Hilton Head OT Likes USC
By Eric Guimaraes
OT Ian Anderson (6-7 305) of Hilton Head Prep says he would strongly consider USC is they were to offer. Anderson, who has only played organized football since his sophomore year, was named to the First Team All-Region Team this past season and hope to make All-State this year. He has no offers at this time but is receiving interest from BC, Vanderbilt, USC, Kentucky, and Michigan State. He has camped at USC and really likes the school. "They have great facilities and I love their coaches. I have some friends up there too. I love the campus and Columbia is not too far away from Hilton Head." Anderson says that BC and Vanderbilt are showing the most interest in him right now. He keeps in contact with Shane Beamer of USC and Joker Phillips of Kentucky. Anderson says if either school were to offer him, it would be tough to turn down. "I'd like to play in the southeast for a big school. Playing at Williams-Brice would be a thrill." He feels he is a strong pass blocker and is working on improving his strength and speed. He runs a 5.7 40. He does not have a leader but is focusing on the five schools showing him interest at this time.

USC A Factor Again With Jones
By Phil Kornblut
DE Justin Jones (6-8 250) of Conyers, GA committed to Kentucky in late June, but that commitment could end as early as Thursday. Jones made an unofficial visit to USC last weekend for the Georgia game and said Wednesday night he might decommit Thursday when Kentucky recruiter Joker Phillips comes to his school. Jones also plays tight end but primarily is playing defensive end this season. While in Columbia Saturday he met with recruiter Ron Cooper, defensive line coach Brad Lawing, and spoke briefly with head coach Steve Spurrier. "They said they would give me the opportunity to play defensive end there and tight end," Jones said. "Which ever one fits me best. They made it clear my offer was still on the table. Dickerson Ready For USC Visit
By Phil Kornblut
LB Josh Dickerson (6-2 220) of Georgia Military JC said Thursday night he will be making his official visit to USC this weekend. His parents will join him on the trip and he expects to arrive in Columbia around 6:00 PM. "I'm looking forward to seeing the facilities, the atmosphere and the players," Dickerson said. Dickerson's teammate, LB Tony Straughter (6-1 211) also will make an official visit to USC this weekend, and Dickerson feels the Gamecocks want them both. "They just told me they really need us to come in and play for them next year," he said. "They are in my top three right now along with Tennessee and West Virginia. It's 50-50 on if I'll commit. If I really like it that much, then I'll commit, but I'm trying to take things slow. I want to visit Tennessee and West Virginia." Dickerson said going into the weekend he does not have a favorite.
At least two other prospects are scheduled for official visits to USC this weekend. They are teammates WR Tim Smith (6-0 185) and LB Jerrod Askew (6-0 185) of Chesapeake, VA. Clemson has no official visits scheduled for this weekend.

It is being confirmed on several insider sites that now 4* Demario Jeffrey has also sustained a torn ACL injury, and is out for the remainder of the year with reconstructive surgery. That's BOTH our 4* commitments thus far down for the count......both should be recovered fully by the time they come to USC, but man, that sure is a kick in the crotch.......

USC Recruit Jeffery Lost For The Season
By Phil Kornblut
USC commitment DB Damario Jeffery (6-3 213) of Columbia will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. He'll have surgery Tuesday according to his coach Kemper Amick. "The USC doctors advised him not to play anymore," Amick said. "Our trainer feels he may have done it the week before (September 5th) against Dreher. He played all the Mid-Carolina game (September 12th) with a knee brace." Amick said Jeffery had some swelling in the knee this week and an MRI Tuesday discovered the ligament tear. Jeffery still practiced Thursday before the decision was made to shut him down for the season.

By Phil Kornblut
LB Tony Straughter (6-1 211) of Georgia Military JC said Saturday night there's a strong likelihood he will commit to USC Sunday morning when he meets with head coach Steve Spurrier. He called his experience this weekend a nine on a scale of ten. Straughter's teammate, LB Josh Dickerson (6-2 220), also is making his official visit to USC this weekend. Dickerson said Saturday night he's enjoyed his visit but is not sure he'll make a commitment Sunday. He said he would like to take at least one more visit before deciding. Straughter Commits To USC

LB Tony Straughter (6-1 211) of Georgia Military JC committed to USC Sunday. His teammate, LB Josh Dickerson (6-2 220) did not commit and will take at least two more official visits before deciding. Straughter and Dickerson made official visits with the Gamecocks over the weekend. "I felt really at home," Straughter said. "I decided to go ahead and join them. I like the way coach (Raymond) Harrison talked about how he helps with academics. And coach (Ellis) Johnson and coach (Steve) Spurrier said I have a chance to come in and play right away." Straughter said he could play either of the linebacker positions or the spur safety. Straughter said he will not take any more visits. He also has offers from Kansas State, Ole Miss, Tennessee and East Carolina. Straughter is a native of Madison, FL and is on track to graduate in December. He will have three years to play two. Dickerson said he wants to take at least two more visits before making a final decision. "After that I will make my decision for sure," he said. He plans to visit West Virginia and Tennessee in October. He did enjoy his time in Columbia. "I liked it a lot," he said. "I like the coaching staff a lot. I want to play in a 3-4 scheme. A 4-2-5 scheme, I've never really had a chance to play in that. But I would say they (USC) are at the top of my list right now." Dickerson is from Kingsland, GA. He also has three years to play two.

NC Place Kicker Favors USC
By Eric Guimaraes
PK Jeremy Shelley (5-10 165) of Raleigh, NC has not received an offer from USC to date but says they are his favorite. Shelley has also received interest from East Carolina and Hawaii. Clemson has also spoken with him telling him they will not likely offer a scholarship to a kicker this year but may give him the opportunity to walk on. USC is waiting to see if they will have a scholarship to offer. Shelley's career long is 50 yards but he says, "I've hit some from 60 in practice." He is 5 of 7 on the season missing a 47 and a 38 yard attempt and his longest this year is 46. "I could really see myself playing at USC. They are definately my favorite, " he said. Shelley's brother Wes is a junior at USC and will be graduating early. "He's a regular fraternity student," says Shelley. "He loves it down there," he added. Shelley is also being recruited for soccer but would rather play football. "It does give me some options," said Shelley. He would like to take his official visits to USC, East Carolina, and Hawaii.

Cross Now Eyeing Both Palmetto State Programs
By Phil Kornblut
USC has long been a player with DE Izaan Cross (6-5 253) of Flowery Branch, GA, and now Clemson is in the picture as well. The Tigers recently offered Cross and immediately became a factor. "It's a great school, a great program, and it's not too far from home," Cross said. "I hear great things about it. It's a small community, a small family town. I'm looking into them really hard." USC has continued to work Cross and he talks regularly with recruiter Shane Beamer. "I've always liked South Carolina," Cross said. "That was one of the schools I was able to see during spring practice. I've liked them from the get-go." Cross attended the Mississippi State at Georgia Tech game last weekend, and because he's taking an SAT course on Saturdays, he's not been able to get to any other games thus far. He had hoped to go to Clemson this Saturday but won't be able to make it. Cross said the schools he's focusing on right now are Clemson, USC, Georgia Tech, Arkansas and North Carolina. He has not decided on official visits. Through four games, Cross has 34 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

Kinda sucks that the stars in this year's class are getting injured and out for the season. These injuries are pretty serious so hopefully they will recover fully before they get on campus.
Seems like we are recruiting kids who are not getting offers from any decent SEC schools and I don't know what is up with that. I understand that most of you say that Spurrier hands picks the guys he wants, but as we have seen, the guys he has "hand-picked" has not necessarily equaled to good performance on the field. Spurrier's best class from two years ago has been a HUGE disappointment. It's time for Spurrier to take recruiting seriously and we have to recruit the big guns like Clemson does if we even want to win 9-10 games.

Tampa QB Aycock Likes USC, Georgia Tech
By Eric Guimaraes
QB Dontae Aycock (5-10 215) of Tampa, FL plans to take two of his official visits to USC and Georgia Tech after his season is completed. Aycock is being recruited by USC as a running back and by Georgia Tech as a quarterback. Aycock has already made two visits to Tech and likes what he has seen. "They run the same offense we run at my high school," he said. "I like the way they run their practices too," added Aycock. Last week, Aycock ran for 147 yards and four touchdowns and threw for another 96 yards and a touchdown. He is in regular contact with USC recruiter David Reaves and says he has heard a lot of good things about the Gamecocks. "I know someone up there and he says a lot of good things about the program," says Aycock. He was scheduled to visit North Carolina last weekend but did not make the trip. Aycock is wide open in his recruitment and says environment and academics are important to him. He has several offers including USC, Georgia Tech, Louisville, South Florida, West Virginia, Duke, Northwestern, Rutgers, and Arkansas.

Gilmore Set For USC Visit
By Phil Kornblut
DB Stephon Gilmore (6-2 195) of South Pointe will make his official visit to USC this weekend. His parents will join him. Gilmore has been to USC several times, so he plans to use this visit to further enhance his knowledge of the program. "I just want to make sure that I'm at home if I decide to go there," Gilmore said. "It's a home state school. I've been there five or six times. I like their defense. Coach (Ellis) Johnson is a good coach." This will be Gilmore's second official visit. He visited Tennessee last weekend with his family. "They didn't play well (against Florida) but I liked the atmosphere," Gilmore said. "It was a great visit and I'm glad I went." Gilmore said he talked with Vols head coach Phillip Fulmer for about an hour. USC and Tennessee are recruiting him as a corner. Gilmore will visit Alabama October 4th. He's considering Clemson, Florida and Florida State for his other visits. He does not have a favorite. Gilmore said USC, Tennessee and Alabama seem to be recruiting him the hardest. He plans to make a decision soon after his last official visit but might not announce a decision until the playoffs or all star game.

It's time for Spurrier to take recruiting seriously and we have to recruit the big guns like Clemson does if we even want to win 9-10 games.
This post makes no sense on so many levels:
1) USC is recruiting players that are getting offers from tons of 1-A programs, including many from other SEC schools. With the exception of maybe a couple, the remaining recruits on our board we are pursuing are highly rated 4*'s: Gilmore, Bonds, Aycock (above), Washington, Farms, Carpenter, Montgomery, Telfort, etc. etc. etc.....
2) Spurrier hasn't been the one that has been "hand-picking", for the most part....it's his assistant coaches like Cooper, Reaves, Gillespie, and Beamer that have been finding the diamonds in the rough for USC.
3) WHich class do you mean by two years ago? If you mean the 2006 class, that class was ranked 24th by Rivals on NSD, but we have gotten All-SEC Brinkley, All-SEC Norwood, All-SEC Munnerlyn, and All-SEC Cook out of it. Not a 4* among them. Not to mention Stewart, Smelley, Eckerson, Anderson, Batchelor, Moe Brown, and Rodney Paulk. If anything, our '06 class was grossly underrated....
4) Our coaches are recruiting harder right now than they ever had since coming to USC. It all depends on how well we do this season......the collapse at the end of last season stunted what was going to be a solid top-15 ranked class for us last year, and has made many top prospects for this recruiting season hesitate and wait on us until they see that we can rebound. If we can win 7-8 games this season (I say 8, with a 9th from a possible bowl win), we could possibly have another chance at a top-15 ranked class.....

USC Among Favorites Of Florida Receiver
By Phil Kornblut
WR Lamar Scruggs (6-4 220) of Jacksonville, FL has a favorites list of USC, South Florida, Illinois and Tennessee his coach said Thursday night. ping (Steve) Spurrier." Scruggs plans to set official visits with his four favorites, and he might visit Florida, too. The Gators also have offered. Scruggs caught 11 touchdown passes last season. "He catches the ball away from his body, in his hands, as good as any kid you'll ever see," Reynolds said. "He keeps his body between the defender and the ball. He can run over people. Spurrier's best class from two years ago has been a HUGE disappointment.
I'm really shocked to hear someone say this.
DNQ or Left School
Michael Bowman
Sam Pope
Arkee Smith
Mat Williams
Redshirted or Prep Schooled Members of 2006 Class (Only 4 Games into Eligibility)
Antonio Allen (being redshirted this year, too)
Akeem Auguste
Eric Baker
Jason Barnes
Mark Barnes
Matt Clements
Stephen Garcia
Melvin Ingram (played last year; being redshirted this year)
Byron McKnight
Donte'e Nicholls
Kyle Nunn
Quintin Richardson
Jamire Williams
Alonzo Winfield
So 27 guys affiliated with the 2007 recruiting class are in their 2nd year of college football. 14 (52%) of those guys are going into their 5th week of eligibility. How on earth can you put a "HUGE disappointment" label on a class this early? Several guys from the 2006 class are HUGE contributors this year, and several are starting this weekend. Don't judge a recruiting class before they've even been on campus a year and a half.

Dickerson Commits To USC
By Phil Kornblut
USC has landed the second half of the linebacker tandem at Georgia Military JC. Josh Dickerson (6-2 220) said Sunday night he committed to his Gamecock recruiter Ron Cooper last week. Earlier this month GMA LB Tony Straughter committed to the Gamecocks. Dickerson and Straughter made their official visit to USC the weekend of the Wofford game. "I liked the atmosphere and the facilities, and the chance of playing early," Dickerson said. "Coach Cooper was happy and was glad to take the commitment." Dickerson indicated the commitment was a solid one. Asked if he would take other official visits, Dickerson said, "I probably won't, but it's still a possibility for Tennessee and West Virginia." Dickerson is a native of Kingsland, GA. He said he is on track to graduate in December and will have three years to play two. He's the 16th commitment for the Gamecocks' 2009 class.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Dickerson visited with Straughter, but chose to wait to commit and visit other programs, I had heard that he gave us a silent commitment that was 99% solid unless one other program he hadn't checked yet won him over. Apparently it did not. Josh is a high 3* OLB per Rivals, with offers from UT, Ole Miss, ECU, Minnesota and Marshal, among others....
Gamecock Target Commits to Wisconsin
By Eric Guimaraes
DE David Gilbert (6-4 215) of Oakland Park, FL committed to Wisconsin yesterday. He had narrowed his list to Wisconsin, USC, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and Louisville. Gilbert says he spoke with David Reaves late last week and has a lot of respect for the Gamecock coach. "Coach Reaves really helped me a lot through the recruiting process," said Gilbert. "He never pressured me to do anything and gave me a lot of good advice. I really respect him for that," he added. Gilbert said he chose Wisconsin because they can give him 'the best of both worlds'. He loves the football program and is impressed with their academics.
By Eric Guimaraes
He has offers from Clemson, Kansas State, Illinois, Central Michigan and Marshall and has received interest from USC, Georgia, Miami, Louisville, and Kentucky. Graham also is waiting to hear from Oregon and Georgia Tech. He says he has heard less frequently from the Gamecocks but that Clemson still keeps in contact with him. Four games into his senior season, Graham has thrown for over 1000 yards and 15 touchdowns and tacked on 200 yards rushing and four more TDs. He does not have any leaders and is considering all schools including Clemson and USC.
Gilmore Makes Visit To USC
By Phil Kornblut
DB Stephon Gilmore (6-2 195) of South Pointe made his official visit to USC over the weekend with his parents and left with a positive opinion. "It was a real good visit," Gilmore said. "I got to meet with Ellis Johnson and Steve Spurrier. I am going to visit Alabama next weekend and have a decision after that." Gilmore said his meeting with Spurrier gave him some indication of what's available for him with the Gamecocks. "He said they have a lot of seniors at cornerback, so there should be a chance for early playing time if I come here," Gilmore said. "I want to make an impact early at whatever school I go to, so that's important to me. We also talked about playing some offense, at quarterback in a special package. We also talked about me returning punts and kickoffs because he likes what I can do with the ball in my hands." Gilmore also has visited Tennessee. He has also been considering Clemson, Florida and Florida State, but apparently those three won't factor into his decision. "I am planning to graduate early, so I need to make my decision to get that in order," Gilmore said. "I liked Clemson at first, but I am just not interested in them right now."
Farms Has Decision, USC Looks Good
By Phil Kornblut
OL Johnnie Farms (6-3 305) of Perry, GA said Sunday night he's made a decision on his college choice and he's planning to say something about that Tuesday. Farms would not disclose his choice but according to sources, USC looks to be in excellent shape to land him. Farms did say the Gamecocks are attractive to him. "I like the Gamecocks," he said. "I like coach Spurrier. I like what they are doing. It looks like they are on the move. And I like the city life." Farms actually had another SEC school in mind but circumstances prevented a commitment. "I tried to commit to Alabama but they were full," he said. Farms made an unofficial visit with a teammate to East Carolina Saturday. Along with USC and Alabama, Farms has been looking the hardest at Florida, Auburn and Central Florida. Farms said the Gamecocks are recruiting him as a left guard.
Michigan Opens Washington's Eyes
By Phil Kornblut
OL Quinton Washington (6-4 315) of Timberland made an official visit to Michigan last weekend, and the trip gave him something to think about according to his coach who joined him on the visit. "People in the stands were chanting Quinton's name," coach Art Craig said. "Q, wear the blue, wear the blue. And it wasn't rehearsed. I've got to give coach Rodriguez and his staff a hand. They did a job. They were genuine with what they wanted. To my understanding, he's their number one lineman they are going after in the nation. That's point blank what coach Rodriguez told me Friday night." Craig said Washington took everything in and was very impressed. "He felt very at ease with them," he said. "He was very impressed with the facilities. They are building a second indoor facility. They are adding 100 sky boxes. They just opened a new academic learning center. He's a man of few words. When I asked him if they are in there with him, he said, coach, how can they not be?" Washington has not scheduled any other official visits but Craig said USC and Clemson each will get one. He's made unofficial visits to both in state schools. Craig said Alabama, Tennessee and Miami are being considered for the remaining official visits. Washington might take an unofficial visit to Tennessee this weekend. Tennessee is showing interest in junior QB Cody Craigh, the coach's son.
But, USC is not yet showing Windham the same love. Recruiter Ron Cooper was by the school this spring, but Windham said he's not heard recently from him. Windham has offers from South Alabama, Arkansas State and Marshall. He's also getting interest from LSU and Southern Miss. He has visited LSU twice and might go to Southern Miss this weekend. "South Alabama is calling a lot," Windham said. 'I would like to stay close to home, so I like South Alabama. But if something bigger comes along, I can't turn that down. If South Carolina were to offer, I'd commit. I'm looking for a place where they throw the ball." Last season Windham set school records with 54 catches for 805 yards. He also scored five touchdowns. "The campus was probably the nicest of any school I've been to. I didn't expect that. I saw the weight room and locker rooms...things like that, and they were real nice," Brown went on to say. He also added, "I like the offense they run and Coach Spurrier is a great coach." Brown plans to take all of his official visits after the season but does not know which schools he will take them to. WB, can you give us a update on the big in-state prospects?
Williams-Brice
10-07-2008, 10:16 PM
Sam Montgomery: If Carolina keeps playing well and Clemson struggles like I think they will, then I think he'll be a Gamecock. However, watch out for North Carolina and Miami.
Chris Bonds: Still favoring South Carolina. Tennessee not as big of a factor as they were about 2 months ago.
Alshon Jeffrey: Still committed to Southern Cal, but has indicated that he is wavering. I honestly think he'll be a Gamecock.
Stephon Gilmore: Add him to our commitment list on Friday.
Duane Chisolm: No chance to qualify. We may try to sign and place.
Ricco Sanders: Carolina will land him if they press.
Quinton Washington: Carolina still leads.
One player in-state that you probably haven't heard of up to this point is Pat Burris, Jr. I've seen at least one guy I trust on another board say that he's the best DB at South Pointe this year. That's where Gilmore and DeVonte Holloman play. I believe Tony Morrell is saying that they are checking on his grades before offering.
Ray Names Top Four
By Eric Guimaraes
LB Lance Ray (6-3 190) of Havana, FL has narrowed his list to four. They are Illinois, Florida, Arkansas, and LSU. Ray is high on the Gamecocks as well but says he was told recently that USC was full at the line backing position where they were recruiting him to play. "They told me that anything could happen and they would stay in touch with me," he said, "that's just how recruiting goes." Ray has scheduled two official visits and will take the first one to Arkansas on November 1st. He then will head to Illinois on November 15th. Both schools are giving him an opportunity to play wide receiver and it's the position he prefers. "I played mostly linebacker as a junior but I'm playing wide receiver this year. I like it there better but I'll play wherever," Ray says. He says his high school runs the same offense as USC and if they were to give him a chance at the receiver position, they would immediately be a part of his top five. He has no favorites.
Richardson says he has not heard from USC recently and says they are no longer a factor. Texas A&M is the only school to offer and Richardson says that most schools are waiting on his academic progress. He feels confident Notre Dame will offer shortly. This season, Richardson has two interceptions, 11 pass breakups, and 46 tackles. He has not gotten in the end zone this season but said, "I'm going to get me one (touchdown) this week." Richardson did not name a favorite.
Gilmore Announcement Pushed Back Another Day
By Phil Kornblut
DB Stephen Gilmore (6-2 195) of South Pointe has made his college decision and wants to reveal the choice. The problem has been finding the right day to do it. Originally the plan was to announce the decision this Friday. But because the Saturday papers would be filled with stories on the Friday night high school games and previews of the Saturday college games, Gilmore's father, Steve, said Wednesday night the decision was made to go to another day next week. "We want it to be his day," Steve Gilmore said. The day chosen next was Tuesday of next week, but Gilmore said that's not going to work either because the Wednesday papers will be dominated by coverage of Steve Spurrier's and Tommy Bowden's news conferences from Tuesday. So, Gilmore said they have now settled on next Wednesday as the day for the announcement. The news conference will be around noon at the high school gym according to Gilmore. Stephon Gilmore is not taking any visit this weekend. His father said he made the decision from among USC, Alabama and Tennessee, the three schools to which he made official visits.
He changed from Friday because he didn't want the attention to be on him and distract his teammates before their game. Regardless, I'm not going to hate on a high school kid who has earned at least his 15 seconds of fame. He's a top 10 player in the state, and he deserves to have his moment the way he wants it.
Let's wait until the kid enrolls into his school of choice. If he ends up not working hard, not going to class, and whining, then I'll concur that he's full of himself. I will not, however, do that to a kid who (a) deserves his moment, (b) I've interacted with and had nothing but positive experiences with, and (c) has had nothing but positive reviews given to me from people who personally know him.
Saw this on Tony Morrell's Insider Report. I see this as a combination of a couple of good things for us. One could agree that Taterville's "issues" has some affect on this. I'm no prophet but I do love to optimistically read between the lines. Could this wavering of commitment go hand in hand with a possible commitment from Gilmore to USC this week? RB Ben Axon (6-1 200) of Bradenton, FL has been committed to Clemson since June, but that commitment is on life support following the resignation of Tommy Bowden. "I wasn't shocked," Axon said. "Clemson has high expectations. You've got to take care of business. I'm let down by the coaching staff. I don't think coach Swinney will be back. I think they are going to clean out the whole offensive staff. Right now, it's not looking pretty for me and Clemson. Coach Scott told me to wait it out about two more weeks. I'm going to wait for two more weeks and see how things work out." Axon said he talked with Brad Scott yesterday. He is scheduled for an official visit to Clemson November 15th. He also has a visit set with West Virginia December 13th. Axon said he's heard from USC recruiters David Reaves and Robert Gillespie and he plans to set an official visit with the Gamecocks. Jeffrey Will Take In USC Game Saturday
By Phil Kornblut
WR Alshon Jeffrey (6-3 217) of Calhoun County said he will be at USC Saturday night for the LSU game. This will be his third unofficial visit to USC for a game this season. Jeffrey has been committed to Southern Cal since the summer, and he said he's "95 percent" committed to the Trojans. But he said he will set official visits with USC and Kentucky. He's not sure if he'll visit Clemson. Jeffrey said no other schools are factors right now. "I talk to Southern Cal every week," he said. "They keep me posted on everything going on, and they ask me how school is going and they're trying to keep up with my season. Coach Beamer (USC) and I talk like every week. I'll call him or he'll call me." Jeffrey said he will be watching the Gamecock offense closely Saturday night. "I want to see how the quarterback position does," he said. "I want to see how the quarterback develops." The question remains as to whether Jeffrey will stick with his commitment to Southern Cal all the way to the end. Right now, he can't answer that. "I don't know," he said. "It's just coming down to Signing Day. With everything going on, coaches getting fired, Bowden getting fired, anything can happen." Jeffrey said teammates Davis Sims (Kentucky commitment) and junior defensive back David Watson, brother of Tennessee corner back DeAngelo Willingham, will join him in Columbia for the game.
By Eric Guimaraes
LB Jonathan Davis (5-9 205) of Tucker, GA is taking an unofficial visit to USC this weekend. It will be his first trip to Columbia. "It doesn't matter which side of the ball as long as he's playing," he added. His father says that they feel Davis has a better shot at playing early at USC (at running back). Williams Will Attend USC-LSU Game
DB Jerrodd Williams (6-0 185) of Daniel, who has been committed to Virginia Tech since June, plans to attend USC's game Saturday night against LSU on an unofficial visit. He will be accompanied by his parents, his brother and his girlfriend. "I'm going there to see a good game," Williams said. Asked if the visit means he has renewed interest in the Gamecocks, Williams said, "I'd rather not comment on that. I'm not trying to get something started. I talked to coach Lawing and he wants me to come down. Coach Lawing calls every Thursday night and he tells me they are coming after me hard and I'm the number one defensive back they are going after." But, Williams said he feels his commitment to Virginia Tech is still a firm one. He has been to one game at Virginia Tech and will go back there for the Virginia game. He plans to set an official visit with Virginia Tech, and he said he might set one with USC if he likes what he sees Saturday and they like him. Williams has been offered by the Gamecocks and Hokies, and he's also hearing some from West Virginia. Through seven games this season for the undefeated Lions, Williams has 25 tackles, two interceptions and three passes broken up. And he's returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown.
"They got in touch with my coach and told him they want me to come up for the LSU game," Raper said. "I don't know if I'll be able to make it or not. I talked with North Carolina recruiter John Lovett yesterday. And my coach talked to Tennessee today. And I talked to (Clemson recruiter) coach Napier tonight. He understands about the de-commitment, but he's still going to recruit me like I'm committed to them, and he expects me to come up there." Raper said his three favorites right now are Clemson, North Carolina and Tennessee and those are the three he wants to set official visits with. He has been offered by Clemson and Duke. Raper plays running back, receiver and corner back.
By Phil Kornblut
LB Jonathan Davis (5-9 205) of Tucker, GA took in the USC-LSU game Saturday with his father and left with a favorable opinion of the Gamecocks. "I love the place," Davis said. "I love the atmosphere. Axon Switches To USC
By Phil Kornblut
RB Ben Axon (6-1 200) of Bradenton, FL has decommitted from Clemson and committed to USC. Axon had committed to the Tigers in June but after the resignation of Tommy Bowden, his commitment weakened considerably. Today, USC assistants Robert Gillespie and David Reaves were by his school and shortly after that Axon made the decision to go with the Gamecocks. "It was just the sudden down fall of the Clemson program," Axon said. "They are going down hill. They lost to Georgia Tech which I thought was very important to coach Swinney. It just didn't seem right for me to go up there. I was a Tiger and I was committed to Clemson. Clemson felt like home to me. But I've made my decision and I hope everybody respects that." Axon said USC also was one of the first schools to offer him and he always remained interested in the Gamecocks. "Instant playing time and the difference between the SEC and the ACC," he said in giving reasons for going with USC. "At Clemson, I was guaranteed a little playing time if I worked hard, but at South Carolina I was guaranteed the starting job if I work hard. Watching them play LSU this weekend made me think even harder about being a Gamecock. The only thing they didn't have was a running game." Axon said its a "pretty solid" commitment to USC. He was scheduled to visit Clemson November 15th but doesn't think he'll make that now. Purdue also has been showing interest and he could take a visit there. He has not set his date for an official visit with the Gamecocks. Axon is the first running back to commit to the Gamecocks for the 2009 class.
By Eric Guimaraes
LB/RB Devin Wherry (6-0 220) of South Pointe says he still favors USC and is hoping for an offer. Wherry plays both ways in high school but prefers the offensive side of the ball. "I always like going down there," he said. "It's a great atmosphere," Wherry added. He has offers from SC State and PC. He has already visited State and likes the school. He will visit PC for the Liberty game and it will be his first time in Clinton for a game. Holloman Ready For Next Visit
By Phil Kornblut
DB Devonte Holloman (6-3 210) of South Pointe has taken official visits to Tennessee and USC, and he will visit LSU this weekend. He will set a visit with North Carolina, and Clemson also remains in the picture. Holloman visited USC last weekend for the LSU game with his family and enjoyed himself on his first ever visit to Williams-Brice Stadium. "It went real well," Holloman said. "I got to see a lot. My parents got to sit and talk with the coaches and experience a good game. It was exciting." Holloman said the defense deployed by the Gamecocks drew his attention. "They play three safeties, and for me it's a good chance that I can fight for some early playing time," Holloman said. "Coach (Ellis) Johnson and coach (Ron) Cooper do a good job there." Holloman said he talked with those two coaches, and with his dad, had a conversation with Steve Spurrier before leaving town. "My dad is a big football fan, and he gets excited when he talks with somebody like that in history," he said. Holloman had been a Clemson commitment until the Bowden resignation. He and recruiter Billy Napier have missed each other on the phone recently, but he said he's not closed the door on the Tigers. "I want to see who they hire or if they stick with coach (Dabo) Swinney," Holloman said. "I just want to talk to him (Swinney) and see where he plans to take the program." Holloman said he will visit LSU this weekend by himself. He does not claim a favorite. He will not play in the Shrine Bowl but does plan to play in the North-South All Star Game in Myrtle Beach.
Bonds In Between SEC Visits
By Phil Kornblut
DE Chris Bonds (6-4 283) of Richland Northeast made his official visit to Alabama last weekend along with his family, and it turned out to be a positive experience. "We thought it was great," said Bonds's mother Ginger Miller. "We road around the campus a little bit. We watched the tailgating activities. We went to the game and then we went to dinner. Some of the coaches were there. Chris then went and spent time with some of the players. Sunday we went to coach Saban's for breakfast. He and Chris hung out together. Then we went back to the athletic center and ate again. Then we met with coach Saban together. We can't think of anything negative (about Alabama). It's the SEC which to me is the greatest, and they are 7-0. And coach Saban has a lot of plans for Chris's major, engineering." Bonds also has taken an official visit to Notre Dame. This weekend he and his family will visit Tennessee. They also are mulling over an official visit to Southern Cal. That would be the final official visit. "There are no other schools to visit," Mrs. Miller said. "I'm trying to get him to focus on the ones we have now. With USC, we've tossed around the idea of an official visit but we know them so well. We already know what they are all about,, and we're right down the street." Bonds plans to attend USC's next home game against Tennessee. Bonds has been been out with a knee injury since mid September and is back working with the team running and doing drills. There's a chance he could return for the playoffs. He declined an opportunity to play in the Shrine Bowl but hopes to play some in the Army All American Game. He will receive his jersey for that game Thursday. Bonds does not have a front runner at this point, his mother said, and he plans to make a decision in December. He will not hold a news conference but rather will release his decision through the media in a more low key fashion according to his mother.
