Hannah's Letter Is Coming
By Phil Kornblut
DE Jonathan Hannah (6-5 250) of Hope Mills, NC did sign this morning with USC after backing off his commitment to Virginia Tech according to his coach Randy Ledford. Hannah's letter of intent has not reached USC yet but his coach said there's nothing to worry about. "It's good to go," Ledford said. According to the coach, Hannah starting rethinking things a couple of days ago. "He had committed to Virginia Tech," Ledford said. "I knew the day before yesterday he was starting to hedge on that. It came down to the Carolinas (USC & UNC)." Ledford said Hannah has left school for the day and is expected to fax his LOI to USC this afternoon.

Whaddup Waldo, I'm not exactly an SECTalk.com Elder but I've been here long enough to know that if there's anything Gamecock-related you want to know about sports-wise...this is the last stop, my friend. ;) You need not look any further on all things but real-time scores.

Welcome, have a seat, crack a brew, sit back and watch 'em roll in. :D

And yes Del, I agree...couldn't possibly ask for better given a recruiting period of just over two months; it should be the story of the recruiting season, actually. Avery Atkins signs with us and I'll be forced to take the rest of the week off...i know it's a 5% chance at best but hey, I had that dream. ;) LOL

;) Oh, I've passed the link on to quite a few people...my older brother went to Carolina too, he lives in Charleston still so he fills me in a little here and there but he's not a die-hard need-to-know-more-more-MORE like me. He knows if Carolina wins or loses and all the studs but I like knowing who's on the line, who's on special teams and who the nickel back is. When I see us score a TD, I look at the key block as well as who carried the three guys into the end zone to cap the run...lol see? I'm a FAN. rofl

That's why I appreciate all the work you put in bro....these are exciting times we're rushing into. All those wants and wishes that USC reach the level we all know it's capable of are turning into realizations right before our eyes. And I'm LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT!! :D

I'm wondering the same thing. He said he would "shock the world" but I hate to be the one to break it to him but signing with Florida or Florida St would shock no one.
I'm more excited now about next football season than I have been in a very long time. I just hope the coaching staff can get every ounce of talent out of these recruits and I have no reason to doubt they will. GO GAMECOCKS!

Part of me is cheering wildly that this puts more of an importance on getting OL Quentin Brown in now. Athletes are fun to watch but the line of scrimmage must be controlled in order to win so you can't have enough good OL.

Stockstill Saves Day With Hannah
By Phil Kornblut
USC recruiter Rick Stockstill would not settle for a no from DE Jonathan Hannah (6-5 250) of Hope Mills, NC. That's why Hannah shocked the college football recruiting world today and signed with the Gamecocks and not Virginia Tech. Stockstill was the lone recruiter for Hannah and relentlessly pursued him even after Hannah committed to Virginia Tech January 24th. According to a source familiar with Hannah's recruiting, Stockstill unleashed a phone and mail bombardment of Hannah finally getting him turned a few days ago. Hannah actually considered North Carolina along with USC after deciding not to sign with Virginia Tech. But Stockstill's persistance paid off for the Gamecocks with one of their biggest Signing Day surprises in years.

Some of those guy may end up on the OL.

We redshirted "7" OL's last year and we have a total of 15 on the roster currently. :D

BTW: We (USC) are pretty much done for the day. Clemson as of now has 23 LOI's and you have to figure that given their rep, at least 4-5 won't qualify.

That's one thing I liked about Spurrier. He went after kids that would definitely qualify so we wouldn't waste our time.:)

We got Steve Spurrier, what appears to be an excellent staff along with him, and a top-25 recruiting class to boot. Just imagine what Steve can pull in NEXT YEAR!

Now, after all this is over, maybe we can start ANOTHER thread where we can talk about who will have immediate playing time, who will have the most impact, etc.

Ok guys, in my joy at the wonderous day, I feel the need to say a couple of things to all my Carolina brothers, and sisters. It makes me very happy to see all you Carolina fans here, so early in 2005, keeping up to the minute reports on this recruiting, thanks to the hard work of Del. I am 34, and this is the FIRST time in my life I have ever kept up with this, thanks again to Del for inviting me here a while back. If anyone cannot see the future of Carolina coming together now, you have to be a blind man. Thanks to Lou, and the recruiting he did for us before, Steve has been able to go out this year and bring in the skill position players HE needs to win. He has done that IMO. Now, we all need to let these kids know how happy we are to have them, let these coaches know how happy we are to have them, and the players that are already here, let them know we have their back as well. There is a bright new era about to begin in Carolina, with pigskins flying all over WB. A lot of winning is attitude, and looking over this board there are plenty of us with that attitude. We all know Spurrier has that attitude. We need to spread that all over Carolina, AND LETS TAKE THIS THING TO THE PROMISE LAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO COCKS!!

Tom (sc): BUZZ, Can bowden get it done at Clemson? Or is it going to take a big name coach to bring back the tigers to the level of the 80's and early 90's? How is their class?

SportsNation Signing Day Buzz: (3:18 PM ET ) Kinda feels like the Ol' Ball Coach is stealing the headlines in the Palmetto State.

It must be that much more painful to have an 'unbiased' source like ESPN turn the knife like that on a Clemson fan. How sweet it is, hehe.

And I agree, we as fans need to get out of this 'here we go again' attitude when things start to go wrong. The two teams I'm most passionate about are the Red Sox and the Gamecocks, so I've certainly been surrounded by fans with that attitude for years. It really does drain the fanbase and I'm sure it affects the players as well. I personally think that we're going to look much better on the field next year, but even if we don't (*knock on wood*) we have to realize that this was Year 1 of the Fun n' Gun in Columbia. I think if we struggle next season we're going to come out in 2006 and really shock some people with how greatly improved the offense will be. The Gamecocks are going to be a force to be reckoned with, and once we reach the upper echelon of college football I think we will be there to stay.

Agree 100%. I am not trying to say we are suddenly holier than though, but we are beginning something very bright here in Columbia. I truly believe this team will have a very different outlook on things this season, partly because I dont think Spurrier will accept anything less. If you don't believe you can win, your not going too. Especially against the big guns. Anyone who has done their homework on Spurrier knows one thing about him. He HATES to lose. He made a comment a few years back that said, "I am not a good loser, and I don't ever want to get good at it". That is the attitude we have to have. We cannot go into this season with hesitation. We have to go in full steam ahead. Anyone who does not believe game 1, on ESPN, even though it may be against Central Florida, does not mean a great deal to Steve Spurrier is wrong. He wants the nation to know daddy is home!! And he will want Ga. to pay special attention to that. :)

Whew-

I just read all the posts that I missed today and it took me 45 minutes! Great surprise with Hannah.

I am 47 and never had this much interest in recruiting before. Thanks to everyone that made this so much fun.

Del, I cannot believe that you kept Hannah a secret from us. I would say shame on you, but you obviously let your faithfulness to your sources win out over your chance to spill the beans. That's why you have been entrusted by the "football gods" to be their messenger.

We will be listening for more!

I was told about OJ about 2 1/2 weeks ago and I was told about Hannah early this morning.

As for OJ, I was told not to say anything for a little while. Then if you noticed, I started dropping hints. Only within the last week did I say he was definitely ours. LOL! For about a week, I was trying to tell GatorNation that OJ was not a lock for Florida, but he didn't listen to me. :(

As for Hannah, I was told not to say a SINGLE word until it was released. They wanted to surprise the USC fan base. :)

When I give my word, I keep it. If a man doesn't have his honor/honesty, what good is he?

The chat has been going on all day, so you'll have to scroll down to 3:18 PM to see the quotes that I posted.

I have to agree. I don't expect miracles next season because the players have to learn an entirely new system. Not only that, some of these guys will surely be adjusting to starting and playing in the SEC. I do believe Spurrier is going to be a winner at USC and he is the type of coach that can right this ship for good. THE PAST DOES NOT EQUAL THE FUTURE! Go Gamecocks!!

Wow, you're getting me way too excited about this season GT. I was focusing entirely on the talent, but now you've made me think about the fact that Spurrier is going to be able to start scheming with few unknowns left for next season. Assuming everyone academically qualifies, Newton is really going to be the only significant question mark.

Yeah sorry. I am getting me way too excited as well!! :D I am sure, based on what some of the recruits have said, that his plan has been coming together for a while. Now he can put those final magical touches on it. As far as Newton, I agree. But, knowing Spurrier, that is probably not as much a question mark to him as it is to us right now. :) By the way, my birthday is Sept. 5. Come on birthday!! That means we should be 1-0 by then!!

Well...Like I said..

I didn't mean to decieve anyone about Murdock & Hannah. I just value my word of honor and didn't want to burn a bridge. They asked me not to say ANYTHING about Hannah and just wait a week or so before mentioning Murdock. They made me promise so I honored that promise. Now I can talk about them all I want. Pageland DB Could Be USC Walk-On
By Conan Gasque
Signing day was not a big day for Central Pageland DB Ray Davis (6-2 180), but he still may end up at a big-time program. According to Central head coach Joey Mangum, Davis could walk on at USC. Mangum said that USC recruiter David Reaves has expressed interest in Davis. "He likes him, but he said that he doesn't have quite enough speed." Davis runs a 4.7 in the forty. He has no offers and is currently waiting on an offer from a division 1-AA school. Mangum said that if no schools offer, he may contact Reaves to find out if Davis can become a preferred walk on with the Gamecocks. Davis has had contact with Coastal Carolina, Tusculum, Gardner Webb, North Greenville, Livingston and Newberry.

USC signees: A closer look
More information on players signing Wednesday with South Carolina:
Yvan Banag
SS, 5-10, 190
Buford (Ga.) H.S.
Resume: No. 90 in-state prospect by Scout.com … born in France and moved to U.S. for middle school … played three years, starting the final two for the state's 1A champs … also offered by Memphis, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest … pronounced yuh-VAHN buh-NAG.
Stats: 88 tackles, 4 INTs as senior; also rushed for 915 yards, 8 TDs.
Outlook: Although Banag packs a wallop, he will have to redshirt while learning how to defend the pass and move in space. Will appear on special teams before defense.

Tommy Beecher
QB, 6-1, 205
Concord (N.C). H.S.
Resume: Led team to 15-1 record and 3A state title as senior … 31-6 as a starter … played on the same middle school team as Byrnes transfer and USC signee Freddie Brown … also offered by Richmond.
Stats: 3,668 passing yards, 42 TDs as senior; 2,586 yards, 28 TDs, 7 INTs as junior.
Outlook: A definite redshirt unless injuries further deplete USC's already thin QB depth.

Mychal Belcher
DB, 6-1, 170
Dorman H.S.
Resume: No 21 in-state, SuperPrep; … Shrine Bowler … also offered by N.C. State and Maryland.
Stats: 2,381 yards passing, 14 TDs as a senior; rushed for 500 yards, 6 TDs.
Outlook: Recruited as a cornerback, Belcher will likely redshirt to add weight and figure out what position suits him best -- some USC coaches feel he might be better suited at free safety, and there's a chance he could even get a look at receiver.

Kerry Bonds
DE, 6-3, 232
Lincoln H.S., Tallahassee, Fla.
Resume: No. 45 DE, No. 90 in-state, Rivals.com; … offered by Maryland, W. Virginia and Louisville.
Stats: Played mostly offensive guard in high school.
Outlook: Will need a redshirt to develop. Has pass-rushing skills but is a raw project.

Freddie Brown
WR, 6-3, 200
Byrnes H.S.
Resume: No. 49 WR, No. 14 in-state, Rivals.com; No. 16 in-state, No. 98 WR, Scout.com; No. 15 in-state, SuperPrep; … North-South all-star … also offered by Kentucky and Wake Forest.
Stats: 68 catches, 865 yards, 14 TDs as a senior; 86 catches, 1,459 yards, 12 TDs as a junior.
Outlook: The good news is USC needs plenty of receivers and needs them now. The bad news is he'll have to distinguish himself from several other veterans (Sidney Rice, David Smith, D'von Hill) in his mold.

Jared Cook
WR, 6-5, 210
North Gwinnett H.S., Suwanee, Ga.
Resume: No. 40 WR, No. 24 in-state, Rivals.com; No. 35 in-state, No. 49 WR, Scout.com … also offered by Ohio State, Auburn, Mississippi State and Missouri.
Stats: 32 catches, 800 yards, 10 TDs as a senior.
Outlook: Some analysts consider him the sleeper of their class, others one of the headliners. His speed will dictate whether he plays, although there's some thought he could wind up at tight end.

Brent Davis
LB, 6-2, 205
Mainland H.S., Daytona Beach, Fla.
Resume: Also offered by N.C. State, UNC, Purdue and W. Virginia.
Stats: 120-plus tackles as a senior; 115 tackles, 5 sacks as a junior.
Outlook: Probably will redshirt to get bigger.

Mike Davis
RB, 5-10, 212
Columbia H.S.
Resume: No. 22 RB, No. 10 in-state, Rivals.com; No. 87 overall, No. 11 RB, No. 2 in-state, Scout.com; No. 3 in-state, SuperPrep … also offered by Clemson, Maryland, Kentucky and UNC … Shrine Bowler … has reportedly qualified for his diploma and transferred to Glenforest School in Columbia to take extra classes.
Stats: 2,042 yards and 26 TDs as a senior; 2,250 yards and 25 TDs as a junior.
Outlook: Will likely compete with fellow frosh Bobby Wallace for third-string carries behind Demetris Summers and Daccus Turman.

Jonathan Hannah
TE/DE, 6-4, 255
Hope Mills, N.C. (South View)
Resume: No. 99 overall, No. 4 TE, No. 6 in-state, Rivals.com; No. 9 in-state, No. 5 TE, Scout.com … Shrine Bowler … all-state in football and basketball as a junior … dad, Joe, played at N.C. State … decommitted from Va. Tech, also offered by UNC, N.C. State, FSU, Tennessee and Clemson.
Stats: 20 catches for 413 yards, 3 TDs as a senior
Outlook: Will begin his career at tight end and could well be Spurrier's next Ben Troupe. But USC could also be enticed to fill a bigger need at defensive end.

Brandon Isaac
S. 6-2, 185
Georgia Military College/Blackville-Hilda H.S., Blackville
Resume: No. 51 juco, SuperPrep … 2002 Shrine Bowler … also offered by Georgia, Louisville and Utah … enrolled in January.
Stats: 25 tackles, one INT
Outlook: Could get a shot at starting strong safety or serve as Ko Simpson's backup at free safety.

Lemuel Jeanpierre
DL, 6-4, 255
Timber Creek H.S., Orlando, Fla.
Resume: No. 74 in-state, No. 70 DT, Scout.com; No. 45 DT, No. 94 in-state, Rivals.com … first name pronounced la-MULE … also offered by Louisville, Ga. Tech, Northwestern and Wake Forest.
Stats: 96 tackles, 9 sacks as a junior.
Outlook: Given USC's glut of defensive tackles, should redshirt unless he could contribute at end. A candidate to be moved to offensive line as well.

Jarriel King
DE, 6-6, 273
North Charleston H.S.
Resume: No. 27 in-state, Scout.com … first name pronounced juh-REL … North-South all-star … also offered by Clemson and Auburn.
Stats: 86 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 3 blocked kicks
Outlook: Tremendously raw, but has a good motor and could be the steal of their class. Will need some teaching but could wind up at either offensive line or defensive tackle as well.

Shea McKeen
TE, 6-6, 265
The Hun School, Princeton, N.J.
Resume: Also offered by Michigan State, Florida, UNC, Miami and Purdue.
Stats: 8 sacks as senior; had 3 TDs as tight end
Outlook: A tad heavy for tight end, which makes him a prime defensive line or offensive guard candidate. One of the more likely players to contribute early.

Kenny McKinley
WR, 6-0, 166
South Cobb H.S., Mableton, Ga.
Resume: No. 38 in-state, No. 47 WR, Scout.com; No. 54 athlete, No. 29 in-state, Rivals.com; No. 38 athlete, SuperPrep … also offered by UNC, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt.
Stats: Rushed for 400 yards, 8 TDs as quarterback; threw for 1,575 yards, 12 TDs.
Outlook: Was recruited by Lou Holtz strictly to play receiver and can deliver much-needed athleticism at the position. Doesn't have blazing speed but is extremely quick and elusive.

O.J. Murdock
WR, 6-0, 178

Stats: 2,018 rushing yards, 33 TDs as senior; 1,300 yards, 18 TDs as a junior.
Outlook: Recruited as a running back, but most think he'll slide to safety. Either way, could see time as a backup as a freshman.

Marvin Sapp
LB, 6-1, 210
Sandalwood H.S., Jacksonville, Fla.
Resume: No. 48 in-state, No. 56 LB, Scout.com; No. 35 in-state, SuperPrep … first cousin of former Clemson QB/LB Patrick Sapp, second cousin of NFL standout defensive lineman Warren Sapp … first-team all-state … Jacksonville Times-Union Defensive Player of the Year … decommitted from Ga. Hickory (N.C.) H.S.

Stats: 11-15 FGs, 46-48 PATs, 98 percent of kickoffs were touchbacks.

Banneker H.S., Atlanta, Ga.
Resume: No. 83 overall, No. 8 in-state, No. 10 CB, Scout.com; No. 3 in-state, SuperPrep … brother, Levon, plays WR at Ga. Tech … decommitted from Ga. Tech, also offered by Florida, Ohio State, LSU and Ole Miss.
Stats: 1,000 yards of total offense, 9 total TDs; 20 catches for 411 yards, 5 TDs as a junior.

Maryville (Tenn.) H.S., Maryville, Tenn.
Resume: No. 13 in-state, Scout.com; No. 17 in-state, SuperPrep … state 4A player of the year … led team to 15-0 record, state title … 43-1 as a starter … guided team to title as a sophomore as well … first committed to UNC in August, also offered by Clemson.

Stats: 1,903 rushing yards, 22 TDs as senior; also had 18 catches for 215 yards, 3 TDs.
Outlook: Deemed dynamic but too small for most Division I-A systems, but this one may be a perfect fit. Considering Texas Tech and Oklahoma have had success with skill players his size, he could play early.

Jeremy Ware
CB, 5-11, 185
Lehigh H.S., Fort Myers, Fla.
Resume: Also offered by Michigan State, Ga. Tech, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Stats: 40 tackles, 7 INTs as a senior.

Resume: No. 24 in-state, Scout.com; No. 24 in-state, Rivals.com … also offered by Va. Tech and Tennessee.
Stats: 103 tackles, 8 sacks as a senior

Butler (Kan.) Community College, Citra, Fla.
Resume: No. 49 juco, SuperPrep … member of 2003 national juco champs … has three years to play three …. also offered by Kansas State, Kansas, Memphis and Texas Christian.
Stats: 33 tackles, 1 INT, 3 forced fumbles.
Outlook: A safety in junior college, he may need time to adjust to the move to outside linebacker. Having spring practice to get acquainted should expedite this transition.

Damien Wright

Resume: No. 18 in-state, No. 38 S, Scout.com; No. 32 S, No. 17 in-state, Rivals.com; No. 13 in-state, SuperPrep … Shrine Bowler … also recruited by Ga. Tech, N.C. State and Vanderbilt.
Stats: 147 tackles, 5 sacks as a senior.
Outlook: Like Banag, he'll be an outside linebacker learning to roam as a strong safety, which will probably require a year on the scout squad.

Brandyn Young
CB/RB, 6-0, 180
Tucker (Ga.) H.S.
Resume: No. 37 athlete, No. 33 in-state, Rivals.com; No. 37 in-state, No. 47 RB, Scout.com; No. 37 in-state, SuperPrep … also offered by Maryland and Ga. Tech.

I'm here for the duration too! LOL Friends came over & we jumped on the XBox...I gave them some free ESPN College Hoops 2K5 lessons and filled 'em in on our class and theirs (Michigan, go figure) as much as I knew.

But my plan is to spend the majority of my college football season right here on this site. Good people all around here and though I've converted my share of people into USC fans, very few are able to really have a conversation about the team and how they're looking. Knowing I'll have these forums to come to makes me all that much more anxious for the spring game to get here so we can really see what we have here.

Think i'm heading off for the night now though...you guys are right, i bet there are a lot of Carolina fans out there who are going to be sleeping very very well this night, every single one with an easy smile on their face. :)

I predict that our man behind center next fall will be Blake Mitchell. He hasn't had the chance to show us much or to develop any consistency. If truly everyone is on equal ground at this time, I think that he will step up and show us what he can do.

Let's definitely stay together. This group has been able to have a civilized discussion throughout. All of us our insanly dedicated to our beloved Gamecocks and are interested in finding out all the information that is available about them. (BY the way gamecocksportscenter has a 30 minute audio of the Steve Spurrier press conference. It is very interesting.) Spurrier did a great job. I must gloat for a second because I did call the big surprise, didn't know what it would be but I had a feeling the ole ball coach had a NSD surprise for us and SURPRISE Hannah signs with USC!! Sorry about that. I am going to bed now because I am dead tired, see ya'll tommorrow morning where I will catch up on what ya'll posted!

Since I'm in Hawaii, it's still very early for me. All of you guys are in the bed. Yes, it is a great day to be a Gamecock. Hopefully we'll start to see the culture change that Coach Holtz kept talking about.

I keep telling people, teams like UT and UGA better hope a SOS team is not up by 16 points in the 3rd qtr. If so, those teams will not come back. I'm sure Coach Richt and Fulmer are telling their teams the same thing.

It was great to hear SOS say in his conference today about how hard the QB's, Summers and the team are working in the off season. Hopefully our QB's will come along ways during the winter workouts.

I am going to start a "Spring" tread later on...

Maybe we can start a thread of 2006 prospects. I know some people don't get into recruiting until December, but I love to follow it all year long. I try to learn as much as I can about players before the May evaluation period. Of course, May is where I seem to learn the most. I have already been looking at the databases and I'm already excited about the class of 2006!

Del, thanks for telling me about this board!
