If the season started today he would. I still think Mitchell or one of the freshmen will beat him out.

I think Mitchell will need to show alot more moxy than he has in the past.If we start one of these freshman, It will be a long year for gamecock fans. Niether one of these guys is a blue chiper. The speed of the game and the routes of the recievers are very hard for a freshman to be successful for an entire season. I think ss wants to win now. :)

Mitchell has really impressed me lately with his attitude and work ethic. He hasn't missed a single work out and has put together several QB/WR passing mini-camps. I think he is finally starting to grow up.

Yeah I agree. I think Spurrier mentioned in one of his interviews that Mitchell has not been a single workout and is trying his best to win the starting job.

I am seriously starting to think that we have a chance with clausen. if you think about it you really havent heard one thing about spurrier being all over a qb recruit for the class of 2006. does anyone else here agree with me, or am I just talking out of my @$$

Just saw this on The State.
Jimmy Clausen (6-3, 190) of Westlake Village, Calif., will make a second unofficial visit to USC next month along with his father and his brother, former Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen. His other brother, Rick, is a quarterback at Tennessee.
“We are very honored that coach Spurrier is recruiting Jimmy, and I believe coach Spurrier will have USC real good real fast,” Clausen’s father, Jim, said last week.
Clausen has about 50 offers including USC, LSU, Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Colorado, Michigan, Miami, Washington, UCLA, Texas and Florida State. His coach, Bill Redell, said last week the race could come down to the Gamecocks and Notre Dame. Clausen is on track to graduate from high school in December 2006 and would enroll in college the following month.

I think we have our best chance with Clausen as we have ever had with that caliber of an athlete. He is being touted as the BEST athlete in the class of 2007, that includes WRs, DB, LB, OL, DL, and other positions. It is very exciting!

Moe Brown WR
Anderson (SC)
Westside High School
Height: 6-foot-0
Weight: 170 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.4 seconds
He was being recruited by Clemson, UNC, and Maryland. Maryland and UNC had offered him and Clemson was close to offering. He was also drawing interest from UT according to his coach. You can never have too many guys with 4.4 speed. He's a little raw and may take some time to develop.

Route running can be taught but straightline speed can't. I'm sure Spurrier can fit him into some vertical routes before the rest of them are polished up.

That was Troy Williamson's problem his 1st two years. He always wanted to just blow past the guy because he was so fast. Once Stockstill took over the responsibility of coaching WR's Williamson quickly became one of the best recievers in the country. Now Stockstill is coachings TE's, but with the types of teams Spurrier Jr. has coached on Im sure he will be able to show the WR's a thing or two himself.

If that isn't the size and speed of one of Spurrier's old WR's, I don't know what is. Show me some moe.

The Moe Brown commitment blew me away. I usually know the commitment but the last two have really stumped me. So much for my knowledge. I wish I could see some film. The only film I saw of Gaston was of him as a DE and we have him listed as a fullback. I know nothing about Moe besides what Beeds posted.
Neo, hopefully your divorce works out without both sides having too much animosity between them. Also good luck in your new pad!

I knew nothing of him either. Apparently he camped at USC and blew Steve Spurrier Jr. away. Coach Wommack would also like to see him play a little corner as well.

I'm personally hearing Ware's name pretty often. I've heard that Belcher is actually turning some heads in the CB slot. Watching Belcher, he's got the quickness and the feet to play CB, he just needs to work on his pivots and such.

I've heard the same thing. I've heard this guy has come in on thin ice because he was such a flake during the recruiting process. He kept telling everyone he was "kinda commited to us". Then when nothing else materialized for him, he signed on the dotted line. He's the only possible head case in this class, IMO.

Highly Regarded OL At USC
By Phil Kornblut
OL Daron Rose (6-5 310) of Tampa is making an unofficial visit to USC today. The Gamecocks are one of nine schools Rose is considering from the more than 50 offers he has received. He is also taking a close look at Notre Dame, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Oklahoma, South Florida and Southern Cal.
Anderson Visits USC, Again
By Phil Kornblut
OL Garrett Anderson (6-4 270) made another unofficial visit to USC Thursday where he met with head coach Steve Spurrier and assistants Rick Stockstill and John Hunt. "I talked with them a little bit," Anderson said. "I didn't have a whole lot of questions. I just had a few other things I wanted to get on the table." Anderson said things are even among USC, Clemson and Virginia Tech. He was at Tech Tuesday and Clemson Wednesday. He says it will be another two weeks to a month before he comes up with a decision. Anderson is aware of the controversy surrounding Spurrier's decision not to renew some scholarships of returning players and the criticism Spurrier has received from some high school football coaches in the state. "I know what came out in the newspaper, and I know what the real story is," Anderson said. "I know where he (Spurrier) is coming from. I give him some respect for that. It doesn't make me now want to go there and I think he did the right thing. If you have players not doing what they are supposed to be doing, you have to make room for the players who are." Anderson said he has talked with his coach, Bill Kimrey, about the situation. "Coach Kimrey found out the true story," he said. "If you are going to play for Carolina, you have to do what the coaches want you to do. He (Kimrey) would fully support me going to Carolina."
I would say 60%-65% but thats just cuz its so early...

I like Clausen already. He is looking at the schools that he actually has a chance to play at for a couple of years. UT, USC are full of #1 qb recruits from over the years, go to a place where you have a chance to shine for 4 years.......not a year and a half. You would think more recruits would look at depth charts and realize hey i wont even get a shot until my junior season

Hope fully thats true. I think a lot of players might not want to come to USC because of what Spurrier is doing. It some what scares me what he is going but I understand that he is just putting in players that are willing to work and that want to play. I happy with anything he does that will make USC better.

You don't REALLY believe that do you Neo? Claussen will end up in Obnox when all is said and done, Phat is hard at work already making sure his brother got big time exposure at Media Days and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he did begin the year as the starter.
Remember, UT took his brother after LSU tossed him aside....it would be the coup of the recruiting season if he went anywhere else.

Anderson said things are even among USC, Clemson and Virginia Tech.
I know this is a double post, I just wanted to highlight that portion of the kids comments

[QUOTE=Neo]Highly Regarded OL At USC
It doesn't make me now want to go there and I think he did the right thing.
Hope fully thats true. I think a lot of players might not want to come to USC because of what Spurrier is doing. It some what scares me what he is going but I understand that he is just putting in players that are willing to work and that want to play.
Exactly! What he is doing is sending a signal to slackers that, "We don't want ya'." Only the recruits that are confident in themselves and their abilities and work ethics will want to come here. It also tells others that our coach is serious about succeeding and won't take any crap from the prima donnas who think all they have to do is just show up.
It sounds like a perfect cog in the machine of building a solid power at USC.

Just so everyone knows, I heard today from a person who actually talked with Spurrier and he told me that if everyone knew the situation surronding the scholarship withdrawls we would totally support them. He promised Stevie that he wouldn't tell anyone but he said to trust him.
Kurtz,
You haven't been here long enough to know where I get my recruiting info from. When it comes to recruiting, you can almost bet dollars to donuts that it will happen.
USC Among Favorites For Florida WR
By Phil Kornblut
WR Lattarius Thomas (6-2 210) of New Smyrna Beach, FL made an unofficial visit to Louisville over the weekend. He has also been to Florida, Miami and Central Florida this summer. He has offers from Louisville, Nebraska, West Virginia, Florida and Tennessee. He says he's getting strong interest from USC but no offer at this point. He's also getting interest from Clemson, Miami, Ole Miss, Georgia, Florida State and Michigan State. Thomas calls is top five USC, Florida, Louisville, Tennessee and Miami. Last season he caught 32 passes for 500 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Four Offers For Middleton
By Phil Kornblut
DL Zack Middleton (6-2 265) of Orangeburg-Wilkinson says he now has offers from SC State, North Carolina A&T, Furman and Navy. And he's getting some interest from USC, Clemson, Vanderbilt, Furman, Marshall, North Carolina, NC State and Florida State. Middleton camped at Florida State this summer. He does not have a favorite.

Ever wonder why teams like USC (SoCal) and UT are full of #1 QB recruits? They are the top tier programs. The top kids want to play for the top programs. These kids realize that they will get the best coaching and have the best chances to play beyond college.
I amnot dogging USC (SoCar) or anything like that because they have the coaching and just need soem time to get there. I was just presenting another point of view to the situation you are talking about.

Anderson Commits To USC
By Phil Kornblut
Dutch Fork OL Garrett Anderson (6-4 270) committed to USC this afternoon. Anderson met with Steve Spurrier in his office and game the new Gamecock coach his pledge. He picked the Gamecocks over Clemson and Virginia Tech. "Location was a factor," he said. "The biggest thing is that something big is about to happen at South Carolina. Coach Spurrier is going to do some incredible things. I can help something happen. I'm just excited about the opportunity to do something big at Carolina. I had my mind made up Friday night but I slept on it a few nights. They are all great schools. I hate to choose one, but I can't go to all three at the same time. I think I made the best decision."

Virginia Tech isn't going to give up on this kid. Beamer is still fuming about losing Jon Hannah on signing day last year. I'm glad he committed, but this is one kid I'm watching until his LOI is in the hands of coach Stockstill.
This list was compiled from myself and from the USC page at Scout.com
(Rivals 100) indicates that the player has been placed on Rivals' preseason Top 100 list. Listings with (Hot100) indicate that player made one of Scout's regional Hot 100 lists.

Does anyone know how these guys are looking from a recuiters standpoint, not to step on toes or start a debate about stars but I haven't seen anyting on any of the recruiting websites about where these guys rank talent wise with "stars"....I know that in the long run they don't really mean anything but it kinda gives you a measuring tool as to where our new recuits stand compared to others nationally.

Young Gives Reaves A Call
By Phil Kornblut
One of the top OL prospects on USC's board is Kevin Young (6-5 320) of Clearwater, FL and he remains strongly interested in the Gamecocks. He has his list of over 30 offers down to USC, Miami and Florida State. Young made a call to his Gamecock recruiter Davis Reaves Monday just to check in. "We just shot the bull and didn't talk a lot about recruiting," Young said. "I plan to wait it out for a while and I don't have a favorite." Young has not set his official visits but three of them will be USC, Miami and Florida. He also plans to take in at least one game at USC this season.

Top Junior Wants To Be A Gamecock
By Phil Kornblut
WR Markeveis Barnes (6-3 190) of Richland Northeast is considered by some the state's top prospect for 2006. Barnes is also a standout free safety and could play either position in college. As a sophomore he had 24 catches for 400 yards and on defense had 2 interceptions. "He's a great open field tackler," said his coach Jay Frye. Barnes has 11 offers at this point...USC, Clemson, Wake Forest, Kentucky, Auburn, Maryland, Virginia Tech, NC State, North Carolina, Penn State and Georgia Tech. He has attended the first two USC practices this week, Tuesday night with several teammates and Wedneday night with teammate Gary Gray. When asked Wednesday night where he'd like to go to school, Barnes replied, "Right here," and pointed at the USC practice fields. A source close to Barnes told PalmettoSports.com that Barnes would commit to the Gamecocks right now if his high school coaches would let him. His coaches want him to hold off only because they want him to focus on getting ready for the season. However, a source said if Barnes still wanted to commit in a couple of weeks, his coaches likely would allow it.

I saw Barnes at practice, he was tall and skinny. But he looked like he had some swagger to him. So far I would say we are winning the state recruiting battle. I just hope this year's class can have as many talented players as last years. Because the boys of 2005 are the real deal!

Are you kidding me? How the heck are you saying that we are "winning" the state recruting battle for 2006????? Out of the South Carolina Top 15 5 players have chosen Clemson over us. 2 have chosen Georgia and 1 Oklahoma. I think we are definitely losing the state battle.

I was looking at the rivals site the other night and I noticed that a lot of the top prospects (according to rivals) were looking at other schools.....didn't even have G'Cocks on their list. Is it that rivals just doesn't show us any respect, or the recruits just aren't interested in coming in to give us a look? I was expecting a little more than what we are getting. Clempson hasn't had great seasons and they have been strong in recruiting the past couple of years and are off to a good start this year. When are we going to be on the same level as UT, Fla, LSU, etc....?

I think what you see on rival is correct. Not a lot of guys are interested in us. I think this might be because of what Spurrier did earlier this year but taking scholarships away from players. I think that will/might hurt our recruting majorly. I dont know why but people just seem to be interested in clempson. I mean why would you want to go to a farm school??? And I don't think that we are ever giong to be on the same level as Fla, Miami, Southern Cali etc... Our class will probably not even be in the top 25 if the recruiting is going the way it is going right now. Spurrier is going to have to make a lot of visits and make a lot of players believe in South Carolina football. It will be hard.

there are two reasons i frequently hear for why recruits like clemson...
1. "i know so and so..." clemson has built some pretty good relationships with schools around the southeast, so you'll see one kid commit to clemson and then two years later a former teammate goes to clemson to join them.
2. "it's nice and quiet so i'll stay out of trouble." one would think it would concern clemson that player's say this....cause trouble can find you anywhere. however, after this offseason we can't really talk about our team's character being overall better than theirs.
i think at clemson the football players are more of 'gods' on campus than the football players are at USC and maybe some other schools, which i'm sure some kids like.
one other thing is the fact that they are a farmboy-redneck-fratboy school. as absurd as it seems to us, a whole lot of people throughout the south really like clemson because of that image.
obviously none of this truly explains why clemson recruits so well, but it is my theory on some possible explanations. as well as they recruit early, almost every year for the last 6 years we have either caught or passed them in the recruiting standings. i see no reason to expect anything less this year. i would imagine our rankings will be about the same as last year....both schools with recruiting classes ranked right around 20th. we shall see though.

I think our overall athletes from the state will preform better in the end. Rayser was supposed to be soo good and Summers was supposed to be soo good but neither panned out. Ko Simpson wasn't supposed to be anything above average but, well no explanation needed. I think Anderson, Brown, and Paulk will be far better then any players Clemson has gotten thus far. They are more commited and rely less on their athletic prowess then the Clemson SC recruits seem to do.

You really won't know about recruiting until AFTER the season is over. I think THEN you'll see major players come out of the woodwork. This happens every year. Clemson got an early start on us last year, but we caught up in amazing fashion. If we have to go out of SC for our players for a while, then so be it. Winning can change that, in time, in major fashion.
This, as all else, shall be dictated in TIME.

Ricky Sapp and Byron Maxwell are 2 very good players. How do you figure USC's commits are more committed than Clemson's?

Patterson Down To Five
By Phil Kornblut
Richland Northeast DL Adam Patterson (6-3 260) has cut his list down to a final five. Patterson said Thursday night the schools to make is final group are USC, NC State, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and Auburn. "In a way, it's like stress relieving," Patterson said. "In a way, it feels like a lot of pressure is lifted off me. I'm going to take a look at those five and see what happens this year." Patterson will schedule his official visits with the final five teams. He does not have a leader among the five.
It's nice to see he left Clemson off his list. He's a rivals100 guy if I'm not mistaken. I'd sure like to land him...

Nope, he's going to Bama or Michigan. We've backed off him a little because we are full at QB and we're going to be making a strong push for little Clausen next year.

But I hear Clauson is looking seriously at Miss State due to Casey's recent hiring there as a GA. The brother's relationship is extremely strong and could play a pivitol part of the recruiting process. I still put his top three as SC, Miss State, and UT.

I say more commited because after watching Maxwell and Sapp they seem to rely on athletic ability more so then fundamentals. While the SC commits rely on fundamentals more so. I could be totally wrong but those are my inital impressions. I think overall Sapp and Maxwell are heads above the rest but I think fundamentals and coachability will eventually make the better player.

Strs of 3.61 thats pretty darn good when the high or college season hasnt even started. I dont know why and how they are getting all these good recruits. They should be coming to us!

It's still early and a lot of things could change over the course of the season. I think all it will take is for Spurrier to get 6 wins during the regular season and go to a bowl. A lot of recruits will be hearing about Spurrier all year and then to see him come right in and get them back to a bowl game will be enough evidence for a lot of recruits to decide he's moving this team in the right direction. Plus if chumpson doesnt do well this season the fans will once again be talking about firing Bowden as they always do. Also with how many times Bowden changes coaches the inconsistency in the program will not look too good to recruits. They will probably still get a decent class, but you cant go by the rankings at this point.

USC Still On Tebow's Chart
By Phil Kornblut
QB Tim Tebow (6-3 225) of St. Augustine, FL plans to focus on his senor season at Nease High School and worry about recruiting later. He has over 70 offers and hasn't officially cut down his list according to his coach Craig Howard. However, Howard says USC, NC State, Southern Cal, Michigan, Florida and Alabama are some schools Tebow has indicated to him he has high interest in. "There's a lot of reasons they should be," Howard said. "He's waiting and seeing. He will watch them and will probably take in games there. He plans to go to about four or five games. But his focus is not on scholarship but on championship. The relationship with the head coach and with the quarterback coach will be important factors." Tebow, who passed for 4800 yards and 46 touchdowns and rushed for 1500 yards and 26 touchdowns last season, was a standout at the Elite 11 camp this summer earning awards for work ethic, leadership, and the one most likely to succeed in any offense.

USC In Great Shape With Clausen
By Phil Kornblut
Highly rated junior QB Jimmy Clausen (6-3 190) of Westlake Village, CA is putting his recruiting on hold right now as he prepares for the upcoming season. But after making several unofficial visits last week, including one to USC, it is clear the Gamecocks are weighing heavy on his mind. "We're very interested in South Carolina," said Clausen's father Jim. "Obviously, Jimmy and coach Spurrier are developing a chemistry and are getting more and more comfortable. We kind of sought him out. We felt this might be a place that would be a good fit for Jimmy and it might be turning out that way. It's early in the process. Jimmy said to me the other day, 'I need to go to work. I want to be the best quarterback in the nation. It's nice and I'm honored (by the all attention) but I need to get with my team.' That's where we're at right now. We'll try to get it down to four or five schools and thank everybody else for their time. As this thing goes down, I would be very surprised if South Carolina is not one of the schools we're talking about. He's very comfortable with what coach Spurrier asks his quarterbacks to do. I think coach Spurrier sees in Jimmy a man who has a lot of upside if he works hard and if all this nonsense doesn't go to his head. From this point on, he wants to be the best high school quarterback in the country. He needs to refocus and really go to work. Jimmy wants to go somewhere and build something special. That's where he and coach Spurrier are on the same page. They see something special at South Carolina. It's a great place, it's a great opportunity. But it's early in the process." Mr. Clausen said there's no leader for his son right now. Clausen also made unofficial visits last week to Tennessee, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame. He plans to take in games at several schools this season, including USC, but has not scheduled those dates.

I know plenty of the Tennessee guys often respond to our drooling over Clausen by stating there's zero chance that he would come to USC over Tennessee since the family has a good relationship with Tennessee. Well I think after you read that column anyone would have to admit that we at least have a chance at him. The fact is that they may be far more experienced with the Vols, but they have a good relationship with the USC coaching staff as well. Mr. Clausen really likes Rick Stockstill and they clearly have tons of respect for SOS.
Jimmy may very well end up at Tennessee, but we have a chance. At this point that should be enough for Gamecock fans, because if we keep getting these elite QBs looking at us, eventually one is going to decide to try and be Spurrier's next big thing and the savior of Gamecock football....whether it's this year's recruiting class, next year's, or 4 years from now, eventually Spurrier will be able to reel in a big one.

I don't know what UT fans you are talking about. There is a very good chance that Clausen could wind up playing for someone other than the Vols.
I haven't heard him say anything that would imply that we were in the lead.

Here's the Link showing that: http://southcarolina.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=1183&Year=2006
I'm new to the board. Scfan5338...do you think recruiting is being effected by Spurrier recently not renewing those scholarships of 6 players. Spurrier is almost like doing one year try outs. If you're not good enough...you're out. What ever happened to those 6 players any how. I have not been following things much.
Thanks

I think when Spurrier pulled those scholarships that really affected our recruting a lot. Especially the high school coaches in South Carolina. They are going to tell their players not to go to USC and I think that is a big part in why we are not having a good recruting year so far. I mean I thought we were suppose to get a big name QB this year or atleast in the top 10 or something but all of them have commited, so if we dont get Clausen we are pretty much screwed. I really hope he dosent turn his back against us.

I totally disagree. Come REAL recruiting season, after the bowl games, this will all blow over and be all but forgotten, except by the ornery media. Besides, the high school coaches aren't as unified against this as one may be led to believe.

Exactly. I wouldnt worry too much about all of this right now. Some people on here seem to always come on here and talk about how bad we're doing in recuiting and how good chumpson is doing. Things right now dont mean much. Most of the big recruits arent committing right now anyway. Like I said before with the inconsistency at chumpson and fans always talking about firing Bowden he may not even be there next year if he doesnt go to a bowl this year. Plus even if he is still there and doesnt make it to a bowl some of these recruits may second guess themselves. Its early in the game and a lot of things could change.

good to see we have some optimists in the Gamecock family, hehe.
Spurrier got a pretty awesome class put together last year in a little over a month. I think we'll be just fine this year, hehe. We need a stud QB to win a championship, but we don't need one to be a good team....in fact it sounds like Cade might be one heck of a find in last year's recruiting class....and Clausen doesn't even sign with anyone for 20 months so I wouldn't hold your breath waiting on that one. Even if he comes here you might be a little blue by then, hehe.
We really have to stop comparing ourselves to Clemson when it comes to instate talent, because I personally feel that at least half of the top recruits that choose either school are just picking their childhood favorite. Ricky Sapp is their huge commit up to this point, and he's clearly been a diehard Clemson fan. There was little chance USC could have gotten him. Next year's top WR already wants to commit to USC because he's a diehard Gamecock fan, and I'm sure it doesn't hurt that Spurrier is here. One of the top DL prospects in the state has us in his top 5, and his good buddy LB Rodney Paulk has already committed to us.
And let's face it...recruiting rankings don't necessarily equal team rankings. Notre Dame had some respected recruiting classes before it fell apart the last few years, but they've done little to nothing on the field. Iowa had avg. ranked recruiting seasons for a few years but those kids worked hard and won 9+ games for 3 years I think....so let's stop worrying too much about the recruiting rankings either.
We're going to be fine. Let's just have fun watching this team develop under Spurrier and watch some quality college football. This is supposed to be fun remember?!?

Another insightful post with some excellent points made. I'd give ya' rep., but just gave ya' some for another fine post; I really enjoy taking in your thoughts. [Enough back patting]
And you are right that we shouldn't lament because some great talent chose his childhood favorite; conversely, there are as many talents out there who adored the cocks as kids, and with SOS here, perhaps they won't "come to their senses" and be swept away by TN, FL, or GA but will stay in S.C. to help build an empire.
Now wouldn't that be grand! :)

Richland NE (Cola.) star Adam Patterson(6'2" 260 lbs.-ranked as the 4th best DT in the country) has narrowed his list down to two schools: SC and NC State. He has over 30 offers. "I've been to SC so many times now and I just get a good vibe when Im there. Coach Steve Spurrier is a great coach and I've also developed a good relationship with Coach Stockstill. They've been recruiting me to play defensive end and thats what I want to play."
Something tells me if he has already narrowed it down to two schools, has Stockstill as his recruiter, and goes to HS less than 20 minutes away from SC's campus then theres a very good chance he could end up at SC.

and he's good friends with LB Rodney Paulk, who has already committed to USC!!
if you look at this status on rivals, he's a four-star player at the moment, but he gets a 6.0 rating, which means he's probably a solid senior season away from being a five-star player. that would make for one hell of an addition to the first complete recruiting season for spurrier (even if he's just a lowly four-star recruit. ;) )
This list was compiled from myself and from the USC page at Scout.com
(Rivals 100) indicates that the player has been placed on Rivals' preseason Top 100 list. Listings with (Hot100) indicate that player made one of Scout's regional Hot 100 lists.

The Defensive Three
Bearcats still powerful on other side of the ball despite losing eight starters
By Barry Byers The Herald
(Published August 25‚ 2005)
Rock Hill's offense is getting a lot of publicity this season, but that was expected after first-year coach Joe Montgomery shed the ball-control running game and put in a wide-open spread attack.
Ben Poore, the Bearcats' quarterback, and Tori Childers, his top wide receiver, have become household names around town.
Hold on just a minute. As much as the run has been Rock Hill's trademark, so has its defense. Despite losing all but three starters, this year's defensive unit appears to be just as good as ever.
The scary part is that it might be faster than last year's, which held Stratford to 90 yards in a 21-7 victory that gave the Bearcats their second Big 16 state championship in three years.
The Bearcats begin their quest for a third state championship tonight at 7:30 on the road against West Florence.
Montgomery, Rock Hill's defensive coordinator the past two seasons, said that although the Bearcats had to rebuild the defense, he couldn't have asked for three better senior players to do it with.
Back are linebackers Donkay Degraffenreid and David Erby and defensive back Phillip Adams. All three have deep Bearcat roots.
Degraffenreid's dad, Eric Durham, and Erby's dad, David Erby Sr., are former Rock Hill running backs and wrestlers.
Adams' brother, Ryan, is a former standout Bearcats linebacker and was a state heavyweight wrestling champion. He wrestled for the University of North Carolina.
"Those three guys can flat-out play,'' Montgomery said of his three returning starters. "They aren't that big, but they fit into what we want to do. We have defensive players in the 180- to 190-pound range that can run and know how to play physical. What you'll see this year is the same Bearcats' defense people have become accustomed to.
"Donkay is the leader. He's a four-year starter who knows where to be on all the defensive fronts and stunts. But the other two have become strong leaders. To be a good football team, you have to have that from your seniors.''
Degraffenreid (6-foot-0, 185 pounds) has started since his freshman season and helped lead the Bearcats to the 2002 Big 16 state championship. He has started 42 straight games and is being heavily recruited by Tennessee (which has offered him a scholarship), South Carolina, N.C. State and Auburn.
Most preseason publications have Degraffenreid listed among the top 25 senior players in South Carolina.
"Our defense will be fine, just as good as always,'' Degraffenreid said. "We've been whipping the new guys into shape and everything is coming together. What impresses me is they are fast and like to hit.
"The new guys trust me, David and Phillip, and they look to us for leadership. When you play football, trust is very important, and we have come along so quickly that we know we can trust the eight new players over here with us. We have confidence they will show up every week and carry out their assignments. If they keep improving, I think I can leave with three state championship rings.''
Darrell Erby, a 6--0, 185-pound linebacker, is the fastest player on the team. He was promoted to the varsity his freshman season for the playoffs. Erby is drawing interest from North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina, Auburn and Tennessee.
Erby and Degraffenreid like to pick at each other about which is faster, but Erby says he owns that distinction. Degraffenreid used to beat Erby in the 100 meters when they were in middle school. Since then, Erby said he's outrun his friend every time they raced.
It's a friendly competition and Rock Hill is fortunate to have such hard-hitting and quick players at linebacker. Erby said playing beside Degraffenreid has made him better and has brought him attention.
"When college coaches come to see Donkay play, they see me and it has helped me get noticed,'' Erby said. "We both love to hit hard and attack the ball carrier. We are just alike except I'm a little faster. I really believe we are the fastest two linebackers in the state.
"Donkey is a great teammate. He helped me last year when I became a starter. There were times when I made a mistake and he took the blame. The coaches knew who messed up, but that's the kind of person Donkay is.''
Adams, a 6-1, 173-pound defensive back, is the least known of the three, but that should change before the season ends. He is getting interest from North Carolina, James Madison and The Citadel for football. Army, VMI and Charleston Southern have contacted him about playing basketball.
He relishes his role as a team leader and said the leadership this year might be the strongest the team has had.
"We have to set examples for the younger guys because they look up to us,'' Adams said. "Leading means things like getting to the practice field on time and never cheating in the weight room when we are lifting. It means going hard all the time in practice and in games. And if someone makes a mistake, we have to be there to pick him up.
"We have to do things like that to groom the younger guys who will be asked to lead when we are gone. We want the Bearcat tradition to continue.''

Don't believe anything and everything that website publishes. Granted, I heard the same thing about Gaston, but that doesn't mean that his decision is going to change.
GamecockCentral.com likes to "Shoot from the hip" quite a bit and it usually bites them in the azz.

During the season, I don't have that much *insider* stuff to give people. During recruiting season though, that's a new ball of wax. As many of the "Veteran" members of SECTalk.com will tell you, I offer the best USC recruiting info available and I don't charge a single penny.
I've personally been threatened by a Mr. David Simpkins at GamecockCentral.com. He has threatened me on numerous occasions pertaining to my *insider* information and how I'm causing members to cancel their subscriptions to his site. My response/advice to him was to quit charging fees.
I do not and will not charge money for my information. I think it's tacky, greedy and just plain rude to charge a fan money for information. We're all fans here and we should share whatever info we can find with each other. Since coming here and sharing my *insider* info, quite a few people told me that they cancelled their subscriptions to other sites because of this site. There's a buzz on the street about SECTalk.com and it's bringing in new members everyday. This coming season will be my second (2nd) recruiting season with SECTalk.com and trust me, it's going to be a wild ride. If you doubt my sincereity, just ask one of the veterans here.
Like I said earlier, I'm not trying to brag or sound arrogant. Just try to remember that the object of those sites is to sell subscriptions. Nothing more or less. They will report anything and everything to try and get memberships. On here, I will always have the "Doubters" or "Non-believers" and that's fine. I have no problem with earning the trust of new members that cannot or have not seen what I have to offer and how it stands up to the competition.
Thanks for your support and I'm looking forward to another rollercoaster ride during recruiting.

While I agree that it sucks when football season ends, recruiting really helps in waiting for football season. After recruiting you got a month until spring practice. After spring practice you have a break and then Fall camp starts up.

Clemson Now Involved With Barber
By Phil Kornblut
Clemson has become more involved with DB C.J. Barber (6-2 195) of Pearl River JC, MS and he is considering attending the Tigers next home game against Miami. Barber said he's talked with Clemson recruiter David Blackwell a couple of times and he thinks the Tigers are going to offer him. Barber has an offer from USC and he still considers the Gamecocks his favorites. He's also hearing from Tennessee and Auburn but he says he'll choose either USC or Clemson. Barber has been at his home in Rock Hill since last week due to damage at his school caused by Hurricane Katrina. He will return to school September 19th. His team has not yet played a game this season.

USC Favorite Of Florida Back
By Phil Kornblut
RB Anthony White (6-2 190) calls USC his favorite right now by a wide margin over the other schools on his list. "I don't know why," he said. "Steve Spurrier, that's it. I like Steve Spurrier. I was a Florida fan and I always liked Steve Spurrier." White has verbal offers from USC, Ohio State and Iowa State and a written offer from Iowa. He's also hearing from Miami, Florida, Florida State and Ole Miss. White played fullback as a junior and scored nine touchdowns on a limited number of carries. He's playing tailback this season.

The fact that he would rather go here than Ohio State because he's a huge Spurrier fan is another good sign for recruiting. This kid and others like him haven't even seen our facilities or seen us win a big game this year yet. We just need one huge offensive committment....a kid that's getting national attention....then the ball will really be rolling. We may have to wait til next year for that to happen but I'm a patient person, hehe.
If this guy is good, I sure as hell hope we get him. Our running game REALLLLLLLLY needs some major help.
It's not the TB's fault. Our running game really isn't that bad. It's the offensive linemen. They will be ten times better next year though. This is a brand new system for them and there are going to be growing pains.
I don't know if you're saying our TB's suck and if you are......up the dosage.
Both Wallace and Davis are the real deal. You have to consider that they are TRUE freshmen competiting in the most competitive conference in the nation. Davis showed a glimpse of greatness against UGA.

Georgia OL Favors USC
By Phil Kornblut
OL Conrad Thomas (6-5 335) of Douglasville, GA is a strong lean to USC right now according to his coach Phil Williams. Thomas is close to making a commitment according to his coach but has not yet done so. Thomas has offers from USC, Louisville and Memphis. He's also getting interest from Georgia, Auburn and Alabama. "He's a guy who looks like he should be in the NFL," Williams said. "He runs well and has a good body lean. He has learned to be a good pass blocker." Thomas plays offensive tackle.

That's a big dude. I hope he comes here. I wouldn't be surprised if we signed 8-10 OL this year. OL and DL are our most pressing needs for next year.
This list was compiled from myself and from the USC page at Scout.com
(Rivals 100) indicates that the player has been placed on Rivals' preseason Top 100 list. Listings with (Hot100) indicate that player made one of Scout's regional Hot 100 lists.
