Manning Watches USC Game
By Phil Kornblut
LB Terrell Manning (6-3 210) of Laurinburg, NC attended USC's spring game Saturday. "It was great," he said. "They had a huge crowd. Their fans are really in to their football program. Some of the fans knew who I was. I was impressed by going out of state and getting the same love I get in state. The players I did get to meet were pretty cool." Manning's former teammate is current Gamecock defensive end Travian Robertson, and while the idea of playing with him is appealing, Manning said that won't be that big a factor in his decision. He also has offers from Clemson, North Carolina, NC State, East Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Virginia Tech, Tennessee and Miami. Manning also has visited Clemson, NC State and North Carolina. He enjoyed his visit to Clemson earlier this spring. "I went up there and showed me basically everything," Manning said. "I loved it. The academic support they had was great. It should be basically impossible for their football players to fail. You can't fail with an academic program that good." Manning is planning to go to Virginia Tech this weekend, but after the tragedy Monday in Blacksburg, he's not sure he'll make the trip. "My mother is worried sick about it," he said. "I wouldn't be surprised if we schedule that for another day." Manning said NC State is the school recruiting him the hardest right now. "They are moving up fast," he said. His current top five are USC, Clemson, NC State, Florida and Virginia Tech. He is working to graduate in December.

USC Offers Son Of Former Linebacker
By Phil Kornblut
LB Christian Robinson (6-4 204) of Atlanta attended USC's spring game and is strongly considering the offer made to him by the Gamecocks. He is the son of former Gamecock linebacker Ken Robinson. "I was really excited," Robinson said. "I've been coming back to Columbia since I was little. It was exciting just seeing all the new things, the weight room, the stadium, just the team in general. Coach Spurrier said he wants to win an SEC championship this season and I believe he can do it." Robinson also has offers from Georgia, Vanderbilt, Duke, Wake Forest and NC State. He is also getting interest from Clemson, Florida and Boston College. "I've been talking to Clemson," he said. "They said that they heard about me and that they just want my tape. If it's good, they said they would love to have me come play for them." As for his dad's influence on him regarding his alma mater, Robinson said, "Inside, I know he would love for me to go to South Carolina, but he's not pushing me. He just wants the best for me." Robinson also visited Georgia and Auburn this spring. He does not claim a favorite. Robinson played inside linebacker last season but will play outside this season. He also plays receiver. He had over 50 tackles last season, best on the team. And he had 15 receptions for 340 yards and 2 touchdowns.

He'll officially be added when Tony Morrell gets in touch with him. King doesn't have his cell phone at GMC, and they don't have phones in the dorms there, so we won't get official word for a while.
Shaq has a shot at being a 4-star prospect. Rivals doesn't rank prospects until June, so I don't know who has him as a 1-star.
Gotcha..... maybe they just show 1 star and N/R until they are evaluated... not sure, but this is good info. Thanks!
This was where I got the 1 star from, but I am sure it is because he is "N/R" yet:

USC Keeping Interest Up With Sommers
By Phil Kornblut
WR Brian Sommer (6-1 193) of Alcoa, TN said USC continues to keep up the strong recruiting effort. "I get a letter almost every day from them and I talk with coach Spurrier Jr. almost every other day," Sommer said. "They are very interested and they are still my favorite. I thought I might narrow it down to USC and Tennessee, but after visiting Ole Miss, that boosted them into my top schools. South Carolina, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Alabama are all in the mix. Alabama is going to offer me but I haven't talked to coach Saban yet. I'm supposed to talk to him this week." He is also getting interest from Colorado, NC State and Louisville. Sommer is going to the Nike camp at Georgia this weekend.

Benton Has Busy Week Ahead
By Phil Kornblut
PK/P Spencer Benton (6-3 185) of Myrtle Beach is the top kicker in the state for next season and is rated among the best in the country. Last season he was 9-12 on field goals with a long of 49 yards and four over 45 yards. And he averaged over 38 yards per punt with a long of 58 yards. Benton is in the middle of a three way battle for his services, and he is being pulled by his mind, his heart, and the opportunity for early playing time. Benton aspires to be a doctor, and with that in mind he favors Duke. “I went there for treatment of migraine headaches when I was in the fifth grade and they fixed it, and I’ve loved them every since,” Benton said. But Benton grew up a Clemson fan in a Clemson family, and the Tigers are his only official offer thus far. However, Clemson wants Benton to pay his own way his first semester before putting him on scholarship. “I want to go there but they want to grayshirt me, and they have a whole line of kickers, and they just signed Richard Jackson,” Benton said. “I’d rather go into a place where I’m the top guy no matter what.” Which brings USC firmly into the picture. “I’m still the top man for Carolina,” Benton said. “I talked to coach Spurrier Jr. last week he and told me they are looking to sign a kicker this year for next year.” Benton should have a firmer grasp on things after this week. He will meet Monday morning at his school with Spurrier Jr. and later in the day with Bowden. His Duke recruiter will visit him Thursday. Benton would like to make a decision before the start of the season.

By Phil Kornblut
USC assistant coach Steve Spurrier Jr. and Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden and assistant Dabo Swinney visited Myrtle Beach High School Monday to check on PK/P Spencer Benton (6-3 185). Duke coaches will be in Thursday. The coaches couldn't talk directly to Benton, but he got their messages. "Coach Spurrier let me know I'm their top guy," Benton said. "He wants me in camp. I'm going there June 7th when our team plays in a seven on seven camp and I'll kick for coach Chatham. Coach Bowden and coach Swinney let me know nothing has changed with the offer and the grayshirt. If USC offers, it will be hard to turn down. They want be as a combo kicker, as a placekicker and punter. They are starting to be good. And if Duke offered, they would be hard to turn down." Benton wants to go to medical school and is favoring Duke for that reason though he says it's very tight among all three schools right now.

USC, Clemson In Mix With Top Quarterback
By Phil Kornblut
QB Terrelle Pryor (6-6 218) of Jeannette, PA, about thirty miles from Pittsburgh, is regarded by many scouts as one of the nation's top quarterback prospect. Last season he rushed for 1676 yards and 29 touchdowns and passed for 1732 yards and 15 touchdowns. He averaged nearly nine yards per carry and completed over 56% of his passes. "He may be the best athlete I've ever seen," said Jeannette coach Ray Reits. "It's the combination of size and speed. He's pretty quick. He's very fluid. He has a tremendous arm, a very powerful arm. He's only played quarterback two years. To be honest with you, I just call him a freak. He has a desire to get better, that's the scary part. He's a Vince Young clone." Pryor also is a standout basketball player who plays point guard. According to Reitz, Pryor has more than 50 offers. He knows USC and Clemson have communicated with Pryor, but he's not sure if they've offered officially. Texas was at his school yesterday. Ohio State, NC State, Michigan and Virginia also have been in, and Southern Cal and Notre Dame are coming by. Ohio State coach Jim Tressell has been in and that impressed Pryor, though his coach said he remains open. "If the right school gets this kid, he's a program changer," Reitz said. "You get a kid like him and he puts you into the national spotlight."

USC Recruiter Checks On Thurmond
By Phil Kornblut
University of South Carolina assistant Robert Gillespie stopped by North Augusta on Monday to check on speedy WR Marcus Thurmond (6-1 175).
"Like everybody else, South Carolina loves his speed, it just jumps out at you on film," North Augusta coach Dan Pippin said. "They just want to study him up-close at (USC) camp this summer before they make a scholarship decision. But they really like his speed."
Virginia and Troy State also called about Thurmond on Monday. He has no offers, but has been told he is under consideration for a scholarship from UGA, Clemson, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Troy State and USC, among others. He participated in the Nike Camp in Athens last Saturday.
"Marcus can run with anybody who plays the game on Friday nights," Pippin said. "Yes, he is still very raw, but he's a hard worker and the rest of his game will come around. However, he has something you can't coach: big-time speed."
Thurmond traveled to spring games at FSU, Clemson, South Carolina and Tennessee. He said coaches keep teasing him about his speed, starting with Clemson WR coach Dabo Swinney: "He kept introducing me to other people saying 'Have you met the state's fastest player?' It was funny.
Thurmond earned his reputation for speed after running track as a sophomore only to stay in football shape. He ended finishing third in the 800 at the Class AAAA state championship meet with a time of 1:55, which is around two seconds off the state record. He is undefeated so far this year in the 800, winning the event in Thursday's region meet.
This past season, Thurmond caught 46 passes for 546 yards and 6 TD for 1-10 North Augusta.

Succop still has one more year after this one. I'm not worried about addressing the kicker position. We have a couple of guys on our team that can play and I'm sure we will bring in someone next year. We have bigger things to worry about than Succop like the LB position because we will lose the beast in our defense in Jasper Brinkley.

The LB position is one that the coaches are focusing hard on for the next class. I wouldn't be surprised if SC pulls in a highly rated LB class for '08.

I feel that quality LB are easier to find than a consistant fg kicker that also that can put it in the end zone with the rule changes on kick offs. Succop is a prime example of that. They are hard to find.

Odom has now officially offered Baciu who also has offers from Clemson, Memphis, St. Johns, Virginia Tech, Virginia, NC State and Wake Forest. Baciu and Jordan will make an unofficial visit to Clemson tomorrow, and they will visit USC Tuesday. "When he feels right with the coach and the situation, he can end it right then," Jordan said. "There's a possibility it could happen on one of these visits. I'd have to give the upper hand to Clemson since they've been in touch so much. They're picky about their quarterbacks because of coach Spurier, so he said not to get upset if I don't get an offer from them right away. He wants me to come to one of their one day camps, and I'm going to try to do that." Shaw also has been contacted by Clemson recruiter Ron West. West and Beamer told Shaw they'll be by to see him in spring practice next week. Shaw attended the NC State at Clemson game last fall. Shaw was offered by Middle Tennessee State Thursday. He also has an offer from Air Force. He is also hearing from Wake Forest, Indiana and Alabama.

Simmons attended USC's spring game, and he made an unofficial visit to Clemson during the spring. Clemson has offered and USC just recently started to recruit him. "Every school I talk to says they're going to start throwing the ball to the tight end," Allen said. "My commitment still stands strong. I wouldn't say I'm taking a look at other schools, but I'm evaluating my options. I really want to get a degree that will mean something when football is over." USC recruiter Fred Chatham and Clemson recruiter Chris Rumph have been by the school this spring according to Allen who added he gets regular text messages from Rumph. Bulldogs Offer Freeman
By Phil Kornblut
Pelion OL Dalton Freeman (6-6 265) received an offer Friday from Georgia according to his coach and father Ben Freeman. "That was a good one," Freeman said. "They were kind of slow. He went to their junior day and they said they were going to offer but didn't. Their new offensive line coach watched practice Wednesday and they called today with an offer. Tennessee got involved this week a little bit and I'm hoping they are going to offer. Dan Brooks came thru yesterday. We're going to try to do as many unofficial visits as we can this summer and then narrow it down. South Carolina has done a really good job with him. Coach Hawkins from Colorado flew in yesterday, and Dalton's been real impressed with those guys. He likes Wake Forest. And Georgia Tech has done a really good job with him. Central Florida has done a good job. Coach (Tommy) Bowden has been by twice, in January and last week, and they are are doing a really good job. They make no bones about him being their number one offensive line guy. And John Hunt has told me the same thing at South Carolina." Freeman now has 19 offers.

USC Showing Interest in Tampa Wideout
By Matt Long
Tampa-Chamberlain WR Fred Sykes says he has heard from "a lot of schools," including South Carolina. The continually-growing list also includes Florida, Florida State, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Oklahoma State, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, West Vrginia, FIU and FAU, Purdue, Nebraska, and South Florida. Sykes had over 30 receptions last year, which Head Coach Billy Turner says is impressive because Chamberlain uses a run-heavy offense. Turner said Sykes also returned a kickoff for a touchdown in one of the team's playoff wins. Sykes has tendered offers from Kentucky, Ole Miss, Toledo, Marshall, Purdue, and South Florida. Although USC has not yet offered, coach David Reaves has met with Turner, and Sykes says Carolina is among his favorites, along with Florida, Florida State, Kentucky, Rutgers, and West Virginia. He plans to attend USC's day camp later this summer. "We're going to fly him up there and let coach (Steve) Spurrier get his eyes on him," Turner said. Sykes also plans on attending Florida's camp. Don't expect a decision anytime soon, however.

USC & Clemson Target Miami School
By Matt Long
Last season, Miami Northwestern was 16-0 and Florida 6-A State Champions. As a result, college recruiters have descended on the school "en masse." Northwestern Head Coach Roland Smith has at least five players being recruited by Division 1 schools, Carolina and Clemson among them. "Everybody's looking at these guys," Smith said. Clemson has offered two of the Bulls' defensive stars, DL Marcus Forston (6-3 290) and LB Sean Spence (6-0 195). Meanwhile, USC has also offered those two, along with WR Tommy Streeter (6-5 200). The Palmetto State schools will have heavy competition however, as LSU, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Rutgers, Minnesota, Ole Miss, and South Florida (and many others) have also offered. Forston has attracted nationwide attention, and he counts Notre Dame and Southern Cal among his offers as well. Forston originally listed Miami as his favorite, but now Coach Smith says he is "wide open." Spence has no leaders, either, but Smith said that Clemson "loves him. (Coach David) Blackwell has visited the school and has seen him...Sean likes Clemson because of the history they have of producing good linebackers." Streeter, meanwhile, picked up a USC offer in the past month and has said he is definitely interested in the Gamecocks. Smith said that Steve Spurrier's reputation is certainly a factor in that interest. USC is also looking at QB Jacory Harris, but has not yet offered. Harris does have offers from LSU, Central Florida, South Florida, FIU, Duke, and Alabama. "(Tide Coach Nick) Saban just came by the other day and gave Jacory an offer," Smith said.

Someone who told me Dunlap would be a Gator a month before he signed and maintained that through the day he signed has said if he chose today, Quinn would be a Gamecock. Now that is before he has seen anyone else and he intends to take his visits.

Yeah, there's no doubt in my mind that we have a shot with Quinn. His situation is much like Dunlap's in that he'll have offers from mostly everywhere, and it will likely come down to an SEC battle with USC being at least in his top three. At this point last year, Dunlap was favoring the Gamecocks big time, but we know the rest of the story. Carolina had him as one of their number one targets the whole time. It just didn't seem that way because guys like Travian Robertson and Cliff Matthews made it very clear that they wanted to make early decisions, causing our staff to put the full-court press on them early. Thus, Dunlap's name fell through the cracks in the mainstream recruiting circles, but the coaches loved him from day one. Our coaches absolutely love Robert Quinn, and he'll have a season probably just as big as Dunlap's this year. My point of this rant is that we led for Carlos early in process, but as time went on, he just flat out fell in love with Florida, and that's okay. That happens. We probably lead for Quinn right now, but it'll come down to those daggum visits, and you always have to be cautious when teams like Florida, Tennessee, and Auburn throw their names into a kid's hat. This will be a fun one to follow.

USC Among Miami WR's Top 5
By Matt Long
USC coach Robert Gillespie has been very active in the Miami area, including recent visits with Booker T. Washington WR Davon Johnson (5-11 170). His efforts might have paid off. Johnson said that USC is among his favorites, along with Miami, Ohio State, Florida, and Central Florida. With the exception of Florida, all have offered scholarships. Other offers have come from West Virginia, Rutgers, Ole Miss, South Florida, FIU, and Miami (OH). Gillespie has visited Washington and has watched the Tornadoes practice. Johnson says a big reason for his interest in South Carolina is due to Head Coach Steve Spurrier, "I like the type of offense he runs, how he spreads it out. It's the kind of offense where a receiver like me would really be used." While Johnson has not yet planned any visits, he did attend Miami's NIKE Camp, and hopes to participate in 7-on-7 tournaments at Miami and Rutgers.

Athens, GA RB Xavier Avery is quite the athlete. Avery (6-0 195) has offers from almost every single SEC and ACC school. On top of that, his coach Ray Bonner says he expects the junior to be a high draft pick in next year's Major League Baseball Draft. As of right now, however, Avery says he wants to play college ball. Both USC and Clemson are looking at him as a 2-sport athlete, and USC made an offer yesterday. "(Head) Coach (Steve) Spurrier was here and made the offer himself," Bonner said. Avery also has offers from Georgia, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Alabama, Miami, Georgia Tech, Auburn, Notre Dame, and Stanford, among many others. Ohio State and Clemson are also looking at him, but neither has yet offered. USC Offers "Underrated" OL

Wilmington, NC-New Hanover OL Nic Becton (6-7 291) has only played one season of high school football. Nevertheless, USC recently became his fourth offer as more and more schools are beginning to notice him. "You can quote me on this," said his coach Kevin Motsinger, "He is the most underrated offensive lineman in the country." Becton has also received offers from Maryland, East Carolina, and NC State. He was just a small forward on the basketball team." Motsinger says that Rumph has remained in touch as Becton played his first football season, and met with the lineman when Becton visited a Clemson practice during his spring break. Brad Lawing is South Carolina's recruiter, and he has been actively pursuing Becton. Becton has visited USC and attended the Garnet & Black Game in April. He has also been to Alabama and Viginia. By Phil Kornblut
DE Steven Fowlkes (6-6 210) of College Park, GA is strongly considering USC at this point and said the Gamecocks are showing strong interest in him. "They are at the top of my list," Fowlkes said. "I've got family there. I'd like to get a visit up there to see the campus. They are pushing pretty hard. I met Steve Spurrier. They had like five guys in here to see me. Tennessee likes me as a wide receiver and that's what I want to play in college. South Carolina is just behind Tennessee, and Purdue is third. Tennessee saw me in spring practice and offered on the spot." Fowlkes said his family wants him to take some visits before making a decision, and he plans to do that. He also has offers from Indiana, Alabama, Mississippi State, Louisville, Ole, Miss, Minnesota and Kentucky. He's also hearing from Georgia, Miami, Central Florida, Michigan and Michigan State. Fowlkes missed five games last season with bursitis in his elbow. He played strictly on defense and had 49 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

Carolina, Tigers Try to Lure Bama Lineman
By Matt Long
DE Courtney Upshaw (6-3 230) of Eufala, Alabama is beginning to attract interest from outside of his home state. The lineman has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Troy, Kentucky, and Southern Miss, and recently picked up offers from Georgia, South Carolina, and Clemson. However, Upshaw hasn't been to any camps yet, and doesn't know which schools he'll visit, although Eufala coach, Dan Klages, says he will certainly visit Alabama and Auburn. "He's going to try to get up to Georgia and one of the South Carolina schools as well," Klages said, "but we'll see what happens." Although Upshaw does not yet have any favorites, Klages said the three Alabama schools have an advantage: Courtney is a Crimson Tide fan, Auburn was the first to contact him, and his former head coach at Eufala is currently an assistant at Troy. "But I think he's open-minded enough, and he hasn't narrowed his list yet," Klage said. Tyrone Nix is recruiting Upshaw for the Gamecocks, while Dabo Swinney is trying to attract him to Clemson.

Thompson To Make Visits Before Decision
By Phil Kornblut
DL Brandon Thompson (6-2 294) will take a number of unofficial visits in the next few weeks before making a final decision on a college his father said Friday. "We've got a couple of more schools to visit and then we'll sit down and evaluate," George Thompson said. Father and son plan to visit Florida State this weekend. They are slated to see Clemson June 7-8. They also plan to visit USC, Miami and Ohio State. Alabama and Georgia also are getting strong consideration. Thompson has been favoring Clemson and his father confirmed the Tigers remain the frontrunners ahead of Alabama and Florida State. "We've spoken to the whole coaching staff at Clemson," Thompson said. "They have shown a lot of love. I want them to be concerned about my son and they have pretty much showed me that. You've got other schools following what they started. Alabama is trying to keep up and Florida State is doing the same. It means so much to me when that first person makes contact. It's good to go where you are wanted." George Thompson played in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys.
