This site is a little more complicated than most and that's because of the software. It looks good though. :)

Playbooks?

Yeah, just curious when Spurrier is allowed to give the offensive players his playbook to study and learn. Does he have to wait till spring, or is he allowed to do that now?

It all depends on how fast the NCAA reacts.

I agree. It does make the conference look bad, but I wonder really how surprised everyone will be? I have heard his name mentioned with cheating in the past. Many Carolina fans are very concerned about us playing Auburn in game 5 next season. I am not saying they won't be good, but they are losing a lot this season. I am of the opinion we have to start looking forward to those games, and not be wary of them.

Yeah, I know who you are referring to. I am ecstatic about the future here. I posted on there a while back about the negative attitude here. I am changing mine. I try to educate myself on what I am talking about. If I don't know, I ask or try to find out. Just like asking you about recruiting. I have studied Steve Spurrier and his past however, and he did not have near the talent at Duke or Florida his first year as he has here. He went 9-2 at Florida first year, and almost that good at Duke I think. He knows the SEC, and after his ridicule at Washington, he is going to come back into football with a vengeance. He wants to win. It's in his blood. He knows nothing else. I am sure he will have that football team feeling the same way this fall. He won't tolerate anything else.

One other thing I am really excited about is it's looking like we should have some depth this season, so when someone screws up he can yank them out, and never miss a beat. That would be nice to not see an OL go down, replaced by a DL like we have had to do at times in the past.

You are correct. Spurrier disdains losing and will not stand for it. When he took over at Florida, they were hit hard with scolly reductions and the whole ball of wax. He still won the SEC that year, but it doesn't count because Florida was under probation.

You are correct. They would have been SEC Champs his first season. I know a lot of things have changed since then, but his desire to win and beat teams like UGA and Tenn. have not. They never really did figure out his offense, either. I think the players will be excited because they know he is going to let them play, and play to their full potential. I have also read interviews with a couple of his previous QB's. They both said he is terribly hard on his quarterbacks, but it made them great. They said to play quarterback for him, you can't make mistakes, and you HAVE to be able to read defenses. I don't see how we can go wrong. I'm tired of hearing about this Chicken Curse!! LOL

Another thing I am excited about is that in the past, when Carolina fell behind, they were in trouble because of their conservative approach on offense. I remember a Carolina Florida game a few years back when Carolina was up like 24 or 21 to 3 in the first quarter. Florida came back and won 48-24 if I remember correctly. Point I am making is with his offense we should never be out of a game, because when his offenses start rolling, they can put up points at will it seems.

Well that's why he recruits specific players. His system requires speed and when it's clicking, it is really demoralizing to an opponent.

Spurrier’s first USC recruiting class not likely to match those of recent years

By JOSEPH PERSON

Staff Writer

Steve Spurrier needed only a month to fill out his first coaching staff at South Carolina.

Now comes the hard part: filling out the roster.

The Gamecocks’ recruiting efforts kicked into high gear this weekend with the first of four official-visit weekends leading to National Signing Day on Feb. 2. USC has received 12 verbal commitments for a class that Spurrier expects to comprise 22-23 players.

Recruiting experts say USC’s recent coaching transition will make it impossible for the Gamecocks to match the top-10 classes Lou Holtz landed in 2002 and 2003. While Spurrier all but conceded most of the top in-state recruits to Clemson during a December media briefing, the USC staff hopes to find several high-profile, skill-position players for Spurrier’s acclaimed Fun ’n’ Gun offense.

“I think we’re getting a great reception from all the skill kids,” said USC recruiting coordinator Rick Stockstill, one of three assistants retained by Spurrier.

“A running back knows in this offense he’s got a chance to catch 25, 30 balls a year, plus be a 1,000-yard rusher. ... Linemen want to be able to throw the ball, work on pass blocking, run blocking. They just don’t want to hammer away running the ball all the time.”

Jamie Newberg, a recruiting analyst for Fox Sports Net and Scout.com, said he thinks USC will be able to sign a couple of talented receivers, traditionally a deep position nationally. But Newberg believes overall it will be an uphill recruiting climb for Spurrier, who had 71 days after he was hired Nov. 23 to find players before Signing Day.

USC was scheduled to host about 19 recruits this weekend, the last before classes start Monday. Ideally, schools prefer to have recruits visit when more students are on campus. But Newberg said the Gamecocks could not be picky.

“They’re about halfway done, and South Carolina’s taking it on the chin a little bit. So they can’t afford to wait,” Newberg said. “They have to get the kids on campus and then try to close the deal.”

Out of the college game for three years, Spurrier has jumped headlong back into recruiting. The former Florida coach, who won six SEC titles and the 1996 national championship during 12 years in Gainesville, has gone after some of the nation’s top prospects.

He contacted Maryland athlete Derrick Williams (who later committed to Penn State) and tried to sway several highly rated quarterbacks late in the process. Though the Gamecocks’ commitment list lacks a five-star recruit, Newberg has been impressed with Spurrier’s approach.

“Everybody’s painted the picture that he hates recruiting and he can’t recruit. That’s just not the case,” said Newberg, one of the hosts of Fox Sports’ “Countdown to Signing Day.” “When he needed to recruit at Florida, he did.”

“I think we’re off to a great start,” Stockstill said. “Coach Spurrier has come in and for four weeks has been in a lot of guys’ homes (and) been on the road all four weeks.”

Spurrier, who was not available for comment, has tried selling offensive players on the opportunity to play early in a wide-open system. Lakewood athlete J.C. Neal, who was not considering USC while Holtz was the coach, visited this weekend and lists the Gamecocks as his third choice, behind N.C. State and Virginia Tech.

Neal, a high school running back expected to play receiver in college, called Holtz a “good guy,” but was not fond of his offensive philosophy.

“If they threw it, they threw it to Troy Williamson or (ran a) quarterback draw or something like that,” Neal said. “That’s why I didn’t consider them at first. It wasn’t much of an open offense. But now they’re planning on throwing it more. So I guess I’ll give them a look.”

Spurrier said last month that he hopes to sign three or four receivers and at least one quarterback. Tommy Beecher, a quarterback from Concord, N.C., committed to the Gamecocks in December, but Stockstill said the Gamecocks are not necessarily done recruiting passers.

“We’re not going to turn down a great player,” Stockstill said. “We’re looking under every rock, every stone every day to find the best players out there — whoever the best players are.”

Newberg doubts USC’s recruiting labors will yield a crop of blue-chip players this year but believes Spurrier will be in better shape a year from now after getting familiar with the state’s high school coaches.

Newberg pointed to Nebraska coach Bill Callahan, who “jumped on every big-name kid in the country” in 2004 after getting hired but signed only one, according to Newberg. This year the Cornhuskers are working on a top-10 recruiting class, Newberg said.

Newberg said Florida’s Urban Meyer, Mississippi’s Ed Orgeron and every new coach are in the same boat as Spurrier.

“I never remember a coach coming into a school with one month or two months of recruiting and killing it,” he said. “You need that year.”

According to a source, WR Jared Cook (6-6 210) of Suwanee, GA committed to USC on his official visit over the weekend. Cook has not been available for comment. Cook picked USC over Ohio State and Mississippi State. This season he had 32 catches for 800 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Sinclair Commits
DB Gerrod Sinclair (6-1 195) of Jacksonville committed to USC Sunday morning following his weekend official visit. "I liked it, it was a good visit," he said. "Getting to know Coach Spurrier and knowing the facilities, it was a good place. It takes a lot of stress off you (to commit." Sinclair said he committed to Steve Spurrier during his...
(Jan. 9)

Bergen Close To Committing
TE William Bergen (6-4 250) of Tampa did not commit to USC on his official visit over the weekend "but I told Coach Spurrier it's 99%. I did not commit but I told them I was pretty sure I was coming. I want to take a few more visits. I told them I'll be back in contact in about a week. I just want one more visit under my belt and I can make a decision. The visit went great. It was a very good experience. They're going places with the new facilities. The weight room is crazy. The equipment is great. Coach Spurrier was with us throughout everything." Bergen was hosted by John Paul Gillis. He has visited Pittsburgh and will visit Iowa State on the 14th and Illinois on the 28th. He said he'd start out as a tight end at USC but depending on how much weight he adds, he could end up at center.

Tucker Still Favors Tech
LB Taalib Tucker (6-1 240) of Atlanta has been committed to Georgia Tech and while he enjoyed his official visit to USC over the weekend, he still calls Tech his favorite. "It was good," he said of his visit. "I liked the atmosphere. I liked the people. They were cool. Steve Spurrier is great. I talked to him yesterday and this morning. I didn't commit but I told them I was thinking about it." Still, Tucker maintains Georgia Tech leads USC and Ohio State right now. He is scheduled to visit Ohio State on the 28th and he might work in a visit to Oklahoma. He said Spurrier will have his in home visit on the 17th. Ko Simpson was his host.

USC On Move With Neal
USC made huge progress with WR J.C. Neal (6-1 183) of Lakewood during his official visit over the weekend. "It was fun, I liked it," Neal said. "They moved up on the charts. I didn't know I'd like it that much. I've got to take my NC State visit (January 14th) and I'll probably decide after that. They (USC) thought I wanted to play DB but I told them I wanted to play receiver and they jumped all over that." Neal was hosted by James Thompson. He said USC, NC State and Virginia Tech are his top three and it's tight between them. He has visited Virginia Tech.

McKinley Firm With USC
WR Kenny McKinley (6-1 175) of Austell, GA made his official visit to USC over the weekend and remains very firm with his commitment. "It's even stronger," McKinley said. "They have good people down there and I like the coaching staff." Sidney Rice served as McKinley's host. He has visits scheduled for North Carolina on the 21st and Wake Forest on the 28th but he's not sure he'll take them.

Could Sinclair Commit Early?

Jacksonville (FL) Mandarin safety/linebacker Gerrod Sinclair is one of the most coveted prospects on the South Carolina recruiting board. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound standout boasts offers from some of the Southeast’s top programs, and has trimmed his list to a top five.

“I narrowed my list down to LSU, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Clemson, and South Florida,” said Sinclair. “I’m visiting South Carolina this weekend, I’ll be at LSU the 14-16, and I’m going to Clemson or South Florida on the 21-23. My last visit is at Georgia Tech on the January 28-30.”

“I’m going to be checking out the environment, the students, talk to the coaches, and look at the depth chart and see what kind of playing time I can get as a freshman,” he said. “I’m going to give all five a chance, they are all even in my mind.”

Sinclair and his family hosted Rick Stockstill last night during an in-home visit.

“My recruiting coach Rick Stockstill from South Carolina just left. He is a good person and easy to talk to. He talked about the visit, my itinerary for the visit and the academics at their school.”

Could Sinclair be willing to make an early decision if he falls in love with one of his final five while on a official visit?

“I’m going to take all of my visits then as soon as they’re over I’ll decide.”

Sinclair had 77 tackles, four sacks, and two interceptions this past season. He plans to major in Computer Engineering and projects as a full qualifier.

Battle Comments On USC Visit
DE Roderick Battle (6-4 240) of Atlanta and a Georgia commitment, took his official visit to USC this weekend and he says it was a good one. "I had a pretty good trip. My interest in USC is definately higher now, " Battle said. " I really learned a lot about the school and the facilities were real nice." Battle says the Gamecocks and Bulldogs are very even. He will visit Georgia this coming weekend and says he plans to make his decision after that. He plans to major in communications and feels both schools are very close in that area. He also noted that the Gamecock coaches feel that he could compete for a starting job next season. "They don't have a lot of depth at defensive end and I know I could go in and work hard and start next season. Georgia doesn't have a lot of depth at my position either, but they have a little bit more than South Carolina. I could probably play a little bit next year at Georgia, but I think a have a better chance of starting early at Carolina."

Stamper Firm With Auburn
LB Ryan Stamper (6-2 217) of Jacksonville says that he remains firm with his Auburn commitment and is unsure if he will visit Clemson on the 21st. "Right now I'd say I'm solid to Auburn. But my decision to take other visits depends on how my visit goes with Auburn. Things could change, but we'll see how it goes." Stamper's several offers include USC, NC State, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, and Vanderbilt.

Jeanpierre Working On Decision
DE Lemuel Jeanpierre (6-5 255) of Orlando is working on a decision after making his official visit to USC over the weekend. According to Timber Creek High coach Jim Buckridge, Jeanpierre has not committed yet. "I talked to him this morning and it looks good for South Carolina, but he could change," Buckridge said. "He was real excited." Jeanpierre is scheduled to visit Georgia Tech this weekend and his coach believed he would make that trip before deciding.

Jeanpierre Commits To USC
DE Lemuel Jeanpierre (6-5 255) of Orlando committed Monday night to USC. Jeanpierre visited USC over the weekend and contacted his recruiter John Hunt Monday night with the news. "The coaching staff is real nice," he said. "The philosophy is good. The players are real nice. I think I can get some playing time early." Jeanpierre has canceled a visit for this weekend to Georgia Tech. He also visited Northwestern. This season he had 80 tackles with 6 sacks.

Brown Will See USC This Weekend
WR Aaron Brown (6-1 196) of Zachery, LA will make his official visit to USC this weekend. Brown says his only other visits will be to Auburn on the 21st. Brown has maintained for weeks that he's made a decision. But he says now instead of waiting until Signing Day to announce, he'll reveal his choice after his visit to USC. His coach will be making the trip to Columbia with him.

Ford Ready For USC Visit
RB Mike Ford (6-2 205) of Sarasota visited Alabama last weekend, his first official visit. "Alabama is a pretty good time," he said. "The thing that standouts is the academic part. I give them a 9.5 in that. Alabama is #1 because I've been there." Ford and his mother will make the visit to USC. He has been strong on USC throughout the recruiting campaign. "It's possible I could commit but I think I'm going to wait," he said. "If they show me a good time, I wouldn't mind, but it's all about the academics." Ford is also scheduled to visit Auburn on the 21st and Michigan State on the 28th.

USC Back In It With Rogers
DB Chris Rogers (6-1 176) of Lakeland, FL has rescheduled his official visit to USC. Rogers will visit this weekend. He visited Alabama last weekend and said after returning home he was not going to take any more visits. "That was my mom," he said. "She was tired of recruiting. She was tired of everybody calling. Today Steve Spurrier calle and it's like he changed something. She was like, take the trip." Rogers said his mother will join him on the trip. He is now favoring Alabama. He has also visited Maryland.

Hill Planning USC Visit
OL Jason Hill (6-5 245) of Atlanta was scheduled to visit USC this past weekend but the Gamecocks called Friday and rescheduled him for this coming weekend. Hill said he is still planning to make that trip. He has been committed to North Carolina and will visit Chapel Hill on the 21st.

Davis, Spurrier Meet
Columbia RB Mike Davis (5-11 208) met Friday with USC head coach Steve Spurrier. But instead of Spurrier coming to Davis's home, Davis and his academic adviser from school rode over to Spurrier's office for the meeting. Davis said he and Spurrier talked about football and academics during the session. Davis returned to the USC campus Saturday night to take in the basketball game at the Colonial Center. Davis has made official visits to North Carolina and Kentucky. He will visit Clemson this weekend along with his mother. He will visit USC on the 21st and Maryland on the 28th. Davis had been favoring Clemson and Kentucky but now says all schools are even and he has no leader.

Davis To Decide Later
LB Brent Davis (6-3 205) of Daytona Beach, FL visited USC over the weekend and right now has the Gamecocks and NC State at the top of his list. He visited State in December. Davis said he will not make a final decision until he visits Florida January 21st. He has no visit planned for this weekend. Davis talked with USC recruiter Rick Stockstill Monday night. He has already had his in home visit with Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier. NC State coach Chuck Amato is to be in his home January 17th.

I have all the respect in the world for all the work it takes to keep up with all the high school talent but I hope I'm not alone when I could care less what Rivals.com ranks our recruiting class.

Right now, I don't know much but I know we have Steve Spurrier as our head football coach. I know he's brought in some extremely credible coordinators to the Gamecocks, each within proven track records at their respecitive specialties.

I know Spurrier knows what it takes to win and it's not always what everyone else seems to think a great team NEEDS have. I put my trust in the fact that we already have talent in Columbia and that he will easily make them better just for being the coach he is. His playbook alone is worth probably 4 more wins and that puts us right there in the SEC title hunt.

I know that this recruiting class won't be Spurrier's best in Carolina and that alone is exciting seeing that we're getting some nice pickups in what is a "down year." And signing day is what? almost a month away yet? Wow....

I know we'll be better overall....on the field, off it, on the stat sheet and in the standings and it'll have nothing to do with how well our 2005 recruiting class was ranked by www.fivestarrecruitsonly.com

South Carolina football is going to ROCK these next seven years....I KNOW THAT and it makes me smile every time I think of it! :D

"I want to have a joint prayer with him," he said. Bonds said he and his pastor will get together Wednesday night after church. Bonds said he's still split 50-50 between the schools. He talked with USC recruiter Rick Stockstill Monday. That's the only call Stockstill can make to Bonds this week, but Bonds said he planned to call Stockstill Wednesday to check in with him. Jamison Visits On Hold
RB Travil Jamison (6-0 205) of Greenville plans to make official visits to Clemson and USC. He just doesn't know when. The problem is Jamison does not have a posted SAT or ACT score on his transcript and cannot take a visit without one. He is waiting on the score of his first SAT attempt to come back and he thinks he'll have it by next week. But, he is scheduled to take the test again January 22nd, and that will likely prevent him from taking an official visit that weekend. He is scheduled for Clemson that weekend but he said he'll have to cancel if he's taking the test that Saturday. He will have the weekend of the 28th to visit one school and might have to take a mid-week trip to the other. Jamison calls Clemson his favorite right now. "They pretty much keep in touch more than South Carolina does," he said. "They act like they are really concerned about what you're doing."

According to a report on Rivals.com, DB Chris Rogers (6-1 176) of Lakeland, FL ended his recruiting Tuesday by commiting to Alabama. Rogers was scheduled to visit USC this weekend but he has canceled that visit.

Bergen Needs To Compare To Decide
TE William Bergen (6-4 250) was very excited about USC coming off his visit last weekend, and he is still strong on the Gamecocks. But before he makes a final decision, Bergen says he has to visit Iowa State this weekend. "I need to take my visit to Iowa State, see the campus and everything and compare them and go from there," he said. "My feeling for South Carolina is still very strong. But I can't compare it to Iowa State because I haven't been on campus yet. That's what it will come down to." Bergen's parents will join him on his trip to Ames. Bregen is also scheduled to visit Illinois January 21st but he says he won't make the trip if he's made a commitment.

Jackson Not Set On Remaining Visits
WR Ruben Jackson (5-10 190) of City College of San Francisco JC made his first official visit last week to Oregon State. He has not scheduled any other visits though he plans to do so later in the week. And one school he plans to schedule is USC. Jackson said he talked with Steve Spurrier Jr. last week and he has interest in the Gamecocks. As for how much, Jackson replied, "The same interest they have in me, sir." Jackson has offers from USC, Oregon State, Texas A&M, San Diego State and California and those are the schools he's considering visiting. He does not have a favorite. This season he caught 76 passes for 1493 yards and 15 touchdowns. Jackson is a native of Stockton, CA who signed with Idaho State out of high school.

WR Jamar Love (6-2 190) of North Little Rock, AR says his official visit to USC January 21st is still on. Love said he talked to Gamecock recruiter Madre Hill Monday morning. "My transcript when through and I'm qualified," Love said. And he says he's still favoring USC. "The plan they have for me that I've been told is what I want to do," he said. "I can play receiver and defensive back. I don't want to be limited to one side of the ball because I know I can do both." Love has an offer from Arkansas strictly as a defensive back. He will visit Arkansas January 28th.

Brown Hears From USC
DL Larry Brown (6-3 295) of Georgia Military JC says he was called last week by USC recruiter Ron Cooper. Brown said Cooper told him he plans to come to the school in a week or two to meet with him. Brown has not been offered by USC and has not set a visit. He has visited Middle Tennessee State and has an offer from MTSU. He is also drawing interest from Troy State. Brown is a native of Spartanburg who played two seasons at Dorman before transferring to Spartanburg High for his senior season. He will graduate in May and have three years to play two.

Is that the same Madre Hill that played for Arkansas not too long ago? Was that Madre Hill or am I mistaken? Why does that name sound SOOooo familiar?

Yes it's the Madre Hill from Arkansas.

You are confusing him with Wayne Madkin from MSU.

Kerry Bonds Update
DE Kerry Bonds (6-3 232) of Tallahassee told us a few minutes ago he could have a decision later tonight. Bonds is deciding between USC and Maryland. He is still waiting to talk to his pastor and is waiting on a call from him. He said once he talks to his pastor he will call his USC recruiter Rick Stockstill. He has not talked to his Maryland recruiter since last week. We'll update this situation regularly.

Bonds Commits To USC
DE Kerry Bonds (6-3 232) of Tallahassee made a commitment tonight to USC. Bonds picked the Gamecocks over Maryland and contacted his Gamecock recruiter Rick Stockstill with the news. He said there were three reasons for going with USC. "Playing time, the coaching staff and the players, I loved them all." Bonds actually played mostly offensive guard as a senior and had 20 decleat blocks on the season.

Yeah..I agree. They do help..because I will click on a four star player and check it out faster than I will a 3 or 2 star.
I like when they have the picture in the profile. I always think I can look at a player and see winner or loser in their eyes.

Brown Planning USC Visit
WR Aaron Brown (6-1 196) of Zachery, LA said Wednesday night he is planning on making his official visit to USC this weekend. Brown said he talked with USC recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr. a week and a half ago. "He told me he looks forward to seeing me there," Brown said. Brown added he's not yet received his plane tickets yet.

Changes On USC Visit List
According to his mother, RB Mike Ford (6-2 205) of Sarasota will not make his official visit to USC this weekend as scheduled. Ford's mother was not sure why the trip has been pushed back to the 28th. Also, according to a source, WR Julius McClellan (6-4 226) of Coahoama JC, MS is no longer being recruited by USC because of academic concerns. He was scheduled to visit this weekend but will not be brought in. And PK Ryan Succup (6-3 210) of Hickory, NC, who has been committed to USC, has moved his official visit back from this weekend to the 21st.

Yep, that's the way I've understood it to be.

They have a national top-100 "overall" ranking list (regardless of position).

However, when looking at a player's profile or a team's commit list, the number next to a player's name is their ranking for their individual position.

USC Backs Off Two Prospects
USC has backed off two prospects it was recruiting due to academic concerns. The Gamecocks had made an offer to Tampa DB Josh Walker (6-2 180), but took that offer off the table due to academic concerns, according to Walker's father. As a result, Walker will not be making his scheduled visit to Columbia this weekend. Walker's father said that the DB was very disappointed that the offer was taken away because he planned on committing to the Gamecocks. USC was one of more than ten schools to have offered Walker. Some of Walker's other offers include Tennessee, Indiana, Maryland, Mississippi, N.C. State and most recently Pittsburgh. Walker's father said that Pittsburgh and Indiana are now the DB's leaders. He will visit the Panthers on January 29. The Hoosiers have told Walker that they would like him to visit, but no visit has been scheduled.

The Gamecocks put an offer to Coahoma JC WR Julius McClellan (6-4 226) on hold due to low grades, according to Coahoma coach Freeman Horton. Horton also said that many of the other schools which have offered McClellan have done the same. The WR had nearly 20 offers from around the country. Horton said that most interested schools are now taking a "wait and see approach" concerning McClellan's grades. McClellan visited Texas A&M on December 3, but since then has had visits with Alabama and Mississippi State cancelled. As far as McClellan's future goes, Horton said, "Everything will depend on whether his grades come up."

Slick Shelly will be a Razorback. Tennessee is hosting this kid this weekend and the Vols would like to have him. That being said, I believe the Nutt will keep him in Arkansas. Even if this guy is a sign and place(prep school) and there is no word out there about that, he is a player that you want to wear your team's uniform.

It's debatable over which rankings are better....

I respect either site (Scout.com or Rivals.com) for their rankings, both overall and by position. But rankings/stars are only one part of it, there's not a true way to tell how well a player is going to make the transition from HS to College. There's plenty of 3-star athletes that have proven to be much better collegiate players than some of the 4/5-star recruits that were recruited right beside them.
