out and sells the university to the recruit. That's part of the job. Those recruits along with Mr. Willingham were cheated. With so much parity in college football now, people don't go to a certain school because of tradition anymore. They wanna go to a place to win and get exposure so they can make a leap at the NFL.
We also have the #4 TE in the nation (out of North Carolina) interested in us now, and Ben Olsen who in 2002 was the #1 overall prospect in the nation(A QB). He's 6'5, threw for 3000 yds, 30 TDs, and rushed for 10 tds his senior season in HS. He redshirted in 2002 for BYU and then went on a 2 year mormon mission in Canada, USC is now one of his front-runners. Also, and yes this is not a misprint, www.allsportstalk.com (Phil Kornblut) reports that Roscoe Crosby (a former clemson WR) wants to return to college football and his first choice to play would be at USC.., it's certainly been a wild couple of weeks, I'm glad we're not going to a bowl game b/c all of this recruiting info is too much to keep up with let alone a real football game!!! J/k btw....

Yep...Mr. Spurrier had a in-house meeting with QB prospect Cameron Sexton today. Sexton says he will make a decision first thing next week.
I heard about that NC TE too. His name is Jonathan Hannah from South View HS. UNC has been courting him for years and finally got a in-home visit. During Mr. Bunting's visit, Coach Spurrier called and set-up a in-home visit. HAHAHAHA! Here UNC has begged for a visit for years and in roughly 80 seconds, Spurrier sets one up after talking to the kid for a minute. That speaks volumes on Spurrier's ability to recruit.

DeL, I think that is a long-shot. I hear he is good though. I think Bama has a chance to get RBs Mikel Simpson out of Pennsylvania and Roy Upchurch out of Tallahassee. I think they have both expressed more interest in Bama than Davis. Is Davis as good as advertised?

I have seen Davis play personally and he is as good as he sounds. This guy cuts on a dime and has tremendous break-away speed. He is more of a "dancing" type TB. He's not a N-S runner. He reminds me a little of the old Nebraska QB Eric Crouch with his speed and agility.

Good news RW! Mr. Spurrier and Stockhill spent 4 1/2 hours with that QB prospect Cameron Sexton and he is really excited about Spurrier and his system and he is supposed to make his decision on 12/2/04. He has narrowed his list down to USC, UNC and Florida St. According to what I have heard, Spurrier promised him the chance at being the starter as a freshman and that if he chose USC, he would do everything he could to make him the best QB he can be. Cameron also stated that he may still commit to USC even without taking a official visit.

Its like Ive said time and time again .. big time big name coaches bring in the big time big named recruits :p
Yeah, I don't want Sexton though, I'm sick of the "mobile QB" crap. It didn't work with Corey Jenkins, Dondrial Pinkins, and Syvelle Newton, they are not SEC QB's, they are SEC athletes however, I just want someone to make good throws and look down his whole progression, I'm sick of looking at the #1 WR and then tucking and running for a gain of 1.., Give me Ben Olsen b/c we have too many RB's as it is...
Hardie
12-02-2004, 11:07 AM
Well theres something to be said for having a mobile quarterback. Granted you want to be able to throw the ball if you are droppin back to pass but you know there are those situations that it is way better to tuck and run. I think a mobile quarterback is good but they have got to know when to be checkin for that 2nd and 3rd receiver.
Look at the SEC champs for the past 5 years as well as NC's the past 5 years. QB's that are not really mobile but make good decisions, I'll take that any day over Corey Jenkins, Dondrial Pinkins, and Syvelle Newton...

Good point! Other than that, Sexton committed to the UNC Tarholes today. Honestly, he's making a BIG mistake.
Yeah I just read about the committment to UNC, I'm very glad b/c that way we don't have to deal with it at all and can concentrate on getting a pro-style pocket passer. I really hope we land Ben Olsen, can you imagine him passing to our recievers and RB's?

Yeah! He would be a nice addition. A big beefy guy like that. Kinda reminds me of Jared Lorenzen. Hey RW, check out the new post of mine in the forums.
I heard this morning that Olsen is gonna stay out west, I hope we get somebody though.....

Conway HS: TB Bobby Wallace 5-8 190lbs. Runs the 40 in 4.4
He has rushed for over 1900 yds this year and ran for 2100 yds and 26 TD's last season.
Projected Position: TB/KR
Hey RW, remember that highly touted recruit that played with Ko Simpson by the name of C.J. Barber? Well, he's enrolling in Jan. It has been said that he's Ko Simpson's twin brother on the field. Imagine that? WOOHOO!
The pieces are starting to fall into place.
I almost forgot. Jonathan Joseph is going to be back too! He got a medical redshirt this past year so he's going to have 2 good full years with us. Speaking of Joseph, that's the fastest dude that I have seen. He has a 40 of 4.32

If he can bring those TOP-TIER recruits in, that would be great! I think he will bring in a few of them though. Overall, a solid class so far.
QB Tommy Beecher (6-2 200) of Concord, NC will make an official visit to USC in January. Beecher was contacted by Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier last week and set a January 7th visit. He has not been offered by USC. Beecher has an offer from Richmond and wil visit the Spiders January 14th. He is also drawing interest from Army. Beecher has led his team to the 3A state championship game with back to back come from behind victories. Two games ago he threw a game winning touchdown pass on the final play of the game. This past Friday he led his team back from a 20-0 deficit with five minutes to play. This season Beecher has passed for over 3600 yards and 41 touchdowns. As a junior he passed for 2700 yards and 28 touchdowns.
USC football coach Steve Spurrier is preparing to host his first official visits this weekend, and scheduled to be among them is DB Knowledge Thomas (5-11 175) of York, PA. Thomas has already visited Boston College and Maryland. He also plans to vist NC State. Maryland is his current leader. Thomas has offers from USC, Boston College, Penn State, Maryland, West Virginia, NC State, Minnesota, Connecticut and Indiana. USC is also scheduled to have visits from three junior college prospects but it's not certain they will be brought in this weekend at this point. Scheduled to visit are WR Kerry Reed (6-2 198) of Coffeyville, KS, DB Mike West (6-2 215) of Butler, KS and OL Marcus Gordon (6-6 320) of Highland, KS.

QB Levi Brown (6-4 212) of Mount Juliet High School in Mount Juliet, Tennessee will officially visit South Carolina this weekend. Brown is a dropback passer with a big arm, according to his coach David Crawford. "He can stand back there and sling it," Crawford said. "He can run if he has to as well. But he doesn't juke, he'll just lower his shoulder." Brown suffered a deep bone bruise in his right knee during the sixth week of the season. Crawford attributes that to the reason many schools have shyed away. Brown has scored a 4.0 GPA and will graduate this December. He will look to enroll in a school in January. Ole Miss, Kentucky and Richmond are the other schools after Brown. But Crawford says Brown is impressed with USC. "He really liked the way Steve Spurrier Jr. came in and talked to him," Crawford said. "He was real impressed with that. So that's why he's gonna visit." So far no schools have offered Brown, including the Gamecocks.
QB Lee Sweeney (6-4 215) of Frienship Christian School in Lebanon, Tennessee is showing interest in South Carolina. According to his coach, John Mcneal, film has been sent of Sweeney to the USC coaches. Mcneal said that he has spoken with USC assistant coach Rick Stockstill on several occasions, and that they are in the process of reviewing that film. Sweeney finished with 2,819 yards, 30 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions this past season. He also rushed 68 times for 301 yards and 13 touchdowns.
"He broke all of our school records last year," Mcneal said. "Then he turned around and broke all of 'em again this year." Sweeney has been offered by Hawaii, Kentucky, Texas Tech, Kansas, and UConn. He will take an official visit to Connecticut this weekend and plans to visit Hawaii either next weekend or after the first of the year.
WR Jeron Harvey (6-5 210) of Dodge City JC in Kansas is waiting on USC head coach Steve Spurrier to offer. According to Dodge City recruiting coordinator Andy Siegal, film has been sent to the USC staff and they are expecting word sometime today with an offer. Harvey was second in the nation in receiving yards this past year. Harvey sports a 42 inch vertical leap and a 4.5 forty. Originally from Jacksonville, he will have three years to play three.
He is also considering Louisiana Tech, Houston, Ball State, and Middle Tennessee State.

You know that if Hawaii is looking at this kid, he can obviously throw the ball pretty good! That's all the Rainbow do is throw the ball.
WR Kerry Reed (6-2 198) of Coffeyville JC, KS will make his official visit to USC this weekend. Reed is expected to arrive in Columbia Friday night. He has also visited Texas A&M and Mississippi State. Florida State is also a possible visit. Reed is the fifth confirmed official visit for USC. The others are DB Brandon Isaac of Georgia Military JC, DB Mike West of Butler County JC, KS, DB Knowledge Timmons of York, PA and QB Levi Brown of Mount Juliet, TN. Clemson has no official visits scheduled for this weekend.
Bobby Wallace TB for the South in the Shrine Bowl won South Offensive MVP. He had 11 carries for 83 yards (led all rushers), and 3 receptions for 30 yards for the South (led the South), for 1 TD.
Bobby Wallace is committed USC. (He was Spurrier's first commitment.)
DB Brandon Isaac (6-2 185) of Georgia Military JC and DB Mike West (6-2 215) of Butler County JC, KS committed to USC over the weekend during their official visits according to Isaac. USC is waiting on decisions from WR Kerry Reed (6-2 198) of Coffeyville JC, KS and DB Knowledge Timmons (5-11 175) of York, PA who also visited over the weekend. A fifth visitor, QB Levi Brown (6-4 212) of Mount Juliet, TN has not yet been offered by the Gamecocks. Isaac also had offers from Utah, Memphis, Marshall and UNLV and is glad to have his decision made. "It relieves me some from all the recruiting," he said. "I can now focus on what I can do. It feels good to be a Gamecock. They lost three seniors in the secondary so it's open right now. I have the opportunity to come in and play right away at free safety." Isaac said his host for the visit was Tremaine Tyler. Isaac is a product of Blackville-Hilda. He will graduate in March and hopes to enroll in school then. He will have three years to play two. This season he had 25 tackles and 1 interception.

3-Star DT/DE Jarriel King 6-6, 270 lbs.
OL Prospect Will Bergen wasn't too happy to know that the coach that was recruiting him was NOT present at the university (Pitt) when he had a scheduled visit. He is now considering USC as his top choice.
3-Star OL Will Bergen 6-4, 265 lbs. 4.9/40
DB Josh Walker (6-2 180) of Tampa has set an official visit to USC for January 14th. He will also visit Syracuse on the 21st. Those are his only two visits right now. He also has offers from Iowa State, NC State, Maryland, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Florida, West Virginia and Ball State. Walker says USC currently leads. "I like South Carolina a lot," he said. "They lost some senior DBs this year. I'd have a chance to play early there." Walker's team lost in the state championship game Saturday. For the season he had 60 tackles with 5 interceptions and 4 sacks. He can play either safety position.
QB Jonathan Garner (6-4 205) of Daytona Beach, FL was scheduled to visit Michigan over the weekend but he canceled that visit. "They had a quarterback commit so it made it easier for me to eliminate them from the process," he said. Garner will visit USC January 7th, Florida January 14th and Ole Miss January 21st. "I'm still a Florida commitment," Garner said.
USC's new coaching staff has yet to make contact withi DB Gary Riggs (6-3 200) of Jennings, LA. Riggs was a hotly pursued prospect by former Gamecock recruiter Dave Roberts. He is scheduled to visit USC January 14th and Ole Miss January 21st, but with both staffs in transition, he's not heard from either in a few weeks. He has not set any other visits. He also has offers from Louisiana-Monroe, Tulane, Louisiana Tech and McNeese State.
USC and Ole Miss were the two favorites of DL Justin Fulmer (6-5 280) of Sterling, LA but with both going through coaching changes, he has not been contacted by either. So, Fulmer committed recently to Louisiana Monroe with the idea he'll still keep his options open for the larger programs. Fulmer is scheduled to visit USC January 14th and Ole Miss January 21st but those visits are tentative at this time. Fulmer finished the season with 64 tackles, 22 for losses, 6 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries.
Brown Enjoyed USC Visit
By Michael Haney
QB Levi Brown (6-4 212) of Mount Juliet, TN enjoyed his official visit to South Carolina this past weekend. "It was a very good weekend for Levi and his family," Mount Juliet head coach Dave Crawford said. "Anytime you get to meet with a coach the caliber of Steve Spurrier it's pretty good." Crawford said Brown is very interested in the Gamecocks, though no official offer has been made. Brown has scored a 4.0 GPA, and according to Crawford the Gamecocks might pursue an academic scholarship for him. Brown will graduate early and can enroll in the spring. Brown did receive an offer from Richmond over the weekend and the Spiders want him to make an official visit there this coming weekend. However, he also has a visit set to Kentucky, so he is unsure where he will go this weekend. Brown has been in contact with Ole Miss and Kentucky, but neither schools have offered.
RB Mike Ford (6-2 205) of Sarasota, FL said he will make an official visit to USC in January, probably on the 14th. He will also visit Auburn, most likely on the 21st, and he plans to visit Michigan State. Those three have offered along with Pittsburgh, Eastern Michigan, Eastern Kentucky and Rutgers. He has also been getting some recent interest from Florida, Miami and Florida State. Ford ruhed for 2836 yards and 37 touchdowns this season, and had 15 other touchdowns called back.
Maryland Commit Plans USC Visit
RB Brandyn Young (6-0 195) of Tucker, GA has been committed to Maryland but he has scheduled an official visit to USC for January 7th. Young has offers from USC, Maryland, Oklahoma, North Carolina and Oklahoma State. He's also getting interest from Georgia Tech and Mississippi State.
Stull Might Set USC Visit
QB Bill Stull (6-3 194) of Pittsburgh is drawing some interest from USC but has not been offered. He will meet at his school this week with Gamecock recruiter John Latina and he might set an official visit. Stull visited Kentucky December 10th and will visit Maryland this weekend. Those two have offered along with Wisconsin, Indiana and some MAC schools. He's also drawing interest from Ole Miss and a recruiter from that school is to be in his home Tuesday. Stull is a pocket passer with a strong arm. He passed for 3310 yards and 40 touchdowns this season.
LB Gregory Hardy (6-0 215) of Memphis won the 4A Mr. Football Award in Tennessee this season after totaling 160 tackles and 8 sacks. He has scheduled three official visits...Tennessee State January 7th, USC on the 14th and Central Arkansas on the 21st. He has offers from Memphis and Tennessee State. He also plans to set a visit with Memphis. He says USC and Memphis are his two favorites right now.
USC Offers Beecher
Last weekend was a big one for QB Tommy Beecher (6-2 200) of Concord, NC. First, he led his team to their first state championship in 75 years. Then, he received an official scholarship offer from USC football coach Steve Spurrier. According to Beecher's father, Spurrier made the offer on Saturday. Spurrier will make an in home visit with Beecher Wednesday night and might be in position to pull in his first quarterback commitment as the Gamecocks' head coach. Beecher also has an offer from Richmond. Beecher finished the season with nearly 3700 passing yards and 42 touchdowns. He is scheduled to visit USC January 7th and Richmond January 14th.
USC is one of the three finalists for WR O.J. Murdock (6-0 179) of Tampa, and though he's reluctant to identify a leader, the Gamecocks are strong with him. "South Carolina is very high on my list," he said. "I feel really wide open though. I like it that way." USC recruiter David Reaves will be at Murdock's school Wednesday and head coach Steve Spurrier will make his in home visit January 3rd. Murdock will visit Florida January 7th and USC on the 14th. Miami will be his other official visit. Murdock caught 56 passes for 900 yards and 7 touchdowns this season. And yes, his initials do stand for Orenthal James, as in O.J. Simpson.
LB Marvin Sapp (6-1 210) of Jacksonville, FL has been committed to Georgia Tech since September but he will take two official visits in January. He will see Maryland January 7th and USC on the 14th. He visited Tech in September. "The visits will help me with my position with Georgia Tech or help me make sujre I make the right decision," Sapp said. He is down to a final three of USC, Georgia Tech and Maryland. He says he remains committed to Tech as he makes these other visits. Sapp had 150 tackles with 3 sacks, 1 interception, 3 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries this season.

"South Carolina is at the top of my list and in all likelihood I will go there next year," Beecher said. "I might make a commitment in another week. I want to talk things over some with my coach. If not, I'll do it on my official visit. It's just a matter of time before I make my commitment." Beecher is scheduled to visit USC January 7th. Barber Re-opens Recruiting
DB C.J Barber (6-2 215) of Rock Hill, SC will enroll at Pearl River JC on Jan 8th. Barber signed with USC in February but did not qualify. He was going to be placed in junior college by USC, but decided to stay home and try to qualify at a local community college. Barber has had no contact with USC since the coaching changes. He developed a close relationship with former Gamecock assistant coach and current East Carolina head coach Skip Holtz. Since he has not heard from the Gamecocks, Barber now says his recruiting is wide open. He will play only one year at Pearl River and will be eiligible for the 2006 recruiting year.
West Signs USC Papers.
DB Mike West (6-2 215) of Butler County JC, KA said Thursday he signed his letter of intent with USC Wednesday and faxed and mailed copies to the university. West had committed to the Gamecocks on his official visit last weekend. Wednesday was the first day mid year junior college transfers could sign a letter of intent. DB Brandon Isaac of Georgia Military JC, who also committed to USC last weekend, also was expected to sign Wednesday.
Belcher Firm With USC.
DB Mychal Belcher (6-1 180) of Dorman, who has committed to USC for months, recently talked about taking other official visits. But his only official visit will be to USC January 14th according to his father. Belcher is firm with the Gamecocks and is not considering any other options. Belcher played quarterback for the Cavaliers but will be a defensive back at USC. He's playing strictly in the secondary at the Shrine Bowl.

Beecher Commits To USC
QB Tommy Beecher (6-2 200) of Concord, NC became the first quarterback commitment for Steve Spurrier at USC Friday when he called the Gamecock coach and made his official pledge. "Yesterday I told coach Spurrier I was going to come home and sleep on it," Beecher said. "We just felt it was the best opportunity for me to play for coach Spurrier. I'm definitely excited about it and I'm looking forward to it. I think he was pretty excited. I know he wants to pass the ball and hopefully I'm the man to do that. With his help, I can be a good one." Beecher led his team to the 3A state championship this season passing for 3700 yards and 42 touchdowns. He will visit USC January 7th. He has canceled a scheduled visit to Richmond.

Great article. Thanks. I don't think Spurrier is worried about recuiting a big name QB. He has been known to custom build one from scratch.

USC Now Leads For Cooper
LB Keon Cooper (6-3 235) of Memphis had been favoring Missouri and was scheduled to visit there this weekend. But he didn't make the trip, and he now considers USC his favorite. "We already got two of our own (from Melrose High) down there and they are doing real good," Cooper said. "Plus, they have a new head coach andn it seems like he's going the right way. And they want me to play outside linebacker and I'm a defensive man. I'm 75% sure I'll commit to USC." Cooper is scheduled to visit USC January 14th but he might make his commitment in early January when recruiter Ron Cooper makes his next visit. He is also scheduled to visit Southern Miss January 21st.
Timmons Decision Is Coming
DB Knowledge Timmons (5-11 175) of York, PA made his official visit to Minnesota over the weekend. That was his final visit and he plans to make a decision by Wednesday. Timmons also has visited USC, Boston College, Maryland and NC State. He says all the schools are even and he's not trimmed his list. He had calls Sunday from NC State, Maryland and Penn State.
USC Remains Interested In Brown
USC remains involved with QB Levi Brown (6-4 212) of Mount Juliet, TN though the Gamecocks have not offered him a football scholarship. Brown is a 4.3 student with a 29 on the ACT. He has graduated from high school and can enroll in college in January. USC is looking at an academic scholarship package for Brown which would be converted to an athletic scholarship once he plays in his first game. Brown made an official visit to Richmond over the weekend and is being hotly pursued by the Spiders. Ole Miss and Kentucky also remain interested and plan to talk to him this week. He is also drawing interest from UT Chattanooga. Brown played in just six games this season due to a deep bone bruise in his knee. He passed for 1100 yards with 10 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

He has been to Arizona, Missouri and Nebraska and will visit Oklahoma State January 14th. LaFell said USC just started to recruit him last week. LaFell said he does not have a favorite and he'll decide on that fifth visit after Christmas. This season he had 46 catches for 1116 yards and 16 touchdowns. Rank Talks About USC Commitment
RB Taylor Rank (6-2 201) of Vancouver, WA, who committed to USC Monday, is ready to fit in with Gamecock fans who fight with those outside the border over the school's acronymical identification. "The real USC?" Rank laughed in recognizing he'd be heading to a part of the world where those letters mean South Carolina. As for why he committed to the Gamecocks, Rank said a big reason was "just the opportunity to play for the coach I think is the best active coach around in coach Spurrier. It's just two hours away from where I used to live (in Georgia). And I think the program is going in a great direction. Rank, who also plays safety and outside linebacker, said the Gamecocks recruited him as a running back. He also had offers from Washington, Montana State and Portland State. He will make his visit to USC January 14th.
Sledge Will Check Out USC
WR Eric Sledge (6-4 195) of Apopka, FL says he will make an official visit to USC January 21st. Sledge was offered by the previous staff at USC and says the new staff is honoring that offer. Sledge can play in the secondary and linebacker but said the Gamecocks like him as a receiver. This season he had 17 catches for 300 yards and 6 touchdowns. On defense he had 75 tackles with 4 interceptions, 2 returned for touchdowns, and 1 kickoff return for a score. He has visited West Virginia and will visit Louisville January 7th, Ohio State or NC State, with a lean to Ohio State, January 14th and USC on the 21st. Sledge said he does not have a favorite.
USC Scratches Garner From List
QB Jonathan Garner (6-4 205) of Daytona Beach, FL, who decommitted from Florida Monday, was also notified Monday by USC that they would no longer be recruiting him. "Coach Stockstill called me and said they had taken a commitment from a quarterback and they were only going to take one," Garner said. So, Garner's January 7th visit to USC has been canceled. He currently is scheduled to visit Ole Miss January 21st and Georgia Tech on the 28th though he expects to move both visits up.
Peoples Planning USC Visit
LB Marvin Peoples (6-2 227) of Apopka, FL was offered by the previous USC staff and is waiting to hear from the new staff if they will honor the offer. USC assistant John Hunt was by his school last week and picked up a tape of his senior season in which he compiled over 100 tackles with 3 sacks. Peoples said he's been asked by USC to keep January 21st open for an official visit, and he will do that. Peoples has visited West Virginia and will visit Central Florida January 7th, Kentucky or Iowa State on the 14th and Ole Miss on the 28th. He's a slight lean to USC because he has family in Columbia and Charleston.
Timmons Hears From USC
WR Knowledge Timmons (5-11 175) of York, PA is working on his final decision and hopes to make it Wednesday or Thursday. Tuesday night he was called by USC recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. Timmons is also considering Boston College, Maryland, NC State and Minnesota. He says all the schools are still in the running and they're about even.

Arkansas Receiver Strong On USC
WR Slick Shelley (6-4 195) of Fort Smith, AR says USC has moved to the front of his list along with Arkansas after he was contacted and offered by Gamecock assistant Madre Hill. "They are one of my top choices to choose from, them and Arkansas," Hill said. "My sophomore and junior year, they recruited me. Then after the coaching change, I didn't hear from them for a while. Then Coach Hill popped up at my school a week ago. Now they are going to throw the ball and they don't have many receivers. I want to go somewhere where I know I have a good chance of starting." Shelley expects to visit USC January 7th and Arkansas on the 14th. He is also scheduled to visit LSU January 21st and Tennessee on the 28th. This season Shelley caught 74 passes for 860 yards and 8 touchdowns. As a junior he had 62 catches for 873 yards and 16 scores.

TN OL Waiting On USC
OL Paul Edwards (6-6 305) of Mckenzie, TN has received four Division-1 offers from Mississippi State, Memphis, Vanderbilt, and USC. As it stands right now, his top two are Memphis and Vandy, but he is waiting to hear from USC. Edwards was offered by the Gamecocks previous staff, and he said he never thought he would hear from USC once Steve Spurrier was named head coach. "I didn't hear anything for a while, and low and behold last Sunday night the new offensive line coach (John Hunt) called me and he said he wanted to see film on me so he and coach Spurrier could evaluate it," Edwards said. Edwards says he is really considering staying in state, but he's not ruling out the Gamecocks just yet. "Right now I'm leaning towards staying in state because it would be easier on me and my family. But I am interested to see what coach Spurrier has to say about me." Edwards took an official visit to Memphis Dec. 10th, and has a tentative visit set to Vanderbilt on Jan. 21st, if they don't fulfill their numbers by then.
McClellan Names USC Favorite
USC has moved to the lead with one of the nation's top unsigned junior college prospects. WR Julius McClellan (6-4 226) of Coahoama JC, MS said Tuesday the Gamecocks are now his leader over Mississippi State. "They throw the ball," McClellan said about the reason USC is #1. "Their lead is big." McClellan said he met with Gamecock recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. at his school a couple of weeks ago. He will visit USC January 14th. McClellan has visited Texas A&M and will visit Alabama January 7th and Mississippi State January 21st. This season he had 40 catches, 14 going for touchdowns. He also plays defensive and said Spurrier Jr. told him he might also play on that side of the ball at USC. McClellan will graduate in May and have four years to play three. He's a native of Lakeland, FL.

Shrine Bowl WR Says USC Leads
WR Brandon Woods (6-2 205) of Durham, NC played in the Shrine Bowl last week in Spartanburg and might be back in the Palmetto State full time next season. Woods is down to USC and Virginia and says the Gamecocks lead for him. "Just having an awesome coach in Steve Spurrier and throwing the ball, and being able to win games and a possible bowl game," were reasons Woods stated for favoring USC. He will visit USC January 14th and Virginia on the 21st. He said USC has not officially offered but expects an offer to be made. "If they offer, I'll consider committing," Woods said. He has also drawn interest from Virginia Tech and Tennessee. This season Woods had 25 catches for 600 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Florida TE High On USC
TE William Bergen (6-4 250) of Tampa will make an official visit to USC in January and right now he has the Gamecocks and Iowa State tied for #1 on his list. Bergen says several things standout for him when thinking of USC. "They are pretty good in engineering," he said. "The atmosphere up there is great. I went to a couple of games. I can't wait to come on my visit. Coach Spurrier is coming to visit January 3rd. That's going to be exciting. Bergen has visited Pittsburgh. He will visit Iowa State January 14th and Purdue January 21st. He's looking at Illinois for a fifth visit. Bergen played mostly offensive tackle this season but he's being recruiting for tight end.
Owens Planning USC Visit
WR Rod Owens (6-1 175) of Jacksonville has an offer from USC but hasn't heard from the Gamecocks in a couple of weeks. Still, he expects to make an official visit to USC in January. He has visited Maryland and will visit Florida State January 7th. All three have offered. Owens can also play cornerback and safety.
Arkansas WR To Visit USC
New USC running backs coach Madre Hill has found another receiver from Arkansas who is interested in checking out the Gamecocks. He is also looking at Rice and Oklahoma State for possible visits.
USC Checking Film Of GA Back
RB Jonathan Armstrong (5-11 195) of Savannah was highly regarded by Lou Holtz's staff at USC. It remains to be seen if Steve Spurrier's staff feels the same way. Armstrong said he talked last weekend with Steve Spurrier Jr. and sent tape to the USC football office Tuesday. Armstrong expects USC to get back to him by the end of the week. Armstrong currently has offers from Savannah STate and Georgia Southern. He's also hearing from Georgia Tech and Central Florida. This season he rushed for 802 yards and 8 touchdowns after being limited to just six games due to a high ankle sprain.

Hey man, that's an impressive list. Since it is a numbers game, I wonder what percentage of these guys will sign (there seems to be a larger than usual percentage of quality receivers on the list-----hmmm, now why would that be? LOL)

That's the list as of 12/21/04??? Not 12/22/04!
jesus, a week ago it looked like we might only have a top 50 class, but damn, unbelivable that this is my team, finally all the years of sucking are over, look at those recruits!! We could have a top 10 class in Spurriers first class!! Definately a possibility now if we can sign some of these guys, good to be a cock fan, each day the list gets better and better and the interest higher and higher! Last week Clemson fans were saying it couldn't be done on such short notice, it can when you have SOS as coach and Nix/Thompson as coach, what a great staff we have....

I find it hard to believe to. Keep in mind Mr. Spurrier has been on the job 1 month. If Ole Miss fans want to see what REAL talent looks like, they need to look at this.
we just need to make sure to capitalize on it, something we've yet to do in the past...

90% of those kids WANT to come here. That's the difference from last year. Last year we had to go get them and beg. This year, they are begging us.
I meant capitalize on the field, we've got 1 10 win season....

Interest Growing In Slaughter
A strong showing at the Shrine Bowl has spiked the recruiting interest for Northwestern OL Thomas Slaughter (6-5 240). The son of former USC All America lineman Chuck Slaughter was contacted last week by Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier. Monday he was called by recruiter Rick Stockstill and told new line coach John Hunt would be following up soon. Meantime, Virginia Tech and East Carolina also have been showing interest. He plans a visit to East Carolina, probably on January 14th. Slaughter has offers from Furman and Newberry and is scheduled to visit Furman January 7th.

Florida DL Still Likes USC
DL Kerry Bonds (6-3 232) of Tallahassee, FL is still set to visit USC on Jan 7th. Bonds has already visited Maryland on Dec. 3rd where he said he had "a pretty good time." Bonds was set to visit Oklahoma this past weekend, but now will either reschedule with the Sooners or visit Texas instead. Bonds has a visit scheduled for Florida on Jan. 21st. Right now he says that USCand Maryland are his top two. "I just want to go to a place where things aren't as set at my position and where I can make a difference. Right now those two really stick out to me," Bonds said.
USC Lands Florida Speedster
DB Chris Singleton (5-11 185) of Fort Myers, one of the fastest prospects in Florida, committed last week to USC. Singleton's commitment was one of three from Dunbar High School reported last Wednesday by the Fort Myers News-Press. Singleton's teammate, defensive back Jeremy Ware, confirmed today that Singleton did commit. Singleton also had offers from Wisconsin and Rutgers and he drew interest from Florida, Miami and Michigan. Singleton and Ware are scheduled to visit USC January 14th. Ware will also visit Troy State January 7th and he also plans to visit Louisville, Iowa State, Michigan or Florida Atlantic. He has been favoring USC and continues to lean that way.

Singleton should be a great addition to our secondary.
Love Plans USC Commitment
If all goes right for WR Jamar Love (6-2 190) of North Little Rock, AR, he will be be committing to USC. Love has already had Gamecock recruiter Madre Hill in his home and while he has not yet been offered, Hill has indicated to him an offer is coming. Then Love will be ready to join the Gamecocks. "Everybody doesn't have the opportunity to play for Steve Spurrier," Love said. "I would like to play for someone like that. Right now I'm pretty sold." Love will visit USC January 21st and might wait until his visit to commit. He was offered early by Arkansas but hasn't heard much from them recently. He's also drarwing interest from Memphis and Rice. Love played mostly on defense this season but is projected as a receiver in college. This season he had 10 catches for 350 yards and 3 touchdowns. As a cornerback he made 63 tackles.
Brown Giving No Hints
WR Aaron Brown (6-1 196) of Zachery, LA said a couple of weeks ago he had made a decision and it was an SEC school. That would lead one to believe his choice is either USC or Auburn since those are the only SEC schools he's scheduled to visit. He goes to USC January 14th and Auburn on the 21st. Southern Miss is sandwiched in-between. Brown repeated his stance Wednesday night saying he's decided on an SEC school but he plans to sit on his decision until Signing Day.

A little FYI, Spurrier only goes for people that can qualify. PERIOD! If you noticed or keep up with recruiting, Spurrier doesn't go after kids that will have a hard time qualifying because it's not worth the effort. Look at his QB for instance.

As I enter my first message as a new member to this forum, I am reminded of the years of nervous anticipation centered around Gamecock recruiting. This year, thus far, has proven to be a breath of fresh air as recruits from all over the US seem genuinely anxious to play for USC and the Ol' Ball Coach. All of this renewed excitement has me wishing it was time to tee it up. I take it back, as I forgot about Gamecock Baseball--after that, lets tee it up

Brown Hears From USC Again
QB Levi Brown (6-4 212) of Mount Juliet, TN was contacted by USC assistant coach Steve Spurrier Jr. Wednesday. The Gamecocks have not offered and Brown was told by Spurrier they won't know if they will until January. USC is also working on an academic scholarship for Brown which would convert to a football scholarship the first time he plays. Brown said he remains interested in USC. He has an offer from Richmond and is also drawing strong interest from Ole Miss. "They like my tape but they are waiting for the new offensive coordinator to be hired so he can see the tape," Brown said. Brown said if Ole Miss were to offer he likely would accept. Brown has graduate from high school and can enroll in college in January.
USC #1 With Georgia Receiver
USC can expect a commitment from WR E.J. Adams (6-0 188) of Suwanee, GA when he makes his official visit January 7th. "I love South Carolina with what they've got going on with their new coaches," Adams said. Adams has visited Kentucky and has offers from the Gamecocks and Wildcats. This season he caught 41 passes for 700 yards and 8 touchdowns and scored a total of 15 touchdowns.
Atlanta Teammates Will Visit USC
Atlanta Douglass teammates OL Jason Hill (6-5 245) and DE Roderick Battle (6-4 240) have scheduled January 7th official visits with USC. Hill confirmed the trips saying USC assistant Rick Stockstill just recently started recruiting the pair who have already made verbal commitments...Hill to North Carolina and Battle to Georgia. As for his commitment to the Tar Heels, Hill says it's a soft one. "It's not strong as the internet puts it," Hill said. "I'm still up for grabs." Hill will visit either Duke or Vanderbilt January 14th and North Carolina on the 21st.
USC Still Evaluating Sweeney
USC remains interested in QB Lee Sweeney (6-4 215) of Lebanon but has not made him an offer. USC recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. contacted Sweeney's coach 2-3 days ago to reaffirm the interest and said the staff was about to watch film on Sweeney. Sweeneyi has offers from Hawaii, Louisville, Troy and Arizona State. He will visit Arizona State January 7th and Louisville on the 14th. He will also set a date with Troy.

Well...last I heard was that CJ Barber may enroll, but it doesn't look good as of now. He is now thinking of going to JUCO.
when did he graduate from high school and how much eligibility would he have left?

He has 5 to play 4 right now. He doesn't have the grades to enroll at USC yet and he's been sitting on his butt instead of enrolling at Jr. College.
gotcha, lack of proper motivation huh? I guess we've all been there but it's time to grow up sometime and be a man!.....

BINGO! I think that's why Spurrier hasn't gone after him either. It shows a lack of work ethic.
Yeah, I've been pleasantly suprised by SOS, he only goes after athletes that will qualify academically and will give 100% to his philosophies. Some coaches will take "projects," but not SOS, he will only take players who are ready to win now! I am definately enjoying SOS's attitude toward football here.....

barber graduated in 2004. the same year i did and the year after Ko simpson. he is a good ball player but looks to me like he is slacking a little with his grades. he needs to straighten himself out if he wants to play ball again.

I'm not familiar with that game. I will have to check it out. When I had free time, I used to go watch a lot of the HS games and keep track of recruits and "grade" them so to speak.

oh its a big game. this past year we had 11 thousand people in the stands. match up between the #1 and #2 team in the state. and #15 and #20 something teams in the country. both undefeated playing for the region championship and the #1 seed in the playoffs. northwestern won that game 14-9 but my alma mater rock hill high met them in the 3rd round of the playoffs and let me say revenge is oh soo sweet. needless to say my school whent on to be beat northwestern 7-6 to play for the state championship, which we won also. Rock hill high has won the state championship 2-3 years. the last time they won it was with Ko simpson and a tennessee volunteer by the name of jonethon heffney on the roster!
Florida OL Still Visiting USC
OL Danny Tolley (6-5 301) of Wesley Chapel, FL is still set to visit USC, although he hasn't heard from the Gamecocks in a few weeks. "The last coach I talked to was coach Latina, and he's gone now, so I really don't know. But I am still set to visit there on January 21st," Tolley said. Tolley has been offered by South Florida and has a visit set with the Bulls on January 14th. He said if the Gamecocks do offer, he will still weigh both schools before deciding.

Walker Still Planning USC Trip
LB Dakota Walker (6-4 225) of Mays Landing, NJ has made official visits to Purdue, North Carolina and Tennessee. He will visit USC January 14th and Virginia Tech on the 21st. Walker says he does not have a favorite and won't make a decision until he completes his visits.
Matthews Has First Offer
WR Zearrick Matthews (5-11 175) of Greenwood has picked up an offer from SC State. That's his first offer. He has set an official visit with State for January 14th. He is also drawing interest from USC, Maryland, North Carolina and Tennessee.
All Even With Hannah
Six schools remain in the running for TE Jonathan Hannah (6-5 250) of Hope Mills, NC and he says there is no favorite...all are even. Hannah has visited Clemson and Virginia Tech and will visit USC January 14th and probably North Carolina on the 21st. He is also looking at Penn State or Georgia for a visit. Hannah feels North Carolina has been showing the strongest interest. He was called by USC recruiter Rick Stockstill Tuesday night.
LaFell Still Working Out Visits
WR Brandon LaFell (6-3 175) of Houston visited Arizona, Missouri and Nebraska before December and is trying to decide on his two January visits. He's got Oklahoma State down for January 14th but he says that's not a sure thing. He's also looking at USC, Miami, Florida and Michigan State for a visit. He will decide on his final visits next week after he gets a look at his basketball schedule.
USC Checking On Taylor
LB Quentin Taylor (6-1 220) of Apopka, FL had an offer from the old USC staff and is waiting to hear from the new staff if the offer is still on the table. Taylor said Gamecock recruiter John Hunt visited his school before the break to gather information. Taylor, who claims over 20 offers, has visited West Virginia and will make Alabama one of his January trips. He's also looking at Ole Miss for a visit. Among is other offers are Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.
Cooper Still Plans USC Commitment
LB Keon Cooper (6-3 235) of Memphis talked with USC recruiter Ron Cooper this week. Cooper has not been offered by the Gamecocks but he expects to be when he visits January 14th and he says he still plans to commit when offered. Cooper has offers from Southern Miss and Missouri. He is scheduled to visit Southern Miss January 21st.
Arkansas DB Interests USC
USC has contacted DB Kevin Thornton (6-2 913) of Little Rock, AR and might bring him in for an official visit. Thornton says he's been contacted twice by Gamecock assistant Madre Hill, the last time just before the holiday break. Thornton has an offer from Arkansas and will visit there January 28th. He is also drawing interest from Memphis, North Carolina, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Alabama. He does not have a favorite. This season Thornton had 43 tackles and 8 interceptions. He had 82 tackles with 10 picks as a junior.
Taylor Still Has USC Interest
ATH Lucas Taylor (6-0 180) of Lafayette, LA was a hot USC prospect before the coaching change. He had scheduled a visit with the Gamecocks for January 14th. He says he's not heard from the new staff but is still interested in the Gamecocks. Taylor has visited Auburn and Tennessee and will visit Florida January 7th. He's also looking at Oklahoma State for a visit. Taylor, who rushed for 539 yards in one game, finished the season with 1500 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. He also passed for 550 yards and 5 scores.
USC Tops List For Georgia WR
WR Carlos Thomas (6-1 182) of Atlanta says that USC tops his list of potential schools. Ohio State, Florida and LSU are also in the mix. Thomas is expecting an in-home visit from USC assistant Steve Spurrier Jr. on Jan. 3rd and he has a visit set with the Gamecocks for Jan. 28th. "LSU has dropped down on my list (because of the coaching change), and Ohio State has told me I could play both ways for them. South Carolina wants me as a receiver, " Thomas said. "I would say USC is at the top because of that." He currently doesn't have any visit set with Florida, but is still considering the Gators, who want him as a receiver as well. Thomas originally committed to Georgia Tech in September, but de-committed saying that Tech just wasn't the place for him.
NC State Moves In On Washington
DB Michael Washington (6-3 211) of Allendale-Fairfax has been favoring the in-state schools in Clemson and USC. Now a third school has moved into the picture in NC State. "They have been telling me that I have a real good shot at playing next year as a freshman, so I'm really looking hard at that right now," Washington said. Washington's only official visit currently is with the Tigers on Jan. 14th. His offer still stands from USC, but he is still in the process of setting an official visit with the Gamecocks. Two other schools are also talking with Washington. Georgia has not offered, but have been calling more, and Vanderbilt has indicated they want to offer, but need for Washington to up his SAT scores, something he is in the process of doing. Washington totalled 98 tackles this past season with 1 INT and 10 passes broken up.

Coleman Wants USC Visit
