I have not heard anything - think its deadlocked between us and UFA. He's probably waiting to see who both teams sign before he decides. I would be surprised if we don't have decisions out of most these kids by Friday. 3 and 4 star players can't afford to wait until NSD.

Same here. I think he's watching right now. Personally, I wouldn't count him out just yet. :D

Murdock Names His Leader
Throughout the recruiting campaign WR O.J. Murdock (6-0 179) of Tampa has remained mum on the subject of a favorite. Monday night he revealed his inner feelings. "It's either Florida or South Carolina," Murdock said. "I'm trying to stay open minded and make my decision after this weekend. Both schools are the same with the way they have their offense. The decision would have to be based on playing time and the depth chart. I am leaning towards one way. I'm trying to make sure it will be the right place after I come back from Florida. I'm leaning towards the Gators." Murdock will visit Florida this weekend. He visited USC on the 14th. Tonight he talked on the phone with USC recruiter David Reaves who will visit him Thursday. Murdock's mom will accompany him on his visit to Florida. She did not make the trip to USC.

Reaves In Jersey Tuesday
TE Shea McKeen (6-6 265) of Mays Landing, NJ has been committed to USC and remains firm with his commitment. McKeen is also close friends with USC target LB Dakota Walker who might have a decision Tuesday between USC, Virginia Tech and Tennessee. McKeen will get a visit from USC recruiter David Reaves Tuesday and it can be safely assumed that Reaves will visit Walker, too. A visit by a recruiter on the day a player is to make a decision certainly stands as a positive sign for USC in the Walker case.

I am not as worried about WR's as most people seem to be. I would LOVE to get Murdock, but even if we dont we will be in good shape. We have Thomas, Rice if he can stay healthy, Whiteside, Boyd can play receiver if he needs to, McKeen, etc. When Boyd came out of highschool he was listed as a 3-star safety. He has proven to be very valuable as a back or receiver. With the quality on the defensive side of the ball I think some of those will spill over into the offense. We have enough talent to be good in all areas of the game.

I have to agree. Sid Rice, Newton at WR or flanker, David Smith, Travis Lee, and Whiteside -- plus the freshmen SS has already brought in give him more than enough to work with next year.

I am more worried about who is going to throw it than who is going to catch it.

Del I don't know if we will get OJ or not. He is taking his mother to the hometown school. If trends follow like the rest of these guys they do exactly the opposite of what they have told the press. he comes to USC. :D

Sure, positive attitudes make for better reading but this is a forum for discussion. Most people in a forum say what is on their mind, not what everyone else wants them to say. Just because everyone is not loudly proclaiming that every recruit that was on SC's radar is going to committ to SC doesn't mean the person is trying to be negative. It simply means that is how they feel. I don't think we'll get O.J. Murdock and that is just how I feel. Besides, what I think isn't going to change anything anyway. It's all gonna shake out however it's gonna shake out regardless.

Please don't take this post as hateful or mean-spirited in any way. I am not intending it as such. Thanks.

I come to this site in hopes of gaining insight on USC recruiting news. Good or bad I am trying to get the fastest credible info on our prospective players. This site has done a great Job of doing just that. I have found that most members on this site do a little research on a prospective recruit before expressing a "feeling", it helps everybody weed out rumors.

Ten players from one state out of 279 total HS athletes is not bad. I realize that not all states are football states, still, with 50 states and only 279 SuperPreps - that averages out to 5 to 6 per state. SC had 10.
We MUST do a better job at keeping talent in state. Hopefully, we can soon be selective enough to decide who we will choose and let other schools get our leftovers! :)

Not necessarily a horrible thing IMO. This opens up a scholie for another incoming athlete. I feel that in SS offense - one year would not be enough to learn and carry us through. I would rather invest in the future.

I don't think it's over for OJ Murdock. We have an in-home visit scheduled with him. I still think that we are going to get LB Dakota Walker.

As for the left over scolly's, I do not think they are going to be filled unless we have some "silent" committments. We will just use those left over scolly's next year. :D

*Confirmed*

Apparently Urban Meyer & Charlie Strong of Florida are using some "dirty" recruiting tactics. According to sources, when Meyer met with OJ Murdock, both him and Strong told him that no one can win at USC.

I find that rather funny coming from someone (Meyer) that's never coached in a tough conference like the SEC. I also find it funny that Spurrier is the one that made Florida into the powerhouse it is.

Paybacks are a b***h!

but i would say about 100-125 of those athletes come from florida, california, and texas and michigan alone. maybe del could fill us in on all that stuff but 10 seems to be kinda a small number to me

never did care to much for charlie strong. Glad he left. As for Meyer, your debut comes in a matter of months Mr Utah. Welcome to a real conference. They are loaded out the ass with talent, and they still want to do things like that? Maybe because they are a little frightened as to the way the SEC is about to swing. I hate Georgia and Tennesee, but I wish them 100 point victories over that Florida team. Man, I better quit before I get TOO fired up.

I hope that is true (concerning beating GA and FLA) but then again I hope it isn't true. I would most like to beat Clemson. They have owned us the past few years even though I believe our teams was the more talented out of the two. I believe we were just outcoached. There offensive staff found a way to dismantle our defense and our offense seems befuttled by there atrotious defense. I mean come on how do you lose to a team that got manhandled by DUKE!!!!

I do want to make one comment though. I too am a little angry over Sledge's quick departure but remember we stole recruits too. GA-Tech 2 (Carlos Thomas and Sapp), UNC (Cade Thompson) and Maryland (Brandon Young). So if you really look at it we can't be too angry because we were more then happy to take these recruits. Middleton WR Murdock Weighing Options
A Tribune staff report
Published: Jan 25, 2005

Middleton WR O.J. Murdock didn't make an official visit this weekend and is still weighing his two finalists - South Carolina and Florida. The Gators will make the final pitch to Murdock this weekend on his official visit to Gainesville. Murdock visited South Carolina two weekends ago and came away impressed.

``I'm just waiting for this weekend to see what happens,'' said Murdock, who is currently ranked the 10th-best wide receiver prospect in the nation by Rivals.com.

One reason Murdock is leaning toward those schools is because both coaches have told him he also will be able to run track there.

``Both schools have outstanding track programs and that's important to me,'' Murdock said. Murdock was Hillsborough County's leader with 58 receptions for 831 yards.

Curtis Frye should be calling this guy and telling him that USC won a NC in track not too long ago. C'mon Mr. Frye, help the football team out and pick-up the phone.

Eric Sledge apparently bought it....and this doesn't surprise me at all. It's always the "nice guys" (i.e. MEYER) that surprise you with how low they can go.

As for Charlie Strong...I hope he remembers fondly for the rest of his days how well he did in the only head coaching opportunity he'll ever be given in the SEC (that debacle vs. Miami in the Peach Bowl). 0-1 with a 27-10 blowout isn't exactly a winning tradition itself....

Visored visionary visits: Spurrier stops by Maryville
2005-01-27
by John Brice
of The Daily Times Staff

Eight years ago, Florida rolled into Neyland Stadium, blitzed to a 35-0 lead on second-ranked Tennessee and ensured the Vols' highest national ranking in 40 years would be short-lived.

It would be a Saturday afternoon better suited for hoisting umbrellas than pigskins, since a driving rain saturated the Shields-Watkins Field. But it didn't stop Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel from throwing for four touchdowns, a performance that spurred his run to the Heisman Trophy and his team's run to the national title.

Peyton Manning, in a losing effort, chucked the ball 65 times for 492 yards and four scores.

But the pass that opened the flood-gates, so to speak, was Weurffel's 35-yard connection to Reidel Anthony on fourth-and-12. In just 19 minutes, 54 seconds, the Gators had dizzied the Vol defense with five touchdowns.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Visored Wonder who patrolled the Gators' sidelines in that game, former coach Steve Spurrier, used a flurry of pen-strokes on a dingy white chalkboard inside the Maryville High School locker room to recreate the play.

Spurrier illustrated exactly how Wuerffel got the UT safety to bite on the up receiver so that he could connect with Anthony near the goal post for the game's first score.

Florida's all-time winningest coach elicited a verbal commitment from Maryville High School's all-time winningest quarterback, Cade Thompson, last week. Thompson will be a part of Spurrier's first recruiting class at South Carolina.

``South Carolina is actually a school that has all the resources and facilities to be a big-time contender in the SEC,'' said Spurrier, who coached the NFL's Washington Redskins for two years before sitting out 2004. ``The stadium (Williams-Brice) holds over 80,000, and the fans buy all the tickets.

``They've got a brand new football weight room, meeting rooms, team rooms. They've got a nice, little indoor place, 70 yards, and field turf.''

And the Gamecocks, Spurrier believes, already have everything in place to win right away.

``I think we've got a lot of good players there now,'' said Spurrier, who replaced the legendary Lou Holtz just days after the end of the 2004 season. ``Really, I think we'll have an excellent recruiting class. We'll sign our full 25 this year, and I think we've got a lot of good players on the way. We're excited about the opportunity there.''

Thompson will officially become a part of that class next Wednesday, an increasingly celebrated offseason day in the college football world reverentially referred to as National Signing Day.

While NCAA rules forbid Spurrier to specifically discuss Thompson until he signs with the Gamecocks, he likens the task at hand in Columbia, S.C., to the one he faced at Florida in 1990.

``You know, there are some similarities. There are some similarities in that South Carolina has not achieved a whole lot,'' said Spurrier, who owns all six SEC titles and the lone national crown for the Florida program. ``Of course, they've never won the Eastern Division or the SEC; they've never finished in the top 10. They won the ACC in 1969. They've got one championship.

``So, we believe these are achievable goals that we can reach. Hopefully, we can get it done.''

Of course, Spurrier likewise recognizes much has changed since his entrance 15 years ago into the league. Spurrier's Gators revolutionized college football with his wide-open, spread-the-field passing attacks.

``Everybody in the SEC is pretty good,'' Spurrier said, adding with a chuckle, ``they pass a lot more now.''

Recruiting guru Jamie Newburg, says:

...Who will fare the best among the 22 schools that made coaching changes? Perhaps South Carolina. New Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier had a rough December in terms of recruiting battles. Immediately after accepting the job, he lost the state's top prospect -- C.J. Byrd (North Augusta, S.C.) -- to Georgia. Then he went after regional big-name quarterbacks like Jonathan Crompton (Waynesville, N.C.), Cameron Sexton (Laurinburg, N.C.) and Joe Cox (Charlotte, N.C.), but couldn't persuade any of them to commit. But the Gamecock coaches kept at it hard, and now they're seeing some fruits of their labor. They recently picked up a few good commitments from wide receiver Jared Cook (Suwannee, Ga.), safeties Gerrod Sinclair (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Yvan Banag (Buford, Ga.), as well as defensive linemen Lemuel Jeanpierre (Orlando, Fla.) and Kerry Bonds (Tallahassee, Fla.). Last week was even bigger, with South Carolina reeling in commitments from linebacker Marvin Sapp (Jacksonville, Fla.), wide receiver Carlos Thomas (College Park, Ga.) and running back Brandyn Young (Tucker, Ga.). The Gamecocks also were able to convince North Carolina quarterback commitment Cade Thompson (Maryville, Tenn.) to switch teams....

Spurrier is already starting to close the doors to this state.

Early Top Five For Junior LB
LB Marcus Jackson (6-0 196) of North Augusta is expected to be one of the state's top prospects in 2005. As a junior, Jackson had 72 tackles with 8 sacks and he returned two fumbles for touchdowns. He played defensive end and linebacker as a junior and is projected as a safety for his senior season as well as college. Jackson says his early top five schools are USC, Clemson, Georgia, Auburn and Florida State.

Raglin Still Favoring Gamecocks
Atlanta DB Richard Raglin (6-2 195), who is scheduled to visit Louisville this weekend, said Thursday that he is favoring USC. "I like the fact that they're in the SEC. I want to play for a school in a major conference." Raglin also said that he's looking for a school where he has a chance to play early. Raglin visited USC on January 14, and he has also been to North Carolina, Tulane and East Carolina. "Everybody's still in it," he said, referring to the five schools on his official visit list. Raglin said that he probably will not have a decision until signing day.

I have been reading this forum now for quite a while and I love the amount of good information that comes from here so I just joined. But the thing that I wanted to voice is that now many recuiting sites are saying that Murdock says that he will commit to UF if all goes well on his visit.

That tends to scare me especially when we have so much invested in him and how much we could use his services.... And I don't doubt for a minute that Meyer is using the whole Eric Sledge thing against us.

"look one of their commits left USC after seeing what we had to offer"....I can hear his voice now. I hope that we can pull this one out, and shove it in his face by letting him catch every TD pass we throw in that USC v. UF game.

Have you heard anything else on him about his possible commit to UF Delo.

I also know that sources can always make mistakes and make you look silly at times. Damn sources! Why can't they always be right! By the way though, those few articles were very interesting. 1. I'm hearing that we have a 50-50 chance of signing Murdock at best. Meyer is going to blow smoke up his butt so we have got to keep this university and his visit here fresh in his memory. A good way to do that is having our Basketball team play a good game. I'll keep everyone updated

2. I told ya that Tommy Beecher was for real. I've seen this kid in action with my own eyes. He's the real deal. He lives about 30 mins from my house. :D

3. pc72687- Nowhere in ANY of my posts did I say Hannah or Ford was a lock. You have me confused with someone else.

4. Beecher got 2 Stars because he slipped under the radar this year. With all of the other high profile QB's coming out of NC (Crompton, Sexton, etc, etc) this year, they just flat out missed this kid.

5. The Dakota Walker deal is real. As you all probably know, I am now not the only one that's saying this. A couple other recruiting websites are now saying this.

Slowly but surely this story is breaking. It appears that WR OJ Murdock had his visit cancelled because he is lacking a core class per Florida's academic standards. From what I am being told, he would still qualify here at USC with his current transcript.

I am also being told that OJ is rather angry at Florida for stringing him along. It appears that he feels that Florida might have kept him on a leash to keep others from recruiting him. He is now looking seriously at a committment to the Gamecocks.

I will be up just about all night until I can get some kind of confirmation on this. Sorry it is taking so long, but these things don't always work the way you want them to work.:)

From an article I read earlier tonight about Spurrier, it sounded like there may be 4 or 5 quarterbacks seeing playing time this year. That included the freshmen. The article stated Spurrier was notorius for playing multiple quarterbacks. I'm not sure if I agree that 4 or 5 may play, but 2 or 3 I guess would be possible. Actually, I think the article listed 3. My, my, my....our new Oscar Meyer weiner sure seems to have the "peeve off people" effect down pat!

Let's see, he steals one of our 'solid committ' recruits somehow (not sure if I ever want to find out how) last week. Now, he goes and strings along another solid WR recruit who's ultimately going to come down between USC and UF.

As if there needed to be any more bulletin board material for Spurrier and USC....this is gonna get fuglier before all is said and done. I'll tell you what, Oscar Meyer weiner down in Gainesville better hope he doesn't develop a reputation for shady recruiting practices right outta the gate like he has through his short tenure so far....SOS will be down in Florida stealing UF's home-state talent even more in years to come if those kids see Meyer as less than genuine.

All I ask for my birthday (February) is Dakota Walker and OJ Murdock. Is that too much to ask? Oh yeah, and world peace would be nice too.

JerryBeeds

It's got nothing to do with his grades. You have to have taken certain core classes to have a certain major. Fla.'s admissions are just a little different from ours. We're already number one in international business. After the new research center opens, we'll be a top 20 public school academically.

yea, every school has certain classes that must be taken in order to get in. its a matter of what is important to the university. that said, i chose usc over more academically reknowned schools such as uga and jmu because i feel this school is on the serious uprise, the atmosphere is great, everyone is friendly, and the girls are hot ;)

For those of you that aren't aware of what's going on, please allow me to tell you a story. Keep in mind, this has not yet been confirmed.

This recruiting tactic by Meyer is deplorable at best. Here's a kid (Murdock) that wants to play football. He narrows his choices down to 2 schools. USC and Florida are his leading schools.

What Meyer is doing/done is string the kid along saying the Gator's really want him while the whole time knowing that there was an 80% chance that he would not qualify under FL academic standards. Does he tell Murdock this? No! You know why? Because if Murdock knew that he wasn't going to qualify, he can begin to go "shopping" so to speak. So Meyer continues to string him along by blowing smoke up his butt and then finally, a few days before NSD, he finally tells Murdock the deal.

Why did he wait so late to tell him? Because about now on average, schools pretty much have their scolly's spoken for and they won't have any room to sign Murdock. So therefore, Murdock's options are limited and he is pretty much forced to sign with Florida and go the prep/JUCO route. This late in the game, esp the big schools have all of their scolly's allotted. That way Meyer keeps him from going to a rival school and gets his prospect.

It's a dirty recruiting tactic by far and it's going to earn Meyer a "BAD" reputation.

JerryBeeds

Del,

What are our odds in, percentage-wise, are our chances of snagging:

D. Walker?
M. Davis?
H. Green?
M. Ford (Though a Bama commit, still visiting 1/28?)?

1. D. Walker is in the bag. There are three (3) different recruiting sources besides me reporting this.

2. Mike Davis was rumored to be commiting to USC, but I have not verified that rumor.

3. Hivera Green is on a visit to VT with his entire family. He is a very longshot!

4. As far as I know, USC has abandoned their recruitment of Mike Ford for academic reasons. (613 SAT to be exact)

No team is out of the picture just yet. If all of this is true, then he could go the "prep" or "JUCO" route to enroll at Florida. The real question is why would you want to????

As for OJ commenting, he hasn't made a comment or released a statement.

I personally don't think FSU is going to make a difference. Murdock himself on numerous occasions said it's between USC & Florida. :D

Well...let's put this into perspective.

1. We have a rumor that's saying he is NOT going to be academically able to enroll at Florida without Prep or JUCO.

2. Taking a visit is NOT going to change the outcome of #1.

3. We still have a shot with this kid. Murdock has spoken about his reservations on the JUCO/Prep route before. :D

Raglin visited USC on January 14, and

Six days left: Where Florida stands
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mark Wheeler

With less than one week left until National Signing Day, the recruiting effort of the Florida Gators is in high gear as the coaching staff prepares to welcome in the last group of visiting prospects in this recruiting cycle. Find out what is in the Gators' plans for the next six days, who their last targets are and what positions they look to fill in this class.

Rivals.com

Jackson canceled his Texas visit
Since the need has been filled and there are no further prospects on the board, quarterback and kicker won't be included in our daily rundown.

Running Back (Need: 0-1)
The Texas site here on Rivals.com is reporting that R.J. Jackson missed his scheduled mid-week visit to Austin because of sickness. However, he is still scheduled to visit the Gators this weekend.

Antone Smith had plenty of good things to say about Urban Meyer and the Gators on Wednesday's Count Down to Signing Day, but he also spoke at length about Miami.

The Odds Are: Obviously the big news is Jackson missing the Texas visit. That has to increase the Gators chances significantly. As of today, I wouldn't call Florida the leader for either of the two remaining backs though.

Wide Receiver (Need: 1-3)
Wednesday we thought that perhaps Lavar Lobdell was off the board, on Thursday we find out that might not be true. Regardless of whether or not he is committed to Miami, he is still visiting Florida this weekend.

That was the good news. The bad news was that I heard, a rumor that O.J. Murdock wouldn't be able to take an official visit. The question marks surrounding his academic situation have been lingering for a while now.

Two weeks ago Mike Hurcomb reported that he was in the 2.3/750 range.

Other than that the news on the receiver front was pretty slow. That should change starting on Sunday with Derrick McPhearson, Brandon LaFell and Lobdell all due in this weekend for sure.

Just to be on the safe side I contacted Carlos Thomas one last time on Thursday to see if there was a chance he was visiting. He said he wasn't and he remains firmly committed to South Carolina.
