Does anybody know if Culliver made the visit? Last night did not make a very good impression. However, it did show how bad we could use him.

Carlos Thomas couldn't cover a crippled man. :thumbsdow :thumbsdow The ESPN camera angles showed just how bad he was over and over again.
Man did he look lost or what ? :brick:
I would bet that in 07 he RIDES THE PINE and watches a TRUE FRESHMAN START.
I think he was moved to defense out of neccesity, not preference. After losing Ko and Joseph we needed to DB's in a big way so Carlos had to make the move. With the way our young DB's are playing and with the way our current class is shaping up I expect to see him move back to offense in the spring. Either way he doesnt need to see the field on defense. He cant cover and he certainly cant tackle...he has no business playing a DB.

What about Mike West, wasn't he playing in the secondary for us at the begining of the season? Heck if Blake could play like he did last night I'd say put Syvelle back there.

Also this is the worst special teams has looked in fifteen years. Usc has only started past the 30 yard line maybe one time this year. :brick:
I agree, he looked lost last night as he does most of the time. He is not a cover corner and he tackles like Deion Sanders (Bad). He has no idea how to cover and our special teams. look who returns most of our kickoffs. Teams kick it to him wanting him to return the ball. I say we should put a running back there. Look at Arkansas, Jones and McFadden, are there to return kickoffs. I remember when George Rogers used to do the same thing and I believe he still holds the season record for return yards on kickoffs. Just a thought. Mike West looked good on the one kickoff he returned. Just my 02 cents.

I heard somewhere today that Mark Barnes is going to announce his decision the week of the Shrine Bowl. Is that the first week in December? If so, then look for us to get verbals from Mark Barnes, Stephen Garcia, Dion Lecorn, and Antonio Allen around the same time.

I think the main reason they keep Thomas on the defense is because of his speed, if he gets beat he can usually make up lost ground quickly, but I agree with you guys last night was atrocious, he didn't know where the ball was half the time and Arkansas knew it which is why they picked on him all night long.
Just for the record, this is the best thread because it does a great job of bringing the best of us all together to share great info about a team we all love. Major kudos to W-B and Neo though because without them this thread would be without the insider info that makes it special. Here's too 500 more pages!

I'd really like seeing Taylor Rank doing to kick returns. I know he's not the fastest...but he does a good job of running north and south, and doesn't dance around.

Ingram Open After USC Visit
By Phil Kornblut
`
LB Melvin Ingram (6-2 227) of Rockingham, NC made an unofficial visit to USC Saturday for the Arkansas game along with some teammates and family members. The Gamecocks have been battling NC State for the Shrine Bowl selection. "I really don't know where I want to go right now," Ingram said. He has offers from USC, NC State, North Carolina, East Carolina and North Carolina A&T. He has also been to East Carolina for a game. He has an official visit scheduled for USC for December 2nd. He has not set any other visits.
Barnes Not At Game
Not making it in for the game was WR Jason Barnes (6-4 196) of Charlotte. He continues to weigh his options between USC and North Carolina. He told a reporter after his game Friday night that if North Carolina hired Butch Davis has head coach, he would commit to the Tar Heels

USC Coaches Visit GMA Trio
By Phil Kornblut
Three USC assistant coaches met Friday with the three sophomore prospects they covet from Georgia Military JC. DE Corvey Irvin (6-4 275) said he, OL Vince Vance (6-7 300) and DE Jarius Wynn (6-5 273) sat down with Gamecock recruiters Ron Cooper, Brad Lawing and John Hunt. GMA freshman DE Jarriel King, who is committed to USC for 2008, also sat in. Irvin said the coaches continued with their sales pitch. "They said I can come in and play," he said. "They said they know there are a lot of coaches out there that want you, but South Carolina needs you." Several former GMA players are seeing significant playing time at USC this season and Irvin said that is a factor with him. "That influences me a lot," he said. "I see them doing their thing. We'd liked to play together again." The three have official visits set with USC for November 18th and Georgia on the 25th. Irvin will visit Alabama December 9th. Wynn has visited Tennessee officially. Vance is expected to set a visit with Kentucky.

Im glad that Jason Barnes isnt committing to us yet since he is still undecided, but I think its clear that deep down in his heart he wants to play at UNC. If thats the case he shouldnt let everyone around him try to persuade him to attend one school when he really wants to be at another.

The kid has searched long and hard for reasons why he should choose UNC over USC. It's almost like he knows we'd be a better choice, but he wants to go with his heart. He keeps putting stipulations on his commitment, and that leads me to believe he is searching for a reason to choose UNC. What he should do is choose UNC because that's where he obviously wants to be. I wish him the best. He's following his dream and didn't run us through the mud to do so.

I was always under the impression that Spurrier didn't like to hit the JUCO ranks up but we got 3 last year and 3 this year which was about the same thing Holtz did. I really don't care especailly since 2 of our best defenders came from GMA but has the situation at SC changed that mindset or was I just mistaken?

Big lineman are a premium and the best and quickest way to get them is the JUCO route, they are already older, stronger, and bigger at this stage. I feel like we will continue to recruit some JUCO players, especially on the line.

I agree, JUCO's are a quick fix for immediate problems especially on the D, but you can't live on them like Miss State has a history of doing. It doesn't get you anywhere for long, and SOS knows it. That's why he has always been reluctant to sign them. But on the otherhand right now HE IS CHERRY PICKING the JUCO's. and it is paying off for USC. But don't look for JUCO's to be a mainstay year in and year out for SOS. I would expect that in 2 years that you'll see USC sign maybe 1-2 a year at most.
Green Emerging As Prospect
By Phil Kornblut
Spring Valley LB Tim Green (6-2 195), who was injured much of his junior season, has rebounded with a big senior campaign and is now attracting looks from major colleges. USC recruiter David Reaves scouted him Friday night when he had 10 total tackles along with 3 sacks and a fumble recovery. He's also getting interest from North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Southern Miss. He has an offer from Newberry. Green has been to games at Virginia Tech and North Carolina. This season he has a total of 125 tackles with 9 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries.
More Big Offers For Quinn
By Phil Kornblut
Junior LB Robert Quinn (6-4 255) of Fort Dorchester continues to impress and has seen his early offer list grow to include USC, Clemson, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Florida and Tennessee according to his coach. Quinn also is hearing from Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Georgia. Quinn has been to games at USC and Tennessee. He doesn't have a favorite. "He's handling it pretty good," coach Steve Laprad said. "He said he's just going to play football and worry about it after the season."
More Fort D. News
Several more Fort Dorchester players are drawing various forms of interest. DB Kevin White (6-2 190) is hearing from Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Western Carolina, Appalachian State, North Carolina and Virginia. LB Larry Cook (6-2 215) has heard from Clemson, USC, Coastal Carolina, Western Carolina, Appalachian State and Georgia Southern. TE Justin Birch (6-4 225) is hearing from Clemson, Auburn, Appalachian State, Tennessee, Coastal Carolina, Virginia, Citadel and Vanderbilt. And LBs Dante Nixon (5-11 230) and Durante Nixon (5-11 230) will need to attend junior college next fall according to their coach.

Holtz hit them up at a much higher rate. If you notice, Spurrier wants immediate help on the O and D lines. 3 JUCOs a year are not building a program from the JUCO ranks. Also, look for the staff to sign a lot high schoolers on both lines, as to fill the gaps when these JUCOs leave. The problem with Lou is that he would get JUCOs and no one to replace them.

Talk about stock rising . . . Carlos Dunlap has launched up to the #7 overall player in the entire country. I just watched his film for the first time, and the kid is unreal. Cliff Matthews has jumped to #44 overall.

also i notice mark barnes plummeted out of the top 100 (not that it really matters). how were his stats this year?
Williams-Brice
11-07-2006, 11:58 AM
Dunlap wasn't even in the Top 100.
Barnes and Gary Gray (down to 4-stars) both dropped significantly. That's what a 4 win season will do for you. I don't know much about either of their stats, but Gary Gray played QB, which may not have been the best for Mark's offensive stats. He did recently have 21 tackles in a game.
In other news, Willy Korn dropped to #25 overall, but he kept his stars. Q-Rich dropped to #88, as he hardly played at all this season. Garcia fell a few spots to #57, and Travian jumped 7 spots to #92.

Wow how the heck did Dunlap go all the way to #7????? That's just crazy but I really hope we get this guy now. 5 star guy would help our D-line out a lot. He could start as a freshmen. NEO or WB, what are our chances with him now?
Williams-Brice
11-07-2006, 05:03 PM
Our chances are very good as of right now. The Shrine Bowl fiasco has been cleared up, but I'd say he may be leaning towards Florida as of right now. We're definitely in his top 2. You may want to ask GatorHunter how he feels about Dunlap to Florida because they are re-evaluating some parts of their class. Also, who knows if he'll start as a freshman because we want him as a DT, and he's not large enough to play there just yet.

That is what I was thinking about the Juco's but I figured that I would throw it out there just in case. Hopefully we can get Dunlap, we'll have to see though, I would be interested to see what GH has to say from Flordia's viewpoint.

ive wanted Dunlap from the start of this recruiting season. 2 reasons why: 1)He is a Beast of an athlete, very fast and very strong. he will be a good one eventually in his college career.2) i really want us to have the inside track to his teammate Robert Quinn, who from everyone that i have talked to is better than Dunlap. and if Dunlap commits to us we will have a pretty nice lead for Quinns services as well.

JUCO Receiver Names USC Favorite
By Phil Kornblut
WR Larry Freeman (6-2 215) of Pearl River JC, MS will make his official visit to USC November 18th. And the Gamecocks have moved to the front with the native of Fort Meade, FL. "I talk to them about two times a week," Freeman said. "Coach Spurrier Jr. calls every now and then and I hear a lot from my recruiter coach Gillespie. They text me a lot. They tell me since I'm a December graduate, I can come in early and learn all the plays. They said that if Sidney Rice decides to go to the league, I'm the guy that can come in and take his spot." Freeman said he's also looking at Tennessee, Kansas State and South Florida for possible visits. Through seven games Freeman had 35 catches for 400 yards and 3 touchdowns, but he said he's been playing a lot of quarterback in recent weeks, so he hasn't added that much to his stats.

From his 30 offers he is also looking at Louisville, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, UCLA and Ole Miss. He does not have a favorite but has real interest in USC. "I see a lot of Florida boys there at South Carolina," he said. "It seems like a very good atmosphere. And they have one of the best coaches in the country. That's a growing program and they like to play a lot of freshmen." Bynes said his teammate, OL Branden Curry (6-6 300), plans to visit USC the same weekend. It's No Doubt With Allen
By Phil Kornblut
The playoffs are the only thing standing in the way of DB Antonio Allen (6-1 195) of Ocala, FL making a commitment to USC. "It's South Carolina all the way," Allen said Sunday night. Allen said he talked with Gamecock recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. Saturday. His teammate, WR Dion Lecorn (6-0 205) also is close to a Gamecock commitment according to Allen. "I think so," he said. "I told him we need to go ahead and commit. He said let's wait until after the season. Even if he changes his mind, I won't change mine." Allen is also hearing from Central Florida and South Florida and has a visit scheduled with UCF for December 9th. In 11 games this season Allen has 5 interceptions.
Aiken Set On Five Visits

ATH Kamar Aiken (6-2 205) of Hollywood, FL is set on all five of his official visits though he has just one date in place. He will visit USC December 9th and will also set dates with Central Florida, Florida, Florida State and NC State. Aiken said he does not have a favorite and the schools are recruiting him with equal intensity. He is being recruited for safety and receiver. He did not attend the USC-Florida game Saturday as he had planned because his coach wanted him to stay home while his team is in the playoffs.

Broyles Sets Up USC Visit
By Phil Kornblut
DB Ryan Broyles (5-11 170) of Norman, OK has settled on December 2nd for his official visit to USC. Broyles said he talked with his Gamecock recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. Friday and the coach suggested that date because it will be one of their bigger recruiting weekends. Broyles has visited Texas A&M, Michigan State and Texas Tech. He said he will also take a visit to Tennessee in December. He is also considering Oklahoma State and Arkansas. Broyles will attend the Oklahoma at Oklahoma State game. He does not have a favorite. Broyles season ended last Friday. He had 68 tackles and 6 interceptions on defense, while on offense he caught 44 passes for 900 yards and he scored a total of 23 touchdowns.

Well, hopefully these players can see our season as we gamecock fans do, a season that had we not given teams such a huge early lead, not tipped away a touchdown per game, etc we could very well be looking at a very different season.

USC, Clemson Eyeing Ohio Punter
By Phil Kornblut
USC and Clemson are showing serious interest in P/PK Aaron Bates (6-1 190) of New Concord, OH. "I hear from both of them about once a week," Bates said. "Both want me as a punter. South Carolina is trying to figure out if they have a scholarship and Clemson is trying to figure out if I am the right guy. They offered a guy from California but he doesn't seem to be showing much interest." Bates made an unofficial visit to USC for the Tennessee game. He has offers from Ohio and Purdue and plans officials withi both. He's also hearing from West Virginia and Missouri. Bates said there is no favorite. He talked with his Clemson recruiter Chris Rump Monday night. This season Bates averaged 43.4 yards per punt and was 9-15 on field goals with a long of 50. He hit two others from 48 yards. And 90% of his kickoffs were touchbacks.

Highly recruited Dunlap offers another dimension
By KEVIN MELTON
Fort Dorchester's Carlos Dunlap has 104 total tackles, 16 sacks, 14 quarterback hurries and six pass breakups this season
Imagine being a bowling pin and seeing a ball barreling down the lane at you full speed. The impact is going to be intense, but there's nothing you can do about it.
That must have been what the Summerville kickoff team was thinking when Fort Dorchester's 6-foot-7, 240-pound Carlos Dunlap headed up field with the football.
On Oct. 27, Dunlap -- a defensive end for the North Charleston school -- returned the opening kick 95 yards for a touchdown.
"Our team needed to get the game off to a good start," Dunlap said.
Summerville ended up winning the game 27-12, but afterwards everyone was buzzing about Dunlap's freakish athletic ability.
"He is just so fast," Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said on his decision to use Dunlap as a kick returner.
"It's unique for someone his size to run a sub 4.5 (in the 40-yard dash). I just thought, he's a playmaker and he wanted to do it. I don't know if a lot of people would want to hit him. He brings another dimension."
Known for his dominance on defense, Dunlap has 16 sacks and 104 tackles -- including 34 for loss -- heading into Friday's second-round playoff game at Stratford.
He is also a member of the Patriots' punt block team and was the team's second-leading scorer in 2005.
Earlier this month, Rivals.com promoted Dunlap to the No. 1-ranked overall player in the state, passing Byrnes quarterback Willy Korn.
The national recruiting service also tagged him with a five-star rating.
Dunlap hasn't verbally committed to a school, but he has been contacted by South Carolina, Clemson, Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, LSU, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech among others.
On Jan. 4, Dunlap will play in Rivals' East-West All-Star Football Game in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
He was not chosen for this year's Shrine Bowl but did receive an invitation to the 59th Annual S.C. Automobile Dealers Association North-South All-Star Football Game, which will be held at Coastal Carolina University on Dec. 9.
"I know my hard work has paid off," Dunlap said of his selection. "It's an honor and one lifetime goal achieved."
Although pleased with the invitation, Dunlap went to his head coach to possibly pass up his roster spot so that a couple of his teammates could be considered.
"(Carlos) came to me and said, 'Wouldn't it be better if two of my teammates could go since I already have scholarship offers,'" LaPrad said. "That not only shows what kind of teammate he is, but what kind of person he is."

Matthews dominant on both sides
By KEVIN MELTON
Cliff Matthews committed to South Carolina a couple of weeks after the Gamecocks fell to Auburn.
Although South Carolina lost to then-No. 2 Auburn 24-17 back on Sept. 28, the Gamecocks picked up a huge victory off the field.
Cheraw's Cliff Matthews, a potential recruit high on coach Steve Spurrier's radar, was at the game, checking out the Gamecocks.
Within a couple of weeks, the 6-5, 230-pound defensive end alerted Spurrier that he was ready to play his college football in Columbia.
"I heard Coach Spurrier say that (they) were one defensive end away from winning (the Auburn) game," Matthews said. "I saw it with my own eyes."
Matthews, rated the 93rd-best prospect in the nation by Rivals.com, has 98.5 tackles, 12 for a loss and 11.5 sacks, heading into Friday's 2A home playoff game against Manning. He also has 13 receptions for 323 yards at tight end.
"He's dominant on both sides of the ball," Cheraw coach Johnny White said. "Pass rushing is his best skill. He puts a lot of pressure on other teams since he's such a force."
Matthews was personally recruited by Spurrier, despite the USC coach's notorious history of pursuing offensive standouts only.
"In a way, I was excited about such a thing," Matthews said. "I liked his history in coaching at Duke and Florida."
Matthews will participate in this year's Shrine Bowl on Dec. 16 at Gibbs Stadium. He will join past Cheraw players Dale Hatcher, a former NFL punter, and Rod Mitchell, a two-sport star at Clemson, who participated in the game.
"It's an honor," he said. "It's something we try to do every year at Cheraw as a tradition."
Even though Matthews is considered dominant on the football field, basketball is his first love. Also a member of the basketball team, he averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds last season and lists Michael Jordan as one of his role models.
"(Jordan) played through when he was hurt and gave it all he had," he said. "I compare myself to MJ because I give it all I got each and every time out."
By the way, another favorite role model of Matthews was the Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, due to what he accomplished during his term.
"That's a shock to me," White said. "Cliff will surprise you with some things he says, though."

According to ESPN's recruiting rankings dated today (11/15/06), both Miami and FSU are in the top 5 in the Nation.
Clemson is tied with Bama way back at 21st....... (that puts them at 4th in the ACC)
In fact, CU only has 2 players ranked in ESPN's Top 150 out of their 18 recruits. USC has twice that with 4 out of our 11 being in ESPN's Top 150.

ESPN always had Lou Holtz ranked in the top 10-15 every year. You see how that turned out. Not knocking Lou but there were a lot of overrated players that led to those rankings that just didn't pan out. I know that happens everywhere but we really seemed to get more than our fair share of flops for several years. Funniest thing I see about this list is Texas has 23 commits, 12 are in the ESPN top 150 (almost double any other school), and they are number 6. That makes absolutely no sense. I think our last 2 coaches put way too much stock in the ranking system. From what I have heard Lawing is really high on McKnight and we are also high on Addison Williams who are not that highly rated. Look at this years crew and we have a 3 star rb starting in the secondary and a 3 star in Eric Norwood who is just an exciting player. This coaching staff does a lot more leg work before they make an offer. I was convinced by the end of Brad Scott's tenure that he would make an offer without ever seeing a kid based on his stats.

Please, please, please don't buy into ESPN rankings. They are a joke, and they are certainly not one of the major players when it comes to recruiting. Tom Lemming's football recruiting services are pretty much dead, and they have been slowly dying for years. It gets worse and worse each season. We are not at the top of the conference as of now, but we will be near the top in February. How can a class that's not even half full (Carolina, F$U, etc.) be ahead of Texas or Florida, which are not only close to being full, but are loaded with not just stellar players but quality guys to fill in the gaps? We are solid from top to bottom, but we don't have the numbers these other schools have.

Yeah you can pretty much stop subscribing to the star rankings because of this staff. Eric Norwood was not highly sought after. Heck, we stole him from Oklahoma State. What big name prospect from the state of Georgia leaves the southeast for Oklahoma State. Emanuel Cook did not play one day at safety before he got here, yet he's been as solid as they come. Eventually, he'll be moved to outside linebacker. The coaches absolutely LOVE McKnight. Clemson fans can say all they want, but we didn't offer him just to get Travian. This kid is going to be a player for us. In other news, Kyle Nunn got bumped up to a 3-star prospect, and Cliff Matthews moved up to the #2 WDE in the country. Spurrier has the ability to make a kid play above his ability because of his game plans (see last week, as there was no reason why we should have been on the same field as Florida in terms of current on the field talent). If you give this staff quality depth, which they did not have when they got here, then watch out. This is going to be the class that does it.
The thing about Lou was that he would sign all of these top name guys, and then they would never even make it to campus. Have any of you heard of a defensive tackle named Randy Jackson? I didn't think so. Randy Jackson was a 5-star prospect who signed with us and never made it to campus. I looked back through some of Holtz's recruiting classes and saw one class, which is still supposed to be on campus, that has lost 16 guys either due to them being JUCOs, drop outs, transfers, or guys who did not qualify. People can say that Lou did a great job recruiting here, and that may be true, but one area where Lou failed was actually getting the guys here and getting them to stay here. Every program, regardless of the coach, has attrition, but Lou's attrition was unacceptable.

Wb- on Holtz's recruiting classes you took the words right out of my mouth. I was going to pretty much say exactly what you said, it wasn't lack of quality, just inablity to get them to Columbia.
Every year we have the argument about star rankings; they are mearly guidelines to help you quickly infer about the prospect, not the end all story on them. That being said you can usally count on a 5-star playing better then a 2 or 3 star, there will always be exceptions but the general rule is 5-stars are studs and you want as many of them as you can have, 4 stars also. But once again there are always the 2 and 3 stars that are hidden or underatted gems.

I couldn't agree more with most of what you said, but you're mistaken about Jackson. I know that he played here, he just never made a difference. He played for us in the 2002 season and had 13 tackles, and then in the 2003 season and had 7 tackles. How's that for a 5 star?

Elder believes he has an offer from SC State while USC has been showing interest. Gamecock recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. was at his school to meet with him about three weeks ago. Elder says he's primarily looking at USC and SC State. This season he has rushed for 1939 yards and 27 touchdowns inn 12 games.

Brimfield Has Three Visits Planned
By Phil Kornblut
DL Will Brimfield (6-5 290) of Hunter-Kinard-Tyler has scheduled official visits with NC State December 2nd, Tennessee January 13th and North Carolina January 20th. He is also considering setting a visit with USC. Brimfield said the Gamecocks, Tar Heels and the Vols are showing the most interest. The former UNC commitment said he was not really affected by the hiring of Butch Davis as the new head coach. "I don't know coach Davis," he said. "I've heard some good things about him. I've got to see for myself." Brimfield said he does not have a favorite. He finished the season with 88 tackles and 12 sacks. He was not picked for an all star game because of a dislocated shoulder which will require surgery.
USC Hoping To Impress GMA Trio

On Recruiting
Published: November 17, 2006
USC has had great success recruiting players from Georiga Military JC in recent years and the Gamecocks hope to continue that trend this weekend as the trio of DE Jarius Wynn (6-5 273), OL Vince Vance (6-7 300) and DE Corvey Irvin (6-4 275) make their official visits. Wynn said he will be the driver for the trip and the three should arrive around 4:00 PM. Wynn knows what he wants to look at while on the USC campus. "Getting to know the coaches, look at the depth chart, academics, and getting to know the players," he said. Wynn has made an official visit Tennessee. He, Vance and Irvin are scheduled to visit Georgia November 25th. Wynn said he will also set dates with Auburn and Florida. He does not have a favorite. Friday will be the final day of school for the three. They have cleared out their dorm rooms and will return to their respective homes after the weekend. All three are on track to graduate in December.

We could, but it really sounds like we just flat our aren't going after him anymore; almost like we no longer want him at all. I hate it for him. I've talked with him before, and he really is a good kid. The thing I hate is that I think he's going to get the same treatment at F$U and Auburn. I guess he should have committed after his visit because he is still just as high on us now as he was when. This may not have happened to him if that were the case.

The staff has now adopted a "Vance or Nothing" approach in terms of the offensive line. Look for them to press that upon Vince this weekend, although a commitment from any of the GMC boys is highly unlikely. However, I expect a commitment from Larry Freeman because I've heard our staff is going to put on the full court press for Freeman's services this weekend. I also would bet that Joseph Hills will leave Columbia with Carolina as his leader this weekend.

Not sure why we are taking a "Vance or nothing" approach as of now.
I do understand why we dropped a sure commitment from Edenfield, but now we are relegated to apply the "full court press" on a OT that is only 3 stars and has a college choice list of: KY, Texas Tech, ECU, Baylor and Troy????
OK, he does also have LSU and UGA on his list, but have they offered?
Don't get me wrong, I trust Spurrier and staff and if this is who they want, then I hope we get them, but don't buy into the fact that "stars" aren't important. Sure they aren't guarantees and you have to get them on campus, but the big boys have players with stars and tahts why they stay at or near the top year in and year out. We can point to exceptions as there are exceptions to every rule, but a coach would rather a class full of 4 and 5 star All Americans over a class full of 2 and 3 star recruits any day of the week.
Also, with the ranking of the recruiting classes..... they do not typically go by just the numbers of recruits. At the end of the year you will see some classes with smaller numbers of commitments ahead of large classes. It is not about quantity, it is about quality.

First, Edenfield dropped to 3-star status recently. Coaches don't buy into the star system. Vance has been offered by LSU and UGA, and he plans to visit at least UGA, if not both. He can also play three years, as he was redshirted at GMC.

They really don't buy into the star system. Coaches don't go after the talent because of what Rivals and Scout say. They go after the talent because they are excellent at scouting.

With our coaches taking the Vance or nothing approach (full-court press), that should tell you something. They are impressed with this young man. He has only played OL one year. That affects the star system. Our coaches on the other hand, know talent when they see it. If this young man joins us, you will see plenty of him next year.
WB, I can't wait to hear what you find out. Someone that was at the game today (and saw the recruits) had the impression that the GMA trio would commit before the end of the week. Before I buy into that, I would like to hear what you find out. I like your connections!

The Vance or Nothing approach has a lot to do with the way our line has progressed this season, the guys we redshirted, and the guys we already have committed.
I don't know how likely a commitment is from the GMC guys is, especially since they are going to UGA next weekend. However, I was told today that they are going to press hard for a commitment from all 5 official visitors this weekend. If one offers a verbal, then there's no telling if a domino effect will occur. I still say the GMC trio holds off, but I will certainly let y'all know if I hear anything.

On Recruiting
Published: November 19, 2006
WR Larry Freeman (6-2 215) of Pearl River JC, MS committed to USC Sunday during his final meeting with head coach Steve Spurrier at the conclusion of his official visit. "They treated me good, I felt like I was at home," Freeman said. "They have a real good team. They need another go to receiver and I bring that to the table." Freeman has 40 catches for 500 yards and 5 touchdowns this season. He has also spent time playing quarterback. Freeman also said he expects WR Joseph Hills of Bradenton, FL to commit to USC. Hills also made his official visit this weekend.

Georgia Military JC teammates DE Jariuis Wynn (6-5 273), DE Corvey Irvin (6-4 275) and OL Vince Vance (6-8 320) have wrapped up their official visits to USC and will be heading to their respective homes later Sunday. All three said they had good visits and are strongly considering the Gamecocks. "They are telling me I can come in and start if I work hard," Vance said. "I'm going to take my other visits and then make my decision." Vance will visit Georgia next weekend and he also plans to set dates with Auburn and Florida. He does not have a favorite. "I loved all the coaches and the players," Irvin said. "I really like South Carolina. I'll know by next week after I take my Georgia visit." Irvin also has a visit scheduled for Alabama December 9th and he said he might take that. "I liked it, it was real nice," Vance said. "I liked the whole thing. "I'm going to wait until I go to Georgia and make my decision then. Right now it's Georgia and South Carolina." Vance will join Wynn and Irvin on official visits to Georgia next weekend

I have a few things to report. My buddy who gave the tour called me this afternoon and really wanted to give me a dissertation on why Spurrier wasn't going anywhere, so I didn't get a whole lot out of him in terms of recruits, even though he was preaching to the choir in terms of his opinions on Spurrier. Now that the rumors have died, I'm sure I'll get more from him tomorrow. He did say that on the whole, the guys were really quiet. Larry Freeman's comment about Joseph Hills could be true in the form of a silent commitment, as Hills was decked out in Carolina attire today. I see him committing officially after his trip to Georgia. Hills ranked his visit an 11.5 on a scale of 0-10 today.
As for the GMC trio, we're just going to have to wait until after their upcoming visits. I honestly see us getting Vance and Wynn, and I wouldn't be shocked to see us land Irvin, too. The Brinkleys are a big help, but getting all three could be a tough thing to do. Who knows? The guys were tight lipped, but I expect to see some movement next week, as the trio plans to enroll at their respective school(s) in January.

Someone heard Garcia on one of the midlands radio shows (I don't get it but I'm sure you guys know which one I'm talking about), and he dismissed the Spurrier to Miami rumor as well. According to Garcia, Spurrier called Garcia's dad and assured him that he wasn't leaving...he also said something to the effect of "some retard started a rumor." IF Garcia commits...this bodes well for us keeping Spurrier. The fact that he hasn't committed as of yet keeps me a little nervous on the subject. In all fairness, the poster also stated that Garcia all but admitted he was coming to SC.

It won't happen. Phone calls during the quiet or dead periods are secondary violations. We will self report them and repremand the coach, and because of Spurrier's reputation for running a clean program, we will survive this. Plus, it hasn't even been confirmed that the records show actual calls. They say we had two calls to Robertson's family. Well, Carolina is only admitting one call because the other one was a text message, which is allowed.

Garcia Sets USC Visit

QB Stephen Garcia (6-3 218) of Tampa saw his high school career end last Friday night with a one point playoff loss. Garcia finished his senir season with 2800 passing yards, 29 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Garcia is now focusing on the next phase of his career which he strongly hints will be at USC. Garcia scheduled his official visit with the Gamecocks for December 2nd after talking with Steve Spurrier Monday night. And he said a commitment could be made during the weekend. "That could be possible," Garcia said. He added he might take official visits to Oklahoma and Auburn. Sunday he is scheduled for home visits from Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron. Garcia is academically eligible to enroll in college in January and is considering doing so.

if possible i want blake to lead us at qb and let garcia redshirt and learn the system...
Mitchell could be great but will he be able to develop the consistency needed? An improved OL will give him the chance. Who knows, he may yet develop into more than most of us believed. If so, then in '07 we're going to have Smelley as backup and Garcia a redshirt, more than likely.

You honestly believe that??? It was on Clemson's website....come on
As W-B states, I doubt it will happen, but never say never....
They did speculate on Sports Talk (Phil Kornblut's radio show) that it is possible...... albeit unlikely.
Let me just say this, be very glad that Spurrier is head coach now and not Lou Holtz. The way the NCAA was after Lou, this minor violation might have gotten us the death penalty.

Also, it would be nice if Garcia deided not to take other visits and would commit this week prior to the Clemson game.
With all the crap we have went through negatively this week, a commitment from him could get us back on track and even help the mood going into the CU game.

I think it would help the fans mood, but a commitment from a high schooler would have very little impact on the team's performance in my opinion.
Also, here's the proof that Spurs is headed to Miami:

Freeman Chooses The Gamecocks
By Jonathan Jolley
Posted Nov 19, 2006
Pearl River (Poplarville, MS) standout wide receiver Larry Freeman made an official visit to South Carolina over the weekend, and after enjoying his time on campus, he decided to pull the trigger and commit to the Gamecocks. Freeman chose USC over offers from Tennessee, Arkansas, Iowa State, and Kansas State.
Freeman, who is rated a 4-star prospect by Scout.com, shared why he decided to commit to the Gamecocks.
“Yeah, I committed to South Carolina. They treated me good, and they treated me like family. I felt at home last night when I went with one of the receivers, Kenny (McKinley), and he showed me a good time. Me and him got real close. He treated me like we’d been knowing each other for a while. The coaches and everybody treated me good. When I went to the game on Saturday, the fans were screaming out my name and stuff. That made me feel real good.”
Freeman, who weighs in at 6’3 and 220 pounds, possesses a unique combination of size and speed for a receiver, and he believes he can make an early impact at South Carolina.
“They want me to come in right away and start. They don’t know if (Sidney) Rice is going to go to the NFL or not, but any way it goes, they say right now they’ve got two good receivers and they need a third one. They say they want me to come in and catch a lot of balls for them.”
Head Coach Steve Spurrier has said repeatedly in recent weeks that he believes this team is capable of competing for an SEC Championship next season, and Freeman shares that belief.
“I think we’re going to win an SEC Championship. They’re real close, and like they were saying, they need a couple more game breakers like myself. I think that’s what I bring to the table. I think we’ll be real good next year.”
Lastly, Freeman wanted to share a message with the South Carolina fans.
“Tell them to get ready. I’m going to put on a show for them next year.”
Freeman projects as a December graduate, and thus will have the opportunity to go through spring practice with Gamecocks. He has three years to play two after spending his first two years at junior college.
Freeman becomes the Gamecocks twelfth commitment of the 2007 recruiting class, and he joins Michael Bowman and Matt Clements as wide receivers being brought in with this class.

Auburn Verbal Updates his Recruitment
By Chris Sherman
ScoutSouth.com
Posted Nov 25, 2006
Scout.com four-star defensive back Ryan Williams was in Mobile Friday night at the McGill-Toolen versus Prattville game. Williams, an Auburn verbal, was watching the game from the sidelines as his B.C. Rain squad did not make the AHSAA play-offs.
“We started off real strong," Ryan Williams said. "We beat Daphne. We came back and beat Spanish Fort, which was really a gimme-game. I think then a couple of us got the big head, and it sort of went down hill. I mean we won some and lost some, but the main thing is we just lost. As for me personally, I had a real good season. I had over 600 yards receiving, had one pick (interception). I only got thrown to one time though. I had four punt returns for touchdowns and one kick-off return for a touchdown. I just had a good season."
Williams gave his verbal pledge to the Auburn Tigers back in August and was asked if he was still a solid commitment.
“Yeah, but I am still going to take all my official visits. I am still open to recruitment. West Virginia, South Carolina, Clemson and Alabama are still recruiting me pretty hard. Alabama, Auburn, West Virginia and Clemson will get visits from me," he said.
Besides Auburn, Williams said Alabama and South Carolina were two favorite schools as well.
“I have a good relationship with the coaches at Alabama," he said. "I feel like I could go there and make a difference. They are losing a lot of spots in the secondary.”
“I have family up there," Williams said of South Carolina. "I feel like I can go immediately and play there. I know I can play. I’m not trying to put them down or anything, but I just think I can go there and play.”
“I will not know for sure what I am going to do until signing day."
The secondary star's football season has ended, and he is spending his time wisely preparing for the next level.
“I have been working out. I have started back working out, trying to get stronger. I’m just enjoying this post season right now," Williams said.

Dunlap Takes In Tennessee Game
By Phil Kornblut
DE Carlos Dunlap Jr. (6-6 245) of Fort Dorchester made an unofficial visit to Tennessee Saturday for the Kentucky game according to his father. "He's more confused than ever," Carlos Dunlap Sr. said. "Everytime you turn around someone is throwing their hat in the circle. He has so many choices he doesn't know what to do. He wants to see the academic side of the universities. He wants to see what the school itself is all about." Dunlap Sr. said Michigan is the latest big time program to start to show serious interest. Dunlap Jr. has offers from Clemson, USC, Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, Louisville, NC State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech. He made an unofficial visit to Florida for the USC game and Florida defensive coordinator Charley Strong has talked with him about making an in home visit. Dunlap has not decided on his official visits. This season he finished with 126 tackles with 19 sacks and 38 tackles for loss.

Vance Chooses Bulldogs
By Phil Kornblut
OL Vince Vance (6-8 320) of Georgia Military JC committed Tuesday to the Georgia Bulldogs over USC. "I just felt like I had a better chance of playing at Georgia," Vance said.
I'm disappointed we didn't get him, but I must admit I enjoy hearing him say he felt he had a better chance of playing at Georgia. I know, I know...that statement is likely false, but it is still nice to hear that a guy says we have a solid enough group of linemen ready to go that he's more likely to play right away at UGa.
Williams-Brice
11-28-2006, 02:37 PM
Georgia, I believe (and please correct me if I'm wrong), is losing both tackles. They brought in 7 O-Linemen last year, and Vance is their 7th O-Line commitment this year. He will probably get a better chance to compete for a starting spot at Georgia, but he also has a better chance of getting lost in the depth chart over there, too.
We will not be signing another lineman in this class, unless the staff finds the right one for this year. We'll probably sign as many O-Linemen next year as we did last year.

Spurrier Visits With Trinity Catholic Standouts
By Phil Kornblut
USC coach Steve Spurrier spent much of his Monday in Ocala, FL where he watched the Trinity Catholic High School team practice in preparation for their state championship game this weekend. Spurrier later had in home visits with WR Dion Lecorn (6-0 205) and DB Antonio Allen (6-1 195). Both are strong USC leans and appear to be close to committing according to Trinity Catholic assistant coach John Brantley III. "I don't think they committed last night, but I think they are very close," Brantley said. "South Carolina is at the top of those guys' lists. I think they are going to be Gamecocks. They'll probably wait until after the season. Dion is talking about going to LSU (for a visit) and maybe Antonio, too." Brantley said the staff also encourged Spurrier to take a close look at RB Rudell Small (5-10 205). He's rushed for 1100 yards and 20 touchdowns in eight games. "He's a kid just like Emmitt Smith," Brantley said. "He's not going to wow you at a combine but you watch his tampe and he set himself apart." Small has offers from Central Florida, South Florida and Temple and
