Macklin Has Eyes On USC
By Phil Kornblut
If things work out academically, ATH Josh Macklin (5-11 165) of Huntsville, AL expects to sign with USC in February. "I talked to coach Cooper a couple of weeks ago," Macklin said. "He said if I have all my academics straight on Signing Day I can sign with them. And that's what I'm thinking." Macklin said the Gamecocks like him as a receiver. He said he is doing well academically but has yet to take the SAT or ACT. USC has made him a conditional offer based on his academic standing. He is also getting interest from Auburn, Illinois, Middle Tennessee State (where his brother plays), Kentucky, Florida, Marshall and Colorado. He hopes to get to USC for the Middle Tennessee game. This season Macklin has 11 catches for 323 yards and 3 touchdowns in five games. As a safety he has 22 tackles with 3 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. He also has returned 6 kickoffs for 185 yards and a 94 yard touchdown.

It lists our standing with the top prospects left on our board and gives predictions as to whether or not they will sign with us. It is being split up into parts (first being offensive skill players). I will try to post a more in depth synopsis of what the article says/predicts late today or tomorrow, but I have to get caught up at work before I can play.

These pay sites are a total joke though PC. All of these *Insider* stories are just time/space fillers.
See, there's not a lot going on right now in USC's recruiting world, so to maintain subscribers and attract potential subbies, they CREATE the news.
You can always tell when they're hurting for business because they post worthless articles like "Who's Favorite" and stuff like that.
Sad....So sad.
USC In Running For JUCO Receiver
By Phil Kornblut
WR Demetrius Byrd (6-2 195) of Pearl River JC, MS says his three top schools right now are USC, Tennessee and LSU with the Vols and Tigers out front. But he is interested in USC and wants to make an official visit. He exchanged text messages with Gamecock receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr. Thursday night. Byrd has not scheduled any of his official visits. His favorites have offered along with Ole Miss, Mississippi State, South Florida, Iowa State, Kansas State and Arkansas. The Miami native will graduate in May. In five games this season he has 20 catches for 330 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Overall I agree with you neo. But I like to be able to look at their video on those sites. So I can make my own decision on whether their good or not. Otherwise I just have to rely on the number of stars. But thanks to you and WB (though since he got in trouble insider info has become almost nonexistent) I get my fill of fresh insider info.

Nice little cheap shot there. I can remember that day. You pouted like the world was over.
Well there goes the whole insider info thing.
Don't worry about it. You'll still get insider info. It just won't in the same capacity.
As in......?
As in he'll tell us what he can but he ain't risking his job or position within the university. (I'm assuming)
I understood that but I am still trying to figure out how giving us info that you took someone on a tour is something the university wouldn't want out. Some sites like Kornbult's, rivals, and scout live off that kind of info, so how is that detrimental? Now if you told us the super secret playbook.....
Like NEO said, recruiting is slow right now. It's slow for every team. A commitment here; a de-commitment there. If NEO or I hear any inside info, then y'all are the first to know. Nothing is going on right now.
Edenfield Still Has USC #1
By Phil Kornblut
OL Thomas Edenfield (6-6 295) has been favoring USC since his official visit in September and he said Sunday night that remains the case. "I haven't been anywhere since South Carolina," he said. "I talked to coach Spurrier Jr. about two days ago. He just wanted to get an update and see how I was doing." Edenfield said he might take an official visit to Auburn this coming weekend. He will also set a visit with Florida State. Southern Cal is also showing interest along with Louisville, Ole Miss, LSU, Nebraska and Florida. He does not plan to announce a decision until Signing Day.

JUCO Receiver Likes USC
By Phil Kornblut
WR Larry Freeman (6-2 215) of Pearl River JC, MS says USC is one of his favorite schools right now. "They throw the ball and I want to go somewhere where they spread the ball around," Freeman said. "I've talked to coach Spurrier, Spurrier Jr. and Gillespie. I talked to coach Spurrier last week. And I talk to coach Gillespie every week." Freeman also has Iowa State up front as a co-leader with the Gamecocks. He also has offers from Tennessee, Kansas State, Arkansas, South Florida and Central Florida. Freeman said he's looking at a possible official visit to USC November 18th but that depends on his schedule.

It wasn't really a cheap shot, I was actually making a joke, abliet maybe not a good one, but I was tired so there you go. I don't remember pouting, I was just curious how you were going to still be able to give insider info, when it might jepordize your job, which by the way I consider (any job of course) way more important then any insider info you could ever post. So maybe you woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning but I wasn't attacking you, taking a shot at you, or crying because you couldn't tell us your little secrets.

He is scheduled to visit Florida October 28th and will also set officials with USC, Tennessee, LSU and Florida State. Big TE Sill Looking At USC
By Phil Kornblut
USC is still in the picture with TE Wes Saunders (6-6 270) of Durham, NC. He is scheduled to make an official visit with the Gamecocks December 2nd. He has visited Louisville and will visit Penn State this weekend. He also plans to visit Wake Forest and is not set with a fifth visit. Clemson and Maryland are possibilities though he says Clemson hasn't been in touch that much. He's also considering NC State and North Carolina. Saunders says USC is firmly in the running. "They are pretty much the heaviest recruiting me right now," he said. "I hear from coach Chatham every other day." Saunders was at the Florida State-NC State game last week. He has been to two games at North Carolina

Williams Still Hot On USC & Clemson
By Phil Kornblut
DB Ryan Williams (5-11 190) of Mobile, AL committed to Auburn in early August but he said Monday night he has not ended his recruiting. "It's more of a soft verbal," he said. "I'm still talking with other schools. I'm open to anybody that wants to recruit me. I never did shut anyone down. It's just that when I went to Auburn I felt like I was at home. But my recruitment is still open." Williams has not scheduled any official visits and plans to starting doing so in a couple of weeks. He said he would like to schedule trips to USC, Clemson, West Virginia, Alabama and Auburn. He said he plans to talk with USC recruiter Ron Cooper soon and did talk to Clemson recruiter Vic Koenning a couple of weeks ago. He was at the LSU-Auburn game and will be at the Florida-Auburn game this weekend. So far this season Williams has 25 tackles and 1 interception which he returned 75 yards for a touchdown.

I really hope we get a big time TE at USC soon. Teams with really good TE's have a lot of success both at the college and pro level. I'm not saying that its a need but whenever you have a good TE it really helps out your offense. We need a decent TE who can both catch the ball and block. He dosen't have to be great at either but good at both. We have never really had a great TE at USC and its time we get one. I know we don't have a lot of scholarships but we need to some how get one in there. These walk-on TE's are really not getting the job done.
Williams-Brice
10-10-2006, 04:38 PM
We're not playing any walk-on tight ends. Jared Cook is playing the position well when you consider that he is a freshman who has never played the position before. We had a stud in the making in Jonathan Hannah, but he turned out to be a head case. Lou's Canadian experience has failed. Robert Pavlovic is one of the players on whom he took a chance, and that hasn't worked out. Andy Boyd is a walking injury. Give Jared Cook time. He's going to be a big part of this offense.
In terms of recruiting at the tight end position, one of our better chances is in Weslye Saunders. He's 6'5" 270, and could get bigger. He runs a 4.7 and has some amazing talents. We were the team to beat, but Penn State has made a push as of late. Getting him on campus will be a huge deal for us.
There are several others on our board, but our staff doesn't see the tight end position as a huge need for us this season. Like I said, Jared Cook is going to be a big part of this offense.
pc72687

I think Jared will be good eventually. He is doing well considering he spent his whole redshirt season at WR. And D-linemen are much bigger and harder to block then DBs so considering that he has done well. Spurrier even went as far as saying that Cook pass blocks "good" which is a compliment on this year's squad.

By Phil Kornblut
DE Cliff Matthews (6-5 230) of Cheraw has finalized his official visit date with USC for November 18th, the weekend the Gamecocks play host to Middle Tennessee State. Matthews earlier had talked about making the visit the weekend of the Arkansas game. Matthews made his official visit to Georgia last weekend and will schedule a visit with Clemson. He will choose one of those three and they are even at this point.

Maye Awaiting USC Offer
By Phil Kornblut
LB Brandon Maye (6-3 222) of Mobile, AL continues to talk weekly with USC recruiter Ron Cooper and is getting the indication that the Gamecocks are close to offering. He also thinks Georgia Tech and Arkansas are close to offering. Maye has offers from Southern Miss and Louisiana Lafayette. He is also hearing from Memphis, Kentucky, Purdue, Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Michigian State and Florida. His coach is sending out a highlight tape this week and he expects schools to respond to that soon. He favors USC, Auburn, Georgia, Arkansas and Southern Miss. Maye has been invited to the Emfinger All America Game in Orlando January 6th. This season he has 62 tackles with 2 sacks and he returned a fumble 65 yards for a touchdown. Maye says his teammate, DB Michael McNeil (6-3 200), is also looking at USC because of his involvement with the Gamecocks.

Stafford Checks Out Kentucky
By Phil Kornblut
DE D.J. Stafford (6-3 260) of LaGrange, GA made an official visit to Kentucky last weekend. "It was pretty cool, the players were alright," Stafford said. He has not scheduled any other visits but said Georgia likely will be his next one. Stafford said he continues to hear from USC and talked with defensive coordinator Ty Nix last week. He said he's not hearing very much from Clemson now. He does not have a favorite. His other offers include Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, LSU and Virginia Tech.

Broyles Tripping This Weekend
By Phil Kornblut
DB Ryan Broyles (5-11 170) of Norman, OK will make an official visit to Michigan State this weekend. He has also visited Texas A&M. He is scheduled for an official visit to USC October 28th but says he might switch that to Texas Tech and reschedule the Gamecocks. Broyles has been unofficially to Oklahoma State and says the Cowboys are recruiting him the hardest right now in terms of contact and intensity, but he says he does not have a favorite.

Page Picks Up More Offers
By Phil Kornblut
6-2 guard Lashay Page of Latta has added two more big offers to his list. Page says Tennessee and Florida have joined USC, Clemson, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and Florida State on his offer list. He says all of the offers are verbal. He has made unofficial visits to USC and Clemson and plans to go to Florida State and Wake Forest. He says USC and Wake Forest are his favorities among the offers and he also likes Connecticut though UConn is not showing real strong interest right now.

OK folks, is USC (the real one on the East coast that is) going to get Stephen Garcia?
A lot of folks claim he is a slient commitment to US(C) already.....
I think he would be crazy to go to either FLA or ClemPson because Tebow is the real deal and according to tater fans, Willy Korn has already locked up the Heisman for the next 4 years running.
That leaves us with a few teams to compete against for his services....
Does Ole Miss really stand a chance with this guy? Has he recently said who his leader is?
The silence is deafening......

Unfortunately I was unable to make the game due to massive amounts of studying that needed to be done. Luckily one of my neighbors has a projection TV and was showing the game in his backyard for friends so I was able to study outside and occassionally look up to watch the game at my neighbors. Grant Set With USC Visit
DE Uriah Grant (6-2 243) of Miramar, FL has scheduled an official visit to USC for January 12th. He is also down with Wisconsin for December 2nd and plans to set visits with LSU and Michigan State. For his fifth visit Grant said he's considering Missouri and Pittsburgh. He likes Missouri the most right now. "I just like their defense and their tenacity to the ball," he said. Grant said USC recruiter Robert Gillespie is supposed to scout him Friday night. He said he gets regular text messages from Gillespie and talks to him a good bit. Through six games this season Grant said he has around 40 tackles and 5 sacks. He's lost about 20 pounds and he said schools are now recruiting him for both defensive end positions.

The TRUTH is that we ARE A MIDDLE OF THE PACK TEAM, TRYING TO GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
The talent isn't what we need at Carolina yet, SOS knows it that’s why the team goals are set so low [win more than we lose].
We're 2 -3 years away from the talent-laden team that SOS wants. On the bright side the Freshmen and Soph. players are getting VERY VALUABLE ON THE FIELD TIME IN A TOUGH CONFERENCE.

Garcia Thinking Mid Year Enrollment
By Phil Kornblut
QB Stephen Garcia (6-3 218) of Tampa remains a very strong lean to USC though he won't make any public commitment for several weeks. And Garcia said Monday night he's giving strong consideration to graduating in December and enrolling in college for the spring semester. "I talked to coach Spurrier two weekends ago," Garcia said. "He told me he wants me to graduate early and start getting things going." Garcia has not been to a USC game this season but he's watched the Gamecocks on television at every opportunity focusing on the offense and the play of quarterback Syvelle Newton. "They are a good team and they are not at their potential yet," he said. "They are not there yet, but when they are they will be one of the top teams in the nation. I definitely like it (the offense) a lot. That's kind of what I do. I move around a lot and throw on the run." In eight games this season Garcia has thrown for 1700 yards and 18 touchdowns. Garcia said he will schedule his official visits after the season with USC, Oklahoma and Auburn for sure and possibly Ole Miss and Florida. He has been to a couple of Florida games and plans to be in Gainesvile next month for the USC game.
Wow this could be huge. I really hopes he graduates early and joins the football program in January. He will really get a jump start at learning the playbook and hopefully he is leading our team next year. He has really said and done all the right things so far that leads me to believe that we are going to get him. Hopefully he is something like Stafford of UGA in that he can learn the playbook early and is able to play 1st game next year, though Smelley will probably get the start.

Clemson and USC target RB Caleb King (6-1 207) of Atlanta has seen his season come to an end with a leg injury according to a report Monday night by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
By CARROLL ROGERS
Greater Atlanta Christian running back and top national prospect Caleb King is likely out for the season with a right leg injury he suffered in Friday night's win against Avondale, coach Jimmy Chupp said Monday.
"We're very concerned about him," Chupp said. "He'll probably miss the rest of the season."
Chupp said King had an MRI on Monday and was scheduled for a CT scan Tuesday. He declined to be specific about the exact nature of the injury, though he said earlier in the day that doctors had ruled out a tear of the medial or anterior cruciate ligament in King's knee.
"It may be season-ending, but not career-threatening," Chupp said.
King was hurt during the second quarter of Friday night's game on a pass play in which he came out of the backfield on a crossing route. He took a helmet to the lower leg on the play, Chupp said.
King was able to walk on his leg on the sideline, which seemed to allay fears. But King spent the weekend on crutches, Chupp said, and was still in pain on Monday.
Neither Caleb King nor his brother Andre King, a volunteer running backs coach for GAC, attended practice Monday. They could not be reached for comment.
"I talked to the doctor and to Caleb and to Andre," Chupp said. "Caleb and Andre are upbeat, but we are very concerned."
King will likely see his senior season at GAC end only seven games after his transfer from Parkview. He would not be expected back in time for any playoff games.
King rushed for 2,768 yards at Parkview last year, the best rushing total by a junior in Georgia high school history. This summer he transferred to GAC, for academic reasons, according to his family.
King is leading Gwinnett County with 939 yards rushing and is tied for the lead with 13 touchdowns. He hasn't missed a game in the three years he's played in Gwinnett since he transferred to Parkview from Columbia High after his freshman season.
The question now becomes how this affects his college recruiting. King is one of the most highly recruited prospects in the nation — he's rated the No. 3 running back in the country by Scout.com and No. 1 by Rivals.com — and he is still uncommitted.
King, who is being recruited by Georgia, Auburn, LSU and others, hasn't said where he will make his five official visits.
Also in doubt is King's availability to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, a national senior all-star team he was named to last week. The game is on Jan. 6.
GAC (6-1) has three regular season games left, including Friday night against Wesleyan.
A significant playoff run gets even tougher for the sixth-ranked Spartans who were already going without a Division I prospect at center; T-Bob Hebert has missed the last two games with a shoulder injury.
Offers Grow For Chester Junior
By Phil Kornblut
Junior ATH Charles Whitlock (5-11 170) of Chester has added more offers according to his coach Victor Floyd and now has invitations from Clemson, USC, Marshall, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina. "He hasn't been anywhere yet and he's pretty wide open," Floyd said. "Some like him as a wide receiver, some like him as a cornerback, and some like him as a quarterback." Whitlock is also getting interest from West Virginia and Wake Forest. Floyd said Whitlock plans to attend the Maryland at Clemson game November 4th.
Chester Seniors Updates
DB Marquis Coleman (6-1 180) now has offers from Kentucky, Marshall, Middle Tennessee and Toledo according to Floyd. He's also hearing from USC, Michigan and Alabama. He has been to Kentucky for an unofficial visit. And LB Brandon Nash (6-2195) has offers from Middle Tennessee, Newberry and Charleston Southern. He's also hearing from Georgia Tech, Wofford, Coastal Carolina, SC State and James Madison.
Allen, Lecorn Set 2nd Visits
By Phil Kornblut
DB Antonio Allen (6-1 195) of Ocala, FL said Monday night he and teammate WR Dion Lecorn (6-0 205) have scheduled official visits to Central Florida December 2nd. Both made official visits to USC in September and have no other visits scheduled. Both have been favoring USC, and for his part Allen said he's still big on the Gamecocks. "They're my number one school," Allen said. "But I'm still waiting to commit, waiting until Signing Day." Allen said he talked with recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. a couple of days ago. "I told him I was still favoring them and they were still number one," Allen said. "He said to make sure I take all my visits and make sure that I'm sure (about the decision)." Allen attendended the LSU-Florida game and isn't sure about other visits. Through eight games this season he has four interceptions.

Do we have a legitimate shot at Deonte Thompson. It seems like he's the state of Florida's version of Mark Barnes. Wont officially visit the in state schools, but everyone thinks he's staying in state.

Hopefully he is something like Stafford of UGA in that he can learn the playbook early and is able to play 1st game next year, though Smelley will probably get the start.
i honestly dont care if he comes to columbia early or not. he will more than likely be redshirted anyway with Smelley and Mitchell still on the team. as long as he signs the dotted line on febuary 2nd i will be happy.

we do have a legitimate shot. Spurrier coached his high school coach and many people are telling Thompson that his abilitys will be better utilized in Spurriers offense. we still have some ground to make up, but we do have a shot at getting him.

Well Mitchell wont be much of a factor for the QB position next year. If Garcia signs it will be either him or Smelley. If he does enroll early there might be a chance this guy plays early. He probably will get redshirted and that might be the worst thing that could happen to him I think. He would be stuck behind Smelley for 4 years, thats if Smelley plays up to his ability.

i wouldn't be saying all that...blake is still a factor for next year just b/c garcia comes here doesnt mean he will take 1st or 2nd string..he has to earn it..if garcia isn't good enough to play next year then he needs to redshirt ...if spurrier thinks blake should be 1st string next year good let him play and lets go and win....

Clements Set For USC Visit
By Phil Kornblut
WR Matt Clements (6-1 185) of Naples, FL is scheduled for his official visit to USC for the Tennessee game and he said Tuesday night that visit is a go. Clements made an official visit to Pittsburgh in early September and will set a date with West Virginia for January. He is down to those three. "They are all recruiting about the same," he said. "They are all saying they want me pretty bad. I don't have a favorite. I'll see how the visits go." Clements said he hears regularly from Gamecock recruiters Robert Gillespie and Steve Spurrier Jr. Clements played the first four games of the season at quarterback then missed the next two games after a dispute with his coach. He has played receiver since returning to the team.

Broyles Sets Third Visit
By Phil Kornblut
DB Ryan Broyles (5-11 170) of Norman, OK has scheduled an official visit to Texas Tech for October 28th when the Red Raiders take on Texas. Broyles was decided between Texas Tech and USC for that date and chose Tech because it's the one weekend his parents can go with him on a visit. He said he and Gamecock recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. are working on a date for his USC visit and he plans to set that soon. Broyles made an official visit to Michigan State last weekend. He visited Texas A&M in early September. He is undecided about a fifth official visit. He is also very interested in Oklahoma State and is hearing more from hometown Oklahoma though the Sooners have not offered. Through seven games Broyles said he has 6 interceptions and has scored 15 touchdowns.

He was saying we'll take three Tight ends this year, which I think was a mistake, I don't see any team taking 3 tight ends ever.
It seems Broyles has kinda cooled on us going by that report. I am curious why the staff wants a Juco WR, we already have some young ones and Neo has said that we have some big timers on the board silently already so why would we want a Juco one? I am not sure I see the coaching staff's logic on that one, now a Juco Olineman I could see.

We're shallow at the WR position in terms of quality depth. We need immediate help there. We'll bring in five guys, and the staff wants one of them to be a JUCO. They are very high on Freeman. It's a good call.
Matthews Gets Another Big Offer

Is it just me - or do we see annually an attempt by Bobby Bowden to get some of our top commits to reconsider. I see this as an obvious attempt on his part to help his son and Clemson. Every year, as Clemson loses a recruit to USC, there is an offer by Florida State. Bobby attempts to get in their ear, and if he can't get them to go to Clemson, he helps try to steer them away from USC.
Does anyone else see this?
PS - I am a long time reader, listener, and also a member. Very seldom do I write or comment - but this just boils me when this happens. I know it is not officially against NCAA rules, but certainly there is an attempt to help little Tommy on the part of Daddy.

6mgamecockfan, what you are suggesting is not the case. Stuff like that doesn't happen. Also, one thing to consider is the fact that FSU is very limited in the amount of guys they can bring in this year. I believe they only have 15 scholarships to give. Cliff is the #3 DE in the country. People are going to go after him, even if they are limited. Also, Clemson has outrecruited us for years. They don't need FSU to help them.

The whole Jason Barnes situation is kind of making me like him less and less. He doesn't seem to REALLY want to be a gamecock. I heard recently he was quoted to say he'd commit to the gamecocks IF UNC's coaches were fired. So...he's picking Bunting over Spurrier?

How were you feeling about Quintin Richardson, Travian Robertson, and Cliff Matthews before they committed to us? All of those guys were very verbal about having other schools in front of us before they surprisingly announced in our favor. It's October. Signing Day is three and a half months away. Give the kid a chance to make a decision. We're trying to get a kid away from his home state. He has several friends on the UNC team. I'm not going to hate on a kid for favoring his home team. If anything, be happy that he hasn't announced to this point. He's pretty much been leaning to UNC throughout most of the process, yet he hasn't committed to them. He's giving us a chance.
He's not going to pick Bunting over Spurrier. The quote from PK's site was not as comprehensive as the quote in the article on GamecockCentral. In the article over there, you could tell that Barnes is going to pick the school where he is most comfortable. He's not going to go to UNC if he's unsure about the future coaching staff. He likes the facilities at UNC better. He has more friends at UNC. He's willing to drop all of that if the coaching staff that he has a relationship with gets canned.
Don't dislike the kid for trying to make the best choice for him. If anything, respect him for giving us a chance. He could have pulled the trigger in UNC's favor many times. He's giving us an opportunity to make a move.
I agree with WB. I used to live just outside of Charlotte in a town called Monroe. Believe me, we're lucky to at least be considered by Barnes.
He plays at Independence HS right off of Independence Blvd in Charlotte. That's practically UNC's & NCSU's backyard and they don't let too much talent leave the state.
I had the honor of seeing both Chris Leak and Joe Cox play there. If we can develop that in-road at Independence, it will definitely pay dividends.
Fun fact: Inddependence HS has the 2nd longest winning streak ever in HS football. I believe the last time they lost was in the mid-late 90's.
They're lucky too. At Independence, they can actually recruit kids to come to that school to play football.

Korn was not sharp, he threw 3 interceptions and lost a critical fumble on his on 9 yd line. The rain helped Gaffney in the second half, that had 0 passing yards and ran the ball down Brynes throat. The quarteback at Gaffney, Malcom Long is a big kid. He is listed as 6-2, 210, and is very powerful. I'm surprised more schools are not recruiting him.

Sumter OL Kyle Nunn (6-6 280), who committed to Virginia Tech July 27th, has decommitted and reopened his recruiting his coach Paul Sorrells said Thursday night. "He called them a couple of days ago and told them he has decommitted," Sorrells said. Nunn was recently offered by Georgia according to Sorrells. He also has offers from USC, North Carolina and NC State. He has been to several USC games this season and the Gamecocks would appear to now be the frontrunners for the Shrine Bowl selection.
Pressley Is A Hokie
Sorrells also said Thursday night his QB Kendrick Pressley (6-0 170) is committed to Virginia Tech. Sorrells said Pressley actually committed to Tech early in the season. Tech is the only major offers for Pressley at this point. Sorrells said the Tech coaches have told Pressley he'll get a shot at quarterback but they view him as a multi-position athlete.

My peeps just called and said that the buzz on the vine is that if Bunting at UNC is fired, then Barnes will commit to USC.
That's one more 4-Star/RivalsTop100 player in the bank.
That was in his interview with Tony Morrell a few days ago. Isn't that what we were talking about recently? Also, Jason Barnes is only a 3-star. Thanks for the news though. If Bunting is gone, then we got a diamond in the rough. I'm looking forward to seeing Jason and Mark Barnes as Gamecocks.

I may be thinking of his Scout.com ranking. I know he's in the Top-100 of one of them. (Rivals/Scout)
Either way, Bunting is going to resign possibly as early as this weekend, so Barnes is ours.

Shrine Bowl RB Getting Strong USC Look
By Phil Kornblut
Carvers Bay RB Malcolm Elder (5-9 180) is on his way to another big season with 1300 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns in 8 games. He's been picked for the Shrine Bowl. As a junior Elder rushed for 2460 yards and 32 touchdowns. Elder has not yet been offered but USC has turned up its interest. "I'm getting most of my interest from South Carolina," Elder said. "I talked to coach Spurrier Sr. two nights ago. He just was asking how things were going. They sent me a letter asking for my SAT score and transcript." Elder said USC is his favorite right now and he'll make an unofficial visit for the Tennessee game. He has been to SC State for a game. He's also getting interest from Clemson, Michigan, North Carolina and Coastal Carolina.
Also At Carvers Bay
Carvers Bay DL Stephon Moore (6-5 245) has an offer from SC State and is getting some real interest from Tennessee according to his coach. He has talked to Vols recruiter Dan Brooks. He has been to SC State for a game and plans to make an unofficial visit to Tennessee. He's also hearing from Clemson, North Carolina, Hampton, Purdue and Auburn.

Carlos Dunlap's dad is furious. Carlos was not selected for the Shrine Bowl this year. His dad attributed it to a "good ole boy" system among the South Carolina High School coaches. Anyway, the important thing here is that Mr. Dunlap stated yesterday that if his son isn't good enough to represent the Lowcountry, then he isn't good enough to represent the state of South Carolina in college and that maybe his son should look elsewhere for college. He nearly committed to Florida this week.
Spurrier has already commented on the situation. He says parents should know that college coaches have no say in the selection process of these all star games. I hope cooler heads prevail in this because we really need Carlos Dunlap. Our staff was planning on turning up the heat on him right now, so if this was going to happen, then it could not have happened at a better time. Here's what I'm thinking: This staff overcame whatever garbage Clemson was telling Travian. This staff overcame whatever it was that sent us from 3rd to 1st with Cliff Matthews. It's good news that he didn't commit. Our staff can overcome this.
How did this kid not make the Shrine Bowl? It's all about politics; the same politics that kept Syvelle Newton (4-star) and Demetris Summers (5-star) out of the game. Something needs to be changed.

Dunlap doesn't have an offer from UF...at DE, he's at a disadvantage because the state of Florida is loaded with HT DL this year and Meyer likes to stay in-state as much as possible.

It's a soft verbal commitment. I haven't talked to them about that yet. I'm supposed to talk to coach Bowden Monday or Tuesday." Barnes To Set Notre Dame Visit
By Phil Kornblut
Notre Dame already has a commitment from Richland Northeast star Gary Gray and will get an official visit from RNE's other highly rated prospect WR Mark Barnes (6-3 195). Barnes said he plans to set a trip with the Irish for one of their remaining two home games, November 4th against North Carolina or two weeks later against Army. But the Irish currently are no better than third on his list. Barnes said USC is his current favorite by a small margin over Louisville. "It's because they talk about academics as my main priority," Barnes said. "Every school is about football, football, football, and they were worried about academics first, and that's what I like. I hear from them basically every day." Barnes will attend the USC-Tennessee game this weekend. Barnes said he will set official visits with USC and Southern Cal. He has visited Louisville. And he might visit Middle Tennessee State where his former USC recruiter Rick Stockstill is head coach. "I have to visit my man Stock," Barnes said.

Still a border battle for Barnes

Video: Jason Barnes quick clip
Talk about it in The Insiders Forum
Charlotte (N.C.) Independence three-star wide receiver Jason Barnes has helped lead his team to an unblemished record so far this season and is enjoying his time as the primary receiver in the Independence offense. On the recruiting front, it's still a two team race.
Jason Barnes is having a solid senior season for Independence.
"It's North Carolina and South Carolina," the 6-foot-3.5, 197-pound Barnes said. "I'm not considering any other schools. I like both of them a lot. This process has been tough so far."
Barnes, who ran the 40-yard dash at the Athens NIKE Camp in 4.45 seconds, witnessed the Gamecocks take on Georgia earlier this year, and will return to Columbia next weekend when Tennessee comes to town.
"I like it down there a lot because the fans really support the team," he said. "I like how coach Steve Spurrier gets his playmakers involved, and that he has a play to call for every situation. They don't care if you're young or old. They put the best players on the field. They feel like I could come in there and make an impact. If Sidney Rice goes pro, I could take his spot. If not, I could learn a lot playing underneath him."
Barnes also likes what the Tar Heels have to offer.
"North Carolina isn't winning a whole lot this year, but that doesn't bother me because they're bringing in a great recruiting class," he said. "They have a great quarterback committed in (Mike) Paulus, and he's going to be taking over early on. If they can get the quarterback situation taken care, everything else should come with it. I also have some friends up there that I'm close with."
Barnes will decide which of the two schools is the best fit for him based on several factors.
"I've already seen the facilities at both places, and North Carolina's are very nice. South Carolina's are pretty nice, but not quite like North Carolina's. I want to see how things are away from football at each place, too. The coaches are also a big part of my decision and the offense I'll be playing in."
Barnes isn't ready to set another timeframe for a decision.
"I'm not going to do that again. I was supposed to decide a few times over the summer, but I just wasn't ready. I'm going to visit South Carolina officially on December 1st, and I'm going to set one with North Carolina, too. Hopefully I'll know where to go after that."
Neither team currently has the edge, but one potential turn of events could make the decision for him.
"I couldn't say which one I like better as of tonight. I can tell you I'll be going to South Carolina if the coaches at North Carolina get fired. We'll just have to wait and see how all that goes."

Williams said if they lose, he'll visit. But if they win, his team has to play again Monday in a region tiebreaker and he won't be able to visit. Williams has made official visits to Notre Dame and Ole Miss and will visit Florida in December. He's also looking at Clemson, Auburn and Virginia. Williams said he currently favors Florida. Nunn Planning Four Visits
By Phil Kornblut
Since decommitting from Virginia Tech last week, Sumter OL Kyle Nunn (6-6 280) has seen his options increase dramatically. He has offers from USC, Georgia, Virginia Tech, NC State and North Carolina. And he says Clemson is showing strong interest and appears close to offering. "It's just a matter of finding a spot for me," Nunn said. Nunn made an unofficial visit to Clemson for the Georgia Tech game. On his way home after the game, Nunn proved to be more than a football player. He and his friends left Death Valley midway into the third quarter. As they were driving down U.S. Highway 76 towards the interstate, Nunn said a car on his side of the road crossed over the median and hit another car head on. Nunn said he and his friends stopped and offered assistance while waiting on rescue personnel to arrive. As for his official visits, Nunn said he will schedule trips with USC, Clemson, Georgia and Virginia Tech. He said Penn State called his coach this week and also is interested. Nunn said he'll make another unofficial visit to USC this weekend for the Tennessee game. He said he does not have a favorite.

Hills, who said he has over 30 offers, has not decided on his other visits. Some of his other offers include Florida State, Michigan State and Nebraska, Florida, Louisville and Ole Miss. Hills also plays free safety but says USC is after him as a receiver. "I'm looking at their depth chart and they are short on receivers," he said. "They only signed one last year." Hills said there is no favorite right now. In eight games this season Hills has 30 catches with 5 touchdowns and he's intercepted three passes.

This out to clear up some of the Dunlap mess a little bit:
Coach Feels Dunlap Favors SEC
By Phil Kornblut
DE Carlos Dunlap (6-6 245) of Fort Dorchester appears to favor USC, Florida, Tennessee and Auburn according to his coach Steve LaPrad. "They are a little bit ahead in the ballgame," LaPrad said. Clemson is also a factor and Dunlap made an unofficial visit there for the Georgia Tech game. "He said it was neat," LaPrad said. "He hasn't been to Tennessee yet. I have a feeling he's going to USC this weekend. He's been to Auburn and Florida. They are on him hard. I feel like it's going to be the SEC, and maybe Clemson." Dunlap has offers from all of those schools along with North Carolina, NC State and Louisville as far as LaPrad knows. He is also getting interest from Virginia Tech. Dunlap was left off the Shrine Bowl which LaPrad felt was an unfortunate decision by the team's coaches. Dunlap's father was outraged and blamed USC's Steve Spurrier and Clemson's Tommy Bowden for not ensuring his son was selected. LaPrad says that blame was misdirected. "Coach Spurrier texted Carlos two or three times that night," after the team was announced LaPrad said. "You can't hold that agains them. They didn't pick the team. It's not their fault. They've been good to him." And the coach says people who believe Dunlap is a character problem don't know him. LaPrad said Dunlap told him he would give up his spot on the North-South team to a teammate if it would help that player get a scholarship since he already has his offers. Dunlap will not schedule his official visits until after his season.

USC Moving In On UNC Commitment
By Phil Kornblut
With the pending coaching change at North Carolina, some Tar Heel commitments are beginning to look around at other options. USC is getting involved with LB Jarrell Miller (6-3 225) of Fork Union Prep, VA. Miller signed with North Carolina last February but enrolled at Fork Union to work on his academics. He was a highly rated recruit last season, as well as this season. He played in the U.S. Army All America Game last January. He narrowed his list to North Carolina, Maryland, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia and Virginia Tech before signing with the Tar Heels.

Aiken has scheduled official visits to Florida November 11th when the Gators take on USC. And he will visit USC December 9th. He will also set official visits with Central Florida, Florida State and NC State. Aiken is one of three players from Chaminade-Madonna High School being recruited by the Gamecocks. "It's a school with a team with a lot of young players," Aiken said. "If I were to go there, I could kind of make a difference." Aiken said he does not have a favorite.
Florida Running Back Favors USC
By Phil Kornblut
RB Eric Baker (6-1 190) of Jacksonville said Wednesday night he currently favors USC over Clemson, Florida and West Virginia. "Their coaching staff likes me very much and we have a good relationship," Baker said. "I think I might fit in real good with them." Baker said he will take official visits to USC, Clemson and West Virginia. He also has offers from Louisville, Indiana, Illinois, Alabama, Ole Miss, Kentucky and Nebraska. Florida has not yet offered. He's also getting interest from Georgia Tech and Miami. Baker rushed for 1703 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior. This season he has 1552 yards and 20 touchdowns in 7 games.

Brimfield decommitted from North Carolina earlier this week after the resignation of head coach John Bunting. "I knew after coach Bunting left there wold be a lot more schools out there for me," Brimfield said. "One of the reasons I was going to North Carolina was the coaches." Brimfield now has offers from USC, North Carolina and SC State and is also getting interest from Clemson, Tennessee and NC State. "I'm kind of weighing my options, " he said. "I'm getting to know some coaches and programs a little better." Brimfield has scheduled an official visit to Tennessee for January 13th. Davis May Need Another Prep Year
By Phil Kornblut
USC placed WR Jeremy Davis (6-3 205) of Vanceboro, NC at Fork Union Prep in Virginia this fall with the understanding he would sign with them if his academics were in order. Davis still plans to be a Gamecock but right now the signing probably won't take place until 2008 according to Fork Union coach John Shuman. "He's still got some stuff to clean up," Shuman said Thursday. "He's a hard working guy. He might be a two year guy here. He's doing the best he can. But you can't change four years or three years in six months." Shuman said USC is aware of Davis's academic issues.
Graham Still A Possible Signee
WR Keith Graham (6-4 195) of West Ashley, who also was placed at Fork Union by USC, remains firm in his plans to sign with the Gamecocks according to Shuman though he said the commitment won't be official until Graham shows more academic progress. "He's loyal to South Carolina," Shuman said. "Some track schools are making a run at him. I think he wants to do both at South Carolina. I think it's pretty solid for the Gamecocks." Graham is the team's leading receiver this season.
Miller In State Of Confusion
Shuman confirmed USC and several others are positioning themselves for a possible run at LB Jarrell Miller (6-3 225) who has been committed to North Carolina. But the coaching change there has opened things up for Miller and the other schools. "He's a little stunned right now," Shuman said. "He's trying to regroup. We're giving him some space. We're going to send him to his high school coach so they can talk things over." Shuman said Alabama, Tennessee and Michigan are some of the others expressing interest in Miller.
And One More
Fork Union DE Chase DeCarlo (6-4 220) of Beaufort has offers from Charlston Southern and Wagner according to Shuman.

Well, we are able to "hit them up" because we are "hooking them up". We placed Davis and Graham there. Now, we can raid the guys who may not go to UNC anymore.

What exactly is Fork Union Prep? I know its a school in VA, duh, but is it a juco, or a high school, or what? I realize we "place" recruits there, so I would guess it is a juco?

Williams Should Be At USC
By Phil Kornblut
DL Ian Williams (6-2 300) of Longwood, FL said earlier in the week he would make an official visit to USC this weekend if his team lost Friday night. His Lyman High team did lose, so the Gamecock coaches can expect to have Williams in for his official visit. WR Matt Clements (6-1 185) of Naples, FL also is scheduled for an official visit this weekend. The Gamecocks also will have a large number of prospects at the game making unofficial visits.

Sumter's Kyle Nunn Commits to USC

It happens every year in the world of recruiting. A player will commit to a school, has a change of heart, and decides on a new destination. Sumter High standout OL Kyle Nunn becomes the latest as he goes from the ACC to the SEC after making his decision Saturday night.
It didn't take Kyle Nunn long to figure out that home is where the heart is. At least that's where he'd rather play his college football at.
The Sumter High School standout offensive lineman originally committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies but recently decided to decommit. At 6'6 280 pounds Nunn is an imposing force on the field and the young man knows how to utilize his size and strength against opponents. Just last week Nunn was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl for the South Carolina squad.
Nunn's Sumter team just came off a 33-14 loss to Conway High on Friday which features Shrine Bowl selection and Michigan commitment WR J.R. Hemingway. The Sumter Gamecocks record now stands at 7-3 on the year.
After deciding to part ways with the Hokies Nunn made a visit tonight to the South Carolina campus to see the Gamecocks take on the #8 ranked Tennessee Volunteers. With a raucous atmosphere and Williams-Brice Stadium rocking Nunn decided

Clements Visit Continues
By Phil Kornblut
WR Matt Clements (6-1 185) of Naples, FL will remain at USC on his official visit until late Sunday afternoon before flying back home. As it turned out, Clements was the only official visit for the Gamecocks this weekend. DL Ian Williams (6-2 300) of Longwood, FL did not make his visit due to a dissapointing loss Friday night that eliminated his team from the playoffs. "It was a real tough loss," Williams said. "I just wasn't in the mood for it. "I'm going to call the coach (Hunt) tonight and try to reschedule." Williams has visited Notre Dame and Ole Miss and is also considering Florida, Auburn, Clemson and Virginia.
