Broadhead Ready To Announce
By Phil Kornblut
OL Ryan Broadhead (6-6 265) of Leesburg, GA plans to announce his decision Wednesday. He has been committed to East Carolina but visited USC last weekend. Broadhead is leaning towards the Gamecocks which means he may not enroll in school until January depending on how the numbers work out on Signing Day.

How much you wanna bet this is a CYA move for us at TE? There aren't many viable options available at TE & this kid has the size I remember seeing at TE at Florida back in the day. Does anyone know anything about this kid and how athletic he is? Could he fit that role or no?
Williams-Brice

No, I don't see him as a tight end. This kid appears to be a greyshirt guy, and I think if there was a chance he could play tight end, then they would do what the could to get him here in the fall. Don't let this Hannah stuff let you believe that we don't have a tight end option. Andy Boyd is back, and he was the starter until he got hurt. Plus, everyone thinks SOS brought in only one 4-star TE last year. He brought in two. Shea McKeen was a TE/DE just as Hannah was. He was moved to DE and redshirted. Hannah was moved to TE and redshirted. Look for McKeen to move back to TE.
We aren't lost without JH. We played all season with our 4th string TE, my friend Carson Askins. Carson is my boy, but he is no Ben Troupe, which is why he is going to law school and not the NFL Draft. A great TE is a plus in this offense, no doubt, but we don't have enough depth (yet) at offensive line to move a kid like this into a TE role.

Feels wierd to doubt you WB but "a kid like this"? He's a smallish 2-star OL who committed to East Carolina over the likes of UAB & Memphis. With the OL we have committed and those we're probably going to get in the end, where does "a kid like this" fit in on the line? Long snapper or center?
I see 6'5" and 257 pounds and that's eerily similar to both TE's we got last year. Maybe I'm reading too much between the lines but I don't understand why else we would go after this guy as consistently as we have, all things considered. Askins may be your boy but he isn't built to be the dual-threat (receiving and blocking) TE Spurs always seemed to have back in the day. Those type guys are usually Broadhead's size....but like I said, maybe I'm just reading between the lines too much. :o :)

Broadhead has the frame to build on.He could be a starter after his red shirt year with proper conditioning.SOS knows how to make an average player alot better he must see something in this guy maybe work ethic.

01-25-2006, 08:13 AM
Broadhead would have been much more highly recruited if he was heavier. Coach Hunt really likes his fundamentals and thinks he has the frame to add 30-40 more lbs. Clemson offered him the same deal (grey-shirt) we did, so I don't feel too bad about it.

I said at the beginning of this process that if a lineman wanted to come to South Carolina, then we would allow him to sign with us. We have a solid class coming in, but don't let a solid class fool you into thinking we instantly have numbers there. We do, however, have some sort of depth at the tight end position. Boyd, McKeen, and Pavlovic. Plus, everyone is saying Jared Cook is a shoe-in to play tight end. I think that is TBD.
You could be right, WayzUp, and if you are and it works out, then let me know about it. If it works out in our favor, then I'll gladly eat a big bowl of crow. There are a few things about this kid that do lead to believe he could be suited as a tight end. Look at his pictures. There doesn't appear to be much fat on him. Also, his verticle leap is nearly 4 inches greater than Hannah's.
That being said, I don't understand why SOS would bring in an OLineman if the intent was to make him a tight end project. Not with a shallow OL depth chart.

I had to get jacked up on coffee this morning, too. Class from 8-2:20 (I have a short break right now) and class from 5:30-10. I will miss both Hutch and Kylan. However, I don't think I'm going to be shocked with either one. Hutch to USC and Kylan to Miami. I hope Kylan pulls the shocker.
I kinda want to see what happens with Broadhead today, but it's not going to make or break my day.
I just want February 2nd to get here. I need to focus.

I found this article on Tim Hawthorne today. Unfortunately, it contains two quotes from Hawthorne that make me cringe. One, he says that he loved the environment in Athens. He then goes on to say that Sidney is great and that he may leave early after next year.
I know I have thought it (that Sidney) could leave early, but I hope it doesn't come to pass. Also, I wonder who put that thought in his head. Could it have been SOS?

This is from an article in Monday's Charlotte Observer. I though it gave a pretty nice break down of the big names on our board and where they will be visiting.
With few scholarships left to give, the official visits were few over the weekend at USC and Clemson. The Gamecocks had four prospects on campus, the Tigers three.
Kenrick Ellis appears to have chosen USC but won't make an official announcement until Signing Day. He also considered Rutgers, Tennessee and N.C. State. Emmanuel Cook, who is close friends with Ellis, has also visited Ole Miss, Rutgers and N.C. State and will visit Minnesota this weekend.
Ryan Broadhead has been committed to East Carolina but is considering a USC offer to enroll in January unless they have the room to bring him in earlier. He plans a decision this week.
Tim Hawthorne said he had a "real, real nice" visit to USC. He has also been to Georgia and Auburn officially and Alabama unofficially, though the Crimson Tide is not much of a factor with him. Hawthorne met Sunday night with Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer and will visit either Tennessee or Louisville this weekend. He said Auburn is his current leader, with USC No. 2. He plans to announce Jan. 30 on an ESPN network.
Craig Stevens was delayed in leaving Clemson on Sunday and won't fly home until this morning. He had previously visited Maryland, Alabama, Auburn and UCLA.
Players still on USC's board making other visits this weekend were committed offensive lineman Heath Batchelor to Arkansas, offensive lineman Daron Rose to Florida, defensive back Chris Duvalt to Illinois, running back Kylan Robinson to Miami, defensive end Byron Isom to Michigan State, defensive end Adam Patterson to N.C. State, defensive end Brian Whitmore to Virginia, defensive end Dekoda Watson to Tennessee, defensive lineman Gavin Smith to Virginia, tight end Dennis Godfrey to Virginia, offensive lineman Hutch Eckerson to Virginia Tech, committed defensive lineman Olufemi Ajiboye to Virginia Tech and committed defensive back Captain Munnerlyn to West Virginia.
Batchelor said he had a good visit to Arkansas but remains committed to USC. Robinson said he had a good visit to Miami and will announce Wednesday between USC, Miami and Ohio State. Patterson had a very good visit to N.C. State but did not commit. He will visit Auburn this coming weekend. He has also been to USC, Michigan and Tennessee and said Sunday all the schools are even with him. Whitmore changed his visit to Virginia from USC late last week. He is looking at visiting USC or Virginia Tech this coming weekend. Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier is to have an in-home visit with him Thursday. He is also considering Maryland and North Carolina.
Watson had a good visit to Tennessee but did not commit. He has also visited USC and Florida State and will visit Virginia Tech this weekend. Eckerson said he is down to USC and Virginia Tech and is working on his decision. Spurrier will meet with him Tuesday. Smith, who had been favoring the Gamecocks after making his official visit to Columbia, committed to Virginia on his visit and said Sunday it is a firm, final decision. Ajiboye said Sunday he had a good trip to Virginia Tech but was sticking with his commitment to USC. Munnerlyn said Sunday he had a good visit to West Virginia but remains firmly committed to USC. He will visit Kansas State this weekend

Please, please, please don't put any stock into what Hawthorne says until he announces on 1/30. I almost lost my mind doing so.
Also, I never been to an SEC campus without enjoying the atmosphere. I've been to USC, UGA, UF, UT, Vandy, UK, Bama, and Auburn. Visits to SEC schools are enjoyable regardless of where they are. Even Vandy. Don't put stock into the fact that he enjoyed Athens. I enjoy Athens and hate it all the same.

This article talks about "The U" losing QB Devlin and picking up another RB committ. They also got a dual-threat QB out of AK. Anyone else hope that Robinson doesn't want to get bogged down on Miami's depth chart and have to compete with a running QB for carries?

Yeah, this forum is perfect for Gamecock fans because everyone puts all their findings in one place so it makes it where we all can see them. It is a mutual sharing. That is why even though this forum was started last year it is still going strong.
I still pose the question of what is the record for longest forum, because we have to be getting close.

However, the footage of Cook is just down right nasty. That kid looks as though he could run through a brick wall if he tried hard enough. It seems like the only way he would go down is if he either got tripped or someone jumped on his back.

I actually think Sidney is the only good skill player who would actually stay with us. I think he'll leave before his RS Senior year, but I do think we get 2 more seasons with him, he's so smart and very nice and I don't think he'll be led along like KO and JJ and he doesn't have an evil, lazy stepfather like Troy Williamson, Rice is the man all around....

I agree with everything you said, except the part about the depth at TE. I'm not sure we can count of any of those guys. I know that McKeen is supposed to be talented, but he's never played TE in college, so it will be an adjustment for him. I hope he can do it, but you just never know. As far as Boyd goes, his return to full strength is far from certain. Believe me, I hope he comes back with the same mobility and strength, but I would be more surprised if he did than if he didn't. As far as Pav goes, I hope he can remember the snap count, b/c he is a motion penalty waiting to happen.
All that said, I believe Coach Spurrier can make it work. He's got a way of making the best out of whatever he's got to use, so I'm not going to lose too much sleep over this.
Also, here's hoping that one of these dudes proves me wrong and becomes a superstar.

Shrine Bowl OL Hutch Eckerson (6-6 270) of Lumberton, NC announced a commitment to USC shortly after 1:30 PM Wednesday. "I'm going to continue my career at the University of South Carolina," Eckerson told the gathering at his school's library. "The connection I made with the young guys on the team was important. They have the stuff to take them to the top. There's an opportunity there nobody else could offer. USC has never been on top. It's a chance for me to be a part of that. Nobody else offered me that. Coach Spurrier is a great guy and a great coach and he got me believing I can be an asset to the team and help take South Carolina to the top. It was definitely a hard decision. I couldn't make a bad decision." Eckerson also visited Virginia, NC State and Virginia Tech with the decision coming down to the Gamecocks and Hokies. Eckerson played left tackle for Lumberton High. He has good speed and gets on his blocks well. He gets upfield well and makes blocks. He's also a good pass blocker. He averaged 10 knockdown blocks per game.

OL Ryan Broadhead (6-6 265) of Leesburg, GA has officially switched his commitment over from East Carolina to USC. "He committed to South Carolina last night," his coach David Johnson said Wednesday. Broadhead visited USC last weekend. His commitment comes with the understanding that he may not be brought in until January due to the scholarship numbers. Can someone tell me if we are recruiting Cook as a LB or RB or DB? I know he is listed as a LB on scout and a safety on rivals. He's only 5'9" and 200lbs so I doubt he'd be a LB (unless he was redshirted and asked to put on at least 15 lbs to play the weak side). DB and RB seem the most logical, but If anyone can shed some light on this I would appreciate it.

Broadhead Commits To USC
By Phil Kornblut
OL Ryan Broadhead (6-6 265) of Leesburg, GA has officially switched his commitment over from East Carolina to USC. "He committed to South Carolina last night," his coach David Johnson said Wednesday. Broadhead visited USC last weekend. His commitment comes with the understanding that he may not be brought in until January due to the scholarship numbers. Broadhead had over 60 pancake blocks this season and graded out at 91%.

I doubt we'll jump any higher unless we got Rose, but that seems unlikely at the moment. Either way, no one in the nation has more 4-star OL lineman in the nation (though ND has four 4-star AND one 5-star).
How many OL did we get and were they all 4 star?

we have 8 committed so far....four 4-star, two 3-star, and two 2-star. one of the 2-stars committed even though he was told beforehand he will likely be grayshirted. he was an ECU commit, but Clemson and others tried to make the same deal with him that we did for the grayshirt.

Robinson Picks Miami

RB Kylan Robinson (6-1 215) of Tampa did commit to Miami today according to Chamberlain High assistant coach Brian Turner. He picked Miami over USC and Ohio State. "It was a hard choice for him," Turner said. "He really liked all the schools but it's been his boyhood dream to go to Miami. He really liked coach Reaves and coach Gillespie at South Carolina." I havent kept up with recruiting as much this season as I have in some past ones. However, I pretty much figured from the start that Robinson would pick Miami. Im not that worried about where stand as far as our backfield. I would've liked to pick up a great running back, but it wasnt a top priority this year. We have Cory Boyd coming back. I said for the past two years that he was the most complete offensive player we have on the roster. He can run fast, run hard, has nice moves, can block well, and can catch out of the back field well. We have also seen a nice progression of Mike Davis over the first year. With those two in the back field for a few more years I feel much better about our backfield. A much more interesting battle for starting spot will occur at the QB position this Spring.....

I agree. We now have Boyd back, with Wallace and Davis with a years experience. We have Taylor Rank this year as well. I really liked watching Rank in practice. Does not mind being hit, nor does he mind laying a lick of his own. What this means is fresh legs for 60 minutes. I would not be surprised to see Wallace moved around some in various formations due to his speed.

To be totally honest I am not sure. It could be 5 or 6 different people. I wish it were Hawthorne, but I don't foresee him coming here. There are some who apparently know who it is, but they are keeping very tight lipped about it. I would love to see us finish out this class with with a couple of 4 star DL and a four star WR. There was no need to bring in any DBs unless they were blue chippers in this class. If you include Carlos Thomas, we brought in 8 DBs last year. We also redshirted the majority of them. Mark my word, Carlos Thomas will end up being a better player than we ever could have dreamed JJ to be. It's very possible that Ajiboye could decommit and go with VT. Afterall, this kid almost committed to Illinois after his visit in December. Then, he immediately committed to us on his visit here. I never thought he made up his mind really. However, I believe it is a possitive thing that Olufemi did not commit on his trip to Blacksburg, and he only rated the visit a 7. Also, don't think our coaches are going to take this lying down. Nix will talk to him everyday, and convince him to keep his committment. He'll be a Gamecock, but I sense drama.

On Gamecock Central there is a big buzz going around that one of the guys we are recruiting,(No Name Given) REALLY REALLY wants to be a gamecock and was very close to commiting to us a couple of times but is being pressured Very heavily to hold his commitment. alot of the posters have made some good posts about who it could be and why he feels pressured.
I honestly Believe it is Ricky Sapp, with the whole suprise visit that was "Supposed" to happen this past weekend and the rumors that he feels he has made a mistake with his clemson commitment, this could be true. it seems to me that someone is helping him become elligable and in return for them helping him he has to commit to clemson, even though he really wants to be a gamecock, feeding him wrong information about his eligabality. i hope this is not happening to him but if it is i hope someone gets to the bottom of it and everything works out for Ricky.
also there is a buzz that Michigan is a MAJOR player in the race for Patterson. more than anyone could imagine right now. however i think we are still the leader for his services but michigan is coming on strong.

Hannah - Big shot player, thinks he's the one in charge, doesn't like the decision of the man who's really in charge, get's challenged, takes the cheap way out. Not that I like the scenario, but it completely makes sense to me.

....Eckerson, a Lumberton, N.C., native rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals.com, chose the Gamecocks over Virginia Tech because of the camaraderie he felt on his Jan. 13 recruiting visit to USC.
He fielded congratulatory phone calls Wednesday from two other USC commitments — quarterback Chris Smelley of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and offensive lineman Kevin Young of Tampa. The three plan to live together next year in Columbia.....

Sounds like he is still VERY likely to ink with Carolina on signing day. That is from several sources. It was close, but no cigar for Beamer. :D

Two other quick notes. We ARE STILL IN THE HUNT for Hawthorne. Spurrier Jr. is visiting him again today along with Ron Cooper. Things are looking GREAT for Ellis coming to Carolina still. Most sources are saying he is ours. That is one, possibly two more 4 star recruits. Hawthorne IMO would be the biggest recruit by far in this class if there is any way we can land him.

Beamer must've done some serious talking last night.... I must admit that Im kinda pissed about Beamer being a hypocrite. Im not mad that he kept recruiting Ajiboye, just that he did after whining like a baby about Spurrier doing something similar last year. Its ultimately Ajiboyes decision so whatever decision he makes Im not gonna say what is best for him. However, I must say that as more and more time goes by I like Beamer and his VT program less and less.

RB Emmanuel Cook (5-11 200) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL has narrowed his list to USC and NC State according to his coach Kevin Flurey. “It’s neck and neck,” Flurey said. “He’s got a lot of decision making to do. He’s looking hard at both schools. He’s got a former teammate at NC State and his girlfriend is going to go to school near there. But he likes the Spurriers. And he and Kenrick Ellis have talked about going to the same school. They want to play together.” Cook plans to announce his decision on Signing Day between 9:15 and 9:45 in the morning.

There are some disappointments that have developed in the last few hours, but I still say that this has been a successful recruiting season for one main reason...
We've recruited for our needs, and our needs are linemen. One of our glaring weaknesses year in and year out is the lack of a real presence on either side of the line. Sure we've had a few good linemen here and there, but never a unit on either side of the ball who can really get it done.
I'm just flat out excited to see us getting the beef.

Garret Anderson will be a great lineman for us. Him, Kevin Young, Chris Smelley, and Rodney Paulk are my picks to be the impact players for this class thus far. All of them have the attitude, the work ethic, and the athletic ability to make great things happen for the boys in the garnet and black.
I think if Spurrier and company are turning recruits away they have an idea on who is coming. They did the same thing last year and the results turned out pretty well I'd say (Murdock and Hannah (though he has since decided to move on).

I don't really buy into the recruit ranking mess; it's nothing but conversation fuel (that I happen to be enjoying, but I digress...) that turns an already competitive process into a cut throat competition.
Just list the classes by school and let that be it. One kid doesn't make or break a class and for that matter, he (and others) may go on to be the next big star or could be a real bust and stink up the field.

The best example of that might be SoCal's recruiting class a few years ago. They had Reggie Bush, LenDale White, and WR Steve Smith in the same recruiting class, yet some WR that I've never heard of was the "star" of that class at the time according to a recent cnnsi article.

A greyshirt actually does sign. Due to each school being allowed to sign as many players as they want yet only able to bring in a grand total of 25, a number of kids may be asked to enroll in January.
So, the truth is that greyshirts sign this year but count towards next year's class. We just don't know who will have to do it.

You are right about one kid not making or breaking a class, yes. However, do you think it's a coinsidence that, for the most part, the teams that traditionally bring in the Top 10 recruiting classes are the teams that traditionally are competing for Conference and National Championships?

Win and they will come. But it doesn't matter to me where we end up ranked as far as recruiting. I trust Spurrier's eye for talent over an arm chair QB anyday.

I agree the staff has an idea. Do you have any predictions?
I think for them to turn away talent like Josh Johnson it must be someone at least as good if not better. Everyone has said that Isom, Ellis, and Cook are essentially gamecocks. That brings us up to 25 total. That leaves 2-3 missing. If I had to guess, I say Hawthorne and Rose. That might just be a wild guess, but I just feel those two want to be gamecocks. Rose dropped a team, and it wasn't SC that helps. He really like his visit and knows that there is a spot waiting for him next year if he joins. Hawthorne had an amazing visit and knows that Spurrier will get him the ball. Plus playing beside someone like Rice has to be appealing. I have been wrong before and will be wrong again. I just hope not on this.

Spurrier Meets With Godfrey
By Kevin McCrarey
USC coach Steve Spurrier flew up to Sanford, NC this morning to visit TE Dennis Godfrey (6-4 260). According to his coach, Godfrey is no longer considering Virginia and is down to Clemson, USC, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. He has been committed to the Demon Deacons. Godfrey will visit Virginia Tech this weekend and announce his final choice on Signing Day.
Any insider info on this guy anyone? Not too hard to understand why Spurrier flew up to see him....

I am just gonna say this...Hannah pretty much screwed us over....The timing is pretty bad..Now we have to get in late with a tight end and hope he feels the magic.....i have zilcho respect for that kid.....on another note i see captain munnerlyn is starting to milk it a bit..This is a quote.."I believe i will still be a gamecock because usc can take me to the next level"...he immediately replies, "but who knows," referring to his upcoming visit this weekend with k state...He may be a "captain" now, but whoever is is head coach will be the "general"..I could not, in any way, be a recruiter..i could not play the kiss butt game..I dont know how steve does it..Steve is definitely realizing that he is at carolina when he has to coddle to a two star kid who was not even rated a month ago...Steve has been back slapped with reality..He would not even be talking to that kid if he was at Florida.. I would tell his butt to pound sand...I have noticed that this is the time these kids have some limelight and i believe thier true character comes out....I could care less if he signs with us now..

I understand your logic and the way you are thinking. However, the reason Rivals rated him as a 2-star is due to the fact that his high school coach did not submit any film to Rivals. No one at Rivals has ever seen this kid. We don't know how good he is. The coaches at Carolina, WVU, and KState found this kid all on their own, and they obviously like what they see.
I don't like his uncertainty, but I can't see him going to KState. They are in major rebound mode. Let's just all remember that these kids haven't signed with anyone. It's disappointing to see that he is going to visit elsewhere, yes, but what would you think if a kid was committed somewhere else and decided to visit here anyway. It has already happened a couple times this year.

I think we came in way too late. The general thought on this kid is that if he does not sign with WF, then he will be a tater.
